This is for Steely Dan’s Jon Herington. I liked this video a lot. Instead of talking with a tech, the interview was with Jon Herington. I particularly liked this video. I thought it provided some great insight on why he used certain guitars, amps and effects. I thought it was very informational. Jon is a great player and to hear him talk about gear, is a treat.

I liked how he uses the Boss TU-2 as the buffer for the pedals. I personally do this as well, and for those of you don’t know, the buffer will raise the input signal to the pedals. Especially if you use long instrument cables, this can help with cable capacitance. For more information on cable capacitance, check out this post: Visual Sound (buffered bypass) and Route 808. I also liked how he ran the delays and reverb through the amp’s effects loop. I’ve played around with this in the past, but for some reason always end up with those pedals in front, maybe I’ll re-address it again.

I’ve been using a Boss GT-10 Digital Multi Effects pedal, but wanted to add into it’s effects loop some stand alone stompboxes, mostly analog. I have: MXR Carbon Copy, MXR Phase 90 Script Custom Shop, ISP Decimator, Tech 21 Liverpool for the Beatles/Brian May sounds, BBE Green Screamer as Tubescreamer OD clone, Digitech Jimi Hendrix Pedal Modeler, Eventide SPACE for Modulated Reverb with the greatest presets for spacing out, and the control pedal for my Fender SuperSonic 22 FSR in Surf Green.

UPDATE
Dr. David Mednick sent me a update to his pedal line since he originally sent it to me. A few changes to report, so I wanted to list these below!

I swapped out the Carbon Copy, which was great, for the TC Electronics Flashback, which is much more flexible and is fantastic. I also swapped out the BBE Green Screamer and added a Rockbox Boiling Point for overdrive and distortion and a Way Huge Swollen Pickle for Fuzz and Distortion, they compliment each other well, Boiling Point is more Tube Screamer like with picking/strumming dynamics, and the Way Huge is much heavier.

It’s a great sounding OD if you want some super balls. I found a great demo by Burgerman666 of this same pedal, but with slightly different graphics. I know some of you will dig this video.

Here is the official description of the Tech 21 XXL Guitar Edition Overdrive Stomp Box with Warp:

Obese, megalithic, dynamic distortion!

The Tech 21 XXL Guitar Edition Overdrive Stomp Box lets you achieve a variety of results within the same setting depending on the manner and force of your pick attack with the Warp control. The median Warp point produces traditional distortion ideal for chords and rhythm parts, while the extreme settings work well with individual notes, making them smoother, fatter, thicker, and juicier. Medium settings produce an overdrive similar to a Class A tube amp. The Warp control works by manipulating the structure and balance of odd and even harmonics and influencing their relativity to the dynamics of your instrument and your playing style. A very musical tone control shifts the center frequency of the high cut from 10kH to 1kH, which maintains the midrange without getting muddy. Optional DC2 power supply (see accessory box on this page) or 9V battery (not included) operation.

Here is the video by Burgerman666:

I’ve broken down Yannis Philippakis and Jimmy Smith‘s boards in the past. Recently, I’ve a had a few requests regarding the bass player, Walter Gervers, set up. When I think of Foals, I think about the carefully interwoven guitar lines of Yannis and Jimmy. Also think of the passive-aggressive style vocals, but I also think of the very solid and groove locked rhythm section of Walter of bass and Jack Bevan on drums. Solid!

I had a very hard time finding photos of the pedals Walter uses though, but I was able to find one older shot, which I think should be semi-accurate today. If you have any info, please let me know. Walter’s set up is basic, but sounds great. He primarily uses three pedals on the floor, but I’ve read in several places that he uses a SansAmp (probably a ParaDriver) *.

I now like him even more. Great to read/see humble musicians that are making music, but willing to admit they’re not awesome. I dig that.

I primarily play a 6-string short-scale bass. Currently using a Schecter Hellcat VI and a Burns Barracuda which are both more or less in the Fender Bass VI category. I like a vintage sound, so I focused on accumulating some vintage Boss effects. Here’s my path… Bass > Korg Pitchblack tuner > Boss PH-1r Phaser (Phasers to me anyway – are more like Wah pedals than modulation as they cut or notch a frequency that is swept to electronically so I put it early in the chain) > Tech 21 VT Bass which I use primarily for OD and some distortion and tone shaping rather than pre-amping. If I was pre-amping with it I would probably put it at the end of the chain just before the looper.) > Analogman Standard Chorus which has an optional “Deep” toggle switch on it which makes it sound significantly better with a bass when it’s engaged. I also run it at 18v for more headroom. This is really the ultimate bass chorus. > Boss BF-2 Flanger (there is a bass version of this but I feel this non-bass version sounds better) > Boss DD-2 Delay which I had modded by Dan at This1smyne to have more a tape-like effect with the flick of a switch. Last on the chain is a Boss RC-2 Loop Station with a custom This1smyne duel footswitch. I have all of this mounted on a Pedaltrain Jr and powered with a TRex Fuel Tank Jr. I mounted the Fuel Tank Jr. invisibly under the board using 3M Dual-Lock. Perfect fit. I also have a rare and quite bizarre sounding Danelectro Sitar Swami which is not on the board right now. This board set-up also works just fine with my 1982 Guild D-35 acoustic which I had electrified with a K&K Sound Pure-Mini pick-up. The design of the K&K is fantastic. It does not at all degrade or impact the non-electrified acoustic sound or in any way alter the aesthetics of the guitar as it is totally invisible. The cord plug is built into the side strap button. Great tone and not at all intrusive. It is a perfect solution. Also, the “Deep Toggle” on the Analogman Chorus gives me the flexibility to adjust it with a flip of the toggle so it sounds great with the acoustic as well.

I’m not in a band. Instead, I concentrate on home-recording via a M-Audio Firewire Solo interface into a MacBook Pro i7 with GarageBand. I use a small Acoustic brand bass amp for amplification when practicing and for micing into the Firewire interface when I need it.

Programmable DI? This seems pretty interesting, so I had to look further. All the bass players I’ve played with (with the exception of one) dreaded the DI set up, which I can understand, but I’m wondering if something like this would make things a lot better.

Here is the official description:

The Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI is a 3-channel, programmable rig-in-a-box similar to the TRI-A.C. for guitar, but made for bassists. The all-analog circuitry features drive, bass, treble, presence, blend, and level controls. Digital only in its programmability, you just tweak the knobs until you find a tone, double-tap on a footswitch, and it’s saved in that channel. Works great on stage or in the studio. Rugged all-metal construction. Operates via a 9V alkaline battery, phantom power, or the optional Tech 21 DC2 power supply. 7.25″L x 5″W x 2″H. 25 oz.

I found this video by elninodelamuerte where he demos some of the settings.

I guess I’m not a ‘preset’ sorta guy, but a guy that likes knobbies. There were lots of great suggestions, but one that I wasn’t too familiar with, so I wanted to take a closer look.

Josh Washburn mentioned the Tech 21 Boost D.L.A. I’ve looked at few Tech 21 pedals, and they sound great, but I didn’t know they were making a delay, so a closer look was needed. I found a great video by Burgerman666 and he appears to be liking this pedal. A few things caught my eye initially. Tap tempo is something I do like on the DL 4, I also like the level control and tone.

Here is the official description of the pedal:

Tech 21 brings a fresh perspective to the standard delay pedal. By incorporating a clean Boost function, up to 9dB, your solos will jump out with greater dimension. The Boost D.L.A. is designed with user-tweakable, “lo-fi” analog technology. By manipulating the controls, you can infuse degrees of warmth and life with the characteristic of vintage delays. The Tech 21 delay pedal’s circuitry intentionally injects the inherent imperfections of vintage units, which is what makes them so seductive and nostalgic. A single, continuously variable Time control provides a full sweep, up to 1000 milliseconds, of delay. The Boost D.L.A. effects pedal parameters are engineered so that you can explore and custom-tailor such delay styles as digital, vintage tape, and bucket brigade.

Tech 21′s Boost D.L.A. with Tap Tempo offers an abundance of easy-to-use, intuitive controls in an incredibly compact guitar effects pedal—and it’s battery operable, to boot. All of the features this delay pedal has are truly useful, not simply a bunch of clever ploys that are overkill and that you’ll rarely, if ever, have a need or desire for.

This individual footswitch is dedicated solely for Tap Tempo function, avoiding confusion during your performance. It gives you the ability to set it, even when it’s off, which aids coordination with your drummer. Triplets work in conjunction with the Tap Tempo. Engaged, it shifts the timing so triplets play in sync with the actual tempo. Trails works in conjunction with bypass and allows the natural decay of the delay signal rather than cutting it off abruptly. Feedback control has greater sensitivity and can be thrown into a state of self-oscillation.

Here is the video by Burgerman666:

So I had to look into this. The deluxe is definitely ‘deluxe’ over the standard pedal with it being programmable with a FX loop.

Here is the official description of what the Tech 21 SansAmp Character Series VT Bass Deluxe Distortion can do:

The deluxe version Tech 21 SansAmp VT Bass Distortion pedal boasts a combination of a warm, all-analog signal path and convenient digital recall. There are 6 program locations and dual inputs for 2 instruments to be online, ready to go. Create 3 custom tones for each input or use all 6 locations for a single instrument.

You can program the FX loop to engage your favorite effect each time you select its designated preset. The SansAmp VT Bass Deluxe is super-simple to operate—changes can easily be made on the fly—without having to refer to the owner’s manual. You just turn the knobs to a setting you like, double-click on a footswitch, and it’s saved in that channel.

The Tech 21 SansAmp VT Bass Deluxe distortion pedal’s level and drive controls work like a traditional, well-equipped amp. Low, mid and high are active controls, providing a wider array of tonal possibilities. The Character knob is continuously-variable moving seamlessly between different model voicings, covering vintage, high-gain, and face-melting lead tones.

The Tech 21 SansAmp technology captures the warm, rich, natural tones of the most sought-after tube amplifiers. Within the parameters of each model’s particular design, the controls provide you with access to specific tone-shaping characteristics within the tube amplifier sound spectrum.

Tech 21 SansAmp products are designed to work seamlessly in both recording and stage environments. They can be used with almost any instrument, for any music style, and for multiple applications. Record directly to tape and disc or enhance previously recorded tracks. For live performances, they can drive a power amp and speakers, augment your existing amplifier setup, or run directly into the mixer of a PA system.

I wasn’t able to find too much as for videos, but I did find this one by laquitarepointcom, titled [NAMM 2010] – Tech 21 – VT Bass Deluxe:

So to make up for that this morning, I’m going to talk about the Tech 21 Bass SansAmp Character Series Bass Pedal. I’ve talked abut SansAmp in the past, and their stuff is quite impressive, so I was expecting the same level here with this pedal.

Here is the official description of this pedal:

The Tech 21 VT Bass SansAmp Character Series Bass Pedal delivers the sound of a tower of power pumping through a stack of 10″ speakers. The VT Bass is just the bass pedal for bass players who demand to be heard and want legendary bass tone. From chunky funk with the ubiquitous flip-top to the higher-gain growl of indie rock, this Tech 21 bass effects pedal has range to spare. Still need more? Lean on the Character control for the fat, distorted sound of Crimson and King s X—it all sounds massive. From clean SVT thump to dirty, earth-quaking crunch, with the VT Bass pedal you just dial it in.

Each effects pedal in the Tech 21 Character Series, including the VT Bass Pedal, is loaded with tonal DNA for a specific style of guitar amplifier. By simply twisting a few knobs, you can build those sought-after tones or hot-rod your own. From rare vintage classics to roaring modern icons, every variation is delivered in the distinctive voicing of that amp style. The intuitive amp-like controls on Tech 21 Character Series pedals let you get your hands dirty from the get-go while you explore decades of blistering tones.

Being a genuine SansAmp, each Tech 21 Character Series pedal is way more than a stompbox. Each pedal can be used as a stand-alone pre-amp to drive a power amp, a studio mixer, or a PA system, with the rich SansAmp cabinet emulation that sounds huge – even straight into a computer soundcard. Or plug the Tech 21 VT Bass SansAmp Character Series Bass Pedal into your bass guitar amp to take your tone on the road.

I also found a nice demo by Burgerman666:

I heard a few people talking about this, so I wanted to take a closer look. The Tech 21 Sans Amp takes some of the characteristics of the classic Orange amp and dropped that in a pedal. There is a ‘speaker emulation’ button which is meant to take some of the high end off of the tone.

Here is the official description:

Experience T-rextacy with the greasy grit of ’70s London glam, or take it deeper and darker into paranoid vintage metal grind. Dime the gain to experience the sludgelicious roar of contemporary stoner rock pumping through a Vintage 30-style 4×12 cab. From sweet cleans to crushing distortion, the Oxford is one juicy pedal.

The level and drive controls work like a traditional, well-equipped amp. Low, mid, and high are active, providing a wider array of tonal possibilities. The character knob is a continuously-variable control that moves seamlessly between different model voicings, covering vintage, high-gain and face-melting lead tones. The character and mid controls, and the speaker emulations, are all engineered to personify the specific amplifier traits and speakers associated with each amplifier type.

The SansAmp technology captures the warm, rich, natural tones of the most sought-after tube amplifiers. Within the parameters of each model’s particular design, the controls provide you with access to specific tone-shaping characteristics within the tube amplifier sound spectrum.

SansAmp products are designed to work seamlessly in both recording and stage environments. They can be used with almost any instrument, for any music style, and for multiple applications. Record directly to tape and disc or enhance previously recorded tracks. For live performances, they can drive a power amp and speakers, augment your existing amplifier set-up, or run directly into the mixer of a PA system.

I found this great video showing what this pedal does (including what it can do for bass) by bubu245

I also found another video from premeireguitar where they visited the Tech 21 booth at NAMM 2010. They go into more detail on this pedal along with their other pedals.
