Rig Rundown – Nels Cline (Wilco Tour)

Rig Rundown - Nels Cline (Wilco Tour)Today I was super stoked to see a new Rig Rundown featuring Nels Cline of Wilco on PremiereGuitar. I’ve been a fan of Nels from a distance for years, but never really got to learn about his gear until this blog. Coincidentally, I did a pedal board breakdown of his board a while back (you can read it here – Nels Cline – Wilco – Pedal Board), but this video is fantastic. Nels really goes into detail about his guitars, amp and his effects. I really like it when artists go into ‘why’ they like a particular pedal. That kind of insight is very useful when looking at new pedals to purchase or understanding issues you might be having with your current pedals.

Here is the video by PremiereGuitar:

Here is the breakdown of pedals of his main guitar board:

2012 Klon at NAMM

2012 Klon at NAMMToday I saw Caroline Guitar Company post a photo of the new Klon Overdrive at NAMM 2012. The Klon Centaur has reached mythical proportions (in desire and in price) over the last years. You definitely can spend up to $1500+ for original ‘gold’ Klon, etc. Last year, there has been talk about Bill Finnegan getting back into building Klons again, and there was a overdrive shootout video I posted a while back that had the new Klon (but in a card board box – weird right?). So, for 2012, there has been a lot of people interested in the new Klon. At NAMM, Bill Finnegan was there with his prototype Klon and here is the only video I found so far.

Video posted by natesousa:

Personally, I had a hard time hearing the pedal in this video, and hoping there will be more videos coming out…

Nels Cline – Wilco – Pedal Board

Over on Premier Guitars Facebook page, they posted some fresh shots of Nels Cline’s pedalboard while on tour with Wilco. It’s nice to see a recent photo of his pedals. There were two unidentified pedals there.. so if you can help ID them, please comment below (Pedals have been identified!).

Nels mentioned he feels awkward talking about his pedals on his website. Here is the relevant snippet:

OK, people. You all seem fixated, I dare say HYPNOTIZED, by all my damn effects boxes. So here you go: all about my NEW PEDAL BOARD, being used with Wilco and anything else I can find to drag all 75 pounds of it (including swanky road case) to! I confess that it is a bit irritating to me that people seem so fixated on HOW MANY pedals I have. This is because there seems to be something double-edged about it: a kind of fascination mixed with feelings of skepticism and/or disgust, as though it’s somehow amazing that I can keep track of it all and at the same time I must be some kind of charlatan to NEED so many pedals! Well, what can I say?

Nels has two boards. The first is his primary guitar pedal board and the second is his ‘ambient/noise’ board.

Joe Perry’s 2011 Guitar Rig with Trace Foster

A few weeks ago I came across a video by pigtronix which has Trace Foster (Joe Perry’s guitar tech) talking about Joe’s 2011 touring rig for Aerosmith. I’ve showcased Joe Perry’s pedals in the past, but it looks like he’s made some changes from those earlier posts. I think the only thing that remains from the older pedal shots is his classic gold Klon Centaur.

Here is the video by pigtronix:

Here is the break down of pedals.

John Mayer Pedal Line Breakdown

John Mayer is another guitar player that I’m not a big fan of, but I definitely respect his guitar tone and quality of play. This guy can really lay down some awesome guitar. I remember catching a few live performances on TV that really impressed me, so when I came across this Premier Guitar Rig Rundown I wanted to share this. It’s a little old (9/8/10), but I would assume some of the pedals are still in the line up.. if not all of them.

This video really shows what’s all involved with his guitar tone. Premier Guitar’s Rebecca Dirks interviews Rene Martinez (guitar tech for Stevie Ray Vaughn, Prince, Mick Jones). Video submitted by PremierGuitar

As you notice, Rene doesn’t go into detail about the pedals except for the fact that they’re using a Bradshaw switching system.. and that they’re on in the trays. I wish he would have talk about a few of them – ie: the Roger Linn pedals, etc. I was able to get good screen snaps off all the pedals and was able to identify all of them. Here is the breakdown of pedals below.

Keith Urban Pedal Breakdown

I’ve been curious about this for a bit, so it was cool to see a Rig Rundown by Premier Guitar this morning. I’m not the biggest fan of Keith Urban, but there is no question that guy plays some mean guitar.. and his guitar tone is frickin’ good. I’ve heard of him playing through various pieces of sweet gear, but never really got to see the magic in the back in regards to his effects.  He uses a switching system on stage, so you never get a glimpse of the pedals. I’ve read a few blogs and forums explaining the set up, but I was psyched for the official full run down.

Premiere Guitar interviewed Chris Miller (guitar tech of Keith Urban) and provided a very thorough explanation of effects and amps used.

Here is the video by PremierGuitar:

Here is the break down of the various trays:

Keith Urban - Pedal Tray 1Tray 1:

Demeter COMP-1 Opto Compulator
Wampler Ego Compressor
Analogman Juicer Compressor
Boss Graphic Equalizer GE-7
Boss Compressor/Sustainer CS-2

Keith Urban - Pedal Tray 3Tray 3:

XTS Precision Overdrive
MXR GT-OD Overdrive M-193
MXR Bass Octave deluxe M-288

Misc:

He runs a Wampler Pinnacle Distortion with his Marshall heads (placed with the heads, not with the pedal trays).

Foals Foals Foals

If you’ve been following me on Twitter or paying attention to this site, you may have noticed that I’m a fan of Foals from Oxford, England. I had a chance to seem them last year in Chicago (which was an amazing show), and recently I just saw them in Portland. A few of you asked how I thought that show was, and I figured it might make for a somewhat interesting post.

Foals - 4/12 - Wonderland Ballroom PortlandTo me the highlight was not the show itself but the journey. Not sure how many of you readers are with a significant other AND have kids, but I fall in that bracket. I’m happily married with two kids. What that simply translates to… I rarely spend quality time with my wife without kids clammering all over us. My wife really got into Foals, which has been fun. I mean I play her stuff all the time, but she got this band immediately and is super into them. So when I heard that Foals were playing Portland, I thought it would be super fun to hang with the wife and make a road trip to Portland.

Some thought we were crazy to drive 9 hours one way for a show… yeah.. 9 hours one way. Sucks to live in the middle of nowhere, but I thought the journey would be fun. I was right. Beef jerky, smart ass comments and loud music the whole way. It was a blast!

The show was at the Wonder Ballroom. I saw Mogwai there a few years ago, and I remember it was a good venue. The opening bands.. in my opinion… sucked pretty severely. Maybe it just wasn’t a good fit. Not sure. Foals came out and Jimmy had issues with his guitar on the first song. Equipment issues seems to be a slight issue with both Yannis and Jimmy, but what got me, was the monitor mix sound guy. He would just leave, and you could see Yannis getting pissed when he was trying to dial in the stage mix and looking for the mix guy, and no one was there. You could tell, that the mood was getting tense, and that was apparent in the performance. All I kept thinking – Thanks monitor man for fucking up this show. Thank you very much.

Foals - 4/12 - Wonderland Ballroom PortlandFoals put on a great show even through the issues. I’m sure many many people in the audience were oblivious with the situation, but I definitely could relate (on a small level) of how that feels, and that can make a performance pretty sour from the group’s point of view. The positives were high and many as well. When things were locking it, it was unbelievable. I’m a sucker for guitar interplay and they have that in spades. The set list was similar to the show in Chicago, and the energy / response they were able to create from the audience is intense.

Since this is a effects blog I want to see if anything has changed. In Chicago, I had the opportunity to see the boards up close and talk with Yannis. This time, not so lucky, but I was able to take a photo of Yannis’ board from pretty close. Overall, it looks the same, but there is one unidentified pedal in there, maybe you can help ID it. He was definitely using it a lot and I had the impression it was a OD of some sort, based on when it was hit and what I was hearing, but I’m not sure.

Foals - 4/12 - Wonderland Ballroom Portland - Pedal Board

What I’m able to see the following on this board shot:

Boss TU2 Tuner
Boss RV-5 Reverb
Boss DD-3 Delay
Strymon blueSky Reverberator
Telenordia TK-23 Kompressor (not shown)
Empress Super Delay
Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2+

The Unknown Pedal appears to be blue. 2 footswitches. 5 knobs and 2 toggle switches. This is where the Klon Centaur was in the past, but couldn’t see if the Klon was on the other side of it. I’ve also seen the EHX Nano Grail in the position as well, I doubt it’s a reverb.. but maybe.

UPDATE:
The unknown pedal was a Strymon blueSky Reverberator pedal, thanks Alex! Additionally, I had this photo sent to me:

Bryce Dessner – The National – Pedalboard

Bryce Dessner - The NationalA while back I posted “Any guitarists out there that you’d like to see on EffectsBay with their board broken down?”. There were some great artists listed there, and I’ve been slowly chipping away at this list. Jay Wallsten suggested The National. I personally really dig The National. I get suckered in with baritone vocals.. every time. I have a few albums.. Boxer, Alligator and High Violet.. and dig all of them. I didn’t know much about the gear or the musicians, so this I felt was a great opportunity to learn more about a band I already like. This breakdown will focus on Bryce Dessner the primary guitarist of The National.

I found various pieces of information spanning from 2006 to 2010. Overall, his pedal gear has remained somewhat consistent. I came across this nice article from Guitar Player Magazine article that was originally published in 2006. In this article, he mentions his line up to be the following:

Pro Co Rat -> Klon Centaur (Gold) -> DigiTech Whammy -> Boss DD-5 ->  Boss FV-50H Volume Pedal -> Line 6 DL4 Delay

In 2009 in a Harmony Central thread, there is a photo which shows an additional Delay  (EHX Memory Man) and the Whammy fell off the line:

Bryce Dessner - The National - Pedalboard

Boss TU-2 -> Boss DD-5 -> Pro Co Rat -> Klon Centaur (Gold) -> Electro-Harmonix Memory Man (Deluxe Echo/Chorus/Vibrato)-> Line 6 DL4 Delay -> Boss FV-50H Volume Pedal

Finally, I found a photo from May 2010 where you can see the addition of a Electro-Harmonix Micro POG and a Earnie Ball Volume Pedal JR (replacing the Boss VF-50H).

Ultimate Overdrive Pedal Shootout & New Klon Premier

Ultimate Overdrive Pedal Shootout & New Klon Premier I came across this fantastic video by Tippon (Taylor Barefoot and David Fisher) where they shot a overdrive shootout where Taylor plays 35 overdrives. I think to take something like this on is extremely difficult to say the least, but I appreciate how they went about it. Same guitar (Linhof Tele), same amp (Two-Rock Amplifier), same mics.. and same riffs. I also like the fact that he played a simple riff, a more complex chord riff and a lead line. All the pedals started with settings at 12o’clock and were adjusted to compliment the effect.

Each clip is short (approximately 30-40 seconds) but you get to understand the base tone each pedal has. Granted, that we’re missing out on the specific characteristics and general application, but to include that, would take days of shooting. I think this video is a great reference point if you’re starting your search for a new overdrive pedal. The video is long (35 minutes), but well worth the length. If you want to get right to a particular pedal, I created a list below with their times to make it a little easier to compare overdrives.

Also, one really cool thing about the video, they got in touch with Bill Finnegan (creator of the Klon Centaur) and he let them include a Klon Overdrive that is still in production and planned for release in the not-so-distant future.

Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo Pedalboard

One of my favorite guitarists out there is Lee Ranaldo from Sonic Youth. I had an opportunity to meet him backstage a few years ago to check out his gear and talk shop.. and it was great experience. It was before this blog, I wish I go back in time and take some quality photos and ask some great questions instead of “You remember that time.. when you were in Sonic Youth? That was awesome…”

Anyway, I don’t have a time machine, but I do have the power of the interweb and the ability to query, so I bring you Lee Ranaldo’s latest set up. A ton of info is available on Sonic Youth’s website, they describe equipment in great detail and is an incredible resource.

This is his set up as of 2009. Haven’t found much info on 2010, but I’m guess it’ll still be close.

He has two pedalboards with one single effect on a mic stand.

Pedalboard #1

Ernie Ball VP JR. (for the Ring Modulator)
Electro-Harmonix MicroSynth (old version)

Digitech PDS 1002 two second Digital Delay
Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2+
Custom Line Selector (In/Out/Send/Receive) used for Antenna Box

Additionally he uses a custom delay box called the Antenna box that is mounted to the mic stand. The Antenna Box was custom built by Matt Zivich

Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo Pedalboard - Antenna BoxThis is mainly used for the song Antenna, but might be used for other infinite repeat delay sounds. It looks like he can route his signal from the ring modulation side into the delay and control repeat, time and volume, and then punch it out of his line with the custom selector.

For those of you that aren’t familiar with Antenna, check out this video where you can see the Antenna box in action. Video was submitted by ZeRapaz:
