Love your site and would love to be featured on Pedal Line Friday!

Here are the pedal boards we use in the band Mod Gun. We are from the Boston area and gig regularly. Our music is available for free download at modgun.bandcamp.com. Please take it!

The first board is home made from ply wood and carpet. The red boss master switch toggles all of the modulations and time based effects on the second row on and off. I run into a dynacomp before my gain stages on the first row, and there is a second dynacomp outside of the switch’s loop at the end of my signal chain. I run my board through a 77 bassman 100 head with a 2×12 avatar cab loaded with eminence swamp thangs. For guitars I use a Gibson Les Paul 40th Anniversary model and a De Armond Starfire.

Here’s my submission for Pedal Line Friday! It’s a bass board! I’m just a regular bass playing, gear junkie who started a small bass blog this year to talk gear and help train the other bass players at church.

It’s a bradycases.com true bypass board with 12 bypass loops. It has 2 bass inputs, 1 ouput, and a power outlet on the top right. It’s wired with Lava cables solderless cable (about 60 feet of it!).

Here’s the chain: starting with a Radial ToneBone Bassbone: a preamp that I always keep on and it has 2 inputs that I can EQ differently. It’s perfect for playing a regular bass and my electric upright on the same night. Then into the MarkBass Compressore: a great, tube compressor that I also always keep on. The tonebone plus the compressor gives me a really warm, big bass tone. Then into the JHS Bass Bomb Boost – great boost pedal that runs at 18v – tons of headroom. Then into the T1M Blend pedal that blends the wet/dry signal with the Zvex Fuzz Factory and/or Pro Co Rat Distortion. That blend helps you get a great fuzz and distortion sound without losing the low end of the signal. I usually blend in about 30% of the dry sound with those pedals. Then into Xotic X-Blender with the “Groucho” distortion (a modded Boss odb-3 that has no internal Boss parts anymore). Same as the other blend, but this one’s on steroids. It has a boost and an EQ to use while blending the wet/dry signal. Then into Crowther Prunes & Custard – nothing to say, but a great and weird pedal!. Then into the Line6 M5 – I bought this as the last pedal I’ll “need” to buy. It has a ton of reverbs, delay, distortions, etc. Then into the Boss Loop Station RC-3 – with this pedal I will trigger pre-recorded loops. You can build loops in garageband, etc and save it from your computer to the pedal and trigger it live. I can play a bassline over the loop – it’s awesome! Then into Mid-Fi Clari(not) Envelope Vibrato Fuzz – the craziest, fuzz, tape delay envelope filter on the planet – just crazy sounds from this pedal. Into a Ernie Ball Volume Pedal w/T1M buffer mod – I highly suggest getting the buffer mod (9v) installed if you use this pedal. It made a huge difference on the signal strength and tone. Into the TC Electronic PolyTune – I love this new tuner, you just strum the strings together and it tells you which strings are out of tune. Into the Electro-Harmonix Micro POG – gives you an octave up and down – I use it to get an awesome organ sounding tone. Into the Electro-Harmonix Stereo Memory Man – a very versatile delay with tap tempo into another delay – Guyatone MD3 delay, I love this pedal for the “feedback” feature. into the final pedal, the Plutoneium Chi-Wah-Wah. This is the smallest wah-wah on the market, and it’s made just for bass. It’s also “clickless”, so the wah is activated when you put pressure on the pedal.

Here’s a video link to the chain of the board:
I hope you’ll accept my submission.

I’m not in a band right now, but I work for and play at a large church in Atlanta (www.evangelcc.org). My own personal style is blues rooted. We play a variety of music styles so I keep up a pretty large board to keep my options open. Here’s my line in the order I route the signal:

* Pedal Train PT-Pro Pedal BoardPedal Train PT-Pro Pedal Board *
* Crybaby Wah * – My first pedal ever, using it since high school
* DOD EQ * – I use this at the front end, mainly to scoop some mids and give me some line boost because of the long chain.
* Ernie Ball VP Jr. * – Great for swells and just muting the chain.
* TC Electronic PolyTune * (Fed from the “tuner” out on the VP Jr.)-Great tuner, lets you tune one note at a time or strum all six and see anything flat or sharp.
* Digitech Harmony Man Intelligent Pitch Shifter * – This pedal is just fun, makes tons of usable sounds from harmonies to normal octave up and down. Has to be near the front as it requires a clean signal.
* Mad Professor Sweet Honey Overdrive (PCB Version) * – This is a great natural sounding over drive. The great feature of this one is that it has a “focus” know that responds to your guitars attack. I have it dialed in so that playing soft/medium is pretty clean and digging in breaks up. Very versatile. (This pedal is fed from the Dist. Send/Return from the Harmony Man so that I can have dirty octave sounds if I want.)
* Visual Sound Route66 * – Another one of my original pedals. Combination Compressor (based on the Ross and the MXR Dyna Comp) and a Overdrive that’s a TS-808 clone with a bass boost, which I keep on. One of these effects is usually on at all times.
* ZVex Vexter Series Fuzz Factory * – I honestly don’t use this much, but it’s great to bring the noise if you need that.
* Carl Martin Classic Chorus * – This pedal has a great chorus and a switchable vibrato sound. I use both sounds some. The great part about this one is that it has a great gain circuit that gives lets me dial in that “tubes are just about to break up sound” with ease.
* Lovepedal Les Lius * – This one is supposed to sound like a Fender Tweed amp set to explode. Not so sure about that. To me this is the Keith Richards box. It just sounds like the Stones to me.
* Line6 DL4 Delay Modeler * – This is not the best sounding, most nuanced delay out there, but for ease of live use, versatility and cost it’s a winner for me. Also, it’s built like a tank.
* Visual Sound H20 Liquid Chorus * – Love this one, much less subtle of a chorus that the Carl Martin one plus it also has a great analog sounding delay that I’m currently using as an echo.
* Godlyke Power Supply + Visual Sound 1Spot Supply * – I’m using bits and pieces of both of these systems, but I find Visual Sound to be superior in all cases.

My current amp is a Fender Deluxe Reverb Reiss

I came across a great video by Rock n Roll Vintage where they go into great detail of what this pedal can do. I’m a big fan of Rock n Roll Vintage out of Chicago (sort on my bucket lists of guitar shops to check out). The ZVex Instant Lo-Fi Junky is an interesting pedal providing cool effects with modulated, warbled and compressing effected signal. Want to tweak something up? This might be the pedal.

Here is the official description of the ZVex Instant Lo-Fi Junky:

Hello, and welcome to the world of the Instant Lo-Fi JunkyTM. Any of you who’ve heard the sound of the Lo-Fi Loop JunkyTM will understand this pedal immediately… its purpose is to imitate that sound in real time. Joel Korte, the extraordinary engineer behind this new device, was able to create a combination of THAT chip compression, Belling bucket-brigades, and ultra low-current National Semiconductor op-amp filters to exquisitely copy the texture and feel of the original Lo-Fi into this new and extraordinary box, adding some new sounds that have never been heard before.

Here is the video by Rock n Roll Vintage (submitted by JustNickMusic):

Hi, this is my pedalboard in hopes of making it into Pedal Line Friday. I play solo and with an 8-person band, This Is Your Captain Speaking- indie rock, alternative, ambient stuff is where we shine. For my solo work I play music that’s perfect for a rainy day (it’s kind of the only music there is if you live in Seattle!) Apparently both myself and my band sounds like indie rock groups such as Death Cab for Cutie, Broken Social Scene, and Arcade Fire…

Now time for the real stars of the show…I start out with a Fender Telecaster, then, using a Mogami cable, I run into my Boss TU-2 Tuner. Going down the line I hit the good ole’ Zvex Vexter Series Box of Rock, perfect for those Marshally sounds at a lower volume. Then I go into the Fulltone GT-500 for it’s tweakable boost/overdrive and, if I really want things to get dirty, I’ll turn on the distortion side to blow up my house. I then go to my MXR Carbon Copy Analog Delay which I use for light delay/slapback for solos; next is the Boss DD-5 Digital Delay for reverse/dotted delay times. Then I’ll put my signal through the Boss RV-5 Digital Reverb to make my sound fuller using the room or hall reverb settings, or I’ll use the modulation setting to play ambient progressions/lead lines. After all is said and done I go into the Line 6 DL4 Delay Modular which I mainly use as a looper for soundscape/ambient stuff.

I connect all my pedals (with the exception of a cheap-o cable from Tuner to BOR, and a Planet Waves cable from RV-5 to DL4) using Hosa Pancake Cables, which have a bad reputation, but to me they’re brilliant and perfect if you want to have more space!

To power it all I use a Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2+, allowing me to power the MXR Carbon Copy with 12v and my GT-55 using 18v.

I am using a homemade pedalboard and Velcro strips to put it all together; I also use electric tape to make sure my settings stay in the right place.

I am playing all this through a Marshall Class 5 amplifier.

I put together a Super Hard On clone about a year ago and was super impressed with how it sounded. That circuit was a much older circuit, and I did have some strange issues with it (due to my ability at the time – not because of the design), but overall it sounded really good. The Super Duper basically takes two ZVex Super Hard On pedals and cascades them into each other or you can use it as two individual Super Hard On pedals.

Having two circuits in a single box is great. For years I used the Crowther Audio Hotcake and I ended up buying a Crowther Audio Double Hot Cake, which has similar handling of the circuits. 2 footswitches for individual circuit control, or you can combine them. Options are always nice to have.

Here is the official description of the ZVex Super Duper 2-in-1 pedal:

Creator Zach Vex has a warning for those considering the Vexter Series Super Duper 2-in-1 Boost: “I WARNED YOU TO BE CAREFUL. When using this pedal, start off slow, and monitor your amp for potential damage.” This is no joke—with two Super Hard On circuits in one enclosure, this pedal is dangerously loud!

Channel 1
Channel 1 is a conventional Super Hard On, with a gain control on the far right and a yellow LED to let you know when it’s engaged. If you’re familiar with the SHO, you know that it’s a very sparkly sounding, high input-impedance preamp with incredible headroom, wide-ranging gain (unity to 60X!), and a maximum volume that will knock out your fillings. Channel one has no Master Volume control, but it’s cascaded into Channel 2, which does.

Channel 2 and Master Volume
This channel has the very same circuit as Channel 1, but the bleeder resistor on the output has been replaced with a Master Volume control, allowing you to turn down the output volume even if the gain is cranked. When Channel 2 or both channels are on, the Master Volume is active.

What’s it sound like?
You might wonder just how insane the Super Duper 2-in-1 sounds with both channels active and cranked up. Zach says, “I can’t get my Les Paul to stop feeding back at any audible volume level on my Marshall . . . I’m happy about that.” Of course, wide open isn’t the only setting on the Super Duper 2-in-1. It gives you a total of four volume levels, ranging, at your choice, anywhere from perfectly clean to ragingly overdriven:

* Level 1: Your guitar is true-bypassed with both channels off.
* Level 2: Channel 1 engaged.
* Level 3: Channel 1 off, Channel 2 engaged.
* Level 4: Both channels engaged

There’s no tone shaping in the Super Duper 2-in-1. Its two perfectly linear, high-gain, high input impedance preamps can be cascaded with a total gain that ranges from unity to 3600. That’s right, the maximum gain with both channels wide open is a whopping 3600, which is so completely distorted, hissy, feedbacky, and insane that you’ll never have a steady relationship again. Or a lease. Or a pet. Fortunately, with the Master Volume you can hear what that sounds like at a reasonable volume.

ZVex Vexter Series VSD Super Duper 2-in-1 Boost Guitar Effects Pedal Features:

* 2 Super Hard On circuits in one
* Channel 1 cascades into Channel 2 for incredibly dangerous amounts of gain
* Master Volume control lets you enjoy the madness at lower volumes

I came across this video today. It was quite cool on many different levels. I’ve always been interested and intrigued by Nels Cline, so this was a cool view into his style. Looks like he stopped by the ZVex shop in Minnesota to talk about the ZVex Box of Metal distortion pedal.
I definitely thought it was odd that Nels would be into this pedal (judging the artist and the pedal by the cover), but after hearing his reasoning.. it made good sense. I think it’s important to not stereotype pedals to the genre of music you’re in, there could always be hidden/useful traits that can be greatly applied in your style of music.

Heard good things about it, but never really looked too closely. I’m talking abou tthe Zvex Lo-Fi Loop Junky Looper pedal. There are some great digital based looper pedals out there, and I wanted to see what the deal is with this.

Here is the official description:

This is the ZVex Lo-Fi Loop Junky Looper Pedal. It’s really low fidelity… the recording of your guitar is filled with hiss, moan, distortion and warped-record strangeness, but everyone will be able to tell the loop from your real guitar. Because the processing of your direct guitar is done with my new bootstrap circuit, with the very highest impedance circuit ZVex has ever developed (even higher than the super hard-on circuit) your direct guitar will have detail incomparable with anything you’ve ever heard. The juxtaposition of your direct guitar against the smashed, distorted, shimmering/warbling recording of the loop mechanism will make it clear once and for all who is the guitarist and what is the machinery.

THERE IS NO ANALOG TO DIGITAL CONVERSION. It’s pure analog storage, just like the old bucket-brigade technology, for 20 seconds straight. It would take 25 800ms analog delay pedals to hold the loop that this thing can play.

I found this video by GuitarGearComMx. Side note.. big fan of Interpol!
