Premiere Guitar has another great Rig Rundown that they posted yesterday. This is for Steely Dan’s Jon Herington. I liked this video a lot. Instead of talking with a tech, the interview was with Jon Herington. I particularly liked this video. I thought it provided some great insight on why he used certain guitars, amps and effects. I thought it was very informational. Jon is a great player and to hear him talk about gear, is a treat.

I liked how he uses the Boss TU-2 as the buffer for the pedals. I personally do this as well, and for those of you don’t know, the buffer will raise the input signal to the pedals. Especially if you use long instrument cables, this can help with cable capacitance. For more information on cable capacitance, check out this post: Visual Sound (buffered bypass) and Route 808. I also liked how he ran the delays and reverb through the amp’s effects loop. I’ve played around with this in the past, but for some reason always end up with those pedals in front, maybe I’ll re-address it again.

Hi,
I’ve been using a Boss GT-10 Digital Multi Effects pedal, but wanted to add into it’s effects loop some stand alone stompboxes, mostly analog. I have: MXR Carbon Copy, MXR Phase 90 Script Custom Shop, ISP Decimator, Tech 21 Liverpool for the Beatles/Brian May sounds, BBE Green Screamer as Tubescreamer OD clone, Digitech Jimi Hendrix  Pedal Modeler, Eventide SPACE for Modulated Reverb with the greatest presets for spacing out, and the control pedal for my Fender SuperSonic 22 FSR in Surf Green.

I am not a musician by profession, I’m a Clinical Psychologist trying to learn and take music seriously now for fun with myself, friends, and just starting to gig a song here and there with my guitar instructor.

Also pictured is my Rickenbacker 381V69 6 string, Fender American Deluxe Ash Stratocaster in Aged Cherry, Fender American Deluxe Ash Telecaster in Butterscotch, and the Supersonic 22 FSR in Surf Green.

UPDATE
Dr. David Mednick sent me a update to his pedal line since he originally sent it to me. A few changes to report, so I wanted to list these below!

I swapped out the Carbon Copy, which was great, for the TC Electronics Flashback, which is much more flexible and is fantastic.  I also swapped out the BBE Green Screamer and added a Rockbox Boiling Point for overdrive and distortion and a Way Huge Swollen Pickle for Fuzz and Distortion, they compliment each other well, Boiling Point is more Tube Screamer like with picking/strumming dynamics, and the Way Huge is much heavier.

This morning I came across the Tech 21 XXL Guitar Edition overdrive. It’s a great sounding OD if you want some super balls. I found a great demo by Burgerman666 of this same pedal, but with slightly different graphics. I know some of you will dig this video.

Seems like a few people know that I’m a fan of Foals. I’ve broken down Yannis Philippakis and Jimmy Smith‘s boards in the past. Recently, I’ve a had a few requests regarding the bass player, Walter Gervers, set up.  When I think of Foals, I think about the carefully interwoven guitar lines of Yannis and Jimmy. Also think of the passive-aggressive style vocals, but I also think of the very solid and groove locked rhythm section of Walter of bass and Jack Bevan on drums. Solid!

I had a very hard time finding photos of the pedals Walter uses though, but I was able to find one older shot, which I think should be semi-accurate today. If you have any info, please let me know. Walter’s set up is basic, but sounds great. He primarily uses three pedals on the floor, but I’ve read in several places that he uses a SansAmp (probably a ParaDriver) *.

Reading various interviews, I was surprised how Walter focused on his limitations and expressed his desire to increase his ability to help with the band. I now like him even more. Great to read/see humble musicians that are making music, but willing to admit they’re not awesome. I dig that.

I primarily play a 6-string short-scale bass. Currently using a Schecter Hellcat VI and a Burns Barracuda which are both more or less in the Fender Bass VI category. I like a vintage sound, so I focused on accumulating some vintage Boss effects. Here’s my path… Bass > Korg Pitchblack tuner > Boss PH-1r Phaser (Phasers ­ to me anyway – are more like Wah pedals than modulation as they cut or notch a frequency that is swept to electronically so I put it early in the chain) > Tech 21 VT Bass which I use primarily for OD and some distortion and tone shaping rather than pre-amping. If I was pre-amping with it I would probably put it at the end of the chain just before the looper.) > Analogman Standard Chorus which has an optional “Deep” toggle switch on it which makes it sound significantly better with a bass when it’s engaged. I also run it at 18v for more headroom. This is really the ultimate bass chorus. > Boss BF-2 Flanger (there is a bass version of this but I feel this non-bass version sounds better) > Boss DD-2 Delay which I had modded by Dan at This1smyne to have more a tape-like effect with the flick of a switch. Last on the chain is a Boss RC-2 Loop Station with a custom This1smyne duel footswitch. I have all of this mounted on a Pedaltrain Jr and powered with a TRex Fuel Tank Jr. I mounted the Fuel Tank Jr. invisibly under the board using 3M Dual-Lock. Perfect fit. I also have a rare and quite bizarre sounding Danelectro Sitar Swami which is not on the board right now. This board set-up also works just fine with my 1982 Guild D-35 acoustic which I had electrified with a K&K Sound Pure-Mini pick-up. The design of the K&K is fantastic. It does not at all degrade or impact the non-electrified acoustic sound or in any way alter the aesthetics of the guitar as it is totally invisible. The cord plug is built into the side strap button. Great tone and not at all intrusive. It is a perfect solution. Also, the “Deep Toggle” on the Analogman Chorus gives me the flexibility to adjust it with a flip of the toggle so it sounds great with the acoustic as well.

I’m not in a band. Instead, I concentrate on home-recording via a M-Audio Firewire Solo interface into a MacBook Pro i7 with GarageBand. I use a small Acoustic brand bass amp for amplification when practicing and for micing into the Firewire interface when I need it.

Fridays’ Pedal Line Friday mentioned a Tech 21 SansAmp 3-Channel Programmable Bass Driver DI. Programmable DI? This seems pretty interesting, so I had to look further. All the bass players I’ve played with (with the exception of one) dreaded the DI set up, which I can understand, but I’m wondering if something like this would make things a lot better.

Here is the official description:

The Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI is a 3-channel, programmable rig-in-a-box similar to the TRI-A.C. for guitar, but made for bassists. The all-analog circuitry features drive, bass, treble, presence, blend, and level controls. Yesterday on Facebook, I mentioned that I was planning on moving away from my Line 6 DL 4 delay into something else.  The Line 6 is great, sounds great, but I just want something simple and easy. I guess I’m not a ‘preset’ sorta guy, but a guy that likes knobbies. There were lots of great suggestions, but one that I wasn’t too familiar with, so I wanted to take a closer look.

Josh Washburn mentioned the Tech 21 Boost D.L.A. I’ve looked at few Tech 21 pedals, and they sound great, but I didn’t know they were making a delay, so a closer look was needed. I found a great video by Burgerman666 and he appears to be liking this pedal. A few things caught my eye initially. Tap tempo is something I do like on the DL 4, I also like the level control and tone.

So yesterday, I posted a post about the Tech 21 VT Bass SansAmp Character Series Bass pedal, and Randy W. mentioned that they sold the the deluxe. So I had to look into this. The deluxe is definitely ‘deluxe’ over the standard pedal with it being programmable with a FX loop.

Today, I wanted to talk about the Tech 21 SansAmp Character Series Oxford Distortion pedal. I heard a few people talking about this, so I wanted to take a closer look. The Tech 21 Sans Amp takes some of the characteristics of the classic Orange amp and dropped that in a pedal. There is a ‘speaker emulation’ button which is meant to take some of the high end off of the tone.
