Talking about guitar effects with Bob Balch of Fu Manchu and PlayThisRiff.com

Talking about guitar effects with Bob Balch of Fu Manuch and PlayThisRiff.comBefore I changed professions and ended up talking to computers all day, I use to be a line cook at a very popular Italian restaurant in my home town. I really did like cooking, I wasn’t so much into creating recipes, etc, but I really dug working on the line. There was a great satisfaction being in the TALL weeds of a busy night and me and the A-Team crew would crush the tickets and dominate the night. There was something special working like a team in a stressful busy restaurant.

I remember one night, a fellow cook brought in Fu Manchu‘s “In Search Of…” album and I was blown away. A short time later, I picked up “The Action is Go” and “Eatin’ Dust” albums. I officially became a fan of the band.

In the kitchen there was my friend Jimmy (who is the same Jimmy that does the demos here) as well as another cook that played drums. We started joking around that we should form a Fu Manchu tribute band and play a show or two. The stupid band name ‘!Tra-Bang!’ popped out in the middle of one of our shifts and we started practicing for a gig to lay down some Fu and melt some faces. The gig was awesome and we even laid down a few tracks to document our efforts.

A few years later, Fu Manchu actually played Missoula, which was great to finally see the band up close and personal. I remember being right in front soaking in the fuzz and kick drum.

Fast forward a few more years to today, and I sit here now reading answers to gear questions I sent to Bob Balch about effects. I think that is pretty cool indeed.

Bob Balch is not only in Fu Manchu but also runs PlayThisRiff.com which is a site to learn how to play riffs by heavier bands, and are usually taught by those guitarists themselves. Bob also does lesson videos on the site breaking down scales and techniques. If you’re interested in learning some riffage or working on some heavier solos, etc. that place is a great resource! Additionally, he teaches guitar at North County Guitar Lessons in the San Diego area and offers in house and/or private skype lessons!

So I sent Bob a few questions asking about his latest pedal board below:

Talking about guitar effects with Bob Balch of Fu Manuch and PlayThisRiff.comCreepy Fingers Creepyface Fuzz
Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor
Dunlop GCB-95 Wah
Boss TU-2 Tuner
BBE Soul Vibe Phaser
Electro-Harmonix Memory Man Deluxe w/Hazarai

- Over the years, when I think of Fu Manchu, I think fuzz. What fuzz pedals have been on your board or used in the studio throughout the years?
I started with a regular Fuzz Face. I used that for years. Then I tried a Vintage Tone Project Fuzz. I had one custom made and the dude put my pic on it. Funny. Now I play a Creepy Fingers Creepy Face. I’ve used tons of different ones in the studio, but those are/were my main live ones.

- Currently, I see that you’re using the Creepy Fingers Fuzz. What did Brad Davis do right to the fuzz that makes this *the* fuzz on your board?
It has tons of gain but doesn’t get muddy. And it doesn’t feedback much either. I always wanted to most amount of fuzz with the most clarity.

- Is that Creepy Fingers Fuzz a prototype, or standard issue. Can anyone get that same exact fuzz?
You can get the same, but I have #1!!!!!!!

- Have you always been a germanium type of fuzz dude, or did you dabble in some silicon based transistors in the past?
Rarely. If it sounds good though I’ll play it.

- In my experience, you can get some pretty crazy reaction with a buffer in front of the fuzz. Have you ever explored that?
No I haven’t.

- Have you considered having multiple fuzzes on the board for different tone options?
Yes, but I haven’t yet. I just recently got a pedal board with power. I was going old school with 9volts for years. More pedals in that respect = more crap to worry about in my opinion.

- Why do you prefer the fuzz to be the first pedal in the line?
For a bigger sounding Wah.

- When I look at your board, I like the simplicity. Fuzz, Wah, Delay, Phase. I can see how this is perfect for Fu Manchu. Do you have other projects (or even with PlayThisRiff.com) that you need a board with more variety?
I have been working with tap tempo pedals a lot more with my own stuff. PlayThisRiff.com is mostly other bands showing what they play, so anything goes there.

- After your fuzz, you have the Boss NS-2 noise suppressor. Is there a particular reason why you have that in that location?
If it is on the other side of the wah it takes away a ton of sweep. I learned that the hard way after buying a new wah. Damn!

- In the past you use to ride the MXR Phase 100, but now you’re using the BBE Soul Vibe. What caused you to change? And why did you pick the BBE Soul Vibe?
BBE gave me that, and it sounds killer. I originally used a MXR that I bought off of J from WHITE ZOMBIE. After touring with WHITE ZOMBIE and FU MANCHU that Phaser got phased out. Our singer still plays his MXR though.

- If memory serves me correct, you use to run the phaser through the effects loop. What were the pros/cons of going through the effects loop with the modulation?
It just sounded more intense with the Marshall 2000. I used to play an 800 and it didn’t need the loop.

- Have you ever placed the delay in the effects loop?
Yes. I like it both ways for different reasons.

- You’re currently running the Electro-Harmonix Memory Man w/Hazarai.. a great sounding and feature rich pedal for sure. What other delays were in the line up in the past, and how is this Memory Man superior to those other delays?
I had a MXR carbon copy, and a Boss Digital Delay. I used to have a Washburn Analog too. The Memory Man is by far my favorite. I still discover new sounds on that thing after 1 year of touring with it.

- What amp(s) are you using right now?
Marshall 2000.

- For someone interested in playing heavier music, and wanting to pick up some effects, what would you recommend as a good introduction?
Creepy Fingers!

- Here are some EffectsBay staple questions that I like to ask…If you could only keep one pedal on your board, what pedal would that be? and why? The deserted island question.
Probably the Fuzz in FU MANCHU. Delay otherwise.

- What pedal are you most interested in adding.. something that’s been in the back of the mind, and just waiting for the right reason to pull the trigger on it
I want to get any delay from this link http://bit.ly/y3CHwa

- What pedal on your board do you not like, yet it consistently remains.. and you have no idea why? If any?
None really. They all serve a purpose.

- What pedal on your board, if any, would you like to upgrade or try something different?
Wah for sure. I’ve had it modded before, but I never tried any other ones. Oh wait, Lightning Bolt wah I think it was called. That thing is rare and badass. I used it on the intro to the FU song “Webfoot Witchhat.” Check it out!

Thanks Bob! Make sure you follow PlayThisRiff on Twitter and ‘like’ them on Facebook for daily lessons and news!

Good deal on BBE Green Screamer 808 Overdrive at Amazon

Good deal on BBE Green Screamer 808 Overdrive at AmazonI’ve posted this deal in the past. They do pop up every once and awhile, but wanted to point it out again in case any of you wanted a decent 808 style overdrive for a good price. This is for the BBE Green Screamer Vintage 808 Overdrive. It lists at $149.00, but you usually see it available in the $100 range. It’s currently on sale for only $67.32 and is available with FREE super saver shipping.  Not a bad price.

Here is the official description of the BBE Green Screamer:

The BBE Green Screamer effect pedal is a vintage overdrive capable of producing a dynamic range of smooth and warm overdrive tones associated with vintage tube amps. The overdrive pedal features rugged construction that can take a beating, thanks to its heavy-duty die-cast chassis. Fat knurled knobs let you dial in your ultimate tone with your toes. The status LED light lets you see the pedal is engaged even on a dimly lit stage. A non-skid pad on the bottom reduces movement, so you don’t have to chase your pedal across the floor. True hardwire bypass switching ensures it has no effect on your tone when its disengaged. The BBE overdrive pedal’s easy access battery compartment is included so you don’t expose your circuitry every time you need to change the battery.

The BBE Green Screamer pedal delivers a creamy, tube-like, dynamically responsive overdrive that won’t mask the tone of your guitar and amp. This pedal has three main controls: Gain, Tone, and Level, and a true hardware bypass switch, and can be powered by a 9V battery or AC adapter. Use a Green Screamer pedal as a stand-alone overdrive, adding overdrive to a single-channel amplifier. You can also use it as a solo booster also, not necessarily as a transparent solo booster, but a booster that has a midrange characteristic to boost solos or just to chunk up rhythms.

Here is a video of the Green Screamer in action by ScanProAudioTV:

Again, the BBE Green Screamer is on sale for only $67.32 at Amazon.com!

Pedal Line Friday – 9/30 – Jeff Bailey

Today’s pedal line is from Jeff Bailey. If you have a pedal line (doesn’t have to be in a board) for your rig, please email me a photo, bio, description of pedals and routing to pedallineateffectsbaydotcom. Every Friday I’ll showcase a pedal line submission. Make sure you include any links to your band or music page.

Pedal Line Friday - 9/30 - Jeff BaileyHey my name is Jeff Bailey. I usually play bass in my bands The Greenleafs and Southern Harmony. My bass rig is just a chord, bass, and 2 tens.  I love to create new music though so I have a guitar rig too.  This is what I use when I just go jam with my buddies just for the hell of it.  I have tried to make it my own and get a sound that is unique. This is my current setup and like many it is always changing.

Foundation: Gator board with gator power supply.

It is just big enough and super easy to move and doesn’t slip and all that kind of stuff.

This is the order

Crybaby classic GCB-95F

Sounds like a wah should.  At least that’s what I think.

BBE FREQ Boost
If you have never used one of these you should. It takes the signal and gives it this awesome boosted mid treble shine that pushes a tube amp into the sky.

Homebrew Electronics UFO
This is my newest and I say the rawest sounding pedal I have.  It has a wall of fuzz that is super tunable and then the octave up takes it to another level literally. It is the true ultimate fuzz octave.

Visual sound route 66
Gigantic.  I don’t mind though because it is a compressor and an overdrive.  The drive side is modeled after a ts808 but adds a bass boost. I don’t use the bass boost all the time but sometimes you just need it. The compressor sounds just like a compressor. Compressed.

MXR Distortion+
This is my core distortion sound.  Its an old one like 78 I believe.  You have to have a dirty amp to work it to the full effect.  It nails 70s distortion because it is.

DOD FX65
An analog chorus pedal for the 80s.  It is the first pedal that I ever bought. (I am not that old I bout it at a pawn shop.) I would recommend it to anyone that was looking for chorus. It is simple and silky.

Electro-Harmonix Stereo Pulsar
So tremolo is kind of my weakness. It is a vibe that a lot of people overlook.  Vibrato you can get from a string shake but tremolo is another story.  This one is variable shape you can have a notchy square wave or a smooth triangle.  You can also change the emphasis of the sound to the back or front of the wave. Very choice. This is where is spilt my signal into my Univox u45. I have a little tuner (not pictured) that I use to shut of the Univox.  If you have never heard stereo tremolo from mismatched amps you haven’t lived.

MXR Carbon Copy
Lastly some echo. I like analog delay and this is the analog delay.  It is super warm and when I want to do a delay solo it can do some self-oscillation.

My primary Amp is a Blues Jr. Tweed and I play a Gibson Les Paul Mahogany most of the time. Thanks for letting me share. It is one of those things that makes me feel alive when I am playing.

Pedal Line Friday - 9/30 - Jeff BaileyUPDATE

Jeff contacted me and let me know that he has a updated board since his submission. Here is a pic:

Pedal Line Friday - 9/30 - Jeffrey Bailey - UpdatedDetails:

I removed the chorus and added a small stone phaser Russian made. I uploaded a pic of the rearranged board.

Ehx sovtek small stone
Its a super cool 4 stager with a color switch that runs a fifth stage that makes it kinda invert and real thick like.  Really simple and adds a ton of cool sounds.

Pedal Line Friday – 9/16 – Dr. David Mednick

Today’s pedal line is from Dr. David Mednick. If you have a pedal line (doesn’t have to be in a board) for your rig, please email me a photo, bio, description of pedals and routing to pedallineateffectsbaydotcom. Every Friday I’ll showcase a pedal line submission. Make sure you include any links to your band or music page.

Pedal Line Friday - 9/16 - Dr. David MednickHi,
I’ve been using a Boss GT-10 Digital Multi Effects pedal, but wanted to add into it’s effects loop some stand alone stompboxes, mostly analog. I have: MXR Carbon Copy, MXR Phase 90 Script Custom Shop, ISP Decimator, Tech 21 Liverpool for the Beatles/Brian May sounds, BBE Green Screamer as Tubescreamer OD clone, Digitech Jimi Hendrix  Pedal Modeler, Eventide SPACE for Modulated Reverb with the greatest presets for spacing out, and the control pedal for my Fender SuperSonic 22 FSR in Surf Green.

I am not a musician by profession, I’m a Clinical Psychologist trying to learn and take music seriously now for fun with myself, friends, and just starting to gig a song here and there with my guitar instructor.

Also pictured is my Rickenbacker 381V69 6 string, Fender American Deluxe Ash Stratocaster in Aged Cherry, Fender American Deluxe Ash Telecaster in Butterscotch, and the Supersonic 22 FSR in Surf Green.

Pedal Line Friday - 9/16 - Dr. David Mednick - guitars

UPDATE
Dr. David Mednick sent me a update to his pedal line since he originally sent it to me. A few changes to report, so I wanted to list these below!

Pedal Line Friday – 9/16 – Dr. David MednickI swapped out the Carbon Copy, which was great, for the TC Electronics Flashback, which is much more flexible and is fantastic.  I also swapped out the BBE Green Screamer and added a Rockbox Boiling Point for overdrive and distortion and a Way Huge Swollen Pickle for Fuzz and Distortion, they compliment each other well, Boiling Point is more Tube Screamer like with picking/strumming dynamics, and the Way Huge is much heavier.

Pedal Line Friday – 6/17 – Shane Pachica

Today’s pedal line is from Shane Pachica (@Shane_TheCowboy). If you have a pedal line (doesn’t have to be in a board) for your rig, please email me a photo, bio, description of pedals and routing to pedallineateffectsbaydotcom. Every Friday I’ll showcase a pedal line submission. Make sure you include any links to your band or music page.

Pedal Line Friday - 6/17 - Shane Pachica
This is my double board

Boards:

Furman sbp8
home made pedal board with electric tape

One Spot w/ daisy chain connected to the furman to power the homemade pedal board

Pedal Chain:

(amp) Crate V33H class A tube head on a Crate V212 cab >
- Line 6 echo park- tons of features, tape, analog or digital delay sounds, swell, dotted eighth, triplets, ducking, panning, and 2 random rhythm modes, tap tempo
- Rogues analog delay- to beefen up solos, cheap one trick pony
- TC Electronics Nova Modulator- my newest toy, unbelievable amount of features, yet can be very simple if you want it. You can have it in manual mode and use it like a single effect, or program up to 18 presets,. You can set each preset to have two different effects at the same time. Modes are: Chorus, Trichorus, Flanger, Through Zero Flanger, Phaser, Tremolo, and Vibrato. Perfect for saving space and money if you use modulation sparingly. Tap tempo
- BBE Sonic Maximizer- cleans up the muddiness of any amp, gives life and punch back to your sound. This pedal is ALWAYS ON
- Digitech Bad Monkey OD- great sound and versatility for a very small price
- Vox Valvetone V810 OD- discontinued. Very sweet, transparent, Vox-y sounding OD. Killer looks with its chrome design, and that signature VOX logo. You stay classy San Diego!
- Rogue Compressor- when you need that extra squeeze and sustain out of your solos
- Boss FV50 Volume pedal- for siren swells, or to control the grit on my OD’s
- (tuner out) Korg Pitch Black Tuner- if all I could have is one pedal… The tuner is left on constantly, connected to the volume pedals tuner out, so i can tune with sound, or silently depending on the volume pedal
- Digitech EX-7 Expression Factory- 7 modes, Crybaby Wah, Vox Wah, Digitech Space Station, Digitech Whammy, Unichord Univibe, Leslie 145 Rotary Speaker, A/DAFlanger. Amazing sounds, great versatility, great features, especially for the money. Plus there is a Digitech DF7 distortion factory built inside. Space Station and Whammy alone are worth the price
- (home made FS3X footswitch) allows me to go up or down the modes, or turn on the distortion on the EX-7
- Digitech Flanger- my old langer, no longer needed since i got the Nova Mod. Although, it does have a lot of features including trigger flange, constant fall/rise flange, and a synth-like step flanger
- Danelectro Fish and Chips EQ- used as a mid/volume boost, and also coupled with distortion to get that underwater distortion sound
- Marshall JH-1 Jackhammer Metal Distortion- a very convincing Marshall stack crunch
- Digitech DF-7 Distortion Factory- 7 classic distortion modes that sound fantastic. TS9, DOD 250, Boss DS1, ProCo RAT, Boss Metal Zone, Digitech Metal Master, and Big Muff Pi Fuzz
- Morley Tremonti Wah- ultimate shrieking solo wah

> (guitar) Les Paul Ultra II- Classic LP with quilt top and a Shadow Nanomag
> Acoustic pickup in the 24th fret, w/ stereo outputs

- (not connected) BBE AM64 American Metal distortion

Pedal Line Friday - 6/17 - Shane Pachica
And those are my babies, each with their own individual characteristics. And I know the ins and outs of all of them. Since I play in a worship team at church, I need all my equipment to be very versatile, without compromising tone. I have to be able to get virtually any kind of sound out of my rig. The left board is the main, worship essential board. No heavy distortion needed, just layered OD, and multiple delays with tap tempo. Volume pedal and Space station for ethereal swells, and angel like organ sounds. I guess the second board is for heavier rock. Marshall Jackhammer, EQ and a solo wah. With all my equipment, I get what I want… a lot of versatility, and great tone!

thanks,
Shane
