A few of them have been talked about for a while (ie: Joe Bonamassa Cry Baby and the re-issue of the Way Huge Red Llama), but one caught my ear. That was for the Eric Johnson Fuzz Face. I remember hearing various stories (could be legend and/or tales passed down from nerd guitarist to nerd guitarist) where Eric would have people find the classic Red Fuzz Face. He was always in search of a particular sound found in a few batches of germanium transistor fuzz faces.

For those of you not too familiar with germanium transistors, transistor were used to replace tubes back in the day. Now germanium is less efficient and consistent than silicon transistors made in the late 60s/70s. So one pair of germanium transistors can sound very different than another pair with the same value. So a run of Fuzz Faces can have slightly different tonal characteristics.

I’m sure Eric Johnson has a mean collection of Fuzz Faces by now, so having him working with Dunlop for 6 years to develop his signature Fuzz Face is pretty cool. After doing some more research, I was surprised that they’re using BC183 silicon transistors in there. I know NOS germaniums are hard to come by, and I’m wondering for ‘production’ that was the deciding factor? Or it could be that silicon offers a more stable transistor for consistency.. but they definitely sound different. Curious what you think!

I’m always interested what items stood out for the year that is about to end. Always seems to create some good discussions, etc. I came across the Guitar World staff pick (by Paul Riario) Top 10 Effect Pedals of 2011. You can read the full article here.

Basically, he broke it down to the following:

1. Dunlop Cantrell JC95 Cry Baby
2. MXR Custom Badass ’78 Distortion
3. Electro-Harmonix Ravish Sitar
4. Eventide Space
5. Strymon Lex Rotary
6. Keeley Luna Overdrive
7. Caroline Guitar Company Wave Cannon
8. Wampler Hot Wired Brent Mason Overdrive/Distortion
9. Visual Sound Dual Tap Delay
10. Way Huge Green Rhino

The Cantrell wah has been brought up multiple times as being a great wah. I’ve seen it on a few Pedal Line Friday boards and I thought that was a solid pick.

It was also great to see Caroline Guitar Company’s Wave Cannon in there. We had the privilege to demo the Wave Cannon (and gave it away) a while back. Definitely a great pedal for sure.

I was slightly surprised to see the MXR Custom Badass ’78 Distortion. I’ve never played that pedal, but I often see mix reviews here. Some people love it while others.. not so much. Let me know your opinion of the ’78 distortion if you have it by commenting below.

I think Strymon is going to be showing up a lot on these lists to come. I have the Strymon BlueSky, and basically everything they put out is golden. I’ve never seen a complaint about Strymon.

A couple of pedals that I want to look into is the Keeley Luna Overdrive and the Wampler Hot Wired. Both of those pedals I’m not too familiar with.

The Electro-Harmonix Ravish Sitar is another one that people are interested, but I don’t see many people actually owning this pedal. I know it’s new, but may have limited applications for the masses. Again, let me know what you think.

The Visual Sound Dual Tap Delay is a pedal I want to check out re-al bad. All the demos of this are great. A very simple delay with complex ability.

Please let me know your thoughts about that list…. good, bad and the ugly

As we do modern worship, we need to be able to have a wide variety of tones available based on the week. This setup seems to work best for me. I use a Morley Bad Horsie Wah, into an HAO Rust Booster to add some presence and sparkle to the signal, (also to add hair to some of the OD/DS pedals too.) After that is the Nobels ODR-1 plus 10th Anniversary OD. Hands down my favorite TS clone. That goes into an HBE/Rig-Talk Plank Cranker, serial number 7 of 30. This is actually a bluesy TS clone on one side, and an amazing boost on the other, with footswitchable bass boost on both. After that it is to the old faithful japanese Boss DS-1 into a Boss CE-5 and a Boss DD-7/ The Boss FS-5U is for the Tap Tempo functions of the DD-7. The EHX Holy Grail completes the signal path that ends with a trip into the tube goodness of a Mesa-Boogie Studio 22. I swap in and out a Visual Sound Route 66 and a Way Huge Swollen Pickle MK2 for other flavors as I need them.

John Mayer is another guitar player that I’m not a big fan of, but I definitely respect his guitar tone and quality of play. This guy can really lay down some awesome guitar. I remember catching a few live performances on TV that really impressed me, so when I came across this Premier Guitar Rig Rundown I wanted to share this. It’s a little old (9/8/10), but I would assume some of the pedals are still in the line up.. if not all of them.

This video really shows what’s all involved with his guitar tone. Premier Guitar’s Rebecca Dirks interviews Rene Martinez (guitar tech for Stevie Ray Vaughn, Prince, Mick Jones). Video submitted by PremierGuitar

As you notice, Rene doesn’t go into detail about the pedals except for the fact that they’re using a Bradshaw switching system.. and that they’re on in the trays. I wish he would have talk about a few of them – ie: the Roger Linn pedals, etc. I was able to get good screen snaps off all the pedals and was able to identify all of them. Here is the breakdown of pedals below.

Last week I got an email from Ryan Rukavina of Rukavina Guitars letting me know about a cool video by tcelectronic. This video features Eric Baech, guitar tech of Troy Van Leeuwen (Queens of the Stone Age), and he goes over Troy’s set up. This includes his main pedal board, rack/amps and guitars.

I broke down, into detail, what was seen (since Eric doesn’t go into detail of each pedal). I have everything worked out pretty well except for two unknown pedals. They’re listed below, so if you can help shed some light, please comment below and I’ll get the list updated.

Here is the video by tcelectronic:

Below are screen snaps of the video with a break down of pedals.

Today, I’m going to feature another great video by David Fisher and Taylor Barefoot. If you’re not subscribed to their channel (Tibbon), you really should, they have great demo videos. You can easily subscribe by clicking here.

Looks like they received a box full of Dunlop pedals (MXR, WayHuge, etc) and are demoing these pedals by genres of music. I thought this was a cool way of going about it, showing pedals in combination. They broke down the genres in the following groups: Rock, Classic Rock, Country, Heavy and Bass. They also break down some of the similar pedals (ie: Script Phase 45, Script Phase 90 and Phase 90, etc). Very nice to see.

Here is the following video by Tibbon. It’s a long one, so get yourself cup of coffee out.. or beer (depending on your timezone or situation) and relax:

Okay. I guess I’m in a Mogwai sort of mood today. I just posted Dominic’s board, and on Facebook, Michael pointed out a great video by Music Radar where they go into Mogwai’s full rig.
From my earlier posts of John’s and Stuart’s rig, it looks like there have been significant changes to the boards, so this is a great opportunity to make some updates.

John’s board had definitely changed from the earlier post. Removing the T-Rex Dr. Swamp and the new additions of Way Huge pedals is interesting. It’s also interesting to see he’s riding with Death By Audio pedals as well now for his distortion section. In the earlier post, he was using the EHX HOG with footswitch controller and expression pedal, and it’s not on this tour.

For those of you not familiar with the Angry Troll, we did a review on this pedal a little while back. You can read about it and watch/listen to the demo here – Review of the Way Huge Angry Troll Linear Boost

Here is the official description of the Way Huge Angry Troll Linear Boost:

The mighty Angry Troll boost pedal serves up monstrous portions of volume and gain to pummel the input of your amp. It adds bite and punch while transforming your anemic and mild mannered tone into a beastly sonic onslaught. The Angry Troll boost pedal’s two controls interact like a vintage mic preamp. The Anger knob-a rotary switch with six Fists of Fury positions-adjusts the amount of gain created by the Angry Troll effect pedal’s op-amp, while the Volume knob regulates the overall output level. The guitar pedal’s high-grade components are used for a precisely tuned circuit that works like an extension of your amp.

The Way Huge Angry Troll effect pedal can be powered by a single 9V battery or with a Dunlop ECB003 external DC power supply (not included). The power input is a 5.5mm x 2.1mm jack with the positive voltage on the outer sleeve. The Way Huge boost pedal will lock into bypass mode when it is time to change the battery. It also includes power protection circuitry to prevent damage from AC power supplies.

I’ve been sort of looking around for fuzz pedals and maybe something in the distortion box genre, and the “harmonic saturator” caught my eye.

Here is the official description of this pedal:

The Fat Sandwich Distortion represents an advanced era in guitar pedal design for Way Huge. In addition to carrying on the Way Huge tradition of amazing tone and rugged construction, the Fat Sandwich Distortion Pedal delivers heaps of crunchy distortion goodness via its innovative multi-stage clipping circuit. Meticulously designed from the ground up, the passive tone stack was tuned to bring out the “sweet spot” with any guitar and amp combination. The Volume control produces tons of output, making it ideal for driving the headroom out of the most powerful tube amps. Additionally, the Fat Sandwich guitar effect pedal has two internal mini controls: the Curve knob lets the user fine-tune the corner frequency of the overdrive filtering and the Sustain control adjusts the gain of the final distortion stage. The Fat Sandwich is versatile and over the top — the consummate distortion pedal for any genre of playing style.
