MXR Custom Shop CSP105 Vintage ’75 Phase 45 Phaser

MXR Custom Shop CSP105 Vintage '75 Phase 45 Phaser Guitar Effects PedalI’ve been getting a few questions about the MXR Phase 45 (MXR Custom Shop CSP105 Vintage ’75 Phase 45 Phaser), so I definitely been wanting to bring this up. I’ve also been seeing this thing on a few pedal boards out there. Basically, it’s the little brother of the Phase 90 built in the 70s. It has been reintroduced (in the Custom Shop) and is built to exact specs.  No LED, No power adapter, Matched FETs and all hand wired.

Here is the official description:

The MXR CSP105 Vintage ’75 Phase 45 pedal reissues the rare little brother of the Phase 90 to exacting specifications. With 2 stages of phasing, the Phase 45 guitar pedal offers up its subtle and musical voice via hand-matched FETs and a hand-wired circuit board.

The MXR Phase 45 phaser pedal is equipped with a bypass footswitch and a speed knob. Rotating the speed knob in a clockwise motion results in a faster phase effect, and turning it counterclockwise slows it down. The MXR phaser pedal is powered by a single 9V battery, accessed by removing the stompbox’s bottom plate. Texture your tone without overpowering your sound with the limited-edition Vintage ’75 Phase 45 phaser pedal.

MXR Custom Shop CSP105 Vintage ’75 Phase 45 Phaser Guitar Effects Pedal Features:

* Bypass footswitch
* Speed knob
* Hand-wired circuit board built with original-spec 1975 components
* Original high-quality Switchcraft Input/Output jacks and Carling bypass switch
* Hand-selected FETs, matched to produce deep and rich phasing
* All-analog circuitry for warm analog tone

Experimental Tribute (Boss pedals and synths)

Experimental Tribute (Boss pedals and synths)I found this pretty interesting video from over a year ago. This video has Chris Carter creating ambient sounds using a bucket of Boss pedals and a BC, Gakken and BugBrand synths. No guitars in the mix, just synth signal.

Here is what Chris said about the video:

This is a brief tribute I made to the experimental work of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop who recently staged a performance in London, that I couldn’t attend. All the sounds and loops originate from the BC8 synth, the Gakken SX-150 synth and the BugBrand Weevil synths. All the effects and processing is done with the Boss pedals. Oh yeah… and I did the whole thing ‘upside down’.

Pedal Line Friday – 10/29 – Jon Rundle

Today’s pedal line is from Jon Rundle. If you have a pedal line (doesn’t have to be in a board) for your rig, please email me a photo, bio, description of pedals and routing to pedallineateffectsbaydotcom. Every Friday I’ll showcase a pedal line submission. Make sure you include any links to your band or music page.

Pedal Line Friday - 10/29 - Jon Rundle

Here is my submission for pedal line friday.

Pedals:
- Electro Harmonix Switch Blade – Used for switching between my 2 guitars
- Ernie Ball Volume Pedal – Used for swells and muting my signal
- Fender Tuner – Comes out of the tuner out on the volume pedal and is used for tuning
- 5 channel Road Rage bypass strip – Runs almost all of my pedals into separate channels for easy access from the bottom row and better tone
- Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive (1st Channel) – 1st stage overdrive, gain almost at 0 for just a light amount of overdrive
- Fulltone Fulldrive 2 (2nd Channel) – 2nd stage overdrive, gain not too high, stacked on top of sparkle drive for more gain or use the boost on it
- Electro Harmonix Linear Boost LPB-1 (3rd Channel) – Basic clean boost
- Boss DD-5 (4th Channel) – Basic quarter delay, tap tempo out goes to Road Rage tap tempo
- Line 6 M9 (5th Channel) – Mostly just use delays on it, .8 analog is my fav and also love using the octo reverb from it
- Boss RV-5 – Last pedal before amp, always on, modulate setting for a nice ambient effect

Guitars:
- Fender Highway One Tele
- Gretsch Pro Jet with TV Jones Classic Pickups

Amp:
- Vox AC15 with Celestion Blue

Band:
- Chasing After (http://www.chasingafter.com)

Thanks!

Jon Rundle

Free Shirt Wednesday – 10/27 – TONEbUTCHeR

Free Shirt Wednesday - 10/27 - Tone Butcher

Today’s Free Shirt Wednesday is Tone Butcher (or TONEbUTCHeR). Here we have a guy building hand wired pedals and doing custom modifications from Costa Mesa, CA. Currently he is offering five primary effect models (Bronx Cheer, Octave Puss, Grass Choppa, Blood Brother and Blue Wail), but checking out his ETSY store, you see a few other crazy devices.

Tone Butcher does not only cater to the guitarist or bassist with their effects but any audio signal generating device. His demos showcase his effects with various sound making devices from loop machines, keyboards, etc. There are some interesting textures that can be created with these pedals.

His enclosures are also interesting. 9V battery mount on the outside of the enclosure. He uses a molded enclosure to give a unique shape.

Below is a video of the Bronx Cheer:

Check out Tone Butcher at their website, on Facebook, on YouTube and on Blogger.

EBS MultiComp True Dual Band Compressor

EBS MultiComp True Dual Band Compressor PedalI’ve been hearing a lot of good things about the EBS MultiComp compressor, so I thought I would bring it up today. Again, this was mentioned on last Friday’s Pedal Line Friday. Apparently bass players have been going nuts about this. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find great videos on it.. but I did find a few.

Here is the official description:

The EBS MultiComp is a high-performance, true dual-band analog compressor pedal. It gives discerning bassists a choice between rack-quality solid state, tube simulation, and multi-band compression modes in a stage-ready pedal format. It has a compression level knob, gain level knob, and an active/passive signal switch.

EBS bass effect pedals are designed to preserve the entire frequency range of your bass signal, use noiseless FET switching, are suitable both for studio and live use, feature robust construction, and are easy to use.

EBS MultiComp True Dual Band Compressor Pedal Features:

* Analog compression for bass guitar
* Solid state, tube simulation, and multiband modes
* Compress/Limiter level control knob
* Gain control knob
* Active/passive bass signal switch
* Preserves entire frequency range of signal
* Noiseless switching
* Rugged construction

I found this glowing recommendation (but not a review) by Jeff Pevar (video by EBSSweden):

I also found this interesting video where the reviewer is playing the EBS MultiComp, but punching in a BBE Sonic Stomp. I wish there was a moment when everything was bypassed to see how the EBS MultiComp affected the signal. Video is by entropman.

You can pickup a EBS MultiComp True Dual Band Compressor for $199.99 at Musician’s Friend.

Tech 21 SansAmp 3-Channel Programmable Bass Driver DI

Tech 21 SansAmp 3-Channel Programmable Bass Driver DIFridays’ Pedal Line Friday mentioned a Tech 21 SansAmp 3-Channel Programmable Bass Driver DI. Programmable DI? This seems pretty interesting, so I had to look further. All the bass players I’ve played with (with the exception of one) dreaded the DI set up, which I can understand, but I’m wondering if something like this would make things a lot better.

Here is the official description:

The Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI is a 3-channel, programmable rig-in-a-box similar to the TRI-A.C. for guitar, but made for bassists. The all-analog circuitry features drive, bass, treble, presence, blend, and level controls. Digital only in its programmability, you just tweak the knobs until you find a tone, double-tap on a footswitch, and it’s saved in that channel. Works great on stage or in the studio. Rugged all-metal construction. Operates via a 9V alkaline battery, phantom power, or the optional Tech 21 DC2 power supply. 7.25″L x 5″W x 2″H. 25 oz.

I found this video by elninodelamuerte where he demos some of the settings.

You can pick up the Tech 21 SansAmp 3-Channel Programmable Bass Driver DI for $209.00 at Musician’s Friend.

Today’s pedal line is from Joe Ward. Every Friday I’ll showcase a pedal line submission. Make sure you include any links to your band or music page.Pedal Line Friday - 10/22 - Joe Ward

I’m a bassist and this is my current pedal board. I’ve got Digitech Whammy (I use it mainly for octave down + dry signal, but also 1 or 2 octaves up to double up guitar lines as well as some Tool inspired lines), Electro Harmonix Q Tron Plus (awesome for Bootsy and Flea inspired funk lines!), EBS Multi Comp (the best compressor I’ve ever used, helps level out everything especially if I’m playing slap stuff yet amazingly transparent sounding), MXR Phase 90 (classic tone and easy to set), Boss DD7 (I use this for looping, reverse, analog and digital delay sounds) and Tech 21 Sansamp Programmable Bass Driver D.I. (an amazing bit of kit for going either into an amp or PA or both, as well as one of the best bass overdrives money can buy!).

I’m in Funk/Rock band Other Left from Nottingham England.

MXR M159 Stereo Tremolo

MXR M159 Stereo Tremolo Guitar Effects PedalAfter working on my tremolo project for a friend, I thought I would take a closer look at other trems out there. I wouldn’t mind making a few adjustments or work on another similar project, so it’s fun to see what’s possible. For today’s ‘research’ I thought I ‘d look at the MXR M159 Stereo Tremolo.

Here is the official description:

With its warm analog circuitry and lush tremolo sound, the Dunlop TS-1 set the standard for tremolo pedals for over a decade. The MXR M159 Tremolo Pedal keeps all the effects and controls of the original-but in a smaller, pedalboard-friendly size. Its 18-volt operation provides rich and vibrant sound with low noise due to its high headroom. With the versatile input/output options the M159 guitar pedal can produce hypnotic, pulsing mono tremolo through a single amp or ping-ponged from one amp to another in stereo mode for a huge, spacious tone.

Of course I found a great video by jimdunlopusa. They usually have great descriptive demos of their pedals.

You can pick up the MXR M159 Stereo Tremolo for $169.99 at Musician’s Friend.
