T-Rex Tonebug Fuzz Demo

T-Rex Tonebug Fuzz DemoCurrently, I’m running a T-Rex Tonebug Fuzz give away (full details here). A few of you emailed asking what the pedal was all about. Well, good thing we demo’d the pedal! The great people at T-Rex were kind enough to send over a few Tonebugs for EffectsBay to demo, so I want stop and say thanks to T-Rex! If you get a chance, please check out T-Rex Effects for their complete listing of awesome guitar/bass pedals!

So let’s get down to the nuts and bolts. The T-Rex Tonebug Fuzz has three basic controls.

Fuzz – controls the amount of dirt/clip you want in the signal
Tone – controls how bright/dark you want it to sound
Level – controls the overall output gain of the effect

So what’s the deal with the Tonebug series? T-Rex has been pumping out some great pedals since 2002, and probably their most sought after pedal is the Replica Delay. Great quality with excellent detail to tone and effect, which also came with a equivalent price tag. With the Tonebug series, the folks at T-Rex wanted to achieve the follow – “to provide the best effects on the market for reasonable money.” The Tonebug series has been growing ever since.

For this demo, I again enlisted the help of Jimmy Rolle. Jimmy is playing is Gibson Les Paul Elegant Custom Shop guitar into a Rivera Knucklehead 100w head through a Marshall 4×12 cabinet. The cabinet is mic’d with a Shure SM57 and Fathead Ribbon Mic. Nothing is between the guitar and amp except for the T-Rex Tonebug Fuzz.

You can listen to the high quality MP3 clip via SoundCloud

Now, as I mentioned, the T-Rex Tonebug Fuzz give away is still on. It ends on Monday 9/26, so be sure to get your entry in before it’s too late!

Keith Urban Pedal Breakdown

I’ve been curious about this for a bit, so it was cool to see a Rig Rundown by Premier Guitar this morning. I’m not the biggest fan of Keith Urban, but there is no question that guy plays some mean guitar.. and his guitar tone is frickin’ good. I’ve heard of him playing through various pieces of sweet gear, but never really got to see the magic in the back in regards to his effects.  He uses a switching system on stage, so you never get a glimpse of the pedals. I’ve read a few blogs and forums explaining the set up, but I was psyched for the official full run down.

Premiere Guitar interviewed Chris Miller (guitar tech of Keith Urban) and provided a very thorough explanation of effects and amps used.

Here is the video by PremierGuitar:

Here is the break down of the various trays:

Keith Urban - Pedal Tray 1Tray 1:

Demeter COMP-1 Opto Compulator
Wampler Ego Compressor
Analogman Juicer Compressor
Boss Graphic Equalizer GE-7

T-Rex Tonebug Fuzz Give Away

T-Rex Tonebug Fuzz Give AwayCONTEST IS CLOSED

Yep, it’s that time again. Time for another pedal give away at EffectsBay.com! This time I have a brand new T-Rex Tonebug Fuzz to give away! This is another great pedal from T-Rex’s Tonebug series. The T-Rex Tonebug Fuzz normally sells for $99.00 (MSRP: $125), so this is a great pick-up for free.

I would like to send a special thank you to the folks at T-Rex Effects for sponsoring this give away. We did a review of the T-Rex Tonebug Fuzz and will be posting that shortly as well, so keep an eye out for that. For now,  here is the official description of the T-Rex Tonebug Fuzz:

Part of the acclaimed ToneBug Series, the T-Rex ToneBug Fuzz is a fuzz box done right, with exactly the controls you want and no unnecessary complications. You get a Fuzz control, a Level control, and then a great Tone control that lets you fine-tune the timbre of your fuzz to your exact taste. And after all, YOUR TASTE is what T-Rex pedals are all about!

Of all the effects that can really make an electric guitar solo really stand out, fuzz is clearly the king. Insanely dirty, but also soft and creamy, fuzz differs from distortion by being far more extreme – boosting the guitar’s signal until it clips so much, it turns from a sine wave into a square wave.

However you choose to describe it, fuzz can utterly transform the sound of your guitar and any song you use it on. And right from Dave Davies’ proto-grunge on “You Really Got Me” and Keith Richards’ hellacious dirt on “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”, fuzz has helped shape the sonic world of rock ‘n’ roll.

Part of the T-Rex Tonebug series
Fuzz is part of the T-Rex Tonebug series, a growing line of pedals that combines the classic T-Rex tone found in our high-end pedals with intuitive, uncomplicated controls – all at a price that any guitarist can afford.

I’m going to select one random entry on September 26th. I will email that random entry asking for the answer to the question listed below. They will have 24 hours to respond with the answer. If the 24 hours passes, I will select a new random entry and repeat the process until I receive confirmation from the winner.  This is open to everyone. Yes, that means international! Also, one entry per person.  Please read that last sentence again… “one” “entry” “per” “person”. And when I say ‘everyone’, I mean anyone older than 18 (sorry minors).

The submission form will be open until September 26th (Monday) 12PM MST.

On top of that, I’m going to sweeten the deal. If you ‘LIKE’ EffectsBay on Facebook and you’re selected as the winner, I’ll throw in a extra prize – PRIZE 1 (x3) OR PRIZE 2 OR PRIZE 3 (x3). If you’re the winner (and like EffectsBay), you get to pick which one of the bonus prizes.

So, it’s pretty much a no-brainer to like Effectsbay on Facebook!

So the question is…. “Right now, who is your favorite band/artist.. and why?

Community Question: The one pedal – results/responses

EffectsBay Community QuestionYesterday I asked the following community question – If you had to pick one pedal to have for the rest of your life, what pedal would that be? I wanted to see what you all had to say about this. This is a great way to learn about other pedals, and to see what people are passionate about. Clearly, any pedal mentioned, is something worth considering in the future when in search of a new pedal.

I’ve had a few emails asking me what my answer to the question is – since I didn’t answer it in the previous post. Like I mentioned I thought it was pretty easy, but it’s not. One person mentioned his TU-2. Even though it’s not an effect, I would put that on the list, but since that’s not very exciting. I think I would put the Paul Cochrane Tim overdrive as the top. I use to use a Ibanez TS-9 and replaced it with the Tim for the lead overdrive boost and that thing is pretty awesome. #2 would be my T-Rex Replica delay. Lately I’ve been messing around with delay parts so been having lots of fun with that and a Boss DD-3.

So anyway, enough about me, let’s see the responses. This is a collection of Twitter, Facebook and Comments so we can get them all in one place. If you missed the original post and want to contribute, please comment below!

Responses from Facebook

Andrew J. Masterson With my current collection, I’d have to go with my Boss DD-20. It’s not my ideal choice, but I have to say a delay is the single most important effect I have to have.
Justin Vigeant Has to be an overdrive… and the one I have had most luck with is the Fulltone Full Drive 2.
Joshua Dawson HA! As soon as Omar bawked, I got upset. The poor man clearly likes pedals, but he’s never fallen in love. Mine is easy: my Ibanez DDL, the green one, not the blue DL10. It’s a sweet, versatile, durable delay pedal with a great, warm analog feel and an unlatched hold-delay mode that I modded for fast, glitchy stutter delay. I could not live without that pedal.
Jeffrey Bailey I would have to say a carbon copy. It sounds amazing and there is no replacement for a good delay. I run mine at 18v and it is the only pedal I must have.
Ggiiaaxx Seldom DMM organic beauty
Dave N Michele Clinton Fulltone GT500!
Ian Ross Id be really torn between my ol reliable tubescreamer and my airplane flanger….. the flanger is signed by Paul Gilbert so its more of a sentimental thing than a functionality thing.
Paul Dmytrewycz It’s not an effect, but I’ve always said that the one pedal I own that I absolutely cannot function without is my Boss TU-2 tuner.
Andrew Clock DMM or EHX Holiest Grail
Jeremy M Cohen Boss Chorus CE-5
Kelevra Villalobos My Frankenmuff (Big Muff modified)… i really need that fuzz
Brian Mack I’ve got a Keeley modded Sparkle Drive that has become my fave recently. I can’t imagine ever getting rid of it.

Responses from Twitter

will_spicer @effectsbay Morley little alligator & tied 2nd #Fulltone OCD and #DMB Foxy pi-rate. hate to choose amongst my many delays/reverbs.
DosEXmachina29 @effectsbay, big muff
jdstalnaker @effectsbay ts9
senorpuma @effectsbay believe it or not, my Ibanez SuperMetal – I have it dialed in to a very subtle darkness that I love #favoritepedal

Comments from the original post:

Nick my BYOC tri-boost, adds some very nice crunch with very little compression…
Michael Burgess I think I would have to have my Q-balls bass envelope. Bass is just bass without a filter. I need the funk.
Lee I’m going to assume multi effects pedals are out of the question? If so, easy answer for me – Boss FL2 flanger. I can get any range of chorus-ey, tremelo-ey, semi-phaser-ey (and of course flanger-ey) sound I need. If I want crunch, I can just push the amp harder. (I hope we’re not on a desert island.)
Jon Patton My Malekko 616. Hard for me to live without an orange squeezer and volume pedal, but it’s awfully hard to fake delay.
Gary Vogel Cannot live without delay, and the best is my TimeFactor by Eventide. I love dirt, but I get is from my VHT or EVHII amps just fine.
Chris Barrus My Moogerfooger analog delay. I can pretty much get what I want with the right guitar/amp combo, but like the commenter above said – it’s awfully hard to fake delay.
Mike Definitely my Dwarfcraft Eau Claire Thunder, it’s the base of my tone. Plus it’s versatile enough and I love the feedback loop.
Skattabrain Blackout Effectors Twosome Fuzz… you can get usable fuzz, distortion and even a clean boost from it.

Demo of the T-Rex Tonebug Booster

Demo of the T-Rex Tonebug BoosterI’m currently running a give away to win this particular pedal – T-Rex Tonebug Booster. For those of you that are interested in the T-Rex Tonebug Booster, we put a quick demo of what this guy does. I like clean boosts. They’re simple and designed pretty much to do one thing – increase your guitar input signal to the pre-amp or to pedals. This can be especially great if you’re playing through a tube amp to get some nice natural amp break up. Normally clean boosts have just a single knob to manage the input gain, but the T-Rex Tonebug Booster also has a mid-scoop control to help contour the mid-range, which can be useful.

Here is what T-Rex has to say about their T-Rex Tonebug Booster:

You know the problem… When it’s time for you launch into another brilliant solo, how do you make yourself heard above the rest of the band?

Basically, you’ve got to turn up the volume, but that’s easier said than done. You can keep the volume knob on your guitar down when you’re playing rhythm and turn it up for leads – but that takes half the tone and all the shine out of your rhythm sound.

Or you can turn around and crank up your amp in the middle of the song – missing bars, losing your audience and – let’s face it – usually forgetting to turn it down again when your solo is over.

Introducing T-Rex Booster
Booster is the perfect solution when you want to turn your volume up or down on the fly – without losing your tone. The way it works couldn’t be simpler: You set the right volume for your solos compared to rhythm parts, and then you stomp on the box when you take a solo.

Added SCOOP control
Sometimes, tweaking your equalization can also help you rise above the rest of the band. That’s why Booster comes with a cool SCOOP knob, which lets you fine-tune your solo tone in addition to boosting your volume.

Part of the T-Rex Tonebug series
Booster is part of the T-Rex Tonebug series, a growing line of pedals that combines the classic T-Rex tone found in our high-end pedals with intuitive, uncomplicated controls – all at a price that any guitarist can afford.

Once you’ve give Booster a try, you’ll wonder why you waited so long to add one to your pedal board.

For this demo, I again asked Jimmy Rolle to help out. He’s playing his Les Paul Custom Shop Elegant into a Rivera Knucklehead 100w head through a Marshall 4×12 cabinet. The audio was recorded with a Shure SM57 and Fathead Ribbon Mic. There is nothing between the guitar and the amp besides this pedal.

You can listen to the high quality MP3 clip via SoundCloud

Now, if you’re liking what you’re hearing, and as I mentioned, I’m giving this pedal away! I’ll be accepting entries for a few more days, so be sure to get your entry in before it’s too late! You can find full details about the T-Rex Tonebug Booster Give Away here.

T-Rex Tonebug Booster Give Away

T-Rex Tonebug Booster Give Away

GIVE AWAY IS CLOSED

I know I said I was going to announce a give away yesterday. I lied. Today is the day. The guys at T-Rex sent over a few pedals to be demo’d, and I thought it would be great to give them away. T-Rex is an amazing company making some very popular pedals. Their Tonebug line is a more compact pedal footprint, and is meant to keep costs down for the musicians while not compromising on tone, etc.

For this give away, it’s the T-Rex Booster. The booster is a simple signal booster, but with a mid control, which is nice. Basically, the pedal has two controls – Boost and Scoop. Boost is your level control, and the Scoop is your mid control. The idea of the booster is to increase your input signal to the preamp of your amp or it can be used raise the signal to your pedals. I’ll be posting a demo and high quality MP3 clip in the next few days.

So how do you enter to win the T-Rex Tonebug Booster?  I’m going to select one random entry.

The submission form will be open until August 12th (Friday) 12PM MST.

First, this is not a requirement, but you should ‘like’ EffectsBay on Facebook. It’s good way to keep in touch with new give aways and posts. Also, please consider joining the official EffectsBay.com mailing list.

So the question is…. “If money was no object, what NEW pedal would you want to buy?

T-Rex Effects & Guitar Center Announce New Exclusive Pedals

T-Rex Effects & Guitar Center Announce New Exclusive PedalsI just received an email from T-Rex Effects announcing a new pedal that will be exclusively available at Guitar Center on August 1st, 2011 called the Yellow Drive. Below is the official press release:

August 1st, 2011 – T-Rex Engineering, the Danish guitar effects pedal manufacturer, in partnership with Guitar Center’s Director of Merchandise, Barry Mitchell, has developed a new line of pedals which will be available exclusively at Guitar Center stores and online at www.guitarcenter.com. The four exclusive pedals will be introduced in Q3 2011, beginning with the Yellow Drive distortion pedal in August.

“This partnership with Guitar Center is a very exciting opportunity for T-Rex and reinforces our position as a key brand in the global pedal market,” says John Kelley, GM of Musiquip (the brand’s American distributor). “We’re thrilled that GC has identified the demand that exists for T-Rex effects in the USA, and has in turn made the brand a key component of their pedal mix. Barry’s visit to T-Rex headquarters in Denmark was an instrumental part of the product development process. We are confident that the association of these two best-in-class brands will be a success for both Guitar Center and T-Rex.”

Yellow Drive
Yellow Drive (Retail: $159) will be featured in Guitar Center’s August buyer’s guide.  The Yellow Drive features two channels of killer vintage gain. You can seamlessly switch between a clean rhythm sound from your amp, a smooth and subtle overdrive from channel A for epic ballads, and a thick warm distortion from channel B for killer leads. The player can fine-tune the sound of each channel with independent GAIN, TONE, and LEVEL controls. One pedal, two channels…endless possibilities.
