This morning I’m realizing that last beer last night, was probably not a good idea… but oh well.  Today, I thought it would be cool to post this video by gearmanndude where he compares the three flavors of ProCo Rat pedals out there. On this shootout, he demos a ProCo Rat2 a ProCo Turbo Rat and a ProCo You Dirty Rat. All side by side you so you guys can hear the difference. Let me know what you think by commenting below!

Yesterday I posted about the Strymon blueSky Reverberator, and this morning I came across this interesting shimmer shootout, where tubescreamer (andrew stephen othling)  compared the Strymon blueSky, Empress Superdelay and Line 6 Verbzilla. This shootout was only comparing the “shimmer” effect where it almost sounds like there is a keyboard behind what you’re playing. Very atmospheric and something that could be used to create some pretty interesting sound-scapes.

I didn’t think this was a fair comparison with the Empress Superdelay. I mean the Empress is an amazing pedal, but I don’t think it was pulling off the shimmer like the Verbzilla or Strymon. I think a Eventide might have been good to fill that slot. Overall, I still think the Strymon came out on top between the three. What do you think? Let me know by posting a comment below.

Last week I posted about the T-Rex Luxury Drive. I’m not sure about the history of how it came from TC Jauernig to T-Rex (if you know, please comment or email me). A few of you asked if there were any differences, and some who were familiar with both had opinions (either T-Rex was better or the TC Jauernig was).

Yesterday I posted the “Andy and his 16 fuzz pedals video“. This was a great video where Any plays a single riff on guitar with 16 different fuzz pedals. You should definitely check it out. But what about the bass players?? Here ya go, Andy did the same demo but with bass. This is a great way to how these various fuzzes alter your tone. I’m sure there is a tone or two that will work for you.

Andy from StompBoxSonic.com (which is a great site by the way – you should definitely check it out!) took on the daunting task of quickly comparing a bunch of fuzz pedals. He doesn’t do any adjusting, just plays a simple riff through each of the pedals to give you an idea of what they’re all about. He also used the same guitar, mics and amp throughout the process, to eliminate some variables. It’s pretty cool hearing the different characteristics. Some are bright, some are dark, some are nasely, etc. There is quite an assortment of fuzzes in there. From common fuzz to some pretty obscure boxes. Fun stuff.

I came across this fantastic video by Tippon (Taylor Barefoot and David Fisher) where they shot a overdrive shootout where Taylor plays 35 overdrives. I think to take something like this on is extremely difficult to say the least, but I appreciate how they went about it. Same guitar (Linhof Tele), same amp (Two-Rock Amplifier), same mics.. and same riffs. I also like the fact that he played a simple riff, a more complex chord riff and a lead line. All the pedals started with settings at 12o’clock and were adjusted to compliment the effect.

Each clip is short (approximately 30-40 seconds) but you get to understand the base tone each pedal has. Granted, that we’re missing out on the specific characteristics and general application, but to include that, would take days of shooting. I think this video is a great reference point if you’re starting your search for a new overdrive pedal. The video is long (35 minutes), but well worth the length. If you want to get right to a particular pedal, I created a list below with their times to make it a little easier to compare overdrives.

Also, one really cool thing about the video, they got in touch with Bill Finnegan (creator of the Klon Centaur) and he let them include a Klon Overdrive that is still in production and planned for release in the not-so-distant future.

A few months ago, I wrote a community question asking what the best delay pedal is out there today. I’ve personally been really interested in the Big Muff Pi with Tone Wicker, and of course my favorite reviewer on YouTube, gearmandude, had a sweet shoot out between the Big Muff Pi w/Tone Wicker, Little Big Muff and NYC Big Muff Pi. After announcing the first Effects Bay pedal give-away, where I’m working with Fat Tone Guitars to give away a prototype F-Bomb Fuzz pedal, I thought it would be cool to shift gears and talk about phasers.
