Kenny Wayne Shepherd Pedal Board – Experience Hendrix

Yesterday I posted the charity auction that Analog Man was putting on for Japan Tsunami relief. In that auction he was giving away a signed Analog Man King of Tone pedal from Kenny Wayne Shepherd. In the listing there was a shot of Kenny’s board during the Experience Hendrix tours, so thought it would be fun to break down the pedals for those of you interested. There was one unidentified pedal in there, so if you can shed some light, please do by commenting below.

Here is Kenny Wayne Shepherd’s Pedal Board:

Kenny Wayne Shepherd Pedal Board - Experience HendrixHere are the following pedals I was able to identify. Going from bottom right to left:

Chicago Iron Octavia

Ibanez TS808HW Tubescreamer
Analog Man Bi-Chorus
Boss TU-2 Tuner
Analog Man AR20DL
?? Amp Switcher
Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2 Power Supply

I’m not sure about the Amp Selector/Switcher model or the red pedal directly left of the Boss TU-2 tuner. If you know.. please comment below!

UPDATE

Just got word via Twitter the red pedal is the Analog Man AR20DL pedal.

Analog Man King of Tone KoT – KWS, Japan Tsunami relief

Analog Man King of Tone KoT - KWS, Japan Tsunami reliefThis is a interesting auction on eBay I just stumbled upon. It’s a Analog Man King of Tone (KoT) pedal owned/played by Kenny Wayne Shepherd used in the Experience Hendrix tour from 2009 to 2010. It’s signed by Kenny Wayne Shepherd as well. All proceeds from this auction will go to the Japan Tsunami relief.. so great cause.

Here is the official description of the auction:

Kenny sent this pedal back to us after using it heavily, in July 2009 when we installed new chips (he played it so much, he wore out the chips!!!). He then used again it till late 2010 when I sent him a new one for recording. I asked him to sign it for me for this auction and he graciously did that for us.

If you were lucky enough to see the EXPERIENCE HENDRIX tour in the last few years, you heard this actual pedal and saw Kenny’s amazing playing… among guitar Gods like Eric Johnson, Kenny consistently brought the house down every night.

You can view this charity auction currently on eBay here. At the time of this posting, there were only 8 days remaining (10 bids and at $400).

The Analog Man King of Tone is a hard pedal to find. There is usually a waiting list, etc. You can read more about the KoT on Analog Man’s website here. If you’re looking for other King of Tone deals.. check out PedalNerd.com for other King of Tone listings.

Analog Man ARDX20 Dual Analog Delay

Analog Man ARDX20 Dual Analog Delay Effect PedalJust like fuzz pedals, I’ve been on a hunt for a different delay in my set up. I currently use the Line 6 DL 4, which is great, but for some reason, I have a hard time linking up with it. I think it comes down to simple ease of use or something. Presets are great and important, but I almost prefer straight knobbies or something. I don’t know. It’s a personal issue.. which I need to work on.

So far, my short list of delays is T-Rex Replica, Deluxe Memory Boy, MXR Carbon Copy.. and possibly the Analog Man ARDX20 Dual Analog Delay. I like the fact there are two bays of pots and two footswitches to control which delay mode you’re in.

Here is the official description:

The Analog Man ARDX20 Dual Analog Delay pedal is a hand-wired pedal with two selectable settings of delay time, feedback, AND delay level, not just delay time! Also has effects loop for modulation, and expression pedal jack for delay time.

Features
1. True bypass switching, the right side foot switch is effect ON/OFF.
2. Two sets of controls, not only delay time but also delay level and feedback YELLOW channel (upper 3 knobs) or RED channel (lower 3 knobs) are selected with the left foot switch.
3. Battery or normal 9V boss type power. Power jack in the center top.
4. Battery compartment on the bottom for quick and easy battery changes
5. Low power consumption, 15mA, so an alkaline battery should last about 30 hours of use.
6. Jacks are on the top of the pedal for efficient layout on pedalboards
7. Input jack on the right, unplug to disconnect battery
8. Output jack on the left

I found another gearmanndude video demo’ing the Analog Man ARDX20 Dual Analog Delay (minus the foot controller). It’s not the most exciting demo, but it shows what this pedal can do, and how the analog tone sounds.

You can pick up the Analog Man ARDX20 Dual Analog Delay for $265.00 at Fat Tone Guitars.

Analog Man Peppermint Fuzz Pedal

Analog Man Peppermint Fuzz PedalMan, I’ve been eyeballing the Analog Man Peppermint Fuzz for a long time (they also offer the ‘dark’ peppermint as well).  What I understand, the Peppermint fuzz is the same circuit as the classic fuzz face, but with high gain NOS germanium transistors.

Here is the official specs of this fuzz:

The Analog Man Peppermint Fuzz Pedal is a nasty, buzzy fuzz pedal indeed. The Peppermint Fuzz, named from the song Incense and Peppermints, can whip out some far out fuzz tones. The PEPPERMINT FUZZ is similar to a fuzzface in architecture but has specific tweeks to make it a more flexible and much crazier effect pedal.

Features
1. True bypass on / off switch, no loss of tone when off.
2. Battery disconnected when INPUT cord removed (input is on the right).
3. No Power jack or LED as these are detrimental to the ultimate fuzz in sound and battery life (you will know when this pedal is on!!!!).
4. Positive ground power. If you share a power supply with a normal pedal (negative ground), you will destroy the power supply. This means you can’t use a daisy chain or a power supply with only one output. The PedalPower2 has all isolated outputs so that one would be safe.
5. Battery should be a cheap non-alkaline general purpose battery, as found in dollar stores. These sound better than an alkaline in this pedal, and even a cheap battery will last years since there is no LED.
6. For best sound, this effect should not have any buffers or non-true bypass effects between it and the guitar. But you can try other pedals before it for various effects.
7. Volume Knob (on the left) needs no explanation. Should be able to get nice and loud to kick up your amp.
8. Fuzz knob (on the right): Best to keep it up almost all the way up for craziest sounds. Turn it down for more normal fuzzface tones.
9. BUZZ knob: the knob in the center of the pedal. This allows controlling the sound of the fuzz from weak to hard edged fuzz. You can turn it down to get a warmer looser fuzz sound which can sometimes be useful. Turning it up gets louder and harder, good for Neil Young sounds. You may find you need to turn it down a bit (CCW) at higher temperatures, and up (CW) at lower temperatures. For standard fuzzface tones turn the BUZZ knob down a bit along with the FUZZ knob.

Gearmanndude put out a great demo for the Peppermint fuzz. The first video is with single coils (strat) and the other video is with humbuckers (SG).

Video with humbuckers:

ZVex Super Hard On w/LED Boost Pedal

Today I wanted to talk about the ZVex Super Hard On boost pedal. I just recently picked up the Analog Man Beano Boost, and I’ve been really digging the clean boost action, so I wanted to take a closer look at the ZVex Super Hard On (SHO). It’s very similar in the sense that it pushs your input signal to the ceiling which gives you a great natural break up (assuming you’re pushing a tube amp). This pedal is extremely simple with only one knob.

Here is the official pedal description:

The ZVex Super Hard On w/LED Boost Pedal is a boost pedal and more. Ignite your rig to get the best tone it’s capable of. The boost pedal is so transparent no one will be able to tell you’re using a pedal. Perfect for making the most of a classic amp and guitar, because it simply makes your guitar bigger and pushes the amp harder, causing natural overload. This sound can be the solution to the ‘disappearing guitar’ effect you get sometimes on stage when you stomp on your distortion and sound weaker. When cranked, it sounds much louder than a fuzz or distortion under stage conditions.

I found another great video by gearmandude showing what it can do:

You can pick up the ZVex Super Hard On for $239.00 at Fat Tone Guitars.

Analog Man Beano Boost Pedal

I have to say the worst part of this blog for me, is looking at all of these pedals that are available, listening to different sound clips and talking to all of you about gear. It’s like a crackhead, sampling and talking about crack. Not a good situation. Well, I probably shouldn’t compare it like that, but you know what the hell I’m talking about.

I like to play guitar, I like to fiddle with the knobs on my amp, throw different pedals in line to see what comes of it just like the next guy. As you’ve been probably figuring out, I’ve been interested in a few fuzz pedals.. keeping a eye on a few analog delays, but the item that blew my mind currently was the Analog Man Sun Lion pedal that I say on J. Mascis’ board. That led me to the Analog Man Sun Face, and finally to the Analog Man Beano Boost. The Sun Lion was a combination the Beano Boost and Sun Face and is no longer in production.

Here is the official pedal description:

The Analog Man Beano Boost Pedal is a boost pedal based on the 1960s British Dallas Rangemaster, which was needed at the time to give a treble boost to the dark British amps. This allowed them to get a sound more in tune with the time, as guitars were starting to become a loud, bold, lead instrument. This effect pedal is a type of BOOSTER, not really a distortion pedal nor a clean boost- it does modify your sound quite a bit. It excites certain frequencies and pushes your amp to allow it to create rich tube distortion. The pedal colors your tone, with a crunchy overdrive, boosting certain frequencies, and warming the tone with NOS germanium transistors. It does not have a lot of compression and sustain like most OD pedals, but a more raw, open sound. This pedal has three tone settings from the tone switch- Center is a treble boost, the same as the original Dallas Rangemaster. UP is a fuller-frequency mid range boost (MID setting). Down is a LOW range, also quite a full frequency sound. The Beano Boost is spectacular into an amp that is already cranked up pretty well. It will also work well into a clean amp, but you probably need to turn the volume on the pedal up, to make the tone thicker by hitting the amp harder and making it work more.

Of course, I had to look to my favorite demo channel which of course is gearmandude. I really feel like we’re into the same style of tone, so when I found the Beano Boost vs. Sun Lion Beano Boost I was all over it. I absolutely love the ‘low’ switch clicked and vol dimed. Love it.

Anyway, after the drool ceased, I reached into my wallet, pulled out a credit card, and headed over to Fat Tone Guitars where you can pick up the Analog Man Beano Boost for $175.00. I’ll be sure to get a review of this pedal after I run it threw the circuit a bit.

Analog Man NKT Sun Face with Sundial Pedal

Last week or a bit longer ago, I posted a photo of J. Masis’ pedal board. I noticed the Analog  Man Sun Lion pedal in there (which is pretty much impossible to get other than through eBay), but it got me thinking about Analog Man stuff again. Analog Man is definitely synonymous with quality and high-end boutique pedals, also when I think Analog Man, I think mods and customization. The Sun Lion was a combination of Analog Man’s Sun Face and Beano Boost in one pedal, so I wanted to take a closer look at the Sun Face (with Sundial).

I’ve been on a pretty major fuzz kick lately searching for something in particular.. which I’m still not sure what that is. But the Analog Man NKT Sun Face seemed to be getting me closer to the direction I want to go to. It’s using the NKT-25 transistor, and I have to say the NKT type fuzzes, I’m a fan of (ie: Fulltone ’69 which Fulltone no longer makes).

Here is the official pedal description:

They are built in small gold boxes, with our own SUNFACE circuit board which was made small enough to fit in almost any enclosure. As you can see in the picture down below a bit, this is a VERY high quality board of the same type used on our other pedals. It is better quality than almost any other fuzzface clone you will find, with shielding, plated through-holes, etc to meet military specs. It also has an internal CLEAN trim pot (white knob). This trim pot acts just like turning down the VOLUME knob on your guitar, to clean up the fuzz. It can be used to preset the sound as with the volume knob rolled back a bit. It also allows easier control of the volume knob on your guitar when the white CLEAN trim pot is turned a bit. It can also be used to kill Radio Frequency Interference, which may be a problem on high gain pedals in some areas, by turning it down a hair. like all our handmade pedals, the Sunface has true bypass, so when off they do not alter your sound at all. The CLEAN trimpot will also allow the sunface to work better after a vintage style wah pedal, without having to use a foxrox wah retrofit.

Of course, I could count on gearmandude to give me the skinny on this pedal.

You can pick up the Analog Man NKT Sun Face with Sundial Pedal at Fat Tone Guitars for $260.00
