Today’s Pedal Line Friday submission is from Iain Gorri of Our Nameless Boy. Here’s the board I use in my band, Our Nameless Boy. It’s a pretty simple setup but maybe the way I use some of the pedals might help others in some way, so I’ll try and stick more to helpful tips and insights than self-indulgent ramblings;
TU-2 – You know the drill; tuner with a buffer. Read as much as you can on buffers, experiment, and decide if you want one in or out of your chain.
Artec SE-GEQ – Has a slider for 280Hz. Cut some of this and you’ll take a HUGE amount of mud out of the neck pickup, allowing you to crank overdrives and keep every string defined – the foundation of my sound, I guess! Cheap and quiet too!
DOD Preamp 250 – Transparent and far more versatile than it looks. Great through a bright channel, astonishing through a normal channel.
Artec DBT-1 – Channel 2 has the extra output volume pot which is nifty for quietening down overdrive tones for cheeky little sections. A really good, well-rounded boost, especially for the price.
Line Selector – Bog standard homemade A/B for switching between drives or, as I do, switching multiple modulation pedals on at once to save yourself some tap dancing.
POG2 (in ‘B’ loop) – Everything from thickening up big riffs to full blown Idioteque. How you set the LP Filter slider is key to any preset.
DD-6 (in ‘B’ loop) – I try to set my Feedback and D.Time at a point where simply switching modes between songs gives me all the delay settings I want quickly.
TC HOF Mini – Leaves your dry signal entirely intact at any level (optional). I tried all the artist Toneprints so if you’re looking for a place to start I recommend the Jetverb 3000 for noise and the LonelySpring also. I use the single knob to control both the decay length and the reverb level, keeping the former short and sweet until 11 o’clock where it then increases gradually along with the level, giving me flexibility in my “always on” reverb plus an extra gnarly setting just in case!
That’s it. For point of reference I play a beautiful one-off build Jazzmaster copy (swamp ash body, Mojotone Pre-CBS pups), currently through an ’81 Custom Hiwatt 100 and Orange 2×12 open back, but this board also rocks through Fender Hot Rod style combos, specifically my Traynor YCV40. I play mostly alt. rock type stuff somewhere along the lines of Brand New, La Dispute and Manchester Orchestra.
