Great deal on the Way Huge Aqua Puss MkII Analog Delay at Amazon

Great deal on the Way Huge Aqua Puss MkII Analog Delay at AmazonThis is a pretty good one! Today I found the Way Huge Aqua Puss MkII Analog Delay on sale. This pedal lists for $254.61 and is usually available for $150, but is on sale for only $119.99 at Amazon. That’s $30 off the going rate.. not a bad deal at all on a great sounding delay. The Way Huge Aqua Puss MkII will give you 20ms delay to 300ms. For those of you not familiar with analog vs. digital sounds. Analog delays tend to sound dark and have a bit of modulation in the trailing signal, where a digital delay can have perfect repeats.

When I think of Way Huge Aqua Puss, the musician that comes to mind is John Mayer (though he plays with the original vintage Aqua Puss). For more information, you can view John Mayer’s Pedal Line Breakdown.

Here is a good pedal demo of the Aqua Puss in action by Fuzzbot71:

Again, the Way Huge Aqua Puss MkII Analog Delay is on sale for only $119.99 at Amazon. At the time of this posting there were only 4 left in stock. When the number gets to 1 or 2 the price sometimes increases, so if you want it… best to jump on it.

Electro-Harmonix Ravish Sitar Japanese Demo

Electro-Harmonix Ravish Sitar Japanese DemoI recently saw a demo of the Electro-Harmonix Ravish Sitar by WeRock TV in Japan. I thought this demo was pretty cool, they demonstrated some classic/traditional Sitar sounds but also included an atmospheric vibe as well. Also, the demo includes tab, so those of you that are thinking of getting a sitar intro but have no idea on what is a good scale, etc., this might be quite handy.

The Electro-Harmonix Ravish Sitar is definitely a ‘hot’ pedal in 2011/2012. Seems to have a lot of interest. Any of you that own it currently, would love to hear your thoughts and opinions. My biggest question about this pedal, are there uses for it beyond the sitar simulation? The demo below seems to have answered that question in the 3rd piece where it sounds very keyboard-like. I think it would be cool to hear some interesting applications of this pedal.

Currently, there is a bundle deal on the Electro-Harmonix Ravish Sitar at Amazon, for $239.25 you get the Ravish Sitar plus 2 free Struckture 6″ patch cables, 1 10′ Struckture instrument cable and 1 18.6′ instrument cable. Normally the Ravish by itself if $239.25, so to get some bonus items is a nice plus!

Nice Deal on the ProCo RAT2 at Amazon

Nice Deal on the ProCo Rat2 at AmazonThis morning I came across a nice deal on the legendary ProCo RAT2 at Amazon. We’ve heard this pedal on countless recordings and performances. This pedal can be used a light overdrive style distortion or super buzzy and harsh that might be the perfect effect you’re looking for. When I think of ProCo RAT2 I also think of 80s style distortion, but don’t let me pigeonhole this, you definitely can get other tonal textures from this. The ProCo RAT2 lists for $134.49 and is usually available for $95.00, but is currently on sale for $77.44 at Amazon. That’s $17.56 off what you usually see them for, not a bad deal at all. The ProCo RAT2 also ships with FREE super saver shipping as well.

At the time of this post there were 20 units in stock at this price. When that count goes down to 2-3, the price usually bounces up. So if you’re interested in a new dirt box on the board, you might want to jump on this.

I found this video by caracoles01 showing some of the settings/sounds of the ProCo RAT2.

Again, the ProCo RAT2 is on sale for only $77.44 at Amazon.com

Source Audio Programmable EQ – Bass Guitar Demo

Source Audio Programmable EQ - Bass Guitar DemoA while back I was on the look out for a small footprint EQ pedal for my Schecter Ultra VI guitar and ended up purchasing the 6 band MXR EQ, but after checking out Source Audio’s Programmable EQ, I’m thinking I purchased the wrong unit. The Source Audio Programmable EQ is housed in a single unit aluminum enclosure and allows you to store presets. You can store 4 presents, and the EQ is a 8 band EQ ranging from 62Hz to 8kHz. It is equipped with MIDI in and has a cool LED/knob for output. The more gain (up to 18dB) the brighter the knob lights up.

There is a very cool auto-scroll mode that will scroll through the presets giving a tremolo or sequencer like effect. Basically scrolls through each preset, you can adjust this sweep. You can pick up the Source Audio Programmable EQ for only $149.00 at Amazon.

Now, here is a great video showing Will Cady of Source Audio showing the various EQ settings that can be achieved with the Source Audio Programmable EQ. The auto-scroll feature is pretty cool and interesting. He also demonstrates how the EQ can be used to overdrive the amp.

As you can see and hear, it’s a pretty cool EQ unit. For more information about Source Audio, please check out their website!

Marshall Guv’nor Repair

Recently a friend of mine was having trouble with his older Marshall Guv’nor pedal (black enclosure). I wanted to document this repair, in case any others run into this problem. The early symptoms was shorting out. Kicking it would sometimes get it back to playing, but obviously that’s not an ideal solution. The first possible suspect was with the DC power jack. It was loose, but noticed that 2 out of the 3 jacks were missing their mounting nuts causing the top PCB (which connects the pots to the main PCB) to be loose.

I took the pedal apart and inspected the solder connection of the power jack and it looked solid. Thinking this would be as simple as finding compatible nuts and secure that board, I tightened the connections and reassembled the pedal enclosure. First test, sounded great until we kicked the pedal while it was engaged and sure enough, the pedal cut out. So at this point it’s most likely not a power issue. I started tapping wires and eventually came back to the input and output jacks. Wiggling the input and output plugs I could make the pedal short out. The solder connections for the jacks were fine and I saw no motion on the jack itself but there was a hair of wiggle room within the jack itself.

Doing a little Googling, I did see mention of those jacks going bad and this pedal has definitely seen some action throughout the years. I have plenty of Switchcraft jacks laying around, but noticed these are the 9 pin low profile jacks. I’m left with a couple of options at this point. If I go the Switchcraft route I would need to do a re-house since those jacks do not fit in that area at all, plus I would need to really understand what the signal path is all about. I opted to find replacement jacks.

Marshall Guv'nor Jack ViewI ended up buying Fender Jack Phone Stereo 6.5mm Part #0059922000. I saw that they were built a little tougher and the dimensions matched the originals. These jacks are a little pricey though – coming in at $7.95ea. I bought mine at Darren Riley’s (click here for the part) and they arrived quickly.

Fender Jack Phone Stereo 6.5mm 0059922000For this repair I thought I would replace all the jacks including the ‘loop’ jack. The first process is to desolder the current connections. This can be tricky depending on your skill and tools. I would highly recommend a desolder bulb or suction ‘pen’. I’ve always had terrible luck with braids and wicks, but whatever works for you. If you have no desoldering tools.. STOP and get something first.

The important tip for this is to take your time, don’t force things by prying too hard or pulling the component. By taking your time you’ll ensure a clean removal while not damaging the board.

Here is a shot of the board with all the connections I will need to desolder (total of 23 connections).

Marshall Guv'nor Solder PointsAs you can see that 2 of the jacks use all 9 lugs (Input and Loop) but the output only uses 5 lugs. I clipped the extra lugs from that jack. Make sure you verify before clipping anything (“measure twice – cut once” rule applies here).

Here is a shot of the original output jack with my new jack with clipped lugs:

Marshall Guv'nor Clipped LugsAfter re-soldering all of your connections (be careful to not create shorts with your soldering, but keeping the solder enclosed within the bounds of their solder pads) it’s time to secure the jacks. These jacks have plastic threads, so be sure to NOT over-tighten. I like it tight, but over tightening will lead you to do this all over again.

Here is the shot of the Marshall Guv’nor with the old broken jacks removed.

Marshall Guv'nor - Broken Jacks RemovedI was pleased to get the Marshall Guv’nor back together, and it works perfectly. It passed the “kick” test. I’m guessing the jacks were actually broken inside or the contacts were not seated well within the jack itself. Definitely the new jacks felt tighter in general.

This was an easy repair, but if you’re not fluent in soldering, specifically with desoldering, this could be a little tougher for the novice. I can’t state enough – take your time and it should work out great.

Lotus Red Knob Give Away!

Lotus Red Knob Give Away!GIVE AWAY IS CLOSED

A while back we did a demo of the Lotus Pedals Designs Red Knob. The Red Knob is a dirty and dark overdrive and uses the TS-808 chip. Plenty of gain with a nice classic ‘wooly’ tone. A really great overdrive. The response on the YouTube demo has been great, and Sean Erspamer of Lotus is kind enough to offer this guy to a lucky EffectsBay reader. Thanks Sean.

First off, I want to quickly talk about Lotus Pedal Designs. As I mentioned in the demo post, I really like his approach to simplicity. Most of his pedals are two knobs and a dream with a single foot switch. They pretty much only include the Lotus logo, what identifies what pedal they are is by the knob color. I dig it. To see all the pedals Lotus offers, check out their pedal selection here. While you’re at it, check out their Facebook and Twitter pages as well.

Okay, how do you win the Lotus Pedal Designs Red Knob? Read below:

I’m going to select one random entry on March 2nd. I will email that random entry asking for the answer to the question listed below. They will have 24 hours to respond with the answer. If the 24 hours passes and I don’t hear from that finalist, I will select a new random entry and repeat the process until I receive confirmation from the winner. This is open to everyone. Yes, that means international! Also, one entry per person. Please read that last sentence again… “one” “entry” “per” “person”.

The submission form will be open until March 2nd (Friday) 12PM MST.

On top of that, I’m going to sweeten the deal. If you ‘LIKE’ EffectsBay on Facebook and you’re selected as the winner, I’ll throw in a extra prize – A free Pedal Label System pack (learn more at PedalLabels.com)

So, it’s pretty much a no-brainer to like Effectsbay on Facebook! Just click ‘like’ below or visit the EffectsBay Facebook page here.

So the question is…. “What piece of gear do you own, that you will NEVER part with?”

Please help promote this give away by Re-Tweeting and sharing on Facebook! Keeping these give aways successful is the key to more give aways. Everyone likes free stuff right?

Pigtronix FAT Drive Demo

Pigtronix FAT Drive DemoA little while back, the kind folks at Pigtronix sent over the FAT Drive for us to take on a test drive. They unleashed the FAT Drive at NAMM this year, it’s great to get a new unit to demo! The FAT Drive is an overdrive that uses CMOS clipping with the standard controls you’d expect from a overdrive – Volume, Gain and Tone, but also has something a little extra. A toggle switch simply called ‘More’. The ‘more’ toggle changes the gain structure.. for more goodness. The pedal can be powered via 9volts, but comes with a 18v adapter for increased clarity and output.

Here is the official description from Pigtronix’s web site:

Pigtronix FAT Drive is thick and juicy, dripping with touch sensitive overdrive that responds to every nuance of your playing style. Multiple cascaded
gain stages enable the FAT drive to cover sounds ranging from slightly overdriven to rich saturation, all while retaining musical dynamics and the original character of your instrument.

FAT Drive takes a futuristic analog approach to create complex crunch tones using CMOS clipping and a variable low pass filter for tone shaping. Bringing the tone control all the way clockwise takes this filter completely out of the circuit for total transparency and robust low end. Rolling the tone control back smooths out the highs, leaving ample mid-range bloom and bottom end punch.

A Hi / Lo toggle switch brings additional versatility to the FAT Drive’s wide-ranging palette of overdrive tones, altering the gain structure for enhanced crunch and soaring leads. The FAT Drive features true bypass switching and runs fine on standard 9-volt power but ships with an 18-volt adapter for superior headroom, clarity and overall output.

For the demo we have my good friend Jimmy Rolle on guitar duty again. He’s playing his trusty Gibson Custom Shop Les Paul Elegant into a Germino Lead 55 head through a Marshall 4×12 cabinet. There is nothing between the guitar and amp besides the Pigtronix FAT Drive.

You can listen to the high quality MP3 clip via SoundCloud

The FAT Drive is available for purchase, and is a great value. It’s only $139 at Amazon!

Make sure you check out Pigtronix on the web, Facebook and Twitter for more information on their great products!

Free Shirt Wednesday – 2/22 – Diago

Free Shirt Wednesday - 2/22 - DiagoEarly on in EffectsBay history, I started Free Shirt Wednesday. Basically, it’s a way for builders, dealers and bands to get some exposure on the web site. They would send me a shirt, I would wear the shirt and I would talk about what they do. It’s been a fun thing, and a great way to get the word out. If you’re interested in being featured on Free Shirt Wednesday, click here for more info.

This week’s Free Shirt Wednesday is Diago. Diago is a great company out of England that are making some cool things the guitarists and bassists out there. Their primary product is a very cool pedal board. They offer three primary versions – Gigman, Showman and Tourman. They sent one here for a demo (that will come soon) and it’s very nice.  Here is their brief description of their pedal boards:

Diago Pedal BoardIt combines a lightweight and roadworthy pedal board and hard case, making it ideal for transporting your gear between home, gigs and practices. It makes set-up and take-down quick and easy, and is great for storing your pedals at home, so that they can be neatly hidden away from your wife/mum/significant other.

Diago also offers pedal power solutions focusing on low noise offering 9V and 3000mA (they also offer a smaller version 9V at 1000mA) and quality adapters.

Finally, they make the “Little Smasher” which is a compact guitar amp (head). It’s 5 watts, but packs a punch. This is NOT a pedal that you would put in your signal chain, but is truly an amp that can power at 4×12. Here is what they have to say about the Little Smasher:

A fully fledged amp head, its four analogue modelled cascading gain stages adjusted by Gain and Volume controls give a range of tones from chimey clean to plexi-esque rock crunch, and it’s designed to work especially well with pedals up front if you need to push it further or want multiple channels.  It also has active Bass and Treble controls with a massive 15dB boost and 30dB cut available on each.

Diago has dealers all over the world. For a dealer near you – check out their dealers page.

Be sure to check out Diago at their website, like them on Facebook and follow them on Twitter. Some sweet products for sure!
