Electro-Harmonix Analogizer and Deluxe Memory Man 550-TT at NAMM

Electro-Harmonix Analogizer and Deluxe Memory Man 550-TT at NAMMHere is a video by Premiere Guitar where the Electro-Harmonix booth at NAMM 2012 showed off their Analogizer and Deluxe Memory Man 550-TT. I’ve been very interested in the Analogizer and wanted to hear more about it. It seems like a great little box to ‘darken’ up the signal, especially on trailing delays, etc. I thought it was cool that it was a signal boost as well (similar to LPB1 – Linear Power Boost) giving it up to 26dB of signal gain.

I have a T-Rex Replica delay and I like how you can set it to be ‘dark’. I also have a Boss DD-3 which is very digital and a pedal like this could come in handy for a DD-3 or DD-7 to generate more of an analog feel.

The Deluxe Memory Man is similar to the standard Deluxe Memory Man with tap tempo, but has shorter maximum delay (550ms) since those chips are easier to come by. I particularly liked the demo with the POG2 in the effects loop of the pedal to only affect the wet signal with the POG. Very cool.

Here is the video:

I found a good ‘bundle’ deal on the Electro-Harmonix Analogizer for $104.85 at Amazon, but you get 2 free Strukture 6″ patch cables and 2 free Strukture 18.6′ instrument cables. Not a bad deal!

2012 Klon at NAMM

2012 Klon at NAMMToday I saw Caroline Guitar Company post a photo of the new Klon Overdrive at NAMM 2012. The Klon Centaur has reached mythical proportions (in desire and in price) over the last years. You definitely can spend up to $1500+ for original ‘gold’ Klon, etc. Last year, there has been talk about Bill Finnegan getting back into building Klons again, and there was a overdrive shootout video I posted a while back that had the new Klon (but in a card board box – weird right?). So, for 2012, there has been a lot of people interested in the new Klon. At NAMM, Bill Finnegan was there with his prototype Klon and here is the only video I found so far.

Video posted by natesousa:

Personally, I had a hard time hearing the pedal in this video, and hoping there will be more videos coming out…

TC Electronic PolyTune Mini – Tuning Distilled

TC Electronic PolyTune Mini - Tuning Distilled More talk about the TC Electronic PolyTune Mini pedal. They’ll be showing this off at NAMM today. No word on release date or price yet on this guy. I’m sure it’ll be a very hot item for 2012! They mentioned that this includes the Drop-D tuning upgrade as well (not sure if they released that update for their standard pedal). The bummer, just like anything, is buying something cool and then finding out a short time later, there is a better version. Just like computers, TVs, etc. Sucks, but that’s life. I know a lot of people picked up the current version of the PolyTune and are now bummed that they should have waited for the mini.

TC Electronics Polytune Tuner – Shrinks!

TC Electronics Polytune Tuner - Shrinks!Winter NAMM starts tomorrow. Wish I could be there. Next year, I promise, I’ll be there! Just like every NAMM, there are always exciting new products to look forward to, especially when it comes to guitar/bass effects. I’ve been hearing some whispers about a super small version of the TC Electronic Polytune Tuner. The Polytune already has a great small profile, so this is interesting.

Here are two ‘preview’ NAMM videos for TC Electronic on this subject:

New VHT V-Drive Overdrive

New VHT V-Drive OverdriveAt Winter NAMM 2011, VHT debuted their VHT V-Drive Overdrive pedal. This is a highly customizable overdrive.  The overdrive has a ‘select’ control which allows you to switch between 10 different diode configurations and allows for a 11th option which is a straight OpAmp boost (Clean Boost). Additionally there is Texture, Depth, Tone and Voltage controls.

This pedal will be available for purchase next month (9/7/2011) and might be a great overdrive for your board.

Here is the official description of the VHT V-Drive Overdrive:

From clean boost to creamy-smooth sustain to raging harmonic complexity, the new VHT V-Drive overdrive pedal’s unique controls offer an amazingly wide range of tones and textures at an awesome value. In addition to standard Drive and Volume controls, the VHT V-Drive offers four more unique controls.

Select
The V-Drive’s 11-position Select switch provides ten different clipping diode configurations plus a clean-boost diode-bypass mode. (Clipping diodes are the heart and soul of nearly every classic overdrive pedal design, and the type and configuration of these diodes defines the overdrive texture and dynamic response character.)

The V-Drive’s Select switch replicates the diode type and configuration of the most popular overdrive pedals of the ’80s and ’90s as well as some of today’s most sought-after boutique designs. The V-Drive also offers several new diode types and configurations for some fresh tones for the future, enabling players to make their own unique contributions to the advancement of the art of overdrive.

Texture
The V-Drive’s Texture control adjusts the overdrive texture and harmonic content. Working in conjunction with the Select switch, these two controls provide an unprecedented range of fine-tunable overdrive choices. Warm and smooth or bristling with harmonic activity, the choice—and voice—is yours.

Depth
The V-Drive’s unique 11-position Depth control fine-tunes the low-end response to perfectly voice the overdrive depth to suit a wide range of guitars, pickups, and musical styles.

Tone
The V-Drive’s Tone knob is voiced higher than is commonly expected. Unlike most overdrive pedals, it adjusts the treble content without altering the midrange. The V-Drive’s Tone control works in conjunction with the Depth control to provide a wider and more useful EQ-shaping range than conventional overdrive tone controls.

Voltage
The unique Voltage control uses a special voltage multiplying integrated circuit to increase the pedal’s operating voltage for a tighter, punchier, crisper, quicker-responding and more authoritative tone—ordinary 9-volt pedals can’t match this new level of dynamic response. The Voltage control can also reduce the V-Drive’s operating voltage to as low as 5 volts for a softer and spongier attack.

Like a box full of pedals in one, the innovative, revolutionary—and surprisingly affordable—VHT V-Drive introduces the next chapter in the quest for the ultimate overdrive.
Features

* Wide range of tones and textures
* Volume, Tone, Drive, Depth, Texture, Select controls
* Select control offers 11 settings that replicate the most popular overdrives of the ’80s, ’90s, and beyond
* Voltage control adjusts the operating voltage for tighter sound

Here is a video by premierguitar at NAMM where VHT talks about VHT Amps Special 6 Ultra Head and the VHT V-Drive Overdrive. I skipped the amp part. His guitar is out of tune, but you’ll get a good sense of what this pedal is all about.

As I mentioned above, the VHT V-Drive Overdrive  is available 9/7/2011. You can pre-order this pedal via Amazon.com for $99.00

NAMM ’11 – Electro-Harmonix Neo Mistress,Killswitch & Talking Machine Demos

Electro-Harmonix Demos at Winter NAMM 2011I just saw this cool video by Premier Guitar Magazine where they interview Larry from Electro-Harmonix at Winter Namm ’11. Larry goes into some of the new upcoming pedals from Electro-Harmonix which includes the EHX Neo Mistress, EHX Killswitch, EHX Deluxe Memory Man w/Tap Tempo and the EHX Stereo Talking Machine. Some nice stuff.

EHX Neo Mistress is a true bypass flanger in a nano enclosure. Controls include feedback and rate, with a LED rate indicator.

EHX Killswitch is a momentary line selector. Clicking the switch will bring in a effects loop. You can punch in and punch out effects with this.. pretty interesting. The demo shows this pedal with a Doctor Q and uses a Freeze along side. I think “noise” guys.. will probably go ape shit for this thing.

EHX Deluxe Memory Man w/Tap Tempo – what can I say.. it’s a EHX Deluxe Memory Man.. with tap tempo.

EHX Talking Machine – A Vocal Formant Filter. Okay.. what does “Formant” mean? No worries – here is the definition: A band of frequencies, in a sound spectrum, that have a greater intensity; they determine the quality of a sound; especially the characteristic sounds of the consonants. So apparently this can mimic some vowel sounds. Hearing the demo, it immediately reminded me of Mogwai and the vocoder (I think that is what they use?).

New pedals by Electro-Harmonix

One of these years, I need to make it to NAMM. I would so dig it. Electro-Harmonix just unveiled a few new pedals for 2011.

EHX Killswitch

The KILLSWITCH Momentary Line Selector is a new, utilitarian Electro-Harmonix pedal. In Kill Mode, the KILLSWITCH can be used to provide instant muting. It can also be used to create interesting stutter effects by turning the instrument’s signal abruptly on and off for hard rhythmic in/out transitions.

EHX Neo MistressEHX Neo Mistress

The new EHX NEO MISTRESS presents the lush flanging Electro-Harmonix is noted for. True to the classic Mistress, the Neo’s design adjusts the harmonic sweep to present the varied tonal density that flanging brings to musical performance.

EHX Deluxe Memory Man 2011EHX Deluxe Memory Man (upgraded)

EHX has now created the ultimate Deluxe Memory Man equipped with Tap Tempo, Expression Control and an Effects Loop. Adding Tap Tempo ensures that you will always be in sync with the groove, wherever your performance takes you.

EHX Stereo Talking MachineEHX Stereo Talking Machine

The programmable Stereo Talking Machine, Vocal Formant Filter, presents creative vowel shaping that is controlled by the player’s dynamics. Nine selectable Voices deliver vowel sounds such as AH-OO and OW-EE.

All of these pedals will be available for purchase in the Spring, with the exception of the EHX Killswitch, which will be out very soon.

Flea & Chad Jam at Winter NAMM 2010

Flea Bass Junior Bass Green & Pink PunkHere is a cool video of Flea and Chad from the Red Hot Chili Peppers jamming out at Winter NAMM 2010! I was curious what this was all about, so I did some digging and it appears to be a quick demo of Flea’s bass line (Flea Basses). The particular bass Flea is playing is a Flea Bass Junior Bass, which is damn affordable at $399.00. Side note, didn’t know Will Ferrel could rip on drums like that.. heh.

Premier Guitar – Source Audio Interview at Winter NAMM ’10

So.. Summer NAMM is getting ready.. and many friends/dealers/vendors are heading over. I’ve been asked by several people if EffectsBay.com will be there, and unfortunately, no. I think I’ll try to make a good effort for Winter ’11, but we’ll see.  Speaking of friends, I noticed that @gearalley tweeted about a Premier Guitar video showing a interview of another friend – Source Audio during the Winter ’10 NAMM. I thought this video was quite good on describing their SoundBlox Pro line.

Electro Harmonix Memory Toy, Memory Boy, Cathedral and 22 Cal

So, I’ve been noticing that the site has been getting a lot of hits from search engines related to my Electro Harmonix Memory Toy and Electro Harmonix Memory Boy posts. I wanted to find some better comparisons (especially up against the Electro Harmonix Memory Man), but I found this great video from the  Summer NAMM 2009 show at the Electro Harmonix booth.

It features a demo of the Memory Toy, Memory Boy, Cathedral and something really new to me, the 22 Caliber power amp (as a pedal).

Here are the pedals mentioned in the video:

Electro Harmonix Memory Toy $79.50 at Musician’s Friend
Electro Harmonix Memory Boy $98.18 at Musician’s Friend
Electro Harmonix Cathedral $214.50 at Musician’s Friend
Electro Harmonix 22 Caliber Power Amp $99.99 at Musician’s Friend
