Rick Savage – Def Leppard – Pedal Line

A few days ago I saw SourceAudio tweet a link about a video they posted. This video was a interview with Aidan Mullen who is the bass tech for Rick Savage of Def Leppard. I love these videos to see some the gear the big guys are using and hearing input from their techs. This video focuses on the Source Audio Bass Distortion Pedal, but there was s glimpse of Rick’s pedal tray:

Rick Savage - Def Leppard - Pedal LineThe set up is pretty simple (I’m sure there is some serious stuff in regards to rack gear). Items on the pedal tray: Source Audio Bass Distortion Pro, Line 6 DL4 Delay Modeler and SansAmp Bass Drive DI.

Pedal Line Friday – 7/15 – Gary Coday

Today’s pedal line is from Gary Coday. If you have a pedal line (doesn’t have to be in a board) for your rig, please email me a photo, bio, description of pedals and routing to pedallineateffectsbaydotcom. Every Friday I’ll showcase a pedal line submission. Make sure you include any links to your band or music page.

Pedal Line Friday - 7/15 - Gary CodayHello, here is my humble submission for your pedal line Friday. This is my setup that I use at my church. I am the bass player for the praise team at Lebanon Family Church in Lebanon, Mo. We play contemporary music including Planetshakers, Hillsong, Generation Unleashed just to name a few.

I start out with a Ernie Ball VPJR 6181 volume pedal and a Korg DTR-1000 hooked to the tuner out jack of the volume pedal.
Next is a Boss OBD-3 Bass Overdrive Pedal.
Next is a Boss DD-3 Delay Pedal.
Next is a SansAmp Programmable Bass Driver DI.
From there I go into the house system.
I power my pedals with a 1spot AC adapter which seems to work pretty well.

If I am playing out I go into an Ampeg B-2RE amp and two Ampeg 4-10 cabinets.

Thanks,
Gary Coday

Walter Gervers – Foals – Pedals

Walter Gervers - FoalsSeems like a few people know that I’m a fan of Foals. I’ve broken down Yannis Philippakis and Jimmy Smith‘s boards in the past. Recently, I’ve a had a few requests regarding the bass player, Walter Gervers, set up.  When I think of Foals, I think about the carefully interwoven guitar lines of Yannis and Jimmy. Also think of the passive-aggressive style vocals, but I also think of the very solid and groove locked rhythm section of Walter of bass and Jack Bevan on drums. Solid!

I had a very hard time finding photos of the pedals Walter uses though, but I was able to find one older shot, which I think should be semi-accurate today. If you have any info, please let me know. Walter’s set up is basic, but sounds great. He primarily uses three pedals on the floor, but I’ve read in several places that he uses a SansAmp (probably a ParaDriver) *.

Boss GE-7 Equalizer
T-Rex Bass Juice
Tech 21 SansAmp ParaDriver *
Boss TU-2 Tuner

Walter Gervers - Foals - PedalsReading various interviews, I was surprised how Walter focused on his limitations and expressed his desire to increase his ability to help with the band. I now like him even more. Great to read/see humble musicians that are making music, but willing to admit they’re not awesome. I dig that.

Tech 21 SansAmp 3-Channel Programmable Bass Driver DI

Tech 21 SansAmp 3-Channel Programmable Bass Driver DIFridays’ Pedal Line Friday mentioned a Tech 21 SansAmp 3-Channel Programmable Bass Driver DI. Programmable DI? This seems pretty interesting, so I had to look further. All the bass players I’ve played with (with the exception of one) dreaded the DI set up, which I can understand, but I’m wondering if something like this would make things a lot better.

Here is the official description:

The Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI is a 3-channel, programmable rig-in-a-box similar to the TRI-A.C. for guitar, but made for bassists. The all-analog circuitry features drive, bass, treble, presence, blend, and level controls. Digital only in its programmability, you just tweak the knobs until you find a tone, double-tap on a footswitch, and it’s saved in that channel. Works great on stage or in the studio. Rugged all-metal construction. Operates via a 9V alkaline battery, phantom power, or the optional Tech 21 DC2 power supply. 7.25″L x 5″W x 2″H. 25 oz.

I found this video by elninodelamuerte where he demos some of the settings.

You can pick up the Tech 21 SansAmp 3-Channel Programmable Bass Driver DI for $209.00 at Musician’s Friend.

Tech 21 VT Bass SansAmp Character Series Bass Pedal

Tech 21 VT Bass SansAmp Character Series Bass PedalHello all, once again, I’ve been forgetting about the bass players out there. So to make up for that this morning, I’m going to talk about the Tech 21 Bass SansAmp Character Series Bass Pedal. I’ve talked abut SansAmp in the past, and their stuff is quite impressive, so I was expecting the same level here with this pedal.

Here is the official description of this pedal:

The Tech 21 VT Bass SansAmp Character Series Bass Pedal delivers the sound of a tower of power pumping through a stack of 10″ speakers. The VT Bass is just the bass pedal for bass players who demand to be heard and want legendary bass tone. From chunky funk with the ubiquitous flip-top to the higher-gain growl of indie rock, this Tech 21 bass effects pedal has range to spare. Still need more? Lean on the Character control for the fat, distorted sound of Crimson and King s X—it all sounds massive. From clean SVT thump to dirty, earth-quaking crunch, with the VT Bass pedal you just dial it in.

Each effects pedal in the Tech 21 Character Series, including the VT Bass Pedal, is loaded with tonal DNA for a specific style of guitar amplifier. By simply twisting a few knobs, you can build those sought-after tones or hot-rod your own. From rare vintage classics to roaring modern icons, every variation is delivered in the distinctive voicing of that amp style. The intuitive amp-like controls on Tech 21 Character Series pedals let you get your hands dirty from the get-go while you explore decades of blistering tones.

Being a genuine SansAmp, each Tech 21 Character Series pedal is way more than a stompbox. Each pedal can be used as a stand-alone pre-amp to drive a power amp, a studio mixer, or a PA system, with the rich SansAmp cabinet emulation that sounds huge – even straight into a computer soundcard. Or plug the Tech 21 VT Bass SansAmp Character Series Bass Pedal into your bass guitar amp to take your tone on the road.

I also found a nice demo by Burgerman666:

You can pick up the Tech 21 VT Bass SansAmp Character Series Bass Pedal for $149.00 at Musician’s Friend.

Tech 21 SansAmp Character Series Oxford Distortion

Today, I wanted to talk about the Tech 21 SansAmp Character Series Oxford Distortion pedal. I heard a few people talking about this, so I wanted to take a closer look. The Tech 21 Sans Amp takes some of the characteristics of the classic Orange amp and dropped that in a pedal. There is a ‘speaker emulation’ button which is meant to take some of the high end off of the tone.

Here is the official description:

Experience T-rextacy with the greasy grit of ’70s London glam, or take it deeper and darker into paranoid vintage metal grind. Dime the gain to experience the sludgelicious roar of contemporary stoner rock pumping through a Vintage 30-style 4×12 cab. From sweet cleans to crushing distortion, the Oxford is one juicy pedal.

The level and drive controls work like a traditional, well-equipped amp. Low, mid, and high are active, providing a wider array of tonal possibilities. The character knob is a continuously-variable control that moves seamlessly between different model voicings, covering vintage, high-gain and face-melting lead tones. The character and mid controls, and the speaker emulations, are all engineered to personify the specific amplifier traits and speakers associated with each amplifier type.

The SansAmp technology captures the warm, rich, natural tones of the most sought-after tube amplifiers. Within the parameters of each model’s particular design, the controls provide you with access to specific tone-shaping characteristics within the tube amplifier sound spectrum.

SansAmp products are designed to work seamlessly in both recording and stage environments. They can be used with almost any instrument, for any music style, and for multiple applications. Record directly to tape and disc or enhance previously recorded tracks. For live performances, they can drive a power amp and speakers, augment your existing amplifier set-up, or run directly into the mixer of a PA system.

I found this great video showing what this pedal does (including what it can do for bass) by bubu245

I also found another video from premeireguitar where they visited the Tech 21 booth at NAMM 2010. They go into more detail on this pedal along with their other pedals.

You can pick up the Tech 21 SansAmp Character Series Oxford Distortion for $189.00 at Musician’s Friend.
