Hope all the dads out there had a great Father’s Day! Yesterday I was super surprised when I opened my last gift by the family for me on Father’s Day. My kids with their anticipating eyes, and with my wife starring at me with something a little different in her look got me quite curious. The look she had was the classic “I have something awesome that I know you’re going to love” type of look. After removing the wrapping paper and noticed the Strymon on the box, I was blown away. Could she have really gotten me the Strymon BlueSky Reverberator?? I was talking about this pedal in passing a while back, and luckily she actually made note of it. I guess it’s handy that her husband has a blog where he talks about guitar gear he wants often. So this Father’s Day was quite special. A nice piece of gear to play with and see if it’ll help me create something… outside of my song writing box. What a day.

I haven’t been this excited about a pedal in a while. Last week I asked about a new pedal on the Yannis’ board from Foals. It replaced his Electro-Harmonix Nano Holy Grail, and I was surprised by the functionality available for this new reverb pedal. A few people commented and mentioned it was a Strymon blueSky Reverberator. I’ve seen a few Strymon pedals mentioned before, but I knew very little about the Blue Sky Reverberator, so I thought I’d hit YouTube to see what I could find. And.. I was pretty much blown away.

I wanted to talk about this new pedal by TC Electronics called the Hall of Fame Reverb. I saw a few mentions of this on Twitter, so thought I’d take a closer look – especially since I’ve been messing around with reverbs lately. This is a review of the T-Rex Room-Mate tube driven reverb. This is a absolutely fantastic sounding reverb, something you would expect coming from T-Rex Engineering. The Room-Mate uses a 12AX7 tube at the heart and has 4 pre-set ‘modes’. These reverb modes are spring, room, hall and LFO.

Spring will give you that classic spring reverb from short and spanky to a long spring with plenty of decay
Room is a open reverb that will give you a nice amount of reverb
Hall will give you plenty of reverb for the concert hall sound
LFO is reverb with chorus in there

There are 6 pot controls – Mode, Level, Mix, Decay, HiCut and Gain.

Mode is what I mentioned above
Level controls the overall signal level leaving the pedal
Mix controls the blend of reverb
Decay controls how long the reverb lingers or decays
HiCut allows you to shave off some hi-end off the reverb to darken the reverb
Gain controls the input signal to the pedal

For this demo, I again enlisted the help of my good friend Jimmy Rolle. Jimmy is using a Amercian Fender Strat through a Matchless DC-30. For these recordings we used a Shure SM57, Fathead SPII Ribbon Mic and a Shure SM81. SM57 and Fathead used a ART Pro MPAII PreAmp, all three channels were mixed and fed to M-Audio Firewire 1814 interface. We recorded 3 different clips. The first clip is the T-Rex Room-Mate played clean:

Overall, this pedal sounds really good. The first item that struck me was how the reverb leaves your signal very clean. You only hear the reverb “behind” the note. Controls are easy to understand, and there are many quality reverb tones that can be had with this pedal. If you’re looking for a quality reverb, this might be the one. Saw this post at the EHX Blog today, thought it was really cool.  At the blog they posted the following YouTube videos where one is a Enigma Q Balls on a full kit and the other is a Holy Grail Reverb just on the snare. Alright, there isn’t much to talk about for this pedal, because, lets face it, we know what reverb pedals do. However, there are a few things worth noting.

First off is what you can see. There are four settings: Spring, Hall, Room, and Flerb. Now, it stumps me, because it would make sense for the hall setting to be after room, because that is the order for how much reverb you can get, from smallest to largest, but whatever, no big deal. There are two knobs (from left to right), blend and amount.

The blend knob changes how your raw sound blends in with the reverb. The more blend you add, the more your sound gets put into the reverb sound. So, for instance, if you put it all the way to the right, it sounds like you’re listening to your guitar from the back of the hall (at least, in the hall setting). Turn back the knob, and you find yourself listening to the perfect blend of guitar tone and reverb. The amount is how much reverb is being put on your sound. Now, the first three settings for the reverb are what you would expect. However, the flerb setting is very different. It is still a reverb, however, it adds a flange to it, and makes it very space like, and I could see being useful for ambient sounds.

You’re probably wondering how the sound is on the reverb. Well, it’s a very warm, lush reverb, and if you close your eyes, you will feel like you are in a hall with the hall setting, and the room and spring settings are nothing to shake a stick at. They will also blow your mind as well. It doesn’t sound processed at all, in my opinion, and is some of the best reverb I’ve heard (at least, a reverb that comes in pedal form).

Overall, I’d recommend this pedal to anyone that’s looking for a reverb pedal to expand their sound. Like I said at the beginning, there’s not much to talk about, but what there is, it’s worth noting.

The last few weeks I’ve been playing around with reverb. Never thought I ever would be.. but I am.. and I’m liking it.. a lot. I’ve been exploring some ambient guitar playing, and satisfying my guilty pleasures of ‘verb and delay tones.

Today I happened to catch this absolutely awesome demo / review of the Electro-Harmonix Cathedral stereo reverb pedal by Dave Weiner. This is a extremely thorough demo, where Dave goes into all the modes and controls, and I have to say this reverb pedal sounds incredibly good, and has some major options available. The ‘infinite’ option and the ‘freeze’ capabilities are cool.. and could be extremely fun. I also liked the ability to adjust the tone on the reverb.. to make the reverb portion darker or brighter.

At Musician’s Friend, I came across the Electro-Harmonix Classics Holier Grail Reverb. This is a clearance item, since this is no longer in production. So this pedal and deal won’t last long. I have to admit I’m a sucker for the ‘classic’ look of Electro-Harmonix. They’re big.. but cool.

The Holier Grail is the ‘big brother’ of the popular Holy Grail pedal with some interesting functions/features.

Currently on Musician’s Friend it’s on sale for $99.99. This pedal normally sells for $193.50, so this is quite a drop in price.. and definitely a bargain.
