Rig Rundown – Nels Cline (Wilco Tour)

Rig Rundown - Nels Cline (Wilco Tour)Today I was super stoked to see a new Rig Rundown featuring Nels Cline of Wilco on PremiereGuitar. I’ve been a fan of Nels from a distance for years, but never really got to learn about his gear until this blog. Coincidentally, I did a pedal board breakdown of his board a while back (you can read it here – Nels Cline – Wilco – Pedal Board), but this video is fantastic. Nels really goes into detail about his guitars, amp and his effects. I really like it when artists go into ‘why’ they like a particular pedal. That kind of insight is very useful when looking at new pedals to purchase or understanding issues you might be having with your current pedals.

Here is the video by PremiereGuitar:

Here is the breakdown of pedals of his main guitar board:

Nels Cline – Wilco – Pedal Board

Over on Premier Guitars Facebook page, they posted some fresh shots of Nels Cline’s pedalboard while on tour with Wilco. It’s nice to see a recent photo of his pedals. There were two unidentified pedals there.. so if you can help ID them, please comment below (Pedals have been identified!).

Nels mentioned he feels awkward talking about his pedals on his website. Here is the relevant snippet:

OK, people. You all seem fixated, I dare say HYPNOTIZED, by all my damn effects boxes. So here you go: all about my NEW PEDAL BOARD, being used with Wilco and anything else I can find to drag all 75 pounds of it (including swanky road case) to! I confess that it is a bit irritating to me that people seem so fixated on HOW MANY pedals I have. This is because there seems to be something double-edged about it: a kind of fascination mixed with feelings of skepticism and/or disgust, as though it’s somehow amazing that I can keep track of it all and at the same time I must be some kind of charlatan to NEED so many pedals! Well, what can I say?

Nels has two boards. The first is his primary guitar pedal board and the second is his ‘ambient/noise’ board.

Sune Rose Wagner – The Raveonettes – Pedal Board

The RaveonettesThe last few months, I’ve been listening to a lot of The Raveonettes. I only have Raven in the Grave for now, but I’ve been really liking that album. Very dark. Reverb with reverb added it to it. Vocals that sound a million miles away. Nice easy grooves that make me feel like I’m on a road trip every time I listen to it. The band is a 3 piece, with Sharon Foo laying down the vox and Sune rose Wagner playing guitar. This band is from Denmark… and when I listen to these guys, I’m reminded of Jesus and Mary Chain in a pretty serious way.

Today, I wanted to break down Sune Rose Wagner’s board. For those of you that are familiar with the Raveonettes, you’ll see some of the pieces of his tone puzzle. I want to note that this photo is the most recent I could find (2009). There are some TC Electronic pedals there, but this looks to be Sune trying out some TC Electronic  samples.  I’ll still include them in the breakdown though.

Boss RV-5 Reverb
MXR Jimi Hendrix System Octave Fuzz

TC Electronic Nova Delay

Please let me know if anything is missing or incorrect. If you have a more recent photo.. please let me know by commenting or emailing me!

UPDATE

Got word about the June 2011 Premier Guitar article. Has some changes to the pedal line

He’s using a ZVex Fuzz Factory and a Boss DD-20 Giga Delay. Looks like the Boss RV-3 is off the board.

Brent Hinds of Mastodon Pedal Board Breakdown

Brent Hinds of Mastodon with his Electrical Guitar Company (EGC) Flying VMastodon is a great band if you’re into the heavy. They do it right and have been doing it right for a while. They just came out with their latest release – The Hunter and it’s pretty awesome. Mastodon is a 4 piece from Atlanta, GA and I wanted to focus on the guitarist/vox Brent Hinds for this post. I’ve also been digging Brent Hinds since he’s been getting into some aluminum guitars and you can see him play a plexi (similar to Dan Armstrong) Flying V with aluminum neck. The guitar is a EGC (Electrical Guitar Company). I personally own a couple of EGCs and they’re pretty damn great.

So this pedal breakdown video comes from PremierGuitar where they go into Brent’s rig as well as Bill Kelliher’s rig:

Here is the breakdown of the pedals on Brent’s board:

Brent Hinds of Mastodon Pedal Board BreakdownSKB StageFive pedalboard

Morpheus Droptune
Ibanez Tube Screamer TS808HW
Boss GE-7 Equalizer
Boss DD-5 Digital Delay
Monster Effects Mastortion x2
Boss TU-2 Tuner
MXR MC402 Custom Audio Electronics Boost

Let me know if there are any updates/changes to this board. This video and photo was from 2010, so I’m sure a few things have changed since then. Please comment below or send me an email from the contact form.

DIY Pedalboard Project

Wow. First off, this is the 700th post on EffectsBay.com. Crazy! For the 700th post, I’m super stoked to post this guest post by Mojo’s Army out of San Francisco. A couple weeks ago, I saw his video on putting together a DIY pedalboard, and asked if he would be interested in writing a guest post. That goes for you readers out there. Have a interesting tip, story, review, etc. Let me know, and I would be happy to post it. Obviously, needs to be about guitars, pedals, etc.

Mojo's Army - DIY Pedalboard ProjectLike many musicians on a budget, I look for bargains and take on DIY projects whenever possible. Faced with the need for a pedalboard, I thought it would be fun & frugal to put together my own using scrap wood and a hardshell suitcase. The whole project cost me less than $25 and only took about an hour and a half! Some basic tools and materials are assumed to be on hand. It’s a good idea to lay your essential pedals out in as small an area as you can fit them to make sure the size you’re looking at will work. You can also make this project without the case.

Now, I’ll admit I had a harder time locating a suitable suitcase than I expected. Definitely a case of something disappearing as soon as you start searching! After looking everywhere I could think of, I found one that was just the right size in my in-laws’ garage (they never throw anything away). Luckily they were willing to part with it with a little persuasion. I had expected to spend $10 at a thrift shop.

Once I stripped the lining out and cleaned the inside, I measured the case for the largest rectangle that would fit. Rounding down to account for the foam, I came up with a 15″ x 22″ board size. I cut & lightly sanded some 1/2″ scrap plywood and then cut a piece of 1×4 scrap for the heel. I didn’t want it to be too steeply angled, accounting for the depth of the case and also too much of an angle would mean that the large diameter rubber feet I bought for $3 wouldn’t grip as well at the top of the board.

The low-nap carpet was just a scrap from a remodel at work. I had intended to pick up a $5 doormat for this use. A yard of felt or the type of fabric that covers amps would work well too, just wrap around the back of the board and staple before screwing on the heel. The foam was from electronics shipping boxes from work (free). You could get clever and get a bed egg crate a size bigger than your bed and cut it down, then use the big piece on your bed and the cutaway part in the case, giving you a net zero cost for the purposes of your project.

The assembly of the board is straightforward: wood glue and 3 screws for the heel, polyurethane adhesive ($5) + staples for the carpet, then the drawer pull handles ($3 each) were centered on the sides to get the board out of the case easily. For the case, I thought I was going to use the poly caulk adhesive for the foam, but it was too thick so I went with 3M spray adhesive instead. Definitely dry fit the foam before gluing!

If you’ve used your pedals much you’ll want to clean the bottom with alcohol before attaching the stickyback Velcro ($9 for 15′). The rest is just putting your pedals together in the order you want them. Seriously, if you have a couple of hours you can put together your own board easily in less time than it took me longer to put together the video and write up the description! Hope you find this helpful. Rock on!

Materials List

case:
used Samsonite suitcase
foam
3M spray adhesive

board:
1/2″ plywood
additional wood for heel
carpet/felt/doormat to cover board
polyurethane adhesive caulk (or spray adhesive)
“wire” style drawer pulls (2)
roll of Velcro
rubber grip feet

Bio:
Mojo’s Army
is a San Francisco Bay Area music project consisting mainly of music-obsessed Mojo, a drummer and graphic artist turned songwriter/guitarist/producer. Mojo first appeared on the independent online music scene in 2008 with the release of his wicked industrial cover of Malvina Reynolds’ classic “Little Boxes”. Mojo’s Army has continued to release music steadily ever since, with a full length album “It’s Hard” in 2009, an electric cover of Marcy Playground’s “Sex and Candy” and an EP of originals in 2010 (“Summer’s End”), along with a few remixes and other tracks thrown in along the way.

The project’s heavy, groovy sound is a true Bay Area blend of genres – hard rock, punk, pop, and industrial with just enough blues to bring it all together. Major influences are early heavy metal bands like Black Sabbath and Judas Priest, and modern hard rock / industrial bands like Nine Inch Nails and Rob Zombie. Find them online at mojosarmy.com.

Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore Pedalboard

Last week I posted Lee Ranaldo’s board, so it’s only fitting to post Thurston’s. Interesting item to note, Thurston played a MXR Blue Box for years, but the latest gear shots don’t show it in the line up (most likely replaced by the MXR JH-3S Octave Fuzz). Years ago, I heard he (and Lee at the time) were both using the Audio Crowther Hotcake, and that was one of my driving forces to pick up my copy of the Hotcake. Also, on his board is a Sitori Sonic’s pedal.. which I’ve been hearing interesting things about (recently that Man or Astroman have been sporting them).

Thurston has two small pedalboards.
Pedalboard #1

Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore Pedalboard 1

MXR M-101 Phase 90
Sitori Sonics Harem Fuzz

Pedalboard #2

Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore Pedalboard 2

Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore Pedalboard 3

Mutron Wah-Volume
Electro-Harmonix Big Muff (Sovtek version)
Crowther Audio Hot Cake Overdrive (Version 2 – Presence knob)
MXR JH-3S Jimi Hendrix Octave Fuzz

Again, the Sonic Youth website, is the best source of information regarding their gear. Kudos for them to keep the gearology up.

Throne Pedalboards

Thrown Pedalboard EmpireBoardI’ve mentioned before, and I’ll mention it again, one of the great things about having this blog is meeting people doing cool things. I really dig builders, trying to carve their place in the world of guitar/bass products.. from effects pedals, to instruments, etc. It’s about identifying innovation and targeting necessity. It’s hard, so I definitely admire that any one that tries.

Thrown Pedalboard EmpireBoard

Today I wanted to talk about Throne Pedalboards who make quality custom hardwood pedalboards out of Louisville, Kentucky. Donovan Sears is the individual who started the business where he was looking for a pedalboard that … “looked like it belonged in the same room with his guitars”.  He couldn’t find it.. so he built it and the rest is history.

Currently Throne Pedalboards has three pedalboard designs:
The Empire Pedalboard
The Knight Pedalboard
The Monarch Pedalboard

I asked Donovan to let me know about this his business, and this is what he had to say:

I am currently studying luthiery. It is something that I have always wanted to do and finally decided to take the plunge. So I started experimenting with wood and cutting different shapes – just getting used to different processes. So I decided to build something of actual use. About that time a I realized my pedalboard was about 8 years old…and it hit me. Why doesn’t anyone offer a unique approach to pedalboard design – an approach that borrows from all of the beautiful and innovative things going on in the world of boutique guitars?

So for the past couple of months I have been building, redesigning and starting over, 3 different models of pedalboards. They range in price from $169.99 to $339.99. The lower-end boards being made from baltic birch ply and the higher-end models being all hardwood. The Empire and Knight board designs were born from the idea that the shape of the pedalboard could be designed in a way that made it easier on the guitarist to reach both ends of their pedalboard without having to side-step. The Monarch (the high-end model) pull from the beautiful lines and sculpting found in guitars. I don’t have one of these complete just yet, but plans are to have one ready by the end of November 2010. The one I am building now has a koa top & braces and sits on a base of white oak. All of my boards to date are stained, some with danish oil to let the wood do the talking. I do not have plans to offer painting as an option at this point.

I have to say, Throne Pedalboards look quite nice, if you get moment, check out his site!

Josh Homme’s pedalboard – Them Crooked Vultures

So I’ve been listening to Them Crooked Vultures, and was curious what Josh Homme has been riding with as far as gear lately. I’ve seen a few shots of pedals for his Queens of the Stoneage setup, but I wanted to see something new. I stumbled across a few pics and I’ll try to break a few the pedals down. If you see anything missing and know what it is.. please let me know. Likewise, if you see something wrong, let me know as well. These photos were originally posted by niceguyollie at the HC forums.

josh homme pedalboard 1On pedalboard #1 shot, it looks like a old Morley Fuzz Wah, a newer Fulltone FatBoost FB-3, Fulltone Ultimate Octave, Electro-Harmonix Micro POG, Electro-Harmonix Multiplexer and older Dunlop Crybaby QZ-1 Q-Zone.

josh homme pedalboard 2Pedalboard #2 we have Moog Moogerfooger MF-104Z Analog Delay, Moog Moogerfooger MF-101 Low Pass Envelope Filter, older Echodrive (w/o bypass switch), Boss RE-20 Space Echo Delay, Ernie Ball Volume Pedal and a old original Univox Super Fuzz – probably from the early 1970s. Not sure about the black box next to the super fuzz.

Lastly, Josh has a couple more pedals on top of his amp set up:

josh homme pedalboard 3Looks like a older Fulltone FatBoost v-1 a Boss GE-7 Equalizer with a slight mid notch boost. I’ll include the shot of his amps.. thought those were interesting. Not sure, but I’m guessing he’s switching or adding a amp with the Fat Boost and mid boost for leads, etc.

Anyway.. thought it was pretty interesting! Hope you enjoyed the post!

Mike Campbell of the Heartbreakers Interview (DunlopTV)

This is another great interview on DunlopTV featuring Mike Campbell, the guitarist from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Couple of interesting items in this interview.. particularly his cool guitars, minimal/small amp set up, and the use of pedals in line on stage. I also took a screen snap of Mike Campbell’s pedalboard and tried to identify all the pedals there. Besides what looks to be a true bypass switch, there is a unidentified ‘Reverse’ pedal there.

But first, here is the video by DunlopTV:

Here is a shot of Mike Campbell’s pedalboard:

I’ve identified the following pedals below:

Way Huge Camel Toe – Triple Overdrive
Line 6 DL4 Delay
Line 6 MM4 Modulation

David Gilmour’s Pedal Board (let’s try this again)

Last week, I posted a video that I naively thought was David Gilmour’s pedal board. So, to make up for that, I thought I’d do some digging around this afternoon and find the real thing. This quest turned out to be pretty cool and learned a few things (especially more about Pete Cornish!).

At Harmony Central there was a post by Marc_G that showed David’s set up, which I’m showing below:

gilmourpedalboarduf8

So, the ‘box’ got me curious. This is the custom pedal board by Pete Cornish, which he calls the Mk.2. Below is a photo of a Mk.2

ldavidgilmour

I found this great interview with Pete Cornish where he goes into good detail. You can read the entire article here. I wanted to include a small excerpt from that interview showing what the pedals are in that particular board.

Pete Cornish Tube Buffer/ Demeter Compulator/ Send – Return #1 for additional effects if required/ Pete Cornish G-2/ Pete Cornish P-1/ 2 X BK Butler Tube Driver plus 2 X Pete Cornish Tube Buffer/ Send – Return  #2 for additional effects if required/ Boss GE-7/ Custom Volume Pedal insert/ Pete Cornish Tape Echo Simulator with Pete Cornish Tube Buffer/ MXR Digital Delay (Rack mount) with Pete Cornish Tube Buffer/ 2 X Outputs with Pete Cornish Tube Line Drivers. Send-Returns 1 and 3 have full range gain adjustments on the back panel so that any type of effects can be interfaced (pedal signal level or line level for rack units). Send-Return 2 is fixed gain at guitar level. One of the outputs connects to a rack mount Sound On Sound Interface.

If you’re interested in Pete Cornish and his pedal boards, please check out his web site.

Remember, if you like reading about these pedals and seeing videos reviews from others, please subscribe to the RSS feed and get notified via email when there are new postings!
