Foo Fighters Trailer

Foo Fighter DocumentaryI never been a super Foo Fighters fan, but I definitely appreciate what they do. I really like Dave Grohl – especially his attitude, sense of humor and his talent. It’s quite refreshing to see a ‘rock star’ not be all serious all the time.

A friend of mine just sent me a link showing the upcoming Foo Fighters’ movie/documentary titled “Back and Forth”. This movie be shown in over 80 cities across the US. If you’re wanting to check this movie out, you can vote for your city here: http://foofighters.cinedigm.com/

The movie was directed by James Moll and documents the Foo Fighters’ 16 year history, as well as show behind the scenes footage of the the group’s seventh album – Wasting Light.  Apparently, this album is recorded in a garage — I like it already. The album is also produced by Butch Vig.

Below is the official Foo Fighters Documentary submitted by foofighters:

Any of you Foo Fighters fans? If so.. what are your thoughts about the upcoming documentary??

Cry Baby – The pedal that rocks the world

Cry Baby - The pedal that rocks the worldA friend of mine just let me know the crybabydoc.com has four 15 minute sections (not sure if it’s the entire movie or not) available. I just got done watching all four parts, and they were great. The official release date is 3/11, but if you have some time, head over to crybabydoc.com and check out the parts. I thought it was very interesting and cool to hear some of the stories related to the wah.

I started using a wah about a year ago (never liked it before.. and never had much interest in it). I started playing a Fulltone Clyde Standard Wah (white) and later got a Dunlop GCB-95 Crybaby off of eBay (DOA) which I wanted to breathe life into and have fun with mods. I added a ICAR Taper pot, made it true bypass, added a LED and a Red Fasel inductor in there. I think it sounds great and I’m definitely interested in other wahs now (ie: Teese picture wah, Dunlop 535Q, Fulltone Clyde Deluxe, etc).

I pretty much use wah for lead stuff, but also for creating some nasty sounds. What wahs are you guys using? How are you using them, etc? Comment below!

Fuzz: The Sound That Changed the World (my take)

Fuzz: The Sound that Revolutionized the WorldOkay, I know that Kevin Ian Common just did a guest review on “Fuzz: The Sound That Changed the World“, but I finally got to watch it in its entirety last night. And since it’s about guitars/effects… I just felt like I needed to add my two cents into.

First, I wanted to say that I’ve been fascinated with the idea of pedal building. I’ve mentioned that in previous posts. I have great respect for the people that make pedals, that design circuits, and can actually make a business building, modifying and selling these things. It’s a rough world out there, and it definitely takes a special breed.

Going into this movie/documentary, I was expecting a ‘history lesson’ on the fuzz pedal. There actually is some good information and important historic points discussed in the film, but what I really got excited about was seeing what types of people are building these pedals today. A view into their personalities, and getting a view of how people can think in terms of electronics.. while maintaining a understanding of music, and musical needs and purpose.

Last year I watched, “Les Paul: Chasing Sound” and I was so intrigued of how a person can be talented (artistic) and still have the part of the brain to design/build/tinker. It seems rare to me to find individuals that are left/right brained.. and balanced on both sides. I felt that this doc really exposes those individuals.

I was also inspired to see how the “art” was brought into electronics. This could be cosmetic (ala ZVex) or crazy circuits or circuit bending (ala ZVex or Death By Audio, etc) for the need to make the sound the true voice of  the signal, and the guitar plays a part of it. Interesting concept.

If you’re remotely interested in building or modifying pedals, this is a great film. If you’re a musician and are interested to see what drives pedal development and fuels these crazy people to make more pedals.. again, this is a great movie to watch.

It Might Get Loud – Show Dates Announced!

itmightgetloud

I was reading the blog at Never Too Late Guitars, and I saw he posted a update about release dates, and I had to blog about this as well.

First of all, if you’re not familiar with this movie, it’s a documenary project where they interview three great guitarists (The Edge, Jimmy Page and Jack White).  To me, they couldn’t find three more different musicians to interview. They vary on how they influence other musicians, their philosophies about guitar and sound in general and their general styles of contemporary ‘rock’ music. I think it’s a great blend, and I’m very interested to see what they have to say.

Beyond just interviewing the three guitarists, they’ll be joining each other face to face to “talk shop” and maybe make some music. When you hear the phrase “Wouldn’t it be cool to be a fly on the wall in that room”.. well with this movie you can. Every musician I know that knows about this movie is super excited

It Might Get Loud

I’m a big fan of documentaries, specifically music related documentaries. Many times I’ve gotten sucked in to Ovation or the Doc Channel watching the history of music or musicians. I often think it’s inspiring as a musician to see other musicians work their magic almost effortlessly.  I also think it’s inspiring to see them as human as well, with their own problems and troubles.

A friend of mine sent me this YouTube clip thinking I would like it. And this is a understatement. I cannot wait for this movie to come out. It is called “It Might Get Loud” and it features three musicians (The Edge, Jimmy Page and Jack White). I thought it was great to take three totally different guitarists and get them into a room together.

I’m especially curious to hear what the Edge has to say about things, since he is the effects master!

Below is the trailer for the movie. Let me know what you think!
