I get asked about about compressors quite a bit. I’m actually surprised how much in fact. There are definitely a lot of great options, and obviously it’s very dependent on the particular need for the compression and/or style of music you’re playing. I found this cool video by EHX where they demonstrate how the EHX Soul Preacher (compressor/sustainer) makes the Nano Muff Overdrive react. Since the Soul Preacher has a low impedance it boosts the performance of the Muff Overdrive. This brings up an important point – changing the position of certain pedals can alter/improve the characteristics of the pedals. Make sure you experiment to find what works best for you!

I was contact by Dan from DDyna Music to see if I would be interested to put EffectsBay.com on the list for the Bass 10 Compressor/Overdrive tour box, and I was very much interested. I really like the ‘tour box’ concept where a builder sends it out for review, and then each reviewer passes it to the next on the list. Who know how many miles this compressor will travel before it arrives back home.

The DDyna Bass 10 is a great compressor Overdrive, primarily for bass players, but has a spot for the guitarists out there. I don’t have a bass, and wouldn’t be qualified to do any demos regarding bass, so this demos is purely a guitar oriented review. Again, for this review, I enlisted help from Jimmy Rolle.

The layout of the pedal is broken down into three sections – EQ, Overdrive and Compression. The Bass10 has 4 Bandpass filters (Bass, Mid Low, Mid High and Treble) in the EQ section. The Overdrive section has Overdrive Volume, Depth and Drive. The Compressor side has Compressor Volume, Compression Ratio and Sustain.

There are two footswitches – one that enables the pedal and another that turns the Overdrive section on and off. The pedal operates from 12 to 18VDC so no battery option.

For the first clip, Jimmy is playing a American Fender Stratocaster into his Rivera Knucklehead (clean channel). This review will focus on various settings (playing a similar line between on and off) and finally into using the Bass 10′s overdrive section.

This second clip is Jimmy playing on the Gain Channel of the Rivera Knucklehead. He is also playing a Les Paul Custom Shop Elegant guitar for this clip. The concept here is to see how the compressor affects lead playing on the gain side. Also he engages the Overdrive as well to see how it sounds with amp distortion and overdrive combined.

Both audio recordings were recorded with a AKG Solidtube and Shure SM57 microphones.

The DDyna Bass 10 is a very versatile compressor with the ability to dial in various tones. The low and high mid bandpass filters offer some very specific shaping which is nice. I can really see how bass players could really benefit using a compressor to focus their sound, and the option for overdrive is a nice as well.

I posted about the Pigtronix Philosopher’s Tone Compressor in the past, but I just saw this recent video review.. and it’s a great demo of this pedal. For those that aren’t familiar with the pedal, here is the description:

I’ve been hearing a lot of good things about the EBS MultiComp compressor, so I thought I would bring it up today. Again, this was mentioned on last Friday’s Pedal Line Friday. Apparently bass players have been going nuts about this. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find great videos on it.. but I did find a few.

Wow. Just stumbled across the Pigtronix Philosopher King Compressor and Sustainer. This is a great pedal.. with lots of sonic potential.

The Pigtronix Philosopher King is a compressor, sustainer, distortion and polyphonic amplitude synthesizer. Combining our award-winning Philosopher’s Tone circuit with a next generation envelope generator, the Philosopher King takes tone several steps further with a full set of ADSR (Attack/Decay/Sustain/Release) controls including swell, fade, hold level, speed range, one-shot mode, selectable auto reset, CV i/o and expression pedals for swell and fade times.

With the Swell and Fade functions switched off, the Philosopher King provides transparent optical compression with endless sustain on tap. Adjustable compression (ratio), sustain (threshold) and treble (2k cut / boost) controls allow the musician to tailor the nature of the effect to meet the needs of the material at hand. From a subtle dash of added punch to massive, over-the-top howling sustain, the Philosopher King delivers clean, powerful optical compression. The grit control blends in a layer of sweet harmonic distortion that plays nice with other gain pedals as well as amplifier-generated tube distortion.

The Philosopher King’s swell function provides a pick triggered volume swell effect. The volume swell can be reset at any moment by muting or held open by continuous playing. This “slow gear” type effect is smooth and controllable with variable timing from extremely fast to very slow.

The fade function can be used independently of the swell and is also pick triggered. A major new feature of the decay cycle in this pedal is the ability to fade out from peak level only partially, bringing the audio down to a predetermined level, set by the hold control. The hold level is then maintained until the player releases the note to close the cycle. With the auto reset turned on, the cycle will begin again immediately, creating undulating amplitude modulation and even pulsating tremolo stutter effects at faster decay settings. With the auto-reset turned off, the player determines the exact timing for the beginning of the next cycle.

Another new feature is the one shot mode, which causes the Philosopher King to run through the swell / fade / hold / release cycle regardless of what is played after the cycle is triggered. In this mode, the Philosopher King creates complex waves of amplitude modulation on top of the music coming from your instrument. A trigger input jack allows the swell and fade functions to be controlled by an external source such as a band mate or drum track.
