Troy Van Leeuwen – Queens of the Stone Age – Pedal Line

Last week I got an email from Ryan Rukavina of Rukavina Guitars letting me know about a cool video by tcelectronic. This video features Eric Baech, guitar tech of Troy Van Leeuwen (Queens of the Stone Age), and he goes over Troy’s set up. This includes his main pedal board, rack/amps and guitars.

I broke down, into detail, what was seen (since Eric doesn’t go into detail of each pedal). I have everything worked out pretty well except for two unknown pedals. They’re listed below, so if you can help shed some light, please comment below and I’ll get the  list updated.

Here is the video by tcelectronic:

Below are screen snaps of the video with a break down of pedals.

Taylor Barefoot Demo’ing Dunlop, MXR and Way Huge pedals

Today, I’m going to feature another great video by David Fisher and Taylor Barefoot. If you’re not subscribed to their channel (Tibbon), you really should, they have great demo videos. You can easily subscribe by clicking here.

Looks like they received a box full of Dunlop pedals (MXR, WayHuge, etc) and are demoing these pedals by genres of music. I thought this was a cool way of going about it, showing pedals in combination. They broke down the genres in the following groups: Rock, Classic Rock, Country, Heavy and Bass. They also break down some of the similar pedals (ie: Script Phase 45, Script Phase 90 and Phase 90, etc). Very nice to see.

Here is the following video by Tibbon. It’s a long one, so get yourself cup of coffee out.. or beer (depending on your timezone or situation) and relax:

Updated pedal boards of John Cummings and Stuart Braithwaite of Mogwai

Okay. I guess I’m in a Mogwai sort of mood today. I just posted Dominic’s board, and on Facebook, Michael pointed out a great video by Music Radar where they go into Mogwai’s full rig. The best part.. it’s recent. Post was posted on Mar 3,2011. You can read the full post and see the videos here.

From my earlier posts of John’s and Stuart’s rig, it looks like there have been significant changes to the boards, so this is a great opportunity to make some updates.

John Cummings’ Pedal Board:

John Cummings Pedal BoardBoss TU-3
MXR Kerry King 10 band EQ
Way Huge Pork Loin
Way Huge Swollen Pickle
Death By Audio Fuzz Gun
Death By Audio Intersteller Overdrive Deluxe
Boss OS-2 Overdrive
MXR Script Phase 90 (Custom Shop)
MXR Carbon Copy Delay
Boss DD-7 Delay
Dunlop M159 Tremolo
Way Huge Aqua Puss Delay
Boss BF-3 Flanger
Way Huge Fat Sandwich
Electro-Harmonix Holy Stain
Boss LS-2 Line Selector
Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2+ x2

John’s board had definitely changed from the earlier post. Removing the T-Rex Dr. Swamp and the new additions of Way Huge pedals is interesting. It’s also interesting to see he’s riding with Death By Audio pedals as well now for his distortion section. In the earlier post, he was using the EHX HOG with footswitch controller and expression pedal, and it’s not on this tour.

Stuart Braithwaite’s Pedal Board:

Stuart Braithwaite Pedal BoardBoss TU-3
Danelectro Fab Tone
Pro Co Rat2
MXR Carbon Copy
Electro-Harmonix NYC Big Muff
Boss DD-20 Giga delay
Boss SL-20 Slicer
Electro-Harmonix Vocoder V256
MXR Micro Flanger
Kerry King KFK Q Zone
Boss RV-5 Reverb
Boss TR-2 Tremolo
Boss RC-20XL Loop Station
Vox Wah
Boss RE-20 Space Echo
Boss LS-2 Line Selector
Behringer MicroHD HD400 Hum Destroyer
Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2+ x2

Interesting to see the inclusion of more Boss twin pedals from the previous post. Definitely ProCo Rat2 and Danelectro Fab Tone is big part of his distortion tone

Way Huge Angry Troll WHE101 – Nice Bundle Deal at Amazon

Way Huge Angry Troll WHE101 - Nice Bundle Deal at AmazonI just came across a nice bundle deal at Amazon for the Way Huge Angry Troll WHE101.  Right now, you can pick this bundle up for $119.99, which includes 2 FREE Struckture 6″ patch cables and 2 FREE Structure 18.6′ instrument cables. Normally, this pedal sells for $119.99, so this is a nice opportunity to pick up some cables up for FREE.

For those of you not familiar with the Angry Troll, we did a review on this pedal a little while back. You can read about it and watch/listen to the demo here – Review of the Way Huge Angry Troll Linear Boost

Here is the official description of the Way Huge Angry Troll Linear Boost:

The mighty Angry Troll boost pedal serves up monstrous portions of volume and gain to pummel the input of your amp. It adds bite and punch while transforming your anemic and mild mannered tone into a beastly sonic onslaught. The Angry Troll boost pedal’s two controls interact like a vintage mic preamp. The Anger knob-a rotary switch with six Fists of Fury positions-adjusts the amount of gain created by the Angry Troll effect pedal’s op-amp, while the Volume knob regulates the overall output level. The guitar pedal’s high-grade components are used for a precisely tuned circuit that works like an extension of your amp.

The Way Huge Angry Troll effect pedal can be powered by a single 9V battery or with a Dunlop ECB003 external DC power supply (not included). The power input is a 5.5mm x 2.1mm jack with the positive voltage on the outer sleeve. The Way Huge boost pedal will lock into bypass mode when it is time to change the battery. It also includes power protection circuitry to prevent damage from AC power supplies.

Again, you can pick up the Way Huge Angry Troll bundle (includes 2 patch cables and 2 instrument cables) for $119.99 at Amazon.com. At the time of this posting there were only a few left, so if this sounds good, you’ll need to jump on it.

Way Huge Electronics Fat Sandwich Harmonic Saturator Distortion

Way Huge Electronics WHE301 Fat Sandwich Harmonic Saturator Distortion Guitar Effects PedalToday’s wanderings led me to a Way Huge Electronics pedal.. the Fat Sandwich. I’ve been sort of looking around for fuzz pedals and maybe something in the distortion box genre, and the “harmonic saturator”  caught my eye.

Here is the official description of this pedal:

The Fat Sandwich Distortion represents an advanced era in guitar pedal design for Way Huge. In addition to carrying on the Way Huge tradition of amazing tone and rugged construction, the Fat Sandwich Distortion Pedal delivers heaps of crunchy distortion goodness via its innovative multi-stage clipping circuit. Meticulously designed from the ground up, the passive tone stack was tuned to bring out the “sweet spot” with any guitar and amp combination. The Volume control produces tons of output, making it ideal for driving the headroom out of the most powerful tube amps. Additionally, the Fat Sandwich guitar effect pedal has two internal mini controls: the Curve knob lets the user fine-tune the corner frequency of the overdrive filtering and the Sustain control adjusts the gain of the final distortion stage. The Fat Sandwich is versatile and over the top — the consummate distortion pedal for any genre of playing style.

Review of the Way Huge Angry Troll Linear Boost

Way Huge Electronics WHE101 Angry Troll Boost Guitar Effects Pedal RedToday I wanted to talk about the Way Huge Angry Troll linear boost pedal. The folks at Dunlop were kind enough to send me this pedal to demo… so we did. Again, for this demo, I enlisted the help of my good friend Jimmy Rolle. He used his Les Paul Custom Shop Elegant, plugged into a Rivera Knucklehead 100 through a Marshall 4×12 cab (2 V30s, 1 G12H30, 1 Greenback). We mic’d it with a AKG Solidtube microphone direct to a laptop.

The Angry Troll boost pedal can give you a maximum of +50db of gain! There are 2 knobs – Volume and Anger. The anger knob which is a rotary switch with fists (I have to admit, I think that’s pretty cool) adjusts the level of gain through the op-amp. The volume knob regulates the overall pedal output. I have to note, that this is not a ‘clean boost’ since it does alter the sound with some compression for “bite and punch” as their description states.

I also have a high quality MP3 download available via SoundCloud:

You can pick up the Way Huge Electronics WHE101 Angry Troll for $119.99 at Musician’s Friend. But wait, you have a chance to get the exact pedal we demo’d! If you’re not aware, this month’s give away is this pedal. Click here to learn more about the Way Huge Electronics Angry Troll give away!

Way Huge Angry Troll Give Away on EffectsBay

CONTEST IS CLOSED

A little while ago, Dunlop USA sent over a Way Huge Angry Troll for us to do a demo/review. We shot the review, and I’ll be posting it soon, but the good news for you, is that I’m giving away this pedal!

Way Huge is a well known name in the world of guitar effects – from the Swollen Pickle to the Aqua Puss, etc, Dunlop has done a great job reviving this legendary line of pedals. Dunlop is also develops their own line (Crybaby, etc) and also has the great MXR line of pedals.

This give away is featuring the Way Huge Angry Troll linear boost amplifier. Here is the official description of this pedal:

The mighty Angry Troll serves up gorgeous portions of volume and gain to pummel the input of your amp. It adds bite and punch while transforming your anemic and mild mannered tone into a beastly sonic onslaught!

The Angry Troll’s two controls interact like a vintage mic pre amp. The Anger knob—a rotary switch with six Fists of Fury positions—adjusts the amount of gain created by the Troll’s op-amp, while the Volume knob regulates the overall output level. High grade components are used for a precisely tuned circuit that works like an extension of your amp.

Please take a moment and check out Dunlop’s site. They have a great blog, and I absolutely love watching DunlopTV. Great stuff!

Mike Campbell of the Heartbreakers Interview (DunlopTV)

This is another great interview on DunlopTV featuring Mike Campbell, the guitarist from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Couple of interesting items in this interview.. particularly his cool guitars, minimal/small amp set up, and the use of pedals in line on stage. I also took a screen snap of Mike Campbell’s pedalboard and tried to identify all the pedals there. Besides what looks to be a true bypass switch, there is a unidentified ‘Reverse’ pedal there.

But first, here is the video by DunlopTV:

Here is a shot of Mike Campbell’s pedalboard:
