Effects Bay

Yesterday I asked the following community question – If you had to pick one pedal to have for the rest of your life, what pedal would that be? I wanted to see what you all had to say about this. This is a great way to learn about other pedals, and to see what people are passionate about. Clearly, any pedal mentioned, is something worth considering in the future when in search of a new pedal.

I’ve had a few emails asking me what my answer to the question is – since I didn’t answer it in the previous post. Like I mentioned I thought it was pretty easy, but it’s not. One person mentioned his TU-2. Even though it’s not an effect, I would put that on the list, but since that’s not very exciting. I think I would put the Paul Cochrane Tim overdrive as the top. I use to use a Ibanez TS-9 and replaced it with the Tim for the lead overdrive boost and that thing is pretty awesome. #2 would be my T-Rex Replica delay. Lately I’ve been messing around with delay parts so been having lots of fun with that and a Boss DD-3.

Andrew J. Masterson With my current collection, I’d have to go with my Boss DD-20. It’s not my ideal choice, but I have to say a delay is the single most important effect I have to have.
Justin Vigeant Has to be an overdrive… and the one I have had most luck with is the Fulltone Full Drive 2.
Joshua Dawson HA! As soon as Omar bawked, I got upset. The poor man clearly likes pedals, but he’s never fallen in love. Mine is easy: my Ibanez DDL, the green one, not the blue DL10. It’s a sweet, versatile, durable delay pedal with a great, warm analog feel and an unlatched hold-delay mode that I modded for fast, glitchy stutter delay. I could not live without that pedal.
Jeffrey Bailey I would have to say a carbon copy. It sounds amazing and there is no replacement for a good delay. I run mine at 18v and it is the only pedal I must have.

Lee I’m going to assume multi effects pedals are out of the question? If so, easy answer for me – Boss FL2 flanger. I can get any range of chorus-ey, tremelo-ey, semi-phaser-ey (and of course flanger-ey) sound I need. If I want crunch, I can just push the amp harder. (I hope we’re not on a desert island.)

Mike Definitely my Dwarfcraft Eau Claire Thunder, it’s the base of my tone. Plus it’s versatile enough and I love the feedback loop.

Last week, @Literate_Monkey asked if I’d seen this episode of DunlopTV.. and I hadn’t. The episode was of Dweezil Zappa talking about his effects set up and demonstrating some of what it can do. Pretty damn complicated set up, but for you gear heads out there.. it’ll be interesting for sure.

I was thinking it was a little while since I posed a question to the community, so I thought I’d ask a simple one. Not sure if you guys are like me, and wonder what others are using. I mainly like to do this just to open eyes on new brands, styles, etc. Maybe I’ve heard of something, and then when I see others using it, it might motivate me to personally give it a shot. Or just finding something you never heard of.  Exploring can really help one grow. So today I thought I’d ask what picks people are using. What brands, and what gauge. Wow, the answers sure came in. Jahn Xavier It’s all about portability for me. I use a Fender Blues Jr & a Blues Deluxe, depending on the desired tone or size of the venue – both have been heavily modded/rebuilt by Ben Fargen at Fargen Amplification. Also replaced the first 12AX7 in the Jr with a 12AY7, which got rid of that “boxy” sound they can have (as well as that notorious Fender ‘volume jump’”. ALso have Celestion G12H30 speakers in both.

Today, I asked the question “Question: Distortion before Wah or Distortion after Wah. Let the discussion begin!”. This was sparked by reading the ProGuitarShop.com blog entry titled “A Guide to Guitar Effects Placement“. This was a pretty interesting read and further down the article you see mention of Jimi Hendrix that went against popular convention by putting his wah infront of his distortion. It’s classically said to put the wah after the distortion, so I was curious what others do.

So, over the last few months, I’ve been having a blast with this site. I started this site (actually years ago and did absolutely nothing with it), but recently revamped it to be a blog since I’ve been itching to have a stomp box centric site for a while now.

Since I re-started the site, the response has been fantastic, and it’s been fun meeting great people through the site and via Twitter. Site visitors are increasing on a daily basis, and my idea of creating a community of guitar effect nerds seems to be developing. But, I feel like we can do much more.. and if you can help spread the word, that would be greatly appreciated. I’m hoping that we can get more user contributed posts (reviews and Pedal Line Friday submissions, plus more), and the only way to generate the this is by gaining a healthy visitor base to the site. I’m not sure if others go through this, but do you feel like you’re in a ‘rut’ when it comes to your pedal line? Not necessarily being in a rut by choosing to do so, but being in a rut of not really knowing what’s out there. If you don’t know what’s out there outside of your own pedal knowledge, it’s hard to think of what to get. That’s when it’s great to interact with other musicians. See what’s on the floor for those guys. Ask them why they have ‘this’, or if ‘that’ is any good, etc.

Hell, I’m reading and watching pedal reviews everyday, and I’m in a rut as well. That’s why yesterday on Twitter I asked the question “What’s your next pedal purchases? What are you saving up for?“. I thought it would be good to hear what others are wanting right now. Maybe that will point me to a new pedal direction, point me to a new sound possibility, or point me to a better replacement of a pedal. I have to say, the tweeps on Twitter have been super cool, so I thought I’d post some of the responses.

I’ll start with me though. I’ve been eyeballing a coupe of pedals pretty hard. I’d like to see myself owning the Electro-Harmonic Memory Boy or MXR Carbon Copy and I’ve also been looking at some of those ZVex pedals -  Fuzz Factory or maybe that Mastotron Fuzz.

I’m excited to announce the re-birth of EffectsBay.com! I created this blog to talk about some of the things I LOVE talking about, and that’s guitar effects pedals.

As a musician (guitarist), I really enjoy playing with new effects to get some of the tones I’m looking for. Along with playing various effects, I really enjoy talking with other musicians about their set ups. Nothing like a bunch of guitar nerds standing around another guitarist setup talking about deals on their pedals, their love of the tone or issues they’re facing regarding a particular pedal or set up.

EffectsBay will be more than pedal talk, I’m hoping that I’ll be getting into some guitar and amp/cab set ups as well.  I also wanted to create a platform to announce deals. Since I’m affiliated with some great companies like Musician’s Friend, Guitar Center and Woodwind and Brasswind, I’ll be posting coupons and specials as they’re presented to me.
