Pedalboard of The Church’s Ian Haug 2015

The Church’s Ian HaugA little while back, I posted Peter Koppes’ board from the Church, and I talked about my interest in the band. They’re a fantastic band from Australia with massive discography that always surprises people when I tell them how many albums they have. Early on in my guitar life, there were a few guitarists that I would follow – primarily post-punk type guitarists, but the Church’s Marty Willson Piper was one of those guitarists. I even followed his solo work – a fantastic guitarist and vocalist, with that ‘rock star’ vibe about him, but not pretentious, if you know what I mean. He’s been with the band forever, and I was surprised that he was no longer with the band and was replaced by Ian Haug.

Talking to Tim Grime, the photographer that provided these photos, I mentioned that I wish Marty was still in the band, but I said that without giving Ian a chance at all. In fact, I didn’t hear him play at all.. and that was a pretty shitty thing for me to say. Tim, said “Ian is a great replacement. He brings his style into the songs without overpowering them with his signature.” So with that said, I started to listen, and he was right. Ian sounds great, and works extremely well with the chemistry of the band. He has big shoes to fill, and to convince people like me, who didn’t even give him a chance. This has started to open my eyes elsewhere. For example, I’m a huge Peter Hook fan (Joy Division / ex-New Order), and New Order just released a new single, and I remember catching myself saying – “No Peter Hook.. No New Order”. Well, that’s not how I should think. I’ll give New Order a chance.

So today, I wanted to breakdown Ian Haug’s board, and if you’re long time Church fan like myself, definitely give Ian a shot, he’s nailing it.

I am happy to hear your point of view about Ian. I too am a long standing Church fan, and saw them both times that they came through Denver this year, even taking part in the meet and greet that they offered. Ian was a fantastic guy. He was incredibly friendly and you could see he is thrilled to be in the band. Now to the music… Both shows were absolutely amazing!!! Ian in not as demonstrative with his actions like Marty was, but the sound is there on the classics. He has truly merged his talent well with the rest of the band. Let me also say that "Further + Deeper" is the strongest album they have done in a very long time and ranks up there with their very best. Reading about the making of the album, it is evident that Ian brought and ease and a new level to the creative process and the band is enjoying a bit of a renaissance because of it. Kudos to Ian and to the rest of the band for finding the right man to fill Marty's shoes!!!
