Community Question: “What amp(s) do you play through?”

I figured I haven’t asked a ‘community question’ in a while, so yesterday I asked the following question to Twitter and Facebook – “What amp(s) do you play through?“. I like asking these questions to see what people are using out there. Here were the responses:

Facebook

Jahn Xavier It’s all about portability for me. I use a Fender Blues Jr & a Blues Deluxe, depending on the desired tone or size of the venue – both have been heavily modded/rebuilt by Ben Fargen at Fargen Amplification. Also replaced the first 12AX7 in the Jr with a 12AY7, which got rid of that “boxy” sound they can have (as well as that notorious Fender ‘volume jump’”. ALso have Celestion G12H30 speakers in both.
John Elliott I have a Roost Session Master which is like a Marshall copy also with two 12 inch Celestion speakers. Mmmm changing the valves – I have 12AX7s- I might give that a try
Marcelo Donati I use a Behringer V-ampire, but I really want a Fender Stage 112 SE!
Tom Spencer Matchless Lightning 15 Reverb. Yes.
Russ Benoit Just traded in my Crate V50 today for a Fender Frontman 25r. I was sad to see the tubage go, but with 2 small kids I *never* got to play the amp at a decent volume, so away it went.
David Brown Fryette SigX and a TruTone 2×12 loaded with Celestion Blues.
Mike Jackson 1st gen fender cyber-twin. You reminded me to look for a repair place (rotory knobs went iffy) and found one down the street from the office! Nice!
Bill Thompson Two Fender 59 Bassman Reissues,… (((STEREO)))! ;)
Dave Jones Fender 1994 tweed Blues Deluxe and a more recent tweed Blues Junior with Jensen speaker. About to drop a Weber 12F150 into the BDx :) V1 replaced with a 12AY7 in the BJr and a 5751 in the BDx. Otherwise running Tungsol 12AX7 and 6L6/5881 and JJ EL84 respectively for the amps. Yeah I’m into tubes right now :) Oh & a volume box in the FX loop to tame that crazy volume on the Blues Deluxe ;)
Frank Levine Fender Blues Deluxe RI. My practice amp is a Kustom Tube 12.
Lionel Oberto JVM 205H
Justin Vigeant Peavey Classic 50 410 & Fender Blues Jr… looking to upgrade to a Dr Z Maz 18 possibly in the upcoming year.
Garrett Haynes Deluxe Reverb Reissue
Anne-Marie Perry Roland Jazz Chorus 120
Ronald Neely II Markbass Little Mark II LE
Kevin Kelsey Peavey Classic 50 410 and a Fender Blues Jr.
T.J. Harris Randall RM50 with Top Boost module (adding a Plexi module soon)
Ron Hostetter Old Fender Stage combo. Love it.
Bryan Aspey Tech 21 Trademark 60
Andrew Johnson Selmer treble n bass sv50 head into old 4×12 cab…

Question? Leverage the Effects Bay community for an answer!

question-markI have to say, I absolutely love this blog. It’s been a blast and the response has been incredible. So I first want to thank community that supports Effects Bay. Thank you so much.

I often get questions about pedals, either by Twitter or email. Questions usually are about types of pedals (ie: “I’m looking for a good delay, any suggestions?”). I answer these questions based on my own personal experiences. But unfortunately, I’m not in a position to have been able to play every pedal out there today, so my experiences is limited to what I know (and what I hear in review videos or conversations with other musicians). Recently, agraa from Twitter had a specific question about the T-Rex Replica delay. I’ve been personally looking at this delay for myself, but I couldn’t answer his simple question of “Do you think the T-Rex Replica is worth the price?“.

So, this is what I’m thinking? I’m wondering if we can ‘leverage’ the great Effects Bay community with some of these specific questions. After agraa asked, me I immediately tweeted if anyone used this pedal and asked them what they thought and then passed that information back. Twitter is not the best platform for this, but the Effects Bay blog is. If you have a specific question about a certain brand/model pedal, I will post a blog post with your question (If I can’t answer it), and then tweet the post. If anyone can answer it would be great if you could come back to the blog and leave a comment. I think personal experiences with a pedal are incredibly important. You know what it can do and can’t do. You use the pedal in real-world applications. If you have a question, email me from the site or send me a tweet!

I know some of you are asking why I don’t use a forum for this. Personally, I can see adding a forum down the road, but I want to avoid it for now. Administering a forum is a whole other ball of wax, that I kinda don’t want to deal with at this point of the site. I like the direct (occasional) question for now with follow ups. If this turns into a big thing, then the natural direction would be to add a forum.

Let me know what you think people!

Burning Building Guitar

So on November 10th (sorry about the lag there), I asked the following question on Twitter and on the Facebook page – “Ok. Question time. Seems like a lot of a peeps have a few guitars in their line up. What’s your #1 guitar? The guitar you’d run into a burning building to save.” I remember Twitter seemed a bit slow, so thought I’d get some community interaction going.

Below are the responses:

via Twitter

JohnnydelFuego @effectsbay 71 Telecaster with Rosewood fretboard.
rrevenge @effectsbay so far my Shecter Avenger Jagermeister edition. my frankenstein is gonna be better tho. i got my Gotoh floyd in the mail!
HomesickFrank @effectsbay 1995 American Standard Strat with colored headstock. Custom Shop design – limited production.
RandallMBrown @effectsbay My “burning-building guitar”: The black Fender Flame: http://www.masterseriesguit….
Merrw @effectsbay Mine is an Eastwood GP – goldtop
lloydtones @effectsbay Mine’s a 1st year Ibanez Jetking II. I love that guitar like I love little else. Too bad Ibanez messed up the later models.
collateraldmge @effectsbay Gibson Les Paul Custom Slash Edition
Petroguy @effectsbay McCarty Soapbar is getting saved. Then I would go back for the wife.
drewstreetmary @effectsbay 52 RI Telecaster for me!

via Facebook

Trey Bliss Although I’m usually playing my Les Paul, I have a 1955 Gretsch Duo Jet I don’t like to take out to gigs. Amazing guitar thats great for the studio. I would run in to save it.
Justin Vigeant What a cruel question… hmmm, I would say the Tele just barely edges out the SG, but both are pretty light, so hopefully I could get both in time!
Owen Vickers That’s a really hard question, but if I had to choose one, it would be my bitsa guitar put together from a Realtone Strat shaped body, Ibanez RG140 neck and Rio Grande pickups. And then my Malmsteen Strat, if I was fast enough ;)
Patricio Morales Tought question… for personal reasons, my most beloved guitar is a ’93 AM. ST. Strat that my late dad bought me. It stands next to my bed and I no longer tour with it. In fact, when I die I wish to be cremated with it (unless my daughter wants it really bad).
Of the guitars I do gig with (and which are at my rehearsal space) I wouldn’t hesitate … Read Morein saving my Duesenberg Starplayer TV… although it would break my heart to see my Jap. Jazzmaster with K. Novak pups burn to a crisp. Can I save both?
Kevin Kelsey My Jazzmaster…but my Toronado is a very close second.
