I’m kind of in love with Earthquaker Devices these days. A few months ago I picked up a Dispatch Master and that pedal makes me smile every time I fire that guy up. Even before that we gave away a Disaster Transport SR, but I had a chance to give that pedal a test drive and was massively blown away by this pedal! Earthquaker Devices, top shelf all the way. But what really stands out for me – those pedals spark creativity. Inspirational. I like anything that actually inspires new riffs, new ideas, etc.
This morning, while sipping on my coffee, I came across a cool video by WunjoGuitars talking about the Earthquaker Devices Rainbow Machine. On top of that, the guitar player is playing one of my favorite guitars – a Electrical Guitar Company Standard.
The Earthquaker Devices Rainbow Machine is a crazy, crazy pitch shifter – from subtle chorus effects to self oscillating craziness.

I have one of these, and it’s pretty great. I bought it mostly because of the “Magic” setting, it sounds crazy and weird in every video demo, but in practice, I haven’t found much use for it aside from feeding a ton of distortion through it and having my drummer say “it sounds like there are demons in your amp, man.” The pitch shifter is great, though. It’s not a “smart” pitchshifter, the pitch knob is inexact, and the harmonizing pitches are the same space between every note you play, so the “harmony” doesn’t play in key. As a result, it sounds very strange and disjointed. The tracking knob determines how tightly it follows your playing, so if you’re playing a lot of notes fairly quickly, you’ll want it set to track pretty close or else it just sounds like a mess (not in a good way). But if you’re playing a lot of long, slow notes, having it track less tightly makes it sound even more haunting. It’s a cool pedal, and I’ve gotten more use out of it than I expected.
