Top 10 Best Selling Delay Pedals

Top 10 Best Selling Delay PedalsThis morning I wanted to do some research on the top best selling delay pedals. For this I thought I would pick three merchants that sell delay pedals and sort by Best Selling to get a list. I was confident that I would see some of the basic names, but I was surprised by some of the results. For each merchant I took their Top 10 Best Selling Delay Pedals and listed them below. I want to stress that these are the top *best selling* not necessarily the top *best* delays. Some of these are probably best selling due to price vs. tone and capability. Either way it’s interesting to see what people are buying.

I was expecting to see the Boss DD-3 and DD-7 to be in the lists, but I was surprised to not see Electro-Harmonix all over these lists. Likewise, I was surprised to see the Fulltone tape delay in there. Additionally, some of the other pedals (DeltaLab, Behringer and Rogeu) might need a closer look, since they are in these lists. I would say the MXR Carbon Copy is clearly the winner for best selling delay. Why don’t I own one???? Hmmm, I better get on it.

Let me know what you think of these lists!

Bryce Dessner – The National – Pedalboard

Bryce Dessner - The NationalA while back I posted “Any guitarists out there that you’d like to see on EffectsBay with their board broken down?”. There were some great artists listed there, and I’ve been slowly chipping away at this list. Jay Wallsten suggested The National. I personally really dig The National. I get suckered in with baritone vocals.. every time. I have a few albums.. Boxer, Alligator and High Violet.. and dig all of them. I didn’t know much about the gear or the musicians, so this I felt was a great opportunity to learn more about a band I already like. This breakdown will focus on Bryce Dessner the primary guitarist of The National.

I found various pieces of information spanning from 2006 to 2010. Overall, his pedal gear has remained somewhat consistent. I came across this nice article from Guitar Player Magazine article that was originally published in 2006. In this article, he mentions his line up to be the following:

Pro Co Rat -> Klon Centaur (Gold) -> DigiTech Whammy -> Boss DD-5 ->  Boss FV-50H Volume Pedal -> Line 6 DL4 Delay

In 2009 in a Harmony Central thread, there is a photo which shows an additional Delay  (EHX Memory Man) and the Whammy fell off the line:

Boss TU-2 -> Boss DD-5 -> Pro Co Rat -> Klon Centaur (Gold) -> Electro-Harmonix Memory Man (Deluxe Echo/Chorus/Vibrato)-> Line 6 DL4 Delay -> Boss FV-50H Volume Pedal

Finally, I found a photo from May 2010 where you can see the addition of a Electro-Harmonix Micro POG and a Earnie Ball Volume Pedal JR (replacing the Boss VF-50H).

Interview with Trace Foster – Guitar Tech for Joe Perry (DunlopTV)

Today I stumbled onto a great video on DunlopTV. It’s an interview with Trace Foster, the guitar tech of Joe Perry. There are some great gear shots and discussions from backline to pedals to guitars.

Here is a shot of his pedal board (screen capture) of the video:

Joe Perry Pedalboard 08/14/2010

I was able to break down the board, but Trace skipped a few pedals including a couple I could not identify. The unidentified pedals are the narrow pedal between the Class A Boost and Klon, the pedal left of the Klon and the blue pedal above the G-Lab delay. *Update* Looks like we have them locked down. Thanks everyone!

Top row
Option 5 Destination Rotation
G-Lab Smooth Delay SD-1 (doesn’t mention it in the vid)
Line 6 DL4 Delay
G-Lab Dual Reverb DR-3
Line 6 MM4 Modulation

Electro-Harmonix POG Polyphonic Octave Generator (classic silver face)

Bottom row

Thanks for the help everyone!

Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2+ – Different Voltages

Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2 PlusI finally broke down and purchased a Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2+ for my board. I’ve been riding a PedalTrain 2 board for a while now and absolutely love it, but I was hating the mess I was dealing with regarding power. I have a mix of pedals that need different power requirements. Initially I had a Boss TU-2 tuner which powered all of my pedals (using a Visual Sound One Spot and daisychain), but after I started using the Line 6 DL 4 delay, that introduced a new power supply. A few months ago, I picked up the Creation Audio Labs Holy Fire (after we reviewed it) and that has a 48v power supply.. so now I have 3 to deal with. With their large cables and converters this was starting to be a major pain in the ass setting up my quick and easy PedalTrain board.

So, finally, I thought enough was enough and purchased a Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2+ (thanks Phil from Fat Tone Guitars!). I easily mounted the unit under the Pedal Train (absolutely great design there!). I wanted the Pedal Power 2+ because of the ability to power 2 Line 6 modeler pedals (just eliminated the DL4 power cable there). It also has the isolated 9v power (just eliminated the One Spot and the Daisy Chain). Unfortunately, nothing I can do about the Creation Audio Labs Holy Fire. 48v is a lot of power and the Pedal Power doesn’t have the ability, but was able to just plug in that power supply to the AC out of the unit. I tucked the Holy Fire cable underneath the Pedal Train and secured it with some zip ties and velcro, and I’m now set. Now, I only have to plug in the Pedal Power to the wall, and I’m good to go.

The Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2+ also has the ability to ‘sag’ power or with adapters you can combine outputs to make 18v for example. I know this affects how pedals sound. I found this interesting video where he demos a Fulltone OCD version 4 with <9v, 9v and 18v. The video is by PerFusionist80

You can pick up the Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2+ for $169.00 at Fat Tone Guitars! Oh.. and it’s FREE shipping!

Analog Man ARDX20 Dual Analog Delay

Analog Man ARDX20 Dual Analog Delay Effect PedalJust like fuzz pedals, I’ve been on a hunt for a different delay in my set up. I currently use the Line 6 DL 4, which is great, but for some reason, I have a hard time linking up with it. I think it comes down to simple ease of use or something. Presets are great and important, but I almost prefer straight knobbies or something. I don’t know. It’s a personal issue.. which I need to work on.

So far, my short list of delays is T-Rex Replica, Deluxe Memory Boy, MXR Carbon Copy.. and possibly the Analog Man ARDX20 Dual Analog Delay. I like the fact there are two bays of pots and two footswitches to control which delay mode you’re in.

Here is the official description:

The Analog Man ARDX20 Dual Analog Delay pedal is a hand-wired pedal with two selectable settings of delay time, feedback, AND delay level, not just delay time! Also has effects loop for modulation, and expression pedal jack for delay time.

Features
1. True bypass switching, the right side foot switch is effect ON/OFF.
2. Two sets of controls, not only delay time but also delay level and feedback YELLOW channel (upper 3 knobs) or RED channel (lower 3 knobs) are selected with the left foot switch.
3. Battery or normal 9V boss type power. Power jack in the center top.
4. Battery compartment on the bottom for quick and easy battery changes
5. Low power consumption, 15mA, so an alkaline battery should last about 30 hours of use.
6. Jacks are on the top of the pedal for efficient layout on pedalboards
7. Input jack on the right, unplug to disconnect battery
8. Output jack on the left

I found another gearmanndude video demo’ing the Analog Man ARDX20 Dual Analog Delay (minus the foot controller). It’s not the most exciting demo, but it shows what this pedal can do, and how the analog tone sounds.

You can pick up the Analog Man ARDX20 Dual Analog Delay for $265.00 at Fat Tone Guitars.
