Big Muff Pi USA with Bass

Electro-Harmonix Classics USA Big Muff PI Distortion / Sustainer Guitar Effects Pedal on bassI get asked a lot about what a good distortion/fuzz is for bass. I usually recommend the Bass Big Muff Pi, but here we have a quick demo of the USA Big Muff Pi and bass. I like this video since they sweep through all the knob settings while the bass rolls through the whole time. You really can get a grasp of what works.. and what doesn’t. The video features a Fender American Deluxe Jazzbass, and is using a Boss LS-2 to blend the fuzz. I have a LS-2, but never really experimented A-B blend modes. I like it.

The video is posted by NotSoWickedElphaba

You can pick up the Electro-Harmonix Classics USA Big Muff Pi for $79.35 at Musician’s Friend. If you’re interested in the Boss LS-2 Line Selector/Power Supply, that is available for $79.95 at Musician’s Friend as well.

Electro-Harmonix Germanium 4 Big Muff Pi Overdrive

Electro-Harmonix Germanium 4 Big Muff Pi Overdrive and Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal So I’ve been waiting for this for a while. Finally, there is a decent demo of the Electro-Harmonix Germanium 4 Big Muff Pi. Not sure why it’s been hard to find a good demo, but a couple of days ago Gearmanndude came through with his 8+ minute demo, and he really shows what it’s capable of.  The Electro Harmonix Germanium 4 Big Muff is split in two. One side is Overdrive and the other is Distortion and you can have them both on.

Here is the official description:

The Electro-Harmonix Germanium 4 Big Muff Pi overdrive and distortiuon pedal is a classic 1960′s overdrive based around a hand-selected germanium transistor. To get the best results from the E-H Germanium 4, just set aside some time to practice in a quiet room—just you, your amp, and the Germaium OD. The interaction of each control will reward you with many different flavors of exceptional vintage overdrive.

In addition to a Gain control, the Electro-Harmonix Germanium 4 overdrive lets you control Bias for attack and the circuit volts for that sweet spot found when a battery’s voltage dips.

The Gain control adjusts the amount of input signal that is fed to the Electro-Harmonix Germanium 4. The more the knob is rotated the harder the germanium transistor and drive components are hit. The Bias control adjusts the current gain that is sent to the Germanium transistor. It works together with the Voltage control to attain the over all tone. The bias control works specifically with the Germanium transistor. The Volts knob controls the amount of voltage that is applied to the Germanium OD. Set at full, 9V is applied. When set at minimum, 3V is applied. By limiting the voltage a number of interesting saturations can be set up for variations in tone.

A footswitch turns true bypass on or off.

The Electro-Harmonix Germanium 4 runs off of a 9V battery or you can connect a 9VDC adapter capable of delivering at least 100mA to the 9V power jack. The optional 9V power supply from Electro-Harmonix is 9.6DC-200BI (same as used by Boss and Ibanez) 9.6 Volts DC 200mA. The AC power adapter must have a barrel connector with center negative. The battery may be left in or taken out when using an adapter.

Here is the video by gearmanndude:

Bass Big Muff Pi

Bass Big Muff PiYesterday, @pelossus via Twitter asked about good fuzz for his bass player. I recommended the Bass Big Muff Pi. I know a few people that play this.. and love it. It’s based on the older green Russian Big Muff circuit, and I know of one bass player that plays that particular pedal. It’s also quite affordable to try out.

Here is the official description:

The Electro-Harmonix Bass Big Muff Pi is a distortion pedal that gives bass players that great distortion that the Big Muff is known for with no loss of low end. The Bass Big Muff Pi Pedal features controls for volume, tone, sustain, dual outputs (effect and dry for recording), and a mini switch for bass boost. The Electro-Harmonix Bass Big Muff Pi Distortion Pedal is powered by a single 9-volt battery or optional AC power supply (sold separately).

Electro-Harmonix XO Bass Big Muff PI Distortion Effects Pedal Features:

* On/Off switch
* Controls for Volume, Tone, and Sustain
* Dual outputs
* Mini Switch for Bass Boost
* Rugged metal chassis

I found this cool video by EHX featuring Jack Conte:

Right now, the Bass Big Muff Pi is available for only $82.35 at Amazon.com which includes FREE super saver shipping!

Russian Big Muff Pi Project

Last week I was asked to see if I could repair a old Marshall Guv’nor pedal for a friend that plays bass. He borrowed the pedal, but stopped functioning. I took a look at the guts and immediately diagnosed the problem to a broken wire leading from board to the output jack. A new solder connection and he was back in business.  But, he mentioned that he needed to get this back and was interested in the older Russian Big Muff Pi (large green enclosure). I remembered that I bought a Big Muff Pi (BMP) PCB from GeneralGuitarGadgets.com (GGG) a while ago, so I thought it would be a perfect little *fun* project.

I was happy to see that GGG had a schematic for the Russian Big Muff, so I started by printing that and finding all the various components.. which I had! Next was assembling the circuit board. After the circuit board and the pots were installed, I installed it to my breadboard tester to see I was in business… and sure enough, Big Muff tone was rockin’ the workspace.

The next phase was to get an enclosure. I had a few powder coated enclosures for a buffer project I’ve been working on, so I taped it up and started laying out the knobs and jack placement. Holes were drilled nicely with my Ace drill press (man.. I’m so glad I picked that thing up!).

Below is a shot of the BMP circuit board. I’d like to see if I can do some mods to this.. but may need to create one for myself. I already gave this to my friend (which was super psyched on his new Muff).Big Muff Pi Project - Gut Shot

Here is a shot of the top. The powder coat is cool.. changes from purple to brown depending on the lighting.

Electro-Harmonix Germanium 4 Big Muff Pi

Electro-Harmonix Germanium 4 Big Muff Pi Overdrive and Distortion Guitar Effects PedalI’ve been pretty excited about Electro-Harmonix Germanium 4 Big Muff Pi as soon as I heard about it. Basically, in a nut shell, this is a new Big Muff, using the Germanium transistor (vs. silicon). Apparently EHX found a stash of NOS Germanium transistors and are putting them to use. This Big Muff Pi is a little different since there are two modes. There is a overdrive section and a distortion section, and the sections can be used to cascade into each other. You would get two pedals for the price of one. The Overdrive section is basically the EHX Germanium OD pedal.

Here is the official description:

Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find some really good demos. I did find this one, but the amp/effect sounds a little off.. not sure. Video looks great though. The video is by mikemattdemo:

Electro-Harmonix Russian-Made Big Muff Pi

Russian Big MuffYesterday @adiibrahim asked what was better.. the Russian Big Muff Pi or the US Big Muffs? I first have to say, that there shouldn’t be a ‘better’ per se, but one might have the tone more suitable to your style or the tone you’re looking for. They’re different pedals with a different vibes. For me, I’m most familiar with the Russian Big Muff – Jimmy, the EffectsBay.com demo-machine uses the Russian Big Muff so I’ve heard that pedal plenty in the practice space.

I’ve contemplated purchasing a Big Muff many times, and almost pulled the trigger on the Big Muff w/Tone Wicker but still haven’t decided. I do have to say, that I do like the way the Russian Big Muff sounds, so it thought I would give it a post today.

I found this interesting video by GearWire…. and what appears to be the largest guitar in the world.

This pedal is no longer in production and are still available on eBay, etc. Check out PedalNerd.com for deals on the Electro-Harmonix Russian Big Muff Pi.

Electro-Harmonix Big Muff with Tone Wicker

Yesterday I mentioned that I’ve been interested in the Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi with Tone Wicker and found a  great shootout video. Today I’m about to pull the trigger on this box. I’m really liking the wicker switch and the ability to pull the tone complete out. I also like that you can dial it in for convential Big Muff tones as well. I found you can this pedal for a great price at Amazon, only $73.98 plus $4.50 for shipping. It’s normally $89.25 at Musician’s Friend plus shipping.

Here is the official description of the pedal and the wicker switch:

The Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi with Tone Wicker is a guitar effects pedal that taps into the sonic power of the legendary Big Muff Pi, and creates new tonal possibilities at the flick of a switch—or two. Use the Wicker switch to open up 3 high-frequency filters for raspy, sustaining distortion with top-end bite, or flick on the Tone switch to bypass the tone control for unabated tonal slam. Want the original Big Muff sound? Just switch off the Wicker and turn on the Tone. The ability to create your own personal Big Muff sound is what truly makes this guitar pedal the Wicked Wicker.

Electro-Harmonix XO Big Muff Pi with Tone Wicker Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal Features:

  • True bypass
  • The Wicker switch opens up 3 high frequency filters providing a sustain that is raspy and defined
  • The Tone switch completely removes the tone control, providing a devastating broadband Big Muff slam
  • With the Wicker switch off and the Tone switch on, you have the original Big Muff Pi
  • 9V battery included
  • Optional power supply available (not included)

I also found a nice video by EHXCentral showing how the wicker and tone switches alter the tone of the Big Muff.

Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi shootout

I’ve personally been really interested in the Big Muff Pi with Tone Wicker, and of course my favorite reviewer on YouTube, gearmandude, had a sweet shoot out between the Big Muff Pi w/Tone Wicker, Little Big Muff and NYC Big Muff Pi. I really wish the Russian Big Muff was in the mix, since that’s the one I’m the most familiar with, but I was liking the sound of the Big Muff Pi w/Tone Wicker!

You can pick up the following pedals at Musician’s Friend:

Big Muff Pi with Tone Wicker for $89.25
Little Big Muff Pi for $66.75
Or find some used/new Big Muffs on eBay at PedalNerd.com
