Dunlop SW-95 Crybaby Slash Wah

Dunlop SW-95 Crybaby Slash Wah PedalToday I wanted to talk about the Dunlop SW-95, which is the “Slash” wah built to emulate some of Slash’s tones and configured to his specs. This wah has some interesting features. It first uses the Fasel inductor and has a gain circuit. Basically, has on board gain circuit that can be turned on separately from the main wah function. There are two knobs at the front of the pedal. One controls volume, and the other controls gain. It has a bright blue LED for on/off status. This wah requires 18v so 2 9v batteries are required to run this pedal.. or external power supply.

Here is the official description:

Like the guitarist himself, the Dunlop SW-95 Slash Wah is revolutionary and a classic at the same time. It sports a hot rod, metallic-red finish and a cutting edge, high gain circuit for a different and distinct sound. It also has a modified Fasel inductor for sweet, singing top end and upper midrange bite and sparkle on the wah. 18V operation yields tons of extra headroom. LED indicators for distortion on/off and wah on/off modes keep you clued in at all times. Top hat not included.

Dunlop SW-95 Crybaby Slash Wah Pedal Features:

* High gain distortion circuit
* Fasel inductor circuitry tuned to Slash’s specs
* 18V operation
* LEDs for distortion on/off and wah-wah on/off

I found this video by Jungleboy867 where he gives you a good thorough tour:

Currently the Dunlop SW-95 Crybaby Slash Wah is on sale at Musician’s Friend! At the time of this post, it normally sells for $169.99 but is on sale for $127.43 (57% off MSRP).

Distortion Pedal on the Cheap – Epiphone Distortion

Epiphone Distortion PedalI was checking out Musician’s Friend, and I see they have sale on the Epiphone Distortion pedal on sale for only $29.99. That’s 73% off of MSRP. It normally sells for$69.99. It is a clearance item so it’s limited to what stock is available.

This would be a good gift for the starting guitarist that is trying to build up their gear. Or… what could be fun, is to mod this pedal for a fun project. I have no idea how this pedal sounds, and I couldn’t find any clips. If you have any personal experience with this pedal, please comment below with your thoughts.

The bottom line, this could be a great little dirt box for a cheap price. Epiphone Distortion Pedal for $29.99

Review of DDyna Music’s Bass 10 Compressor/Overdrive

I was contact by Dan from DDyna Music to see if I would be interested to put EffectsBay.com on the list for the Bass 10 Compressor/Overdrive tour box, and I was very much interested. I really like the ‘tour box’ concept where a builder sends it out for review, and then each reviewer passes it to the next on the list. Who know how many miles this compressor will travel before it arrives back home.

DDyna Bass 10 Compressor Overdrive Review

The DDyna Bass 10 is a great compressor Overdrive, primarily for bass players, but has a spot for the guitarists out there. I don’t have a bass, and wouldn’t be qualified to do any demos regarding bass, so this demos is purely a guitar oriented review. Again, for this review, I enlisted help from Jimmy Rolle.

The layout of the pedal is broken down into three sections – EQ, Overdrive and Compression. The Bass10 has 4 Bandpass filters (Bass, Mid Low, Mid High and Treble) in the EQ section. The Overdrive section has Overdrive Volume, Depth and Drive. The Compressor side has Compressor Volume, Compression Ratio and Sustain.

There are two footswitches – one that enables the pedal and another that turns the Overdrive section on and off. The pedal operates from 12 to 18VDC so no battery option.

For the first clip, Jimmy is playing a American Fender Stratocaster into his Rivera Knucklehead (clean channel). This review will focus on various settings (playing a similar line between on and off) and finally into using the Bass 10′s overdrive section.

Also available is a high quality MP3 clip at SoundCloud

This second clip is Jimmy playing on the Gain Channel of the Rivera Knucklehead. He is also playing a Les Paul Custom Shop Elegant guitar for this clip. The concept here is to see how the compressor affects lead playing on the gain side. Also he engages the Overdrive as well to see how it sounds with amp distortion and overdrive combined.

Also available is a high quality MP3 clip at SoundCloud

Both audio recordings were recorded with a AKG Solidtube and Shure SM57 microphones.

The DDyna Bass 10 is a very versatile compressor with the ability to dial in various tones. The low and high mid bandpass filters offer some very specific shaping which is nice. I can really see how bass players could really benefit using a compressor to focus their sound, and the option for overdrive is a nice as well.

The Bass 10 is available directly from DDyna Music for $289.00. Additionally, you should check out their other pedals (Thinman Overdrive, Charlie Special and the Narlie! Dude).

IK Multimedia AmpliTube iRigToday, Dean over on the Facebook page, asked me what I thought about the iRig for the iPhone. I remember seeing this a few months ago, but didn’t post about it. I think it’s time… it’s pretty awesome.

Russian Circles – Mike Sullivan Pedalboard

Here is a band I really like. Last year, I was bordering on obsession with these guys. For those of you who aren’t familiar with them, they are a 3 piece band based out of Chicago. I really like instrumental bands such as Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, Earthless, etc. Russian Circles fall in this category, but they definitely play in the ‘harder’, ‘spacer’ side of things.

The guitarist, Mike Sullivan plays with Les Pauls (double cutaway) and Sunn amps and develops complex loops with excellent sonic texturing. I wanted to take a look at how he pulls this off so after doing some research I have a somewhat recent pedal board layout. These pedals would have been used during their 2010 tour.

Russian Circles - Mike Sullivan PedalboardAkai E2 Headrush
Electro-Harmonix Nano Holy Grail Reverb
Electro-Harmonix Memory Toy Analog Echo
MXR M-133 Micro Amp
Ibanez TS9 Tubescreamer (Keeley Mod)
Fulltone OCD
Digitech Jamman (older version.. not JML2)
Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Memory Man (older version)
Boss TU-2 Tuner
Ernie Ball Volume Pedal
Furman Pedal Board

Additionally, I did some some pedal board shots where Mike was playing a MXR M-101 Phase 90 as well. Please let me know of any errors or additions by commenting below.

The Vox V847 Wah

Vox V847 Wah-Wah PedalIn honor of Jimi Hendrix, I thought I would talk about the Vox V847 Wah. The V847 is based on the original specs of the wahs of the ’60s. There are some other builders (based on the Clyde McCoy – Fulltone Clyde, Teese, Vox V848, etc) that make some great wahs on the older circuit design. There are some amazing musicians that played the older Vox wahs.. obviously Hendrix, Page, etc.

Here is the official description:

The Vox V845 Classic Wah Wah Guitar Effects Pedal is based on the specifications of the original pedal developed by VOX in the ’60s. The V845 Wah-Wah offers guitarists the same legendary Wah-Wah tone in a new sturdy but very affordable design. The fitted AC power connector saves on batteries and the outer case is coated with tough all-black finish making the VOX Classic Wah-Wah a perfect choice for your pedal board.

VOX developed the world’s first Wah Wah effect during the ’60s to give guitarists the ability to sound like a trumpet being muted—an important musical ingredient of the day. VOX’s original Wah Wah pedal quickly gained widespread popularity and its unique sonic characteristics have encouraged further experimentation by guitarists ever since.

Right now there is a sale on the Vox V847 Wah at Musician’s Friend. It’s available for $69.99, which is 54% below MSRP.

I found another great video by gearmanndude where he compares the Vox V847 against the Dunlop Classic Crybaby.

Happy Birthday Jimi Hendrix

Jimi HendrixJimi was born on November 27th, 1942. He died September 18th, 1970. His influence on the world of guitar is legendary and unquestionable. Some regard him as the greatest guitarist.. ever. Some argue that, but in my opinion his energy, innovation, talent shook the world and that energy is still shaking today.

For his birthday, I was going to post a video of him playing, and got unbelievably side tracked on watching various pieces footage out there. He definitely had the ability to draw you in with his presence and talent. I forgot how ‘raw’ and ‘natural’ the live performance sounded like.. he is very missed.

Boss sale at Musician’s Friend – 3 Boss Pedals below $70

Boss sale at Musician's Friend - 3 Boss Pedals below $70Looking at some of the best values at Musician’s Friend, I found three Boss pedals that are selling below $70 and are 57% to 60% below MSRP (Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price). If you’re into Boss.. or know someone that is into Boss pedals, there might be a good deal here.

Boss DS-1 Distortion PedalBoss DS-1 Distortion. Here is a classic Boss distortion. Something I see on lots of boards out there. This pedal is currently on sale for $39.00. That’s 60% off MSRP! Here is the official description:

From screaming loud to whisper soft, the Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal can faithfully reproduce the dynamics of your playing style. The Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal is a tough stompbox that can take whatever your boot can dish out. Includes 5-year warranty.

Boss SUPER OverDrive SD-1 PedalBoss SD-1 Super Distortion. Here is another classic distortion box. Beyond that, these are great pedals to do clipping diode mods. Check out this article by Cubist Effects – “Mod.It.Yourself (M.I.Y) Part 2 – Diode Clipping” where the article discusses modifying the Boss SD-1. You hackers out there, might be interested in this! Just like the Boss DS-1 deal, this pedal is currently on sale for $39.00 (60% below MSRP). Here is the official description:

The Boss SUPER OverDrive SD-1 gives you the warm, smooth distortion of an overdriven tube amp without blurring the nuances of your picking technique. The unique symmetric drive circuit delivers a more rich, authentic-sounding overdrive effect. Here’s an overdrive pedal that has Level, Drive, and Tone controls that make it easy to go from mild to hard, or even use the SD-1 as a signal booster.

Boss DN-2 Dyna Drive Overdrive PedalBoss DN-2 Dyna Drive Overdrive. This one I don’t know too much about. It’s currently on sale for $69.95. It was normally selling for $79.00 and is now 57% below MSRP. Here is the official description:

The Boss DN-2 is an exciting new type of overdrive pedal that reacts to the intensity of your performance. This unique BOSS pedal comes equipped with the acclaimed Dyna Amp technology introduced in Roland’s popular CUBE-60 amp, letting you create unique tone transitions based on picking dynamics. It’s possible to get a transparent clean output sound by playing softly, or a powerful heavy overdrive sound by picking aggressively.

Nice deal on the Electro-Harmonix Classics Holier Grail Reverb at Musician’s Friend

Nice deal on the Electro-Harmonix Classics Holier Grail Reverb at Musician's FriendAt Musician’s Friend, I came across the Electro-Harmonix Classics Holier Grail Reverb. This is a clearance item, since this is no longer in production. So this pedal and deal won’t last long. I have to admit I’m a sucker for the ‘classic’ look of Electro-Harmonix. They’re big.. but cool.

The Holier Grail is the ‘big brother’ of the popular Holy Grail pedal with some interesting functions/features.

Currently on Musician’s Friend it’s on sale for $99.99. This pedal normally sells for $193.50, so this is quite a drop in price.. and definitely a bargain.

Here is the official description:

The Holier Grail effects pedal expands on the capabilities of the Holy Grail pedal from Electro-Harmonix. It contains 8 different reverb presets: SPRING, HALL, ROOM, and FLERB each at a LONG and SHORT reverb length. In addition to reverb, there is a GATE that ends the reverb tail early for an unnatural yet often pleasing reverb sound.
