Ok, so this price may finally push me over the edge to pick up the MXR Carbon Copy (I mentioned I still don’t own one here). Not sure yet. I think I need to look at the GuitarSquid “should I buy gear” flow chart. Either way, it’s a good deal for someone. This morning I wanted to do some research on the top best selling delay pedals. For this I thought I would pick three merchants that sell delay pedals and sort by Best Selling to get a list. I was confident that I would see some of the basic names, but I was surprised by some of the results. For each merchant I took their Top 10 Best Selling Delay Pedals and listed them below. I want to stress that these are the top *best selling* not necessarily the top *best* delays. Some of these are probably best selling due to price vs. tone and capability. Either way it’s interesting to see what people are buying.

I was expecting to see the Boss DD-3 and DD-7 to be in the lists, but I was surprised to not see Electro-Harmonix all over these lists. Likewise, I was surprised to see the Fulltone tape delay in there. Additionally, some of the other pedals (DeltaLab, Behringer and Rogeu) might need a closer look, since they are in these lists. I would say the MXR Carbon Copy is clearly the winner for best selling delay. Why don’t I own one???? Hmmm, I better get on it.

Once again, I’m shopping for a delay pedal. I’m thinking I want something cheap, easy and versatile to mess with some ideas I have currently. Maybe upgrading to my ‘dream’ delay if this is a direction I want to pursue (like a T-Rex Replica or Empress, etc). But for now, I want something simple, quick and easy.

The one thing that is fun with Pedal Line Fridays, is to see what others are using. Every guitarist is always eyeballing the other dude’s rig to see what they have going on… and Pedal Line Friday a good way to get your weekly fix. I bring that up, because three pedals seem to come up often when we talk delays. There is often a MXR M-169 Carbon Copy, Boss DD-3/DD-6/DD-7 or some type of Memory Man (Memory Boy, Toy, Deluxe, Hazarai, etc).

A few months ago, I wrote a community question asking what the best delay pedal is out there today. There were tons of responses and great suggestions on what people thought about a great delay pedal. Yesterday, @BooDooPerson let me know (via Twitter) about a great video his friend shot at Taylor Barefoot’s studio. This video is a great little boutique delay shootout of some awesome pedals. Two different riffs, with similar settings. Same guitar (1959 Strat) same amp, same mic so you can really hear the differences.

Just like fuzz pedals, I’ve been on a hunt for a different delay in my set up. I currently use the Line 6 DL 4, which is great, but for some reason, I have a hard time linking up with it. I think it comes down to simple ease of use or something. Presets are great and important, but I almost prefer straight knobbies or something. I don’t know. It’s a personal issue.. which I need to work on.

So far, my short list of delays is T-Rex Replica, Deluxe Memory Boy, MXR Carbon Copy.. and possibly the Analog Man ARDX20 Dual Analog Delay. I like the fact there are two bays of pots and two footswitches to control which delay mode you’re in.

The Analog Man ARDX20 Dual Analog Delay pedal is a hand-wired pedal with two selectable settings of delay time, feedback, AND delay level, not just delay time! Also has effects loop for modulation, and expression pedal jack for delay time.

I know I’ve talked about the MXR Carbon Copy Analog delay in the past, and I’ll probably talk about it again in the future. There is no denying that this pedal is showing up on many of the Pedal Line Friday submissions, and there is a good reason why. It’s a great pedal for the price!

While on YouTube this morning, I found another interesting video showing what the MXR Carbon Copy can do. This particular video is by guitarworld and thoroughly goes through it’s features so I had to post this.

As you can see this pedal is a nice delay. I actually own one of the older vintage green MXR analog delays from the 80s and this seems to be a large improvement over that (improved by longer delay, mod switch and cleaner signal).
