Ibanez AF2 Paul Gilbert Signature Airplane Flanger

Ibanez AF2 Paul Gilbert Signature Airplane Flanger Guitar Effects PedalFor the current pedal give-away (Electro Harmonix Deluxe Memory Boy), the entry question was what was your first pedal and if you still have it. Entries are showing some interesting responses. For me, it was a DOD FX75 Stereo Flanger (related to my desire to be Robert Smith circa 1989). And yes, I still have it.

So today, I thought it would be cool to post a flanger, and I found an interesting one. Today I want to talk about the Ibanez Paul Gilbert Airplane Flanger. Interesting item of this pedal.. Taxi/Take Off flange with pitch shifting.

Here is the official description:

Paul Gilbert’s AF2 Signature Flanger boasts two sections: one is a traditional chorus flange, while the other is the “taxi/take-off” effect (hence the Airplane moniker.) In this mode, you get Gilbert’s own crazy sound that includes shifting the pitch up and down. Controls for delay time, speed, modulation depth, and feedback let you create all sorts of cool flange effects. Includes 9V adapter.

Ibanez AF2 Paul Gilbert Signature Airplane Flanger Guitar Effects Pedal Features:

* Traditional chorus flange
* “Taxi/Take Off” flange with pitch shifting
* Cool retro look
* Rugged diecast case

I found a video by gearmanndude (he breaks the switch, but I think that was a crazy fluke happening) Maybe it was too much snake skin boot contact.. who knows.

You can pick up the Ibanez AF2 Paul Gilbert Signature Airplane Flanger for $149.99 at Musician’s Friend.

Remember, if you like reading about these pedals and seeing videos reviews from others, please subscribe to the RSS feed and get notified via email when there are new postings!

Enter to win a free Trinity pickup of your choice – Mayes Pickups

Yesterday, Dave G. sent me a email letting me know about a pickup give-away (thanks Dave!). Anyway, the pickup give-away is for Mayes Pickups, and in particular, the Trinity pickup for stratocaster or telecaster style guitars. I always like meeting new builders/developers related to guitar and bass, so I sent a email off to the owner of Mayes (Adam Mayes) to get some more info on the pickups. This is what he had to say:

The Trinity line of pickups are a 3k-ohm pickup in the Strat-style and between 3.0k- and 3.5k-ohm in the Tele-style.  They are a tri-coil passive pickup, meaning there are three independent coils in each pickup; one for the bass, mid and treble.

In its present phase, it is simply an improvement to the standard single-coil pickup.  It has lower resistance and smaller coils.  The result is greater clarity, texture of tone and sustain than a standard pickup.

It looks like he’ll be picking a winner every month. Simply send a email to freetrinityatmayespickupsdotcom with the name of the pickup of your choice in the subject line to win a Trinity. Winners will be drawn on the first of every month. Only one prize per person. Give away available for US residents only. Trinity pickups are $89.99/ea, so it’s a great opportunity to upgrade your tone.. or at least explore other pickup options.

For more information, please check out Mayes Pickups. On the site are some sound clips, etc. so it’s definitely worth a visit. Mayes Pickups also has a Facebook page.

Community Question Results “If you had the dough, what would be your next amp purchase?”

So, I’ve been thinking about buying a new head, possibly a new 2×12 cab, possibly switching up some speakers.. who knows. I’m sure you’ve been where I’m currently at. Nothing is ‘bad’ per se, but I feel like I need to shake things up a bit. I’ve been looking at Hiwatt.. or clone of Hiwatt (Reeves).. love Matchless amps. So I was curious what you guys would purchase for a next amp. I know that money is always an issue, but if it wasn’t.. what would that purchase be? Here are the results.

I thought it was interesting that Facebook fan page comments crushed the Twitter tweets as far as response numbers. That’s a first.

Pedal Line Friday – 4/23 – Chad Martin

Today’s pedal line is from Chad Martin. If you have a pedal line (doesn’t have to be in a board) for your rig, please email me a photo, bio, description of pedals and routing to pedallineateffectsbaydotcom. Every Friday I’ll showcase a pedal line submission. Make sure you include any links to your band or music page.

My name is Chad Martin.  I am 35 years old and play in my church praise band (Connect, http://www.bethelconnect.com).  We play a lot of Hillsong, Fee, Chris Tomlin, David Crowder, etc…

Pedals

1. Korg Pitchblack Tuner – visibility is never a problem with pedal
2. MXR Dynacomp – I am not a big compressor guy, mainly use this with just the amp and no other pedals on.  Occasionally use it for some intro’s.
3. Morley Power Wah – I really like the on/off button feature of the Morley wah’s, really handy when you are just trying to filter out for one specific tone.
4. Visual Sound Truetone Clean Boost – great clean volume boost, I use this pedal to help give me a little breakup in our church services without blowing up everyone’s ear drums.  Maybe the old folks can appreciate that, LOL.
5. Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive – Pro Guitar Shop Video Demo – My number one favorite pedal.  Mine has the Keeley Mod.  Great, Great Pedal.  Lots of pro’s use this pedal.  Love the clean boost feature, almost creates the sound of two different guitars.  Would not have a pedal board without one.
6. MXR Distortion 3 – classic hard rockin’ distortion pedal.
7. Snarling Dogs Blue Doo – picked this up dirt cheap on Ebay, what a steal.  This is the older model, great sounding pedal.  Great blues tones.  Really good 60’s sound, really vintage.
8. Visual Sound Route 808 – classic tubescreamer type of overdrive, basically a hopped up TS-808
9. Ernie Ball VP Jr
10. MXR Carbon Copy – don’t play a lot of delay but when I do, this is where I go.  Get that classic U2 sound in a easy to use analog pedal.

All mounted to my Pedaltrain and powered by my Onespot.

BBE Free FUZZ (pictured but not being used)

Amps/Cabinets

* Vox AC-15
* Avatar G212H Custom Cabinet with a Celestion G12H30 Anniversary and one Celestion Vintage30 (Excellent Cabinet)
* Marshall Valvestate 8100 Head
* Fender 4×12 Cabinet

Guitars

* G&L Asat Classic S – G&L Hot Rail Neck and Bridge, G&L S500 MFD in the middle

Muse Bass Tech, Shane Goodwin

I was checking out Dunlop TV on YouTube, and came across a interesting video. This is a interview with Shane Goodwin, the bass tech of Muse.  It’s cool to see the current set up of Chris Wolstenholme and how he’s getting some of the tones. It’s a pretty complex set up with multiple amps and signal splitters routing to those amps.

Guest Post – Movie Review – Fuzz: The Sound that Revolutionized the World

Fuzz: The Sound that Revolutionized the WorldThe following is a guest post by Kevin Ian Common. If you are interested in guest posting, please contact me!

Hello, Kind Readers!

I’m taking a break from my usual column to talk about a movie. “Fuzz: The Sound that Revolutionized the World” is a movie directed by Clif Taylor in which he investigates the history of effects pedals in rock–namely, the fuzz box. He interviews contemporary pedal makers from the likes of Z.Vex to Death By Audio and vanguard pedal makers like Electro Harmonix. The insight from each interview is quite telling. You see everything from highly organized assembly lines to dirty desks littered with parts and pedal enclosures.

What makes this movie interesting is not only the rich history of effects pedals, but the varied perspectives presented throughout the movie. One on hand, you have the pedal makers and their loyal fans and users who speak of uncontrollable tones and noises and their value in modern music. On the other hand, however, you have guitar techs and audio engineers who speak of the difficulty associated with boutique pedals and their unpredictability.

The nature of forums and blogs discussing effects (much like this one!) is also discussed in great details from every side. The brutal honesty of those interviewed–irregardless of their views–is refreshing. They also tackle the mob mentality of the pedal business, ripping off circuits and designs, and buzz words that are often overused and misunderstood: transparent, true bypass, and amp-like.

This movie is not only for people who love gear, but for people who simply appreciate music as well. There isn’t too much “Shop Talk” to completely lose the casual viewer. Most of the terminology isn’t too complicated either. What you discover is that these pedal makers are regular people. Sure, they might have some screws loose–much like us musicians in general!–but they started out as everyone else–with an idea. This idea grows into a business, then they are making some of the most sought-after pedals in music today.

Overall, I enjoyed this movie. I tried to remain as vague as possible because I would like everyone even remotely interested to watch the movie. It was so fantastic I watched it three times in a row!

Watching this movie may prompt me to write a few philosophy-angled columns about effects pedals. In the meantime, see this movie! Thanks for reading :)

Free Shirt Wednesday – Cordinated Cables

Today’s Free Shirt Wednesday post, is actually not a shirt.. but buttons. Remember, it doesn’t necessarily have to be a ‘shirt’. This weeks Free Shirt Wednesday is featuring Cordinated Cables “Cables that Compliment”. A couple of weeks ago Juli @cordinatedcable mentioned that she didn’t have a shirt and asked if I would accept buttons.. so I said “Sure!”.

So what’s deal with Cordinated Cables? They’re taking a unique and modern take on vintage cloth cables from the 50s and 60s. These cables are quality built, hand soldered and hand wrapped with durable yarn. The yarn is Scotch Guarded to protect against dirt and grime, etc.

They offer a couple of varieties of cables – Top Notch and Classic. Top Notch is their boutique line. Highly shielded and low capacitance. Top Notch also use Neutrik X-Series or C-Series 1/4″ plugs. Classic cables are built using industry standard cord stock and standard 1/4″ plugs.

I asked the following question to Juli – What got you into doing this?

Dan and I (Juli) have both been musicians for over 15 years. I am a graphic designer (as well as a super cable wrapper) and was really disappointed with the look and feel of a lot of the music that is available. The design of most musical equipment is dull, unaesthetic and / or marketed to boys. Being a female bassist I am not usually inclined to buy a bass cab that looks like it was forged from a monster truck. I just feel that music is an art and the tools we use to make it should look as good as they sound. Also music tends to be a very visual medium as well as auditory (Album Art / Stage Productions / Show Posters, etc.). Why not carry this visual medium over into our equipment?

Cordinated was started with this philosophy in mind. I was an avid knitter and had tons and tons of yarn lying around my house and at the same time Dan (an engineer by trade) was starting to build amps and effects pedals as a hobby. One day it all just clicked! Dan had ordered some supplies to make his own cables since he was already a soldering pro. He made me one and I wanted to make it more unique and noticeably my own. I pride myself on being unique and this new idea was something I had never seen or heard of before. Cordinated combines my love of design with my love of music. I just thought it might work, and I’ve been making these cables ever since.

Please check out Cordinated Cables on the web:

ETSY: http://cordinated.etsy.com
TWITTER: http://twitter.com/cordinatedcable
FACEBOOK: http://www.facebook.com/cordinated
MAILING LIST: http://eepurl.com/fLEx

Now, if you want to be featured on Free Shirt Wednesday.. it’s really quite simple. Send me a shirt, if it’s music related (ie: guitar builder, band, pedal builder, guitar shop, recording studio, etc) I’ll dedicate a blog post about your biz, band, etc. I’ll take a photo with my aging, slightly pudgy mug and post it. Great simple, cheap form of advertising. Still interested? Then check this page for more info

Electro Harmonix Memory Boy Deluxe Give Away!

CONTEST IS CLOSED

Wow! I’m super excited with this give away. I know a lot of people are wanting this pedal, and this is your chance to own it for FREE!

I was able to talk with Brad at Tone Factor to see if he would be interested in sponsoring another give away (He put up the Mojo Hand Sugar Baby last Fall and that was a great give away as well). I was pleased to hear that he was into it. I asked what pedal he would like to give up for the pedal give away, and the Electro Harmonix Deluxe Memory Boy came up, so here we go!

Here is the official description of the Electro Harmonix Delux Memory Boy:

The Deluxe Memory Boy is the newest member of the iconic Memory Man family. It carries on the family tradition with new performance aspects that give it unique power and metronomic definition.

Quality IC’s deliver warm and organic tones while the new Tap tempo allows you to always be in perfect sync with the groove. Choose from five note divisions for metronomic variance while staying in sync and always on the mark. The added EFX loop integrates your pedals to follow the groove with tonal dexterity .Use an expression pedal to control your modulations for performance flexibility. The Deluxe Memory Boy is slick, smart and always on time.

Features:

Pure analog IC’s
Tap Tempo with footswitch control

I would like to send a special ‘Thank You” to Brad at Tone Factor for providing another item. If you have a chance, please check out Tone Factor and see what they have to offer! If you’re not familiar with Tone Factor, here is some information:

I’ll email the 3 finalists and the first one out of the 3 that emails me back will be the winner.You must enter a ‘valid’ email address, bounce back emails will be rejected. One entry per person. After the winner has been notified and all is good (I’ve retrieved mailing address, etc), I’ll coordinate with Brad at Tone Factor to get the pedal shipped to the winner.

Remember to also retweet this post and help spread the word! If we continue to have success with these give-aways, I’ll be able to offer more and more… and we all love free stuff right?
