I came across a cool pic posted by Darkglass Electronics showing Troy Sanders (bass player of Mastodon) pedal board. I really wanted to showcase more bass players on EffectsBay, and this is a great looking pedal board from a great band… Mastodon! Those of you that aren’t familiar with Mastodon, it’s a band worth checking out.
Below is the break down of pedals. Please let me know if anything is incorrect or missing by commenting below!

A while back.. , maybe two years ago? I was in a little Judas Priest tribute project. A friend of mine grew up with Judas Priest’s British Steel album, and he wanted to put a project together where the band played that entire album front to back. As for me, I wasn’t the greatest JP fan, but definitely had a phase in high school. I definitely appreciate the concept of ‘project’ vs. ‘tribute band’. The difference is that it’s a limited run. Minimal shows (less than 5) and that’s it.. you move on. You don’t end up as a perpetual tribute band. I definitely could relate since I did a Joy Division one years ago where we played only one show.. and that was it. These projects are an absolute blast and really enjoy it when an opportunity presents itself.
Today I came across a rig rundown of Richie Faulkner of Judas Priest. Richie, in 2011 took over for KK Downing after he announced his retirement. If anyone knows the reason for the retirement.. let me know. Quite curious.
The following video is by EMGBackstage where Richie’s guitar tech breaks down the goods. I set the starting point to be at the pedals, but there are some sweet guitars at the beginning that are worth a watch:
Here is the breakdown of pedals:
Boss CH-1 Super Chorus
MXR Carbon Copy Analog Delay
Boss OD-3 Overdrive
Electro-Harmonix Micro POG
Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor
Voodoo Lab Ground Control
Crybaby GCB-95 Wah
Dunlop Rotovibe

Premiere Guitar has another great Rig Rundown that they posted yesterday. This is for Steely Dan’s Jon Herington. I liked this video a lot. Instead of talking with a tech, the interview was with Jon Herington. I particularly liked this video. I thought it provided some great insight on why he used certain guitars, amps and effects. I thought it was very informational. Jon is a great player and to hear him talk about gear, is a treat.
Here is a screen snap of Jon Herington’s Pedalboard:
Here is the breakdown of the pedal board:
Boss TU-2 Tuner
Xotic RC Booster (x2)
Vox Joe Satriani Big Bad Wah
Earnie Ball Volume Pedal
Boss RV-5 Reverb
Tech 21 Boost DLA
Tech 21 RotoChoir
Voodoo Lab Tremolo
Ibanez Modulation Delay DML
Boss DD-3 Digital Delay
Mesa Boogie Channel Switcher
Bludotone Switch/Boost
I liked how he uses the Boss TU-2 as the buffer for the pedals. I personally do this as well, and for those of you don’t know, the buffer will raise the input signal to the pedals. Especially if you use long instrument cables, this can help with cable capacitance. For more information on cable capacitance, check out this post: Visual Sound (buffered bypass) and Route 808. I also liked how he ran the delays and reverb through the amp’s effects loop. I’ve played around with this in the past, but for some reason always end up with those pedals in front, maybe I’ll re-address it again.

Last week I got an email from Ryan Rukavina of Rukavina Guitars letting me know about a cool video by tcelectronic. This video features Eric Baech, guitar tech of Troy Van Leeuwen (Queens of the Stone Age), and he goes over Troy’s set up. This includes his main pedal board, rack/amps and guitars.
I broke down, into detail, what was seen (since Eric doesn’t go into detail of each pedal). I have everything worked out pretty well except for two unknown pedals. They’re listed below, so if you can help shed some light, please comment below and I’ll get the list updated.
Here is the video by tcelectronic:

Today I came across a artist I wasn’t familiar with – the pride of Philadelphia, G. Love. G. Love and the Special Sauce is a three member alternative, blues, hip hop band. Okay, so that caught my eye and wanted to learn more. If you’re curious too, you need to go here: Philadelphonic.com for the full scoop. What really got me on this journey was Premier Guitar’s rig rundown piece with G. Love. I LOVE the rig rundowns. Great stuff. If you aren’t subscribed to Premier Guitar’s YouTube Channel.. you should be.
In that segment, G. Love goes into great detail about his board, and what I really like, into WHY he likes certain pedals, etc. It’s one thing to have a quality effect on the board, but it’s quite useful to hear the rational as to why it’s there. That same logic might apply to you, etc. and might help you find that missing piece in your line.
Here is the break down of pedals on G. Love’s board:
Voodoo Lab Amp Selector
Electro-Harmonix Wiggler
Boss BF-3 Flanger
Boss TU-2 Tuner
Xotic RC Booster
Electro-Harmonix Q-Tron Plus
Boss DD-6 Digital Delay
HAO SP-1 Sole Pressure
Keeley Compressor (2 knob)
Dunlop Cry Baby Wah GCB-95
I thought it was interesting that he mentioned that the Electro-Harmonix Q-Tron Plus would be his “deserted island pedal”. I really like it when this question is asked. By answering you really get a glimpse as to what is the biggest component (effect wise) to their tone or sound.
If you’re interested in any other artist boards that haven’t been featured on EffectsBay.com, please let me know!

The Smashing Pumpkins are on tour again, and TC Electronic posted some photos of a recent show. In those shots, there is a great shot of Billy Corgan‘s pedal rack. There are some interesting pedals in there, but I was mostly surprised.. no Big Muff? It’s great to have a recent photo of his gear!
Here is the shot of his pedal rack:
Digitech Whammy
Voodoo Lab Micro Vibe
Blue Collar Menatone
Analogman Standard Chorus
MXR EVH117 Flanger
Keeley Electronics Nova Wah
Xotic Effects RC Booster
Analogman Peppermint Fuzz
I’m not sure if there are additional pedals at his feet close by to the controller or not. If anyone has additional information/photos please let me know.

Before heading on my vacation to New Orleans (which was absolutely fantastic by the way), I saw that Bob Balch (of Fu Manchu fame) posting a pedal board of the stars post on his awesome site – PlayThisRiff.com. The video, actually a two parter, was for Tim Sult of Clutch. I thought it would be cool to post this updated pedal board on EffectsBay.com. I sent Bob a email and he was glad to share!
Over the years, Tim has changed his board, but the core options/functions remain the same, various brands and models appear. Right now I’m thinking of shots of Dunlop Wahs to Teese Wahs, etc. The photo below is the latest image of 2011 of his board.
Here is the breakdown of pedals
TC Electronics Polytune Tuner
Electro-Harmonix Micro POG
Line 6 DL 4 Delay
Option 5 Destination Rotation Single
Dunlop JC95 Jerry Cantrall Wah
Maxon AD-999 Analog Delay
Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2+
The interview of Tim Sult by Bob Balch was a good watch for sure. To view the video, you do need to be a member of PlayThisRiff.com, and if you’re interested in learning about riffage of some of the heavier bands out there, then you need to be a member of PTR.. no question.

Last night I caught the tail end of Foo Fighter’s performance on Austin City Limits. I’ve seen this before, and I always seem to catch the last 2-3 songs. One day I’ll watch it from the beginning. Of course I would keep a third eye on the floor of the stage to see if I can see anything interesting going on with the effects/set up. I did notice Chris Shiflett and his two Line 6 DL4s so for today, I thought I’d do some research and break down his pedal board. Without further ado I present Chris Shiflett’s pedal board.
I didn’t have to look hard at all to find something recent. At HC, niceguyollie posted some fresh photos of his board (posted 3/24/2011).
Below are the shots of the board:

Here is a break down of pedals:
Dunlop DVP1 Volume Pedal
Boss TU-3 Tuner
Voodoo Labs Amp Selector
Vox Input Selector/Jumper Switch? (custom)
Menatone Red Snapper
Fulltone Fulldrive 2 MOSFET
Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail Nano
Electro-Harmonix Micro POG (Polyphonic Octave Generator)
Line 6 DL4 Delay Modeler x2
Line 6 MM4 Modulation Modeler
The only one I wasn’t sure about was the black pedal labeled ‘Vox’. I’m assuming it’s a jumper pedal to blend inputs on the AC30.. not 100% sure.

So a couple of days ago, I posted John Cummings pedal board, so I figured it would be good follow up with Stuart Braithwaite of Mogwai. I absolutely love the textures that Mogwai creates with their guitars. It can go from thick and engaging to light and beautiful. I’m a fan of tension and release… and these guys are the masters.
I’ll repost the same video I mentioned in the previous post. It was much harder to see the pedal board of Stuart’s in this clip, so if anyone can fill in the gaps, it would be greatly appreciated!
Here is a partial screen capture of one of his pedal boards. Looks like he has two set up.

Board #1
Boss TU-2 Tuner
Danelectro Fab Tone DD-1
Home made analog synth/distortion
ProCo Rat
Boss DD-20 Giga Delay
MXR Carbon Copy Delay
Boss ??
Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2+
Electro-Harmonix Memory Man w/Hazarai
Board #2
Boss RC-20XL Loop Station ?
Boss ??
Boss Pitchshifter?
Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2+
??
It was interesting that Stuart was talking about the durability of the Danelectro Fab Tone DD-1. Curious why he doesn’t have one re-housed in a sold enclosure… with a good footswitch??
