Pedal Line Friday – 9/30 – Jeff Bailey

Today’s pedal line is from Jeff Bailey. If you have a pedal line (doesn’t have to be in a board) for your rig, please email me a photo, bio, description of pedals and routing to pedallineateffectsbaydotcom. Every Friday I’ll showcase a pedal line submission. Make sure you include any links to your band or music page.

Pedal Line Friday - 9/30 - Jeff BaileyHey my name is Jeff Bailey. I usually play bass in my bands The Greenleafs and Southern Harmony. My bass rig is just a chord, bass, and 2 tens.  I love to create new music though so I have a guitar rig too.  This is what I use when I just go jam with my buddies just for the hell of it.  I have tried to make it my own and get a sound that is unique. This is my current setup and like many it is always changing.

Foundation: Gator board with gator power supply.

It is just big enough and super easy to move and doesn’t slip and all that kind of stuff.

This is the order

Crybaby classic GCB-95F

Sounds like a wah should.  At least that’s what I think.

BBE FREQ Boost
If you have never used one of these you should. It takes the signal and gives it this awesome boosted mid treble shine that pushes a tube amp into the sky.

Homebrew Electronics UFO
This is my newest and I say the rawest sounding pedal I have.  It has a wall of fuzz that is super tunable and then the octave up takes it to another level literally. It is the true ultimate fuzz octave.

Visual sound route 66
Gigantic.  I don’t mind though because it is a compressor and an overdrive.  The drive side is modeled after a ts808 but adds a bass boost. I don’t use the bass boost all the time but sometimes you just need it. The compressor sounds just like a compressor. Compressed.

MXR Distortion+
This is my core distortion sound.  Its an old one like 78 I believe.  You have to have a dirty amp to work it to the full effect.  It nails 70s distortion because it is.

DOD FX65
An analog chorus pedal for the 80s.  It is the first pedal that I ever bought. (I am not that old I bout it at a pawn shop.) I would recommend it to anyone that was looking for chorus. It is simple and silky.

Electro-Harmonix Stereo Pulsar
So tremolo is kind of my weakness. It is a vibe that a lot of people overlook.  Vibrato you can get from a string shake but tremolo is another story.  This one is variable shape you can have a notchy square wave or a smooth triangle.  You can also change the emphasis of the sound to the back or front of the wave. Very choice. This is where is spilt my signal into my Univox u45. I have a little tuner (not pictured) that I use to shut of the Univox.  If you have never heard stereo tremolo from mismatched amps you haven’t lived.

MXR Carbon Copy
Lastly some echo. I like analog delay and this is the analog delay.  It is super warm and when I want to do a delay solo it can do some self-oscillation.

My primary Amp is a Blues Jr. Tweed and I play a Gibson Les Paul Mahogany most of the time. Thanks for letting me share. It is one of those things that makes me feel alive when I am playing.

Pedal Line Friday - 9/30 - Jeff BaileyUPDATE

Jeff contacted me and let me know that he has a updated board since his submission. Here is a pic:

Pedal Line Friday - 9/30 - Jeffrey Bailey - UpdatedDetails:

I removed the chorus and added a small stone phaser Russian made. I uploaded a pic of the rearranged board.

Ehx sovtek small stone
Its a super cool 4 stager with a color switch that runs a fifth stage that makes it kinda invert and real thick like.  Really simple and adds a ton of cool sounds.

Source Audio Programmable EQ

Source Audio Compact Programmable EQI mentioned in the past that I picked up a baritone (and a Schecter Unltra VI). For the Ultra VI, I needed to boost signal so I’m using a MXR micro amp, but the baritone I need to make some adjustments to the EQ. Little too much bass, scoop the mids a bit and turn up the highs  a little. But I hate doing this to the amp. I know I’ll forget to switch it back when I switch to guitar. I figured a A/B switch with a EQ in line with the baritone might be the ticket.  So now, I’m on a ‘loose’ hunt for a footswitch EQ. Been looking at Boss GE-7 or the MXR 6 Band, but I saw a video yesterday that’s may have added another player to the group. That pedal is the Source Audio Programmable EQ.

I’ve dealt with Source Audio in the past. They’re great people, making great stuff, so I was pleasantly surprised to see them working on a programmable EQ (actually.. not surprised). With the EQ being digital, it means that it can now store presets. This is potentially great for me with the Ultra VI and Baritone, since they both need tweaking through my guitar amp. The EQ is a 8 band EQ (1 band for bass guitar frequency). You can store 4 preset including output level. To switch preset you can push a select button or ‘long press’ the footswitch to page through the presets.

Here is the official description of the Source Audio Programmable EQ:

A one-of-a-kind compact graphic EQ pedal that holds four savable presets, 18 dB of adjustable gain on 8 separate bands of EQ. Bonus functions include the tremolo-like Auto-Scroll and MIDI compatibility.

Here is a video by HarmonyCentral interviewing Source Audio at NAMM 2011 about the Programmable EQ:

If you’re interested in the Source Audio Programmable EQ, you can pick it up for $149.00 at Amazon.com

Free Shirt Wednesday – 9/28 – Musiquip

Today’s Free Shirt Wednesday is brought to you by Musiquip. I was contacted by Musiquip a few months ago letting me know that they’re a an official US distributor of T-Rex pedals and I was happy to meet someone else from the T-Rex family. I think T-Rex makes some great things, I really like how they really try to reach out by sending their pedals out to be reviewed, etc. It’s really hard to beat that type of promotion for your company.

Musiquip is a marketing and distribution company dedicated to the US music industry. They distribute a variety of brands – Tanglewood Guitar Company, AER, Boucher Guitars, JBovier Guitars, Steph, Hiscox Cases and T-Rex Effects. The people at Musiquip wanted to send a t-shirt to EffectsBay to be featured for Free Shirt Wednesday. A few days ago I received the shirt and it was a black T-Rex t-shirt. Very cool. One problem, I already have it. Solution. Why not give it away!

Free Shirt Wednesday - 9/28 - MusiquipSo for this Free Shirt Wednesday I didn’t put the shirt on for the photo, and I’ll be giving it away. Along with this shirt, I figured I’d give away an EffectsBay.com shirt as well. To have your chance to win this shirt (both are ‘Large’), just sign up to the mailing list. If you’re already signed up.. you’re already entered. You can sign up to the EffectsBay mailing list here. I’ll pick a winner in a couple of days.

Thanks Musiquip for sending the shirt!

Now, if you want to be featured on Free Shirt Wednesday.. it’s really quite simple. Send me a shirt, if it’s music related (ie: guitar builder, band, pedal builder, guitar shop, recording studio, etc) I’ll dedicate a blog post about your biz, band, etc. I’ll take a photo with my aging, slightly pudgy mug and post it. Great simple, cheap form of advertising. Still interested? Then check this page for more info

John Mayer Pedal Line Breakdown

John Mayer is another guitar player that I’m not a big fan of, but I definitely respect his guitar tone and quality of play. This guy can really lay down some awesome guitar. I remember catching a few live performances on TV that really impressed me, so when I came across this Premier Guitar Rig Rundown I wanted to share this. It’s a little old (9/8/10), but I would assume some of the pedals are still in the line up.. if not all of them.

This video really shows what’s all involved with his guitar tone. Premier Guitar’s Rebecca Dirks interviews Rene Martinez (guitar tech for Stevie Ray Vaughn, Prince, Mick Jones). Video submitted by PremierGuitar

As you notice, Rene doesn’t go into detail about the pedals except for the fact that they’re using a Bradshaw switching system.. and that they’re on in the trays. I wish he would have talk about a few of them – ie: the Roger Linn pedals, etc. I was able to get good screen snaps off all the pedals and was able to identify all of them. Here is the breakdown of pedals below.

ZVex Instant Lo-Fi Junky

ZVex Instant Lo-Fi JunkyToday I wanted to talk about the ZVex Instant Lo-Fi Junky. I came across a great video by Rock n Roll Vintage where they go into great detail of what this pedal can do. I’m a big fan of Rock n Roll Vintage out of Chicago (sort on my bucket lists of guitar shops to check out). The ZVex Instant Lo-Fi Junky is an interesting pedal providing cool effects with modulated, warbled and compressing effected signal. Want to tweak something up? This might be the pedal.

Here is the official description of the ZVex Instant Lo-Fi Junky:

Hello, and welcome to the world of the Instant Lo-Fi JunkyTM. Any of you who’ve heard the sound of the Lo-Fi Loop JunkyTM will understand this pedal immediately… its purpose is to imitate that sound in real time. Joel Korte, the extraordinary engineer behind this new device, was able to create a combination of THAT chip compression, Belling bucket-brigades, and ultra low-current National Semiconductor op-amp filters to exquisitely copy the texture and feel of the original Lo-Fi into this new and extraordinary box, adding some new sounds that have never been heard before.

Here is the video by Rock n Roll Vintage (submitted by JustNickMusic):

T-Rex Tonebug Fuzz Demo

T-Rex Tonebug Fuzz DemoCurrently, I’m running a T-Rex Tonebug Fuzz give away (full details here). A few of you emailed asking what the pedal was all about. Well, good thing we demo’d the pedal! The great people at T-Rex were kind enough to send over a few Tonebugs for EffectsBay to demo, so I want stop and say thanks to T-Rex! If you get a chance, please check out T-Rex Effects for their complete listing of awesome guitar/bass pedals!

So let’s get down to the nuts and bolts. The T-Rex Tonebug Fuzz has three basic controls.

Fuzz – controls the amount of dirt/clip you want in the signal
Tone – controls how bright/dark you want it to sound
Level – controls the overall output gain of the effect

So what’s the deal with the Tonebug series? T-Rex has been pumping out some great pedals since 2002, and probably their most sought after pedal is the Replica Delay. Great quality with excellent detail to tone and effect, which also came with a equivalent price tag. With the Tonebug series, the folks at T-Rex wanted to achieve the follow – “to provide the best effects on the market for reasonable money.” The Tonebug series has been growing ever since.

For this demo, I again enlisted the help of Jimmy Rolle. Jimmy is playing is Gibson Les Paul Elegant Custom Shop guitar into a Rivera Knucklehead 100w head through a Marshall 4×12 cabinet. The cabinet is mic’d with a Shure SM57 and Fathead Ribbon Mic. Nothing is between the guitar and amp except for the T-Rex Tonebug Fuzz.

You can listen to the high quality MP3 clip via SoundCloud

Now, as I mentioned, the T-Rex Tonebug Fuzz give away is still on. It ends on Monday 9/26, so be sure to get your entry in before it’s too late!

Pedal Line Friday – 9/23 – Niall Jones

Today’s pedal line is from Niall Jones. If you have a pedal line (doesn’t have to be in a board) for your rig, please email me a photo, bio, description of pedals and routing to pedallineateffectsbaydotcom. Every Friday I’ll showcase a pedal line submission. Make sure you include any links to your band or music page.

Pedal Line Friday - 9/23 - Niall JonesHey This is the current setup of my board with the addition of a 2nd Line6 DL4! The Board includes Line6 DL4 x2. This to me is one of the best pedal ever made! the delays on it amazing and unparalleled by any other, although I mainly use the loopers! I know they may not be as good or adaptable as the boss ones! But to me there just brilliant. I use the speed up function to create chords that I play on both pedals building up a second guitar line under what I am actually playing, and creating a bed of swells under the more ambient tracks! These pedals are the best things ever made!

Marshall Vibratrem Brilliant pedal very warm sounding and very rounded! Beautiful sounding pedal!
Boss CH-1 Super Chorus Very warm! And an amazing tone to it! Use this in very understated ways just to give an different dimension to the sound!
Danelectro Reel Echo An amazing analogue/digital delay! It has all the features of a of digital delay but all in a old school analogue box with a slide control for delay time! Just an amazing delay pedal!
Marshall Reflector Reverb!
Marshall Regenorator Step phaser! Such an ace effect! Putting phaser on the guitar then cutting it like a tremolo so the guitar seems to be jumping around all over the place! amazing sound and spuriously useful!
Marshall Blues Breaker Not used as a blues breaker! This is used a a clean boost! Allowing me to play with the dynamics of the sound of the clean sound!
Marshall Compressor explains itself!
Boss DS-1 Light distortion! Giving a bit of crunch but not overwellimg or overpowering!
Boss DS-2 Lead distortion! Loads of grit with loads of gain! but yet still very warm! but will blow your balls off!
Dunlop Original Crybaby classic sounding wah! Just beautiful!

The main band I play is in Inca-Hoots debut album came out on the 16th of July! We are a TechRockProgPop band! www.facebook.com/weareincahoots
cheers
