VFE Pale Horse Winner – Mike Kabatt

In February, Mike Kabatt won the VFE Pale Horse Dynamic Overdrive give away. We were stoked to be able to test drive the VFE Pale Horse (Thanks much Peter), and it was great to give it away to a lucky winner. Here is a shot of Mike with his bonus prize – It Might Get Loud DVD. I had fun giving away something extra, might continue that tradition in the future.

It Might Get Loud on DVD

If you’ve been following this site early on, you know how much I loved the movie “It Might Get Loud“. I was fortunate enough to see it in a theatre (granted it was sort of a crappy theatre). I went to the movie by myself, and I was completely blown away by what I saw, heard and felt. I remember it stayed with me for a long time. This movie is suppose to be a “documentary about the electric guitar from the point of three significant rock musicians”. I would definitely disagree. Sure it was about guitars, but to me, it was really about showing passion. Passion to ‘create’, and the tool just happened to be a electric guitar. I thought it was interesting how they related to each other, I thought it was interesting how I related to them. Great movie.

Well, I wanted my wife to see the film so we rented the DVD the other night, and she was absolutely blown away as well. I also thought I enjoyed it even more the second time around. I think every guitarist on the planet should watch this movie.. it is quite inspirational. But if you’re a fan of documentaries this is great regardless of playing a instrument or not. Passion is infectious and inspirational.

The DVD also has some bonus features, and we watched a few of the deleted scenes, etc. But there is a great press conference where the producers, directors and the three musician’s get to answer some interesting questions and provide further insight to the film.

You can pick up the DVD at Amazon.com

The Edge and his guitar rig

Back in the day I was a U2 fan, not so much lately, but still really like and most importantly respect what they do. I remember when “Achtung Baby” came out I was blown away by the sounds the Edge was pulling out of his hat. I always liked what he did with delay, even though that’s coming from a different direction from where I’m going, but I love watching anybody take ownership of their particular style and dominating it.

Recently, and if you’ve been following me for a bit you already know this, I saw “It Might Get Loud” and that documentary really got me to look at the Edge again. I found this great little interview from September 2008 talking about his guitar rig and sounds. The videos are broken down into two separate parts.

My thoughts about “It Might Get Loud”

itmightgetloud

I was initially going to ‘rate’ or ‘review’ this movie, but frankly I want to go deeper than that. The movie is great. Everyone should have gone to see it, and if it plays in more cities and more theaters everyone should go see it.

After watching the movie, I had many things going through my head, and for days (I saw the movie on Saturday) I’ve been thinking about why that movie has got me thinking so much. I think one of the biggest points, is viewing this movie as musician. I’ve never seen a documentary about music or musician’s that show the ‘human’ side of ‘superstars’. I’ve never seen a documentary about musicians that shows simple creativity and drive to produce music. You normally see the ‘rock’, the ‘fame’, the glory, but not the simple drive to make some cool with a guitar… when you’re all by yourself. I was blown away by the different levels of passion of music. The desire to play an instrument. The desire to master their own voice with the guitar.

Also, coming from a musician’s point of view, I was really able to see why I’m not successful with a guitar. Sure, I love to play. I love music and playing with my band, but there was a inherent drive to be fully committed to the music. This is really hard for me to describe, and I’m sure some of you know what I’m talking about, while others don’t. I tried to explain this to my wife, and the example I used… if they were playing the world’s shittiest song, they would play that song with a rock star attitude and own that song. Doesn’t matter if they’re on stage or at a campfire with a crappy acoustic. I’m not sure if I have that drive or commitment. I also felt there was a level of honesty to be able to open one’s self up to a song or performance. Not sure if other guitarists out there are working on new tunes and suddenly get that self-conscious  feeling. “Is this song retarded?” “Is this riff weak?”. I feel when one gets to a certain level those insecurities fade away once you’ve determined your voice with the guitar and it becomes fluent.. but then again that leads to being stale.. crap, I’m going on a tangent now.

The musician that most surprised me was Jack White. His desire to play, and to play from the heart was easily visible. I thought it was so in your face, that it was fake, but then it started to settle in.. he truly loves music. I loved watching Jack and Jimmy Page play the records and be wrapped up in the songs that influenced them throughout the years. To me, this movie was about musicians, and their passion to play. But it was presented in a ‘real’ way. In a way that I could relate to the Edge, Jimmy Page and Jack White. I feel those things. I like those things, but it’s clear that they take it to the next level. That’s why I’m writing about this on my blog vs. playing in U2.

I tip my hat off to Davis Guggenheim for putting together a great film. I loved how he brought you to their roots, brought you to the stage of their successes and then finishes up with them together. I also enjoyed that they played each others songs. Jimmy Page learning a U2 song, and the Edge picking up a White Stripes tune. It breaks down to the ‘normal’ level. 3 chords and a dream and sitting around playing guitar. I absolutely loved that movie, but I think I almost enjoyed the analysis afterwards more. I can’t wait to pick this video up on DVD.

It Might Get Loud will be released on DVD (I highly recommend everyone that plays guitar to pick this up or at least watch it somewhere) on Dec 22, 2009. You can currently pre-order and lock the price at Amazon.

Roger Mayer Axis Fuzz Pedal

So I finally got to see “It Might Get Loud” lastnight. Amazing, amazing movie. I’ll have more thoughts about it in a upcoming post in the near future. In that movie though, Jimmy Page mentions Roger Mayer, and I thought I’d take the time to point out this badass fuzz pedal, the Axis Fuzz. I sort of forgot about these, but they are great.

Here is a partial description from Tunnel music:

The Axis Fuzz was developed in early 1967 to give an additional series of tone colours for Jimi. This guitar effect is named after it’s most famous use on the title track of the album “Axis Bold as Love”. It can also be heard extensively on the “Band of Gypsies” and various other post 1968 recordings by Jimi. Since it’s reissue it has become a firm favourite by guitarists who demand rich fill range quality fuzz tones with plenty of bottom end but that can also be used on chords and riffs. It cleans us very well from the guitar volume control and retains its large range of tone colours. The guitar does not loose identity and is truly a modern classic used by many leading performers today.

You can currently pick this pedal up at TunnelVisionMusic.com for $225.95.

I found this sweet YouTube video from Gearman (I like his demos) on the Roger Mayer Axis Fuzz.

I came across a sneak peak of the upcoming movie “It Might Get Loud” which will be premiering this Friday in Los Angeles and New York. This video snippet of Jack White was from the Blender Blog, and like the trailer.. is quite cool. I’m expecting this movie to be fantastic! If you’re a guitar nut or like music or musicians in general, this movie should hit the spot!
