Nels Cline Pedalboard – Wilco

I was really excited to see a post on Gear Talk’s instagram account, where they reposted a photo by Jake Blakesberg. This photo was a recent photo of the man, myth and legend – Nels Cline’s pedalboard currently used in Wilco. This is the on the ground set up – Nels typically has a separate set up of interesting effects where he can adjust on the fly with his hands that is raised up. Nels, just like most of us is always exploring for new sounds, replacing pedals for various reasons, so I love seeing board evolution. The last time I posted a board shot was way back in 2012, so things definitely have changed over the years.

So let’s get into it! I was unable to identify a couple of the pedals – specifically the red pedals on the right board and the volume pedal left of the left board. If you can help, please comment below – and I’ll get this post updated! UPDATE – Pedals have been identified. Thanks everyone!

Not a volume pedal, foot rest for lap steel moments

The “unknown volume pedal” on the left is just a block of wood that he uses as a foot rest when playing lap steel standing up. He mentions this is a Premier Guitar rig rundown.

The red pedal on the bottom row of the board on the right appears to be a Shin’s Music Dumbloid from Japan.

One red pedal is a Seymour Duncan Killing Floor, and the other looks like a Shins Music Dumbloid of some kind.

The second red pedal looks like a Shin’s Music Dumbloid. Could that be it?

What about the pedals he has on a table near him! No EHX 16 second delay or Kaos Pad?

…and the other red one with the white knob is a Seymour Duncan Killing Floor. Just happened to see an ad for it in a Premier Guitar email!

I always love some Nels pedal board shots. I was lucky enough to see him in small clubs in New York in the mid- to late-’90s on a number of occasions. Back then, he literally just had a Rat, a Boss compressor, a DD-2, and a volume pedal.

The small red pedal is a Seymour Duncan Killing Floor (high-gain boost).
