Community Question Results: Any of you dealing with wrist pain and/or carpal tunnel issues when playing guitar/bass?

EffectsBay Community QuestionA few days ago @pelossus asked me – “@effectsbay i can’t remember if i asked, but i can’t be the only guitarist who is dealing with carpal tunnel. any solutions from you/others?“.

I thought this would be a great community question. A long time ago, when I was cooking, I definitely had wrist issues when playing guitar. I was playing a Les Paul then and I can’t remember if changing professions was the fix.. or raising the guitar. I jacked up the guitar a few notches (and that’s my current height today). I think keeping the wrist in a neutral position is a big part of the solution.  I also tried to stretch before and after playing (but I rarely do that today).

So I created the following community question - Community Question: Any of you dealing with wrist pain and/or carpal tunnel issues when playing guitar/bass? If so, how do you manage it? – and posted that to Twitter and Facebook. Here are the results. If you have more to add, please comment below!

Telephants @effectsbay I realized i was playing with a wrong technique.
dantemilo @effectsbay I stopped playing for a while.
Telephants @effectsbay also wrists bands are helpful to keep your wrists warm and are good to avoid excesive moves.
johlogric @effectsbay I shoot a little heroin to manage the pain
noisenik @effectsbay I have wrist pain from doing any repetitive music stuff.. I learned some yoga stretches for it when I was in college that help

Derek Owen Doss Yes. Acupuncuncture, massage, proper form and rest.
Sam Binder Back pain caused by slouching for feedback and a heavy guitar. I cope by remembering to lower myself with my knees to get the guitar level with the speaker and by taking breaks.
Jeffrey Bailey Yeah on the repetitive quick stuff on the bass. I have started stretching my hand muscles for about 10 minutes before I play and drinking a lot of h2o. That seems to help.
Gato Pardo del Monte Go to a specialist
Doug Osborne Fresh fruit/veggies/lean protein/whole grain diet. Yoga. Rest. Wear supportive gloves when not playing. Quit smoking. Alcohol in moderation.
Lou Remondelli Aleve aspirin Tylenol ! day by day !
Angelo Bovara For carpal tunnel, I did massage therapy 3 times a week for three weeks. This included rubbing, stretching, strange ambient music, and fountains that made me need to pee. Then i did constant stretching for another week.

All the while not even touching my bass.

Then I started back playing, easy stuff at first and paying extra attention to my form.

Still stretching all the time while not playing.

I stopped as soon as I felt something was wrong and it still took a month to get back on the neck.
Luca Notari I stopped playing for a while ‘, but the pain does not pass, next month I will work to cut the median nerve of the right wrist
Daniel Hogan I have had both hands operated on for CT and trigger finger on the right hand. Nerve pain sucks.
Mark Stears I also ended up having both hands / wrists operated on. No fun, but no problems since either. (Knocking on wood)
Jeffrey Gordon Operations, and Advil, but pain is diminished by the thrill of playing so no big deal yet.
Mike Freed I have rheumatoid arthritis in my wrists and hands. Low dose chemo, a tight paracord bracelet and the thrill of having the guitar in my hands helps me.
Jade Masque Amputation
Greg Papakostas For me playing drums.the tendon that goes to my thumbs tightens up and i cant hold the sticks.also playing bass

Community Question Results: What cool of piece of musical gear did you get for x-mas?

EffectsBay Community QuestionIt’s been a while since I asked a Community Question! After Christmas, I thought it would be an easy question to see what everyone scored for musical gear. This is the season of hopefully getting something great from someone, or buying yourself a nice gift. As for me, I didn’t get anything exciting… A MXR 6 Band EQ pedal is all. I needed it for switching between baritone/bass vi style guitars and my regular guitars. I figured this would be cheaper than having two amps for now. Sad part, I haven’t had time to test the effectiveness yet.

Here are the answers everyone gave on Facebook and Twitter. If you would like to contribute, please comment below!

Ben Brandt PRS Bernie Marsden SE, Blackstar 112 cab and a Blackstar HT-DistX distortion pedal.
Keith Wilson Mod tone analog delay
Tim Warner I got a POG2 ! yay!
Michael Chaucer Stettes Got a 13ft. Monster Rock cable. I know people say they’re overhyped, and maybe so, but I already have one and it’s never given me issues, it looks good, and it coils well.
Nick Coccimiglio A Joe Bonamassa signature series Dunlop wah! Fresh off the presses, can’t even get ‘em in the stores yet. Sweet!
Pam DiFelice Schaff Rocktron Black Cat Moan Wah Pedal
Chris Gilman I got a mug with pictures of guitars on it.
Corey Blackburn Spider capo!
Blake RoboPuddin Corder I got a toolkit for working on my guitar, a Golden Age Pre-73 preamp for recording, and money for buying more gear!
Alex Beach A zvex instant lo-fi junky!
Daniel Wesolowski IRig
Jeffrey Bailey I got a lexicon omega. Now I can do some recording.
Steven Bourgaize New cymbal :D
Jeff Swan GC gift card
Steve Reese Snark and a GC GC
Andrew Clock wall hangers for my guitars – protection from a one-year-old
Scott Heger Strymon Timeline!
John Danchisko EHX Freeze
Travis Broughton Zvex lofi loop junky !
John Phillips A Boss PS-5 Pitch Shifter.
Ryan Rukavina A parrot that sings Paranoid and headbangs.
James Thomas Nothing at all. :(
Keith Cordell Epiphone Mandobird.
Randall Brown Wee Wah!
Gerard Burick My mom sent me the MXR Bass Envelope Filter!
Brian Kelly Fender amp!

Best Delay / Echo Pedals Under $200

Best Delay / Echo Pedals Under $200A while back, I posted the Top 5 Delay Pedals on the Market. I mentioned that this was tough because defining “best” is difficult. Is the most expensive mean best? Is the most popular best? So today I thought I would add a community poll. I’ve eliminated the price to define best by making the options within the under $200 mark. This will cover a lot of the widely used delay/echos out there. So with this group of delays, what do you feel is best. Please vote below and if you have a comment or opinion, or if you know of a delay not in the list, please comment below.

When determining what pedals fall in this category, I opted to not go with MSRP (list price) but the commonly available prices of these pedals.

Community Question Results – What was your biggest sacrifice to see a show?

EffectsBay Community QuestionA couple of days ago I asked what was the biggest sacrifice you made to see a show. It didn’t necessarily have to be a monetary sacrifice. I was curious what some of you had to say. You see, being from Montana, it can be a major pain in the ass to catch some of the great shows. It’s 10 hours to Seattle, 11 hours to Portland and 13 hours to Denver. So my options are to either burn an entire day driving to these locations or fork out plane ticket.  I was looking at a show that my wife and myself were interested in seeing in Los Angeles. Figure $250 for plane tickets (x2), hotel, rental car and $100/ticket.. it gets pricey for a weekend. Sometimes you just have to make it happen. So, I was curious what some of you had to go through. Here were some of the responses. If you have something to add please comment below!

Jon Tufnell Mine is the other way round. I had to sell tickets to BRMC’s 1000th special show in London to attend a friend’s wedding. That felt like a HUGE sacrifice for friendship!
Kellan Itsnoteasybeing Green I had to sell my laptop, almost lose my job by ignoring my boss, and spend $100 on tickets and $40 on gas to see System of a Down.
Peter Trabucchi Lost a car to see Phish in Providence, got in a 4 car wreck on a 5 lane bridge at 65 miles an hour, car totaled, still found a way to the show
Chris Reid Most recent one: Peter Daltrey (Kaleidoscope/Fairfield Parlour) – his first show in 39 years – and The Asteroid No. 4 in San Francisco. On the way home (4am) had a blowout in the middle of nowhere. Put on the (useless) spare which blew out 30 minutes later. Then the tow company couldn’t find me….
What should’ve been a quick road trip ended up with $200 worth of towing and $300 worth of new tires.
But the show was great, so there’s that… :)
(if that’s what you were asking for…)
Charlie Webster Kind of opposite too. Traded my ticket to see Janes Addiction at the first lollapalooza for my first guitar. still feel pretty good about that decision.
Mark Walker Skipped my chemistry final in college to go see “The Jam” Got a D in the class and that is why I didn’t graduate Cum Laude
Brian Mack I drove 19.5 hours straight once to see a Phish show in WI. Also a girl.
Michael Burgess I left my 2 month old home alone to go to a concert. It was in another state but I made it back before dawn.
Lorinc Del Motte I’m not that dedicated!

Community Question: The one pedal – results/responses

EffectsBay Community QuestionYesterday I asked the following community question – If you had to pick one pedal to have for the rest of your life, what pedal would that be? I wanted to see what you all had to say about this. This is a great way to learn about other pedals, and to see what people are passionate about. Clearly, any pedal mentioned, is something worth considering in the future when in search of a new pedal.

I’ve had a few emails asking me what my answer to the question is – since I didn’t answer it in the previous post. Like I mentioned I thought it was pretty easy, but it’s not. One person mentioned his TU-2. Even though it’s not an effect, I would put that on the list, but since that’s not very exciting. I think I would put the Paul Cochrane Tim overdrive as the top. I use to use a Ibanez TS-9 and replaced it with the Tim for the lead overdrive boost and that thing is pretty awesome. #2 would be my T-Rex Replica delay. Lately I’ve been messing around with delay parts so been having lots of fun with that and a Boss DD-3.

So anyway, enough about me, let’s see the responses. This is a collection of Twitter, Facebook and Comments so we can get them all in one place. If you missed the original post and want to contribute, please comment below!

Responses from Facebook

Andrew J. Masterson With my current collection, I’d have to go with my Boss DD-20. It’s not my ideal choice, but I have to say a delay is the single most important effect I have to have.
Justin Vigeant Has to be an overdrive… and the one I have had most luck with is the Fulltone Full Drive 2.
Joshua Dawson HA! As soon as Omar bawked, I got upset. The poor man clearly likes pedals, but he’s never fallen in love. Mine is easy: my Ibanez DDL, the green one, not the blue DL10. It’s a sweet, versatile, durable delay pedal with a great, warm analog feel and an unlatched hold-delay mode that I modded for fast, glitchy stutter delay. I could not live without that pedal.
Jeffrey Bailey I would have to say a carbon copy. It sounds amazing and there is no replacement for a good delay. I run mine at 18v and it is the only pedal I must have.
Ggiiaaxx Seldom DMM organic beauty
Dave N Michele Clinton Fulltone GT500!
Ian Ross Id be really torn between my ol reliable tubescreamer and my airplane flanger….. the flanger is signed by Paul Gilbert so its more of a sentimental thing than a functionality thing.
Paul Dmytrewycz It’s not an effect, but I’ve always said that the one pedal I own that I absolutely cannot function without is my Boss TU-2 tuner.
Andrew Clock DMM or EHX Holiest Grail
Jeremy M Cohen Boss Chorus CE-5
Kelevra Villalobos My Frankenmuff (Big Muff modified)… i really need that fuzz
Brian Mack I’ve got a Keeley modded Sparkle Drive that has become my fave recently. I can’t imagine ever getting rid of it.

Responses from Twitter

will_spicer @effectsbay Morley little alligator & tied 2nd #Fulltone OCD and #DMB Foxy pi-rate. hate to choose amongst my many delays/reverbs.
DosEXmachina29 @effectsbay, big muff
jdstalnaker @effectsbay ts9
senorpuma @effectsbay believe it or not, my Ibanez SuperMetal – I have it dialed in to a very subtle darkness that I love #favoritepedal

Comments from the original post:

Nick my BYOC tri-boost, adds some very nice crunch with very little compression…
Michael Burgess I think I would have to have my Q-balls bass envelope. Bass is just bass without a filter. I need the funk.
Lee I’m going to assume multi effects pedals are out of the question? If so, easy answer for me – Boss FL2 flanger. I can get any range of chorus-ey, tremelo-ey, semi-phaser-ey (and of course flanger-ey) sound I need. If I want crunch, I can just push the amp harder. (I hope we’re not on a desert island.)
Jon Patton My Malekko 616. Hard for me to live without an orange squeezer and volume pedal, but it’s awfully hard to fake delay.
Gary Vogel Cannot live without delay, and the best is my TimeFactor by Eventide. I love dirt, but I get is from my VHT or EVHII amps just fine.
Chris Barrus My Moogerfooger analog delay. I can pretty much get what I want with the right guitar/amp combo, but like the commenter above said – it’s awfully hard to fake delay.
Mike Definitely my Dwarfcraft Eau Claire Thunder, it’s the base of my tone. Plus it’s versatile enough and I love the feedback loop.
Skattabrain Blackout Effectors Twosome Fuzz… you can get usable fuzz, distortion and even a clean boost from it.

Community Question: The one pedal

EffectsBay Community QuestionI realized today that I haven’t asked a community question in a while. Today’s video with Omar from The Mars Volta inspired me. In that video he was asked something like “If you had to pick one pedal to have for the rest of your life, what pedal would that be?” I thought that would be a great question here. Omar slightly buckled on that question and settled on a genre or type of pedal, but not here. What would be the one pedal that you would need to keep? For a second, I thought it would be easy but I’m feeling stumped as well.

Please comment below or on Facebook and Twitter. I’ll repost the results. Always fun to see what everyone has to say!

Community Question Responses: What pedal do you have on your board that you’re wanting to replace? What would you like to replace it with and why?

EffectsBay Community QuestionA couple of days ago I posted the following Community Question on Facebook and Twitter – “What pedal do you have on your board that you’re wanting to replace? What would you like to replace it with and why?” I wanted to ask this question, because a pedal line seems to always be in motion.  Sometimes slowly in motion, sometimes the pedals come on and off on a weekly basis. In my personal experience pedals come and go based on the need at that particular time. The need is usually associated with tone or actual effect for the song/band. This is then followed up, in my case, with finding something that performs or sounds better than what I have initially until I’m satisfied. That satisfaction point can last for years or until next band practice! I was curious what pedals people had out there that were on the “bubble” so to speak, and what they were hoping to get one day. These community questions are great to get some new ideas or to put some pieces on the radar for down the road. Thanks everyone for your responses!

On Facebook

Tom Striker My Line 6 DL4, because it is a monster and engulfs my entire board. I want something smaller and less complex for delay. Delay pedals are mad expensive though :/
Dan Cross I have a cheapo Beta Aivin Digi Delay that I want to replace with a BOSS RE20. For obvious reasons.
Michael Chaucer Stettes Was using my Barber Dirty Bomb to add sme distortion to my bass, but now I think I’d rather have a Tech 21 Red Ripper. I think it’s more attuned to what I’m looking for bass-wsie.
Sam Binder have a DOD DFX9 for some delay on my synth that I want to replace with an El Capistan for greater BoC sounds
Bernie Mulleda My line 6 MM4 is pretty worn out after 12 years of hard use, I wouldn’t mind getting another one, it covers a lot of territory!
Kneale Brown EHX holy grail > Strymon blue sky
Abi Robins I converted an old volume pedal into an expression pedal for a project I was working on. It was a crappy volume pedal to begin with, so the conversion didn’t do much to help it. I’d love to get a new, more reliable expression pedal.
Jeffrey Howard On your tip to the sale on Amazon I replaced my Fender tuner with the TC Electronics. Thanks for the tip!
Matt McQueen eventide timefactor with Strymon Timeline
Andrew J. Masterson Boss RV-5 with an Electro-Harmonix Holiest Grail. The RV-5 is decent, but the amount of features and tone of the Holiest Grail is amazing. I just wish they still made it.
Will Peck My BBE Free Fuzz, but with what I’m not yet sure. The BBE pedal is perfectly fine-sounding, but I think a different style (heavier?) fuzz might be more suited to my tonal tastes.
Michael Chaucer Stettes @Will Peck. Wampler Leviathan. I have one. It’s awesome. Get it.
Matt Miller I don’t put things on my board that I want to replace.
Robert Berges FuzzHuggerFX Absynth 4-knob > would like the newer 5 knob, I hesitated on buying it for two months because I thought it need the 5th. One year later… blammo. I would also trade for the FH Algal Bloom and possibly Electro Harmonix Bass Synth. (Not that I’m in any hurry to do so!)
Ivan Lopez Garrido I got a LPB-1 and i just want another better sounding boost.
Eric Oskanian Due to the financial mortgage crisis and having a vacant house on the market for 4.5 yrs, I had to sell off everything.I would love to have a board again and would very much like a Fulltone Trower wah pedal.
Peter Brennan Danelectro Fabtone. Great pedal, but not really usable in my current band. I really need a good reverb to replace it, cos I got fuzz up the wazoo (pardon?) elsewhere on my board.
Antonio Cristiano my boss hf-2 and mxr micro chorus are about to leave my pedalboard for a hbe frost bite flanger – just waiting some money to do it! my big muff has already left my board, in the next future I’ll purchase a new fuzz – most probably a fuzzhugg…er ab-synth. maybe I would replace my vox v845 wah too, with a real mccoy or something like that – that vox is great for the price but a bit noisy. in the end, I’d like to replace the GAS from my guitarist soul! xD
Tim Warner My DoD chorus that I am forced to use since my MXR one died! It is an overwarbly P.O.S. that has no good qualities whatsoever but when your in a working cover band and the song calls for a chorus you don’t have much of a choice! I tried to sell it once on ebay and couldn’t even get a lousy $10.00 for it(that’s a pack of cigarettes here in New York)!
Andrew J. Masterson I also want to replace my Boss PH-2 and CH-1 with a Red Witch Deluxe Moon phaser, and a Red Witch Empress chorus.
Jack Broughan A vox A/B switch that half works. I think I’m too emotionally attached to take it off my board.

On Twitter

Milerky2 @effectsbay boss CE-5 with a TC Electronics nova modulator.
TheeHolliday @effectsbay boss cs-3 for a keeley or strymon.
calebdenman @effectsbay i have a Ibanez TS9 i want to replace with a Timmy or similar OD because i moved to a tube amp, dont need a tube screamer
Gilligan204 @effectsbay Not a pedal, but I need a stompbox tuner eventually.
thelorddread @effectsbay a danelectro flanger id like to replace with an electric mistress. someone just threw it in on a trade and i can see why.
tiogitar @effectsbay digitech digidelay, the reason I want it replace coz its seams that I need to change delay type (cont) http://tl.gd/b8pe4l
MRMONITO @effectsbay Cry baby from hell, want to replace it with a Vox V847.I think the CBFM doesn´t worth the money, don´t like it at all. :(

Community Question Results: What piece of the tone puzzle are you missing? Guitar? Amp? Pedal(s)? Skill? What do you need to do?

EffectsBay Community QuestionYesterday I asked the following Community Question on Twitter and Facebook: “What piece of the tone puzzle are you missing? Guitar? Amp? Pedal(s)? Skill? What do you need to do?” Here were the results! If you want to submit your answer, please comment below!

Twitter

RChevalier @effectsbay hmmm.. all of them … LOL
idhindsight @effectsbay: Gear can be caught, skill can’t. So that’s what I’m lacking. That and theory.
tiogitar A record deal, that would be a blast
RChevalier @effectsbay we never sufficient skills, and always will exist better equipments
filipeguitar @effectsbay Skill :)
SONICSHIFTBAND @thepedalnerd @effectsbay A great sound person running the board ! : )
MMisanthropy @effectsbay Tube poweramp. I’d love a Mesa 2:90 or VHT 2/50/2 but I’ll give the Atomic MB50 a spin.
thomas4th @effectsbay Skill, definitely. Of course, more gear is always nice. :)
GuitarJar @effectsbay Skill!
progbusters @effectsbay skills

Facebook

Paul Licke Skill and practice, lot’s of practice
Otis Ehrlich A 1958 les paul vos and and maybe a marshall plexi superlead?!?!
David Verdugo Fender Twin Reverb and lots of practice.
Matt Wolf I would like to know more about how the order of pedals effects the sound…. I know there are guidelines on how to place your pedals in a chain. Let’s hear more about that.
Florian Zeh Rught now: Amp. Always: Practice.
Dean Tompkins I don’t need skills or practice…I just keep buying more gear cuz THAT will make me sound better….right guys?
Maurice Richard Libby Oddly, what I really need is an amp that gives me the same tone as some if the modellers I use. I’d like an amp that would give me the Tweed and Twin sounds from my Korg Pandora.
Sam Binder practise and a 128-step sequencer. 64 isn’t cutting it. Maybe a better drum brain module too.
Christian Artieda Probably a good amp is what I need right now
Will Peck I’m shopping for a real stage-worthy amp so I can go electric with a full band. I mainly play rhythm (sometimes a little lead) and am leaning toward the ’65 Deluxe Reverb reissue.
Dan Cross Practice. More gigs. More free beer. And a bunch of pedals I’m never going to be able to afford. And a twin reverb.
Ben Brandt Time to practice. Never enough hours in the day.
Mick Blowe Waiting for a local dealer to get the SubDecay Proteus in stock so I can check it out – It’s not the kind of pedal I’d wanna buy without playing it first. But chances are I’ll buy it after playing it for 10 minutes. PS: I had a Deluxe Reverb reissue and it kinda sucked. They’ve really loosened their standards on what constitutes a reissue, and it doesn’t even hold a candle to a real Deluxe, or for that matter, a Top Hat Club Deluxe, which doesn’t have reverb, but blows the current Fenders off.

Community Question: What was your most embarrassing stage incident?

EffectsBay Community QuestionFor this EffectsBay Community Question, I’m going to do it a little backwards. Normally, I would post this question on Facebook and Twitter, then make a post with the results. With this Community Question: What was your most embarrassing stage incident, I’m figuring that the answers *may* exceed the 140 character limit for Twitter, so I’m asking to comment here. I’ll still add replies from Facebook and Twitter to this post though.

Normally, I also focus on the *positive* with these Community Questions, but this not so positive.. but I’m thinking their could be some humorous stories involved. I personally knew a guy that crapped his pants on stage while playing guitar and screaming a line of verse. Like a true showman.. he just *rode with it* and finished the set. I’m wondering if he would even consider it a embarrassing incident.. not sure. So let’s hear yours.. if you dare.

Community Question: New Music Day – What band and album is rockin’ your world right now?

EffectsBay Community QuestionI’ve been feeling a little stale in the music department lately. I have a MP3 server here at my office and it continuously plays on random, but I’ve been feeling a bit bored with what’s been playing, so I thought I would ask the community what band/album is rockin’ your world. I didn’t care if it was “new”, just looking for ideas that were new to me.

First off… I have to say, damn, there was some great stuff listed. I’ve been checking out a few of them at Amazon. I’m lovin’ the ability to buy MP3 albums there.

Brandon Bishop I’m really liking Animals as Leaders- Self titled, and I’m chomping at the bit for the new Darkest Hour album on the 22nd… just got my pre-order in, and have listened to the 2 released tracks over and over.
Mark Gray I’ve gone old school and dug out L7′s Bricks Are Heavy. The guitar tone on this album is incredible. I wish I could find out what equipment she’s using to get this tone, I’ve looked and looked and haven’t found anything.
Kevin Ian Listening to a band out of Virginia called Ceremony. Also been listening to A Place to Bury Strangers, and The Twilight Sad
Daniel Wesolowski Burzum – “fallen”
Florian Zeh Maserati – Pyramid of the sun!

Ben Brandt ABIII from Alter Bridge and Feeding the Wolves from 10 Years have been in my rotation for a few months now and don’t seem like they’re leaving anytime soon.
T.J. Harris Freak Guitar – The Road Less Traveled by Mattias IA Eklundh. This album will take your preconceptions about guitar music behind the tool shed and do illegal things to them. That’s a good thing, by the way. ^_^
Chad Cesaro Shiner and These Arms Are Snakes. Neither are together anymore. Whoops.
William Ricky Hall I’m rockin a couple of Bama bands, Ages Apart, Can You Hear Me and Evolett, For Your Consideration.
