Great deal on the T-Rex Twister Chorus/Flanger at Amazon!

Great deal on the T-Rex Twister Chorus/Flanger at Amazon!A few months back we did a demo of the T-Rex Twister II chorus /flanger and it’s a great sounding pedal. The Twister II was created to replace the original Twister – version 1 (correct me if that’s not the case). Everyone knows what to expect when it comes to T-Rex – quality in build and tone. I was excited today to see a great deal on the T-Rex Twister Chorus/Flanger at Amazon. This pedal lists for $399.00, and is usually available for $299, but is currently on sale for a crazy price of $120.16! That’s $278.84 off of list price! At the time of this post there were only 2 left in stock. This price might jump up when it gets down to 1, so it’ll be a race to pick up this deal, but wanted to post it regardless. This pedal also ships with FREE super saver shipping!.

Here is the official description of the T-Rex Twister Chorus/Flanger:

The Twister chorus and flanger effects pedal from T-Rex Engineering is for guitarists who seek a shimmering, rich, vibrant, swirling chorus/flanger tone.

A chorus effect brings your sound to life, adding a dynamic vibrancy to the sonic texture of any song you use it on. But a chorus and a flanger?

Although they sound quite different, these 2 classic effects are so closely related that a single pedal can produce them both. T-Rex deviates from the usual path with The Twister and builds 2 separate units inside a single stompbox. While the chorus adds sparkle and shine to your sound, the flanger puts a funky twist on both chords and single-note lines. Give The Twister a try and discover how this T-Rex pedal is the wild and weird effect you’ve been seeking.

The Twister pedal is packed with features that make sure you get chorus or flange your way. The Twister has a mono output for running through an amp on stage and stereo outputs for the studio or live stereo setups. In chorus mode, the light/heavy switch lets you quickly switch between 2 classic variants of the chorused sound, while the brilliant Tone control lets you take some of the top off for a more subtle effect.

Again, the T-Rex Twister Chorus/Flanger is on sale for only $120.16 at Amazon!

T-Rex Lowers Price of its FuelTank Chameleon Power Supply

T-Rex Lowers Price of its FuelTank Chameleon Power SupplyJust received an email from Musiquip (US distributor of T-Rex) letting me know that T-Rex just made an announcement regarding their Chameleon FuelTank Power Supply, and wanted to pass on the info. The basic jist is that they’re lowering the prices on these units, which is great for us guys/gals that are looking to power pedals!

Here is the Official Press Release:

T-Rex Lowers Price of its FuelTank Chameleon Power Supply

November 2011 – Musiquip, the US distributor of Danish guitar effects pedal manufacturer T-Rex Engineering, announces a reduction in the price of the FuelTank Chameleon power supply. The new suggested retail price of the FuelTank Chameleon is $209 (was $249).

Originally launched in early 2010, the FuelTank Chameleon is the most versatile power supply T-Rex has ever made. With six outputs and four different voltage options, it can power just about any guitar pedal ever produced!

* 6 separate outlets (up to 5 can be used simultaneously)
* Your choice of 9V DC, 12V DC, 18V DC or 12V AC power
* Isolated, 300mA outlets (1,500mA total)
* Switchable 115V / 230V mains
* Thorough selection of connector cables
* Compact, rugged, road-ready design
* Legendary T-Rex quality

I found this great video by TRexEffects that goes into detail about this power supply. I also liked how it explains output voltage and milliamps (mA). This is useful to know when dealing with the amount of power all the pedals require and to see if you’re starving yourself or not:

For more information on the FuelTank Chameleon, check out T-Rex’s product page.

Top 5 Delay Pedals on the Market

Top 5 Delay Pedals on the MarketOriginally, when I was going to write this post, I was going to do it a little differently. I was going to pull some various resources to figure out the top 5 delay pedals on the market today. The problem is.. this is quite subjective. Top 5 could mean the best, but best is often not realistic (Does expensive mean best? Is exclusivity best? Is workhorse best? Is popularity best?). I wanted to compile maybe the most ‘popular’ or possibly the best bang for the buck set of delays.

So, I thought I would do something different and post my opinion, but ask for you to supply your own opinion of your top 5 delays below in the comments. Please add some explanations of your choices to help others.

For this, I compiled this short list of common delays available today. I know there are delays missing, but wanted to include delays that I often see on Pedal Line Fridays, and see in recurring discussions on forums, etc. If you feel one is not in here… and should be included, comment or contact me, and I’ll update this post. This list is in no particular order.

Empress SuperDelay
Diamond Memory Lane 2
Pigtronix PHI Echolution
T-Rex Replica Delay
Eventide Timefactor
Strymon El Capistan Tape Echo
Strymon TimeLine
Fulltone Tape Echo
Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Memory Boy
Electro-Harmonix Memory Man
Akai Head Rush E2
Boss DD-20 GigaDelay
Boss RE-20 Space Echo
Line 6 DL4 Delay Modeler
MXR Carbon Copy
Way Huge Aqua Puss Analog Delay
Boss DD-7 Delay
Boss DD-3 Delay
Maxon AD999 Delay

Okay, for my opinion of the Top 5 Delay Pedals on the Market.

1. T-Rex Replica Delay
2. Eventide Timefactor
3. Boss DD-7 Delay
4. MXR Carbon Copy
5. Electro-Harmonix Memory Man

T-Rex Replica Delay – I own this personally, and I think this is an awesome delay. Love the tone, love the tap tempo, very warm sounding

Eventide Timefactor – I’ve seen mention of this over and over. It’s on the higher end of the price spectrum, but there is no denying that this is a popular delay. It may be more complicated than what I like, but I would love to take it for a spin.

Boss DD-7 – I’m including this because it’s a work horse. I almost want to include all the DD series pedals. For the price, it’s a great sounding digital delay. I own a Boss DD-3 and it’s great for the rhythmic delay overlay. I always feel like I want to exclude it, but every time I play it, I’m impressed.

MXR Carbon Copy – I still wonder why I don’t own this. I’ve thought about buying it a ton. This is a perfect example of following Pedal Line Fridays. The amount of times I see this pedal on the line is ridiculous. Probably one of the most popular delays featured on Pedal Line Friday submissions.

Electro-Harmonix Memory Man – I would probably slap the Deluxe Memory Boy, Hazarai, etc. EHX makes some amazing gear, and this is a classic delay. Upper Mid-Range in price, but unbelievably solid. Love the tone. Jimmy Rolle (who does the demos) has an older Deluxe Memory Man, and the pedal is bad ass.

I have a feeling I’m going to change my mind in about an hour….

So let’s hear what your Top 5 is… and more importantly why. Remember, we’re not just picking the 5 most expensive pedals. I think showcasing ‘working man’ delays with the high end stuff is a good metric on the popularity and the effectiveness of the particular delays. Getting feedback from you guys is a great way to see what is hot or required for delay guys.

T-Rex Yellow Drive Demo

T-Rex Yellow Drive DemoA little while back, Musiquip who is the USA distributor of T-Rex effects, sent over a T-Rex Yellow Drive for us to demo. The T-Rex Yellow Drive  is a Guitar Center exclusive pedal (partnership between Guitar Center and T-Rex) and is a two channel overdrive allowing you to have two separate levels and tone settings.  This is very handy where you have a nice crunch rhythm setting but want to also have a higher gain setting for leads. Basically, it gives you two pedals in one.

Here is the official description of the T-Rex Yellow Drive via T-Rex Effects:

Most guitarists know how complicated it can be to switch between clean, crunchy and distorted sounds on stage. If you set your amp to a crunchy sound and use a distortion pedal for solos, you don’t have a clean option. If you run you amp clean and use a distortion pedal for solos, the only way to back down from full distortion is to lower the volume on your guitar – and lose most of your tone.

Meet the T-Rex Yellow Drive
The T-Rex Yellow Drive solves this problem by giving you two separate channels of vintage T-Rex gain. Two channels means you can easily switch between a clean sound from your amp, a nice edgy overdrive from Channel A on your Yellow Drive and a thick warm distortion from Yellow Drive’s Channel B. It’s like having two pedals in one – and it gives you total control over your sound.

New tone controls
With the T-Rex Yellow Drive, total control runs deep. Of course you can set the amount of gain for each channel (the gain level for Channel B picks up where Channel A leaves off), but you also get pair of individually tuned tone controls – one for each channel – so you shape the timbre of your overdrive and your distortion to create your own signature sound.

We believe the T-Rex Yellow Drive is the best-sounding, most versatile boutique distortion pedal you’ll find anywhere. But don’t take our word for it. Try one today at your local Guitar Center!

For this demo, I enlisted the help of my good friend, Jimmy Rolle. He’s playing a Gibson Custom Shop Les Paul Elegant into a Germino Lead 55 through a Marshall 4×12 cabinet. The cabinet is mic’d with a Shure SM57 and a Fathead Ribbon Mic. There is nothing between the guitar and the pedal besides instrument cables.

You can listen to the high quality MP3 clip via SoundCloud

This is a nice sounding overdrive with a classic warm vintage  tone, but can get nasty by adjusting the gain. Having separate gain, level and tone controls makes it easy while extremely versatile for dialing in the right tone for your guitar.

If you’re interested in T-Rex, please check out their website, as well as visit Musiquip (the official T-Rex dealer of the United States). If you’re interested in picking up a T-Rex Yellow Drive, it is available for $159.99 at Guitar Center.

Pedal Line Friday – 10/28 – Jason Trahan

Today’s pedal line is from Jason Trahan. If you have a pedal line (doesn’t have to be in a board) for your rig, please email me a photo, bio, description of pedals and routing to pedallineateffectsbaydotcom. Every Friday I’ll showcase a pedal line submission. Make sure you include any links to your band or music page.

Pedal Line Friday - 10/28 - Jason TrahanPath:

guitar/lap steel > Boss TU-2 tuner > Hartman Vintage Germanium Fuzz > Way Huge Green Rhino overdrive > MXR Carbon Copy delay > Keeley compressor > Boss CE-5 chorus > T-Rex Tonebug reverb > Radial ABY amp switcher > Silvertone 1421 (10 XL) and/or Vox Pathfinder 15

bottom right: tremolo on/off switch (for the Silvertone) underneath the board: Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 2

This is the result of a recent re-arranging and so far it’s sounding great to me. With both the fuzz and overdrive on (as well as the compressor), the lead tones jump from great to “solar flare-esque”. Lots, lots and more lots of fun.

Musiquip T-Rex T-Shirt Give Away Winner

Phew. Just got back from my trip visiting Central California. Some Gilroy.. little Santa Cruz and some Monterey. Awesome trip. But now, I need to get things caught up. A couple of weeks ago I had the Musiquip Free Shirt Wednesday post where they sent me a T-Rex t-shirt to wear. I didn’t wear it, since I already *modeled* that particular shirt in a past Free Shirt Wednesday post, but I thought it would be fun to give it away. So I made a special mailing list subscriber give away. I also included a limited edition EffectsBay.com tee as well. Everyone that was subscribed to the mailing list and I selected one random entry from that list.

The winner of that give away is Shawn M. from Ocala, Florida! He was kind enough to send me a photo with his prize. I want to send a special thank you for Musiquip for sending the shirt, please check out their site!

T-Rex Tonebug Fuzz Demo

T-Rex Tonebug Fuzz DemoCurrently, I’m running a T-Rex Tonebug Fuzz give away (full details here). A few of you emailed asking what the pedal was all about. Well, good thing we demo’d the pedal! The great people at T-Rex were kind enough to send over a few Tonebugs for EffectsBay to demo, so I want stop and say thanks to T-Rex! If you get a chance, please check out T-Rex Effects for their complete listing of awesome guitar/bass pedals!

So let’s get down to the nuts and bolts. The T-Rex Tonebug Fuzz has three basic controls.

Fuzz – controls the amount of dirt/clip you want in the signal
Tone – controls how bright/dark you want it to sound
Level – controls the overall output gain of the effect

So what’s the deal with the Tonebug series? T-Rex has been pumping out some great pedals since 2002, and probably their most sought after pedal is the Replica Delay. Great quality with excellent detail to tone and effect, which also came with a equivalent price tag. With the Tonebug series, the folks at T-Rex wanted to achieve the follow – “to provide the best effects on the market for reasonable money.” The Tonebug series has been growing ever since.

For this demo, I again enlisted the help of Jimmy Rolle. Jimmy is playing is Gibson Les Paul Elegant Custom Shop guitar into a Rivera Knucklehead 100w head through a Marshall 4×12 cabinet. The cabinet is mic’d with a Shure SM57 and Fathead Ribbon Mic. Nothing is between the guitar and amp except for the T-Rex Tonebug Fuzz.

You can listen to the high quality MP3 clip via SoundCloud

Now, as I mentioned, the T-Rex Tonebug Fuzz give away is still on. It ends on Monday 9/26, so be sure to get your entry in before it’s too late!

Keith Urban Pedal Breakdown

I’ve been curious about this for a bit, so it was cool to see a Rig Rundown by Premier Guitar this morning. I’m not the biggest fan of Keith Urban, but there is no question that guy plays some mean guitar.. and his guitar tone is frickin’ good. I’ve heard of him playing through various pieces of sweet gear, but never really got to see the magic in the back in regards to his effects.  He uses a switching system on stage, so you never get a glimpse of the pedals. I’ve read a few blogs and forums explaining the set up, but I was psyched for the official full run down.

Premiere Guitar interviewed Chris Miller (guitar tech of Keith Urban) and provided a very thorough explanation of effects and amps used.

Here is the video by PremierGuitar:

Here is the break down of the various trays:
