Pedal Line Friday – 4/29 – Alan Mansfield

Today’s pedal line is from Alan Mansfield. If you have a pedal line (doesn’t have to be in a board) for your rig, please email me a photo, bio, description of pedals and routing to pedallineateffectsbaydotcom. Every Friday I’ll showcase a pedal line submission. Make sure you include any links to your band or music page.

Pedal Line Friday - 4/29 - Alan Mansfield
My name is Alan Mansfield. I am the guitarist for Witness Tree. I have been playing for 20+ years and I wanted to submit my pedalboard for your Friday article.

First… I primarily play a Les Paul and a Telecaster. My amp of choice is a 100w Hughes & Kettner Duotone head thru a Mesa oversized custom 4×12 cabinet.

My pedalboard is a Pedaltrain Pro (hardcase) with 2 Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 2+ units attached. Having 2 allows a lot more configuration options.

The signal chain is:
1 – Ernie Ball Mono Volume Pedal. No explanation needed, but I do NOT use the tuner out. Since the input, tuner out, and output jacks are in parallel, there is an affectation to the signal with the tuner plugged into the tuner out. I am not a fan, so I don’t use it. Neither should you.

2 – TC Electronic Polytune. Great little tuner and true bypass.

3 – Budda Budwah. No explanation needed. Great wah with low sweep and good tone.

4 & 5 - Sioux Guitars Court St. Overdrive. The thing about these overdrive pedals isn’t how they can party with the best OD pedals out there (yes… including the TS) but how versatile they are. Tons of room for ALL adjustments (Volume, Gain, Tone). You can dial in a classic Fender Bassman warmth, you can crank up to get a smoking hot “Black Crowes” vibe, dial back the gain and add some bite to the tone for a “Stones” feel… I just feel like I can do ANYTHING with these pedals.

6 – Sioux Guitars Villa Ave. Distortion. The best description I have ever heard regarding this distortion/fuzz pedal is from the legendary Jeff Dahl; “The Villa Ave is my kind of fuzz! No soulless modern hi-gain sound, this is all about early Sabbath and Blue Cheer. I’ve been waiting for years to hold that endlessly oozing fat note again! It’s not meant for fast riffage, but for majestically heavy powerchords, long bends and melodic lines ala ‘Satisfaction’ or ‘Hot Smoke & Sassafras’. The Villa Ave can’t be beat. And none of that adenoidal, pulsing modulation that was so prevalent in the Seattle grunge scene. This is thick, greasy & smooth. The sexiest fuzz on the planet.” Well said, Jeff.

7 – Electro Harmonix Small Stone Phaser. This is an OK Phaser. I bought it last minute at my local guitar shop as I really wanted a phaser right then and there. I stacked several small form factor phasers next to each other at the shop and ran them thru a Vox AC30 with a telecaster. I went with this one because it sounded better than the newer MXR Phase 90 and the MXR Phase 45 script didn’t have a 9v jack. I am in the market for a better one. It’s nice, but I am sure there is better out there.

8 – Sioux Guitars Flood Of ’53 Flanger. This flanger is subtle. It isn’t an indecipherable swirling & undulating mess. Very nice and tasty for clean rhythms and funky walks. Very old school classic blues rock as well ala Robin Trower. Very clean & articulate.

9 – Sioux Guitars K-D Chorus. Admittedly, I was somewhat of a novice when it comes to true analog chorus before I added this one. I have always used digital chorus (Boss, etc) which produces an entirely different sound and range. But when I switched to a more simplified analog chorus sound, I couldn’t be happier. I A/B’d the Sioux Guitars K-D Chorus with a EHX Small Clone and found that not only did the K-D stand toe-to-toe with this legend, I found it to be slightly more versatile- even in its simplicity. Lush, liquid lows and chimey, distinct highs. Perfect chorus doubling and the wicked throb of a Leslie.

10 – Line 6 DL4 Delay. No explanation needed. However, I am upgrading this to a DL4 that has been modded by JHS Pedals. The volume drop issue without the stock one is driving me crazy.

11 – Electro Harmonix Micro POG. No explanation needed. Rarely use this pedal except for some retro power pop/pop organ voicings. Kinda cool. This one may not survive the ever-changing pedalboard configuration.

12 – Boss ’63 Fender Reverb. Since my H&K head doesn’t come equipped with reverb, I needed to find a nice reverb pedal. I know most folks like the “other” Boss reverb pedal, but I really dig this one. Nice and wide with a decent recreation of a classic reverb tank in a pedal. I wasn’t going to shell out the cash for a reverb tank so I picked this up. Couldn’t be happier with it. I am not doing any Dick Dale licks or anything so this serves its purpose.

There you have it- However, I want to give a little more info on the Sioux Guitars pedals. These are HAND MADE pedals by a gentleman in Sioux City, IA. I just stumbled upon his pedals as another fellow guitarist in my area was being endorsed by the maker of these pedals and I instantly fell in love with his tone. I contact the guy and was impressed by his knowledge, his craftsmanship, and his desire to make a classic pedal that built like a tank, created a classic and amazing tone, a knack for “keeping it simple”, and prices his pedals for the everyman- not charge a bag full of money for his pedals like every other boutique pedal maker out there. You need to check this guy out.

Anyway… thanks for taking the time to check out my rig!

Onwards and upwards.

Free Shirt Wednesday – 4/27 – Floyd Upgrades

Free Shirt Wednesday - 4/27 - Floyd UpgradesI got in contact with Adam Reiver of Floyd Upgrades (FU) and he sent over a shirt for this week’s Free Shirt Wednesday submission. Heading over to his site, I see that Adam has been working with a crazy list of A-List guitarists and their Floyd Rose bridges for nearly 20 years and now is offering some of those upgrades and modifications to the public. When I say A-List.. it would include names like Slash, Vernon Reid, Eddie Van Halen, Mick Mars, George Lynch, etc. Not a bad list at all.

Adam also created the D-Tuner (EVH D-Tuna) system which is a modification to a Floyd Rose where you can easily drop to D tuning. But for this post, we’ll just be talking about the Floyd Upgrades.

Floyd Upgrades has a form on their site where it you can create or build your own FU Bridge. You can specify bridge color, big block size, hardware, saddle inserts, saddles, springs, spring claw, locking nut and add a EVH D-Tuna if you want. On the site you can purchase the individual components as well to upgrade your existing Floyd. You can read about each upgrade component, and read reviews from others as well.

Free Shirt Wednesday - 4/27 - Floyd Upgrades back of shirtAlong with Floyds, Floyd Upgrades also has additional items for sale – EVH Frankenstein Humbucker, Exotic Wood Picks, Acoustic Bridge Pins, etc.

If you have a Floyd Rose bridge/trem system and looking for an opportunity to improve it, definitely check out Floyd Upgrades. You can learn a ton from their site, and also ‘like’ them on Facebook for important announcements.

Free Shirt Wednesday - 4/27 - Floyd UpgradesNow, if you want to be featured on Free Shirt Wednesday.. it’s really quite simple. Send me a shirt, if it’s music related (ie: guitar builder, band, pedal builder, guitar shop, recording studio, etc) I’ll dedicate a blog post about your biz, band, etc. I’ll take a photo with my aging, slightly pudgy mug and post it. Great simple, cheap form of advertising. Still interested? Then check this page for more info

EffectsLounge.com, A Community Website Targeted At Electric Guitar Players, Launches Open Beta

EffectsLounge.com, A Community Website Targeted At Electric Guitar Players, Launches Open BetaI received a email from Phil at Fat Tone Guitars letting me know about a new project he’s involved with – EffectsLounge.com. I thought it was pretty cool, so wanted to share. Here is the official press release below!

Northbrook, IL — April 12, 2011 – Fat Tone Guitars has launched a new website: EffectsLounge.com (FXL). FXL is an online community developed for guitar players, by guitar players. FXL offers users the innovative Build Your Board (BYB) App that allows players to build their own virtual pedalboards and share them across social media. This easy-to-use app enables musicians to explore, create and redefine their sound by dragging and dropping effect pedals from FXL’s extensive pedal database onto a BYB virtual pedalboard.

FXL users can edit and comment on their own pedalboards, and comment and rate other users’ pedalboards.  New must-have pedals are continually added to FXL’s database. The website showcases pedalboards of the hottest players, so that FXL users can emulate the sounds of their favorite musicians.

“Guitar players love to show their pedalboards to other guitarists” said Phil Vickman, Co-Founder of FXL.  “It’s about pedalboard show and tell. There’s a reason why there are so many huge discussion threads on pedalboards all across the web.”

“We wanted to be able not only to build our pedalboard, but to share it with others and I couldn’t find a site that did that.  So we built it.” said Seth Dobbs, Co-Founder of FXL. “EffectsLounge.Com is a virtual showcase of guitar effects and tone.”

In addition to BYB, FXL will provide community functionality such as a blog, Twitter feed and soon to be released community forums. Effectslounge.com is the website that guitar players have been waiting for.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd Pedal Board – Experience Hendrix

Yesterday I posted the charity auction that Analog Man was putting on for Japan Tsunami relief. In that auction he was giving away a signed Analog Man King of Tone pedal from Kenny Wayne Shepherd. In the listing there was a shot of Kenny’s board during the Experience Hendrix tours, so thought it would be fun to break down the pedals for those of you interested. There was one unidentified pedal in there, so if you can shed some light, please do by commenting below.

Here is Kenny Wayne Shepherd’s Pedal Board:

Kenny Wayne Shepherd Pedal Board - Experience HendrixHere are the following pedals I was able to identify. Going from bottom right to left:

Chicago Iron Octavia
Jim Dunlop MC404 Dual Inductor Wah
Analog Man King of Tone
Ibanez TS808HW Tubescreamer
Analog Man Bi-Chorus
Boss TU-2 Tuner
Analog Man AR20DL
?? Amp Switcher
Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2 Power Supply

I’m not sure about the Amp Selector/Switcher model or the red pedal directly left of the Boss TU-2 tuner. If you know.. please comment below!

UPDATE

Just got word via Twitter the red pedal is the Analog Man AR20DL pedal.

Analog Man King of Tone KoT – KWS, Japan Tsunami relief

Analog Man King of Tone KoT - KWS, Japan Tsunami reliefThis is a interesting auction on eBay I just stumbled upon. It’s a Analog Man King of Tone (KoT) pedal owned/played by Kenny Wayne Shepherd used in the Experience Hendrix tour from 2009 to 2010. It’s signed by Kenny Wayne Shepherd as well. All proceeds from this auction will go to the Japan Tsunami relief.. so great cause.

Here is the official description of the auction:

Kenny sent this pedal back to us after using it heavily, in July 2009 when we installed new chips (he played it so much, he wore out the chips!!!). He then used again it till late 2010 when I sent him a new one for recording. I asked him to sign it for me for this auction and he graciously did that for us.

If you were lucky enough to see the EXPERIENCE HENDRIX tour in the last few years, you heard this actual pedal and saw Kenny’s amazing playing… among guitar Gods like Eric Johnson, Kenny consistently brought the house down every night.

You can view this charity auction currently on eBay here. At the time of this posting, there were only 8 days remaining (10 bids and at $400).

The Analog Man King of Tone is a hard pedal to find. There is usually a waiting list, etc. You can read more about the KoT on Analog Man’s website here. If you’re looking for other King of Tone deals.. check out PedalNerd.com for other King of Tone listings.

Pedal Line Friday – 4/22 – Eugene Van Wyk

Today’s pedal line is from Eugene Van Wyk. If you have a pedal line (doesn’t have to be in a board) for your rig, please email me a photo, bio, description of pedals and routing to pedallineateffectsbaydotcom. Every Friday I’ll showcase a pedal line submission. Make sure you include any links to your band or music page.

Pedal Line Friday - 4/22 - Eugene Van Wyk

The board is:
1. Boss TU-2 tuner
2. Vox wah
3. Boss CS-3 compressor/sustainer
4. Digitech Metal Master distortion
5. Morpheus drop tuner
6. volume pedal
7. Boss NS-2 noise suppressor
8. Boss DD-7 delay
8.Boss FS-5U 1 delay tap switch (not connected to chain)
9. Dunlop DC Brick power supply

The pedals…

My basic sound is just the distortion pedal. Been trying for years to find the holy grail of distortion but I’ve been struggling all the way. I am currently using a line 6 spider valve 212 which is plenty powerful and gives me kind of the sound I’m looking for. It’s always been a mix of pedals and amps and currently I have EMG pickups on my Gibson Les Paul.

The tuner, noise suppressor and volume pedal are there for obvious reasons.

At the moment I’m switching between the metal master and the MXR fullbore metal. The built in noise gate and scoop on the MXR are pretty awesome but sometimes I like to be able to control the feedback instead of eliminating it completely. The volume pedal works really well when I’m on stage trying to fade the feedback in and out.

The drop tuner is a relative new add to my collection. A lot of my favorite metal bands are all playing in drop C and drop B and I find that manually tuning my guitar is like “having an elastic band pulled over a cereal box”. But the drop tuner works great to give you that real heavy sound that dropping your tuning would give you otherwise. I find that it does affect your sound somewhat in a kind of slurry way… if that makes any sense.

Finally, the delay with tap switch and the vox wah are just for me to experiment with. It gives me some room to explore and experiment with my sound. Sometimes it just gives you something to work with if you’re stuck for ideas but it’s not really a big part of my live setup…

This is my band.., The Crow Murder.

All I have are some very old demos… but are new tracks will be out real soon

Eventide Stompbox Freakout

Eventide Stompbox FreakoutA couple of days ago I received an email from Alex from SourceDistribution.co.uk and he let me know about a video they put together where they play through a few Eventide stompboxes to illustrate some of the interesting and crazy possibilities that could be had with only a guitar, amp and a few Eventide stompboxes. I checked the video out.. and it’s quite cool! The Eventide TimeFactor is a legendary delay, and is often listed/mentioned as top delay you can get, but I was really impressed with the PitchFactor. I haven’t seen it in action much, so it was nice to see something I wasn’t to familiar with.

If you get chance, you should subscribe to SourceDistributionTV‘s YouTube channel.. great stuff there.

In this video the following Eventide effects were used:

Eventide TimeFactor Twin Delay
Eventide PitchFactor Harmonizer
Eventide ModFactor Modulation
