Earthquaker Devices Dirt Transmitter Pedal

Earthquaker Devices Dirt Transmitter PedalWhile working on tomorrow’s demo/review post, I stumbled across Fat Tone’s video review of the Earthquaker Devices Dirt Transmitter pedal, so I thought I would mention this real quick like. Seems like a very interesting lo-fi style pedal that might be the thing you’re looking for! When I say lo-fi, I think I’m saying old-school retro fuzz, something about it.. is quite cool.

Here is the official description:

The EarthQuaker Devices Dirt Transmitter Pedal is designed for the fuzz pedal fan who wants it all. It features a dual transistor setup for the fuzz tone we all look for. Built with only the finest parts, the EarthQuaker Devices Dirt Transmitter Pedal is almost silent when in engaged and completely quiet when disengaged thanks for the true bypass switch.

The EarthQuaker Devices Dirt Transmitter Pedal has an unbelievable range of tones lurking within it’s industrial metal case. The key to the sound is the Bias control which controls the voltage being sent to the transistors. It allows the Dirt Transmitter to have a cool gated style fuzz when twisted counter clockwise and when turned back the other way the fuzz returns to normal. The transistors become properly biased at around 2 O’Clock. Add to that a Tone knob that is essentially a bass cut, and you begin to realize the power that is the EarthQuaker Devices Dirt Transmitter Pedal.

* True Bypass
* LED Indicator
* Standard Boss-Style 9 volt adapter or battery (battery included)
* Top Quality parts
* Handmade in Akron, Ohio

And here is the video that I was referring to:

You can pick up the Earthquaker Devices Dirt Transmitter pedal for $145.00 at Fat Tone Guitars.

Xotic EP Booster EQ Effect Pedal

Xotic EP Booster EQ Effect PedalI’ve been hearing some talk about the Xotic EP Booster. Been seeing it on a few Pedal Line Friday submissions, and I wanted to take a closer look. Xotic makes some great pedals, and are really creating a giant name for themselves.  Looks like the EP Booster is modeled after the preamp side of the Echoplex EP-3.  Apparently, the circuit is quite different than the actual Echoplex (since the Echoplex’s preamp had additional requirements, etc). In a nutshell, this is a clean boost, but with more sparkle and definition.

Here is the official description:

What do the tones of renowned guitarist such as Page, EVH and Johnson have in common? They all used the legendary echo machine EP-3 as a pre-amp.
We’ve captured that magic in a new Xotic Effects pedal, the EP Booster.

We’ve used the highest quality parts available with a discrete FET design and low impedance output, the EP Booster provides up to +20dB of unadulterated boost with multi-dimensional, shimmering highs and lows, and no ear fatigue. The internal DIP switches let you choose the boost frequencies, and EQ settings.

Housed in a small 3.5″x 1.5″ x 1.5″ case with blue LED and transparent knob, the EP Booster can be powered by 9-volt up to 18-volts.

A simple pure boost that pays reverence to the magical EP-3 and captures the celebrated tones of the world’s most famous players.

Here is a video by XoticGuitars:

Fat Tone Guitars and Fairfield Circuitry - Barbershop OD GiveawayHere is some information about the Fairfield Circuitry Barbershop Overdrive Effect Pedal

Fairfield Circuitry Barbershop Overdrive Effect Pedal

The Fairfield Circuitry Barbershop is a low to mid-gain, hugely responsive overdrive pedal that lets the natural tone of your guitar and amp shine through. The Fairfield Circuitry Barbershop Overdrive really responds to pick attack – strike and pick hard and the Barbershop will distort naturally. Ease back, and the warm and transparent tone of the Barbershop and your guitar shines through. The Sag knob is the unique feature on this great pedal. Simulating the sag on an amp (or the dynamic responsiveness of a tube amp), this knob opens up the sonic possibilities of your overdrive sound.

Fat Tone Guitars is normally selling these for $160.00, so this is a GREAT give away!

Analog Man Peppermint Fuzz Pedal

Analog Man Peppermint Fuzz PedalMan, I’ve been eyeballing the Analog Man Peppermint Fuzz for a long time (they also offer the ‘dark’ peppermint as well).  What I understand, the Peppermint fuzz is the same circuit as the classic fuzz face, but with high gain NOS germanium transistors.

Here is the official specs of this fuzz:

The Analog Man Peppermint Fuzz Pedal is a nasty, buzzy fuzz pedal indeed. The Peppermint Fuzz, named from the song Incense and Peppermints, can whip out some far out fuzz tones. The PEPPERMINT FUZZ is similar to a fuzzface in architecture but has specific tweeks to make it a more flexible and much crazier effect pedal.

Features
1. True bypass on / off switch, no loss of tone when off.
2. Battery disconnected when INPUT cord removed (input is on the right).
3. No Power jack or LED as these are detrimental to the ultimate fuzz in sound and battery life (you will know when this pedal is on!!!!).
4. Positive ground power. If you share a power supply with a normal pedal (negative ground), you will destroy the power supply. This means you can’t use a daisy chain or a power supply with only one output. The PedalPower2 has all isolated outputs so that one would be safe.
5. Battery should be a cheap non-alkaline general purpose battery, as found in dollar stores. These sound better than an alkaline in this pedal, and even a cheap battery will last years since there is no LED.
6. For best sound, this effect should not have any buffers or non-true bypass effects between it and the guitar. But you can try other pedals before it for various effects.
7. Volume Knob (on the left) needs no explanation. Should be able to get nice and loud to kick up your amp.
8. Fuzz knob (on the right): Best to keep it up almost all the way up for craziest sounds. Turn it down for more normal fuzzface tones.
9. BUZZ knob: the knob in the center of the pedal. This allows controlling the sound of the fuzz from weak to hard edged fuzz. You can turn it down to get a warmer looser fuzz sound which can sometimes be useful. Turning it up gets louder and harder, good for Neil Young sounds. You may find you need to turn it down a bit (CCW) at higher temperatures, and up (CW) at lower temperatures. For standard fuzzface tones turn the BUZZ knob down a bit along with the FUZZ knob.

Gearmanndude put out a great demo for the Peppermint fuzz. The first video is with single coils (strat) and the other video is with humbuckers (SG).

MXR Classic 108 Silicon Fuzz

MXR M-173 Classic 108 Fuzz Guitar Effects Pedal Here is another cool pedal courtesy of Fat Tone Guitars. It’s the MXR Classic 108 Fuzz (M173). It’s a nice sounding silicon fuzz with that classic sounding break up. I thought it was interesting that this pedal has a buffer switch so you can have a wah in front. Curious about this, normally it’s the ‘buffer’ itself (I’m thinking) is what some people don’t like to have in front of the fuzz. I’m wondering if this is a ‘reverse’ buffer switch which will convert hi impedance signal to lo before the circuit? Anyone have any ideas on this?

Here is the official description:

MXR Classic 108 Silicon Fuzz Effect Pedal M173- Guitarists of all styles, from Hendrix devotees to garage rockers and stoner-metal fanatics, will dig the familiar late-Sixties/early-Seventies crunch delivered by the new MXR Classic 108 Fuzz. MXR has taken the guts of our BC-108 loaded Fuzz Face, placed them in a more pedal-board friendly shape, and added the modern conveniences of a battery door, optional AC operation, and true bypass with LED. The Buffer switch eliminates the audible oscillation caused when some wah-wahs are placed in front of a Fuzz Face. The Classic 108 Fuzz comes in a heavy-duty Phase 100-sized box with a sweet hammer-tone turquoise finish.

Wampler Plexidrive British Overdrive

Wampler Plexidrive British Overdrive Effect PedalI’ve been wanting to check out some Wampler pedals for a long time. This one sure caught my eye. It’s the Wampler Plexidrive British Overdrive and is available at Fat Tone Guitars.

Here is the official description at Fat Tone:

The Wampler Plexidrive British Overdrive Pedal will give you low overdrive to medium gain distortion designed to give you great “Marshall JTM45″ type tones. Many feel this sounds just like early AC/DC tones such as ‘dirty deeds done dirt cheap’. This is a great overdrive that needs to be heard. The bass boost adds great depth and presence. Without the bass boost it lends that legendary british drive and tone to your sound.

NOC3 Effects Pure Drive Overdrive

NOC3 Effects Pure Drive OverdriveToday I wanted to take a closer look at the NOC3 Pure Drive Overdrive. I wasn’t too familiar with the product or the company, only heard the name bounced around at forums and what not. So first, I wanted to share some info about NOC3 first. I first checked out their website (in particular their ‘about’ page). Basically, here is the base info about them:

“NOC3 Effects was launched in 2006. I had no idea how long it would last or if it would be a worthwhile venture. I did it because I enjoyed building great sounding pedals and I wanted to make them available to everyone. NOC3 is a small individually owned and operated business and is very much a ”one man show.” I build every single pedal by hand. I do everything. I design the circuit and PCB artwork, I source the components, I do all of the soldering, wiring, layout, silkscreen artwork, assembly, marketing and customer support. No mass production methods are used. The only thing I have done by someone else is the enclosure powder coating and silk screening, this is for aesthetics only and has no effect on tone. I see each pedal as a work of art that I am proud to put my name on. You can be assured that everything from NOC3 Effects has been engineered and crafted with care by an individual who obsesses as much about tone as you do. A musical instrument built by a musician. You can always count on NOC3 for great service and competitive prices for pedals that go above and beyond the competition.”

Next, let’s get into some details about the Pure Drive Overdrive. Here is the official description of the pedal:

The NOC3 Effects Pure Drive couples a versatile clean to mean overdrive circuit with a clean boost running in parallel to the overdrive. With the “Clean” knob you can blend any ratio of the two together. What does that mean? It means you can do more than just overdrive your signal. You can mix in a little clean boost to add chord clarity, punchy attack, and clean chimey highs while the overdrive side of the pedal enhances sustain and supplies the growling midrange. Do you love the tone of your amps overdrive but want some more? Set the Pure Drive mostly clean and blend in just the right amount of additional overdrive. Maybe you’re running a clean amp and need a pedal that can cover a wide range of overdrive tones? Set the Pure Drive mostly dirty and go from there. Great for lead or rhythm into clean or dirty amps.

Fat Tone Guitars currently has a video demo of this pedal (fattone77):

I wanted to hear some more overdrive and see what else this pedal could do, and I found a nice demo by roknfnrol:

You can pick up the NOC3 Pure Drive Overdrive for $175.00 at Fat Tone Guitars!

Empress Tap Tempo Tremolo Effect Pedal – Sale

Empress Tap Tempo Tremolo Effect PedalI just saw that Phil from Fat Tone Guitars tweeted about a sale going on for the Empress Tap Tempo Tremolo Effect Pedal. I just recently did a post about the Empress Superdelay, so this is a nice follow-up post! Looks like you can save $25 today/tomorrow on the Empress Tap Tempo Tremolo Effect Pedal with the following code at checkout: EMP25

Here is the description of the Empress Tap Tempo Tremolo Effect Pedal:

The Empress Tap Tremolo is an original design built from the ground up to include innovative features without sacrificing tone. The audio signal path is analog, but the tremolo effect is controlled digitally via opto technology.

Pristine Sound- The Empress Tremolo has to be heard to be believed. It’s whisper quiet and free from the “LFO throb” usually associated with tremolos. We dare anyone to find a better sounding tremolo.

Waveform Selection – You can modulate your sound with three different waveforms. An asymmetrical tremolo was modelled after a ’65 Fender Vibrolux (brown face) to give you the fullest tremolo sound possible. A square wave can be utilized if you’re after a harder sound. And if you’re looking for a more normal tremolo, you can use the triangle wave setting.

Tap Tempo – The Empress Trem averages your last four taps so it plays in sync with your music. You can also choose different tap to tremolo rate ratios. 1:1, 1:2, and 1:4 are available.

Two Speed Mode – An exclusive feature to the Empress Trem. You’re able to set two different rates, and switch between them using the tap tempo stompswitch. This is similar to playing through a Leslie cabinet and changing the speed.

Rhythms – Another exclusive feature. The Empress Trem will definiately do your run-of-the-mill tremolo sound to a tee. But you can also set it to play different rhythms. Check out the soundclips for examples.

Gain – A problem with most tremolos on the market is that when they’re engaged, you hear a noticeable drop in volume. The Empress Trem solves this by having a gain stage on the output. It’s able to deliver up to 6dB of gain without adding any distortion to the signal.

True Bypass – The Empress Trem employs true bypass, so you can be sure that it’s not affecting the signal when disengaged.

Perfect Size – The enclosure measures approximately 4.5″ by 3.5″ by 1.5″, which is delightfully small when considering all the features packed into this unit.

According to Empress’ site, this pedal’s price is $449. Fat Tone Guitars has the Empress Tap Tempo Tremolo pedal for $249.95 (plus $25 off with the coupon code EMP25
