<p>I had a chance to check out <a href="http://amzn.to/ieqFFE" target="_self"><strong>Kylesa</strong></a> about a year ago. I actually went to the show to see Red Fang, who I&#8217;m very partial to, but Kylesa was the headliner&#8230; and they were great. Those that know me, know I&#8217;m into aluminum necks, and I was psyched to see Laura Pleasants playing a EGC (<a href="http://www.electricalguitarcompany.com/" target="_blank">Electrical Guitar Company</a>) guitar on stage.</p>
<p>I thought it would be cool to break down her pedalboard this morning. Doing some quick looking I saw a <a href="http://www.tonefactor.com/blog/2010/04/05/gear-talk-with-kylesas-laura-pleasants/" target="_blank">ToneFactor blog post</a> with a great interview.</p>
<p>There, they did break down the board, but thought it was interesting it didn&#8217;t quite match up with the photo there. First, here is the photo:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.effectsbay.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/kylesas-laura-pleasnts-pedalboard-1.jpg" rel="lightbox[3406]"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3407" title="Kylesa's Laura Pleasants Pedalboard" src="http://www.effectsbay.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/kylesas-laura-pleasnts-pedalboard-1.jpg" alt="Kylesa's Laura Pleasants Pedalboard" width="425" height="319" /></a></p>
<blockquote><p>TF: Please tell us a little bit about your live rig.<br />
LP: Hmmm. it seems to be changing all the time!!! For our upcoming European tour, I will be playing my Les Paul Gold Top through an Orange Thunderverb and Rockerverb head. I am taking the following pedals: <a href="http://amzn.to/fu0oHY" target="_blank"><strong>Tech 21 Boost DLA Delay</strong></a>, <a href="http://amzn.to/g0Sxqe" target="_blank"><strong>Line 6 DL4</strong></a>, Retro Vibe Chorus, Boss Flanger (an older one), <a href="http://amzn.to/8DCn4Q" target="_blank"><strong>MXR Phase 90</strong></a>, <a href="http://amzn.to/dRdFkR" target="_blank"><strong>Fulltone OCD</strong></a>, Musket Fuzz, Buddha Wah, Volume pedal, Boss Tuner.</p></blockquote>
<p>I don&#8217;t see the Tech 21 Boost DLA, and teh wah appears to be a <a href="http://amzn.to/e5VWhx" target="_blank"><strong>Teese Picture Wah</strong></a>.. also no <a href="http://www.fattoneguitars.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=bla01&amp;Click=315" target="_blank"><strong>Blackout Effectors Musket Fuzz</strong></a>. I also think that is a <strong><a href="http://www.pedalnerd.com/index.php/Criteria/Retro-Sonic+Chorus/track/cloud/fuseaction/store.searchResults.htm" target="_blank">Retro-Sonic Chorus</a> </strong>vs. Retro Vibe.. could be wrong. She mentions older Boss Flanger, which I&#8217;ll assume is the<strong> <a href="http://www.pedalnerd.com/index.php/Criteria/bf-2/track/cloud/fuseaction/store.searchResults.htm" target="_blank">Boss BF-2</a></strong>.</p>
<p>I went over to their <a href="http://www.myspace.com/kylesa" target="_blank">myspace page</a> to see if I could get a few more shots, and I did..</p>
<p>Here is a shot that looks like a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0016ZZKJO?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=effectsbay-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B0016ZZKJO" target="_blank"><strong>MXR Carbon Copy Delay</strong></a> where the Line 6 normally is. I&#8217;m not sure what wah is <strong> </strong> here (might be a <a href="http://amzn.to/hehqJm" target="_blank"><strong>MXR MC404 CAE Crybaby Dual Inductor Wah</strong></a>), and possibly a Boss Chorus of some type. I&#8217;m assuming that is the MXR Phase 90, but could be <a href="http://amzn.to/gORmwM" target="_blank">MXR Micro Amp</a> by the color (stage lighting might be making the orange look that way).</p>
<p><a href="http://www.effectsbay.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/kylesas-laura-pleasnts-pedalboard-2.jpg" rel="lightbox[3406]"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3408" title="Kylesa's Laura Pleasants Pedalboard 2" src="http://www.effectsbay.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/kylesas-laura-pleasnts-pedalboard-2.jpg" alt="Kylesa's Laura Pleasants Pedalboard 2" width="213" height="320" /></a></p>
<p>Here is a great shot of her working the Budda.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.effectsbay.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/kylesas-laura-pleasnts-pedalboard-3.jpg" rel="lightbox[3406]"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3409" title="Kylesa's Laura Pleasants Pedalboard 3" src="http://www.effectsbay.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/kylesas-laura-pleasnts-pedalboard-3.jpg" alt="Kylesa's Laura Pleasants Pedalboard 3" width="214" height="315" /></a></p>
<p>Looks like everything (exception of the <a href="http://www.pedalnerd.com/index.php/Criteria/tu-2/track/cloud/fuseaction/store.searchResults.htm" target="_blank"><strong>Boss TU-2</strong></a> and <a href="http://amzn.to/fJXyY5" target="_blank"><strong>Ernie Ball Volume Pedal</strong></a>) are on a <a href="http://amzn.to/hSdUnG" target="_blank"><strong>Pedaltrain PT-2 pedal board</strong></a> and powered by <a href="http://amzn.to/c3ico4" target="_blank"><strong>VoodooLab Pedal Power 2+</strong></a>.</p>
<p>Everyone knows that board is ever-evolving, changing. Due to improvements. Due to repairs. Due to experimentation.</p>

<p>Today I stumbled onto a great video on <a href="http://www.jimdunlop.com/index.php?page=dunloptv" target="_blank">DunlopTV</a>. It&#8217;s an interview with Trace Foster, the guitar tech of <a href="http://www.joeperry.com/" target="_blank">Joe Perry</a>. There are some great gear shots and discussions from backline to pedals to guitars.</p>
<div style="text-align: center;"><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="425" height="344" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/lz20XxjSbnc?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/lz20XxjSbnc?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></div>
<p>Here is a shot of his pedal board (screen capture) of the video:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.effectsbay.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/joe-perry-pedalboard-08-14.jpg" rel="lightbox[2525]"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-2526" title="Joe Perry Pedalboard 08/14/2010" src="http://www.effectsbay.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/joe-perry-pedalboard-08-14.jpg" alt="Joe Perry Pedalboard 08/14/2010" width="443" height="249" /></a></p>
<p>I was able to break down the board, but Trace skipped a few pedals including a couple I could not identify. The unidentified pedals are the narrow pedal between the Class A Boost and Klon, the pedal left of the Klon and the blue pedal above the G-Lab delay. *Update* Looks like we have them locked down. Thanks everyone!</p>

<p>While I was eavesdropping on the Twitter conversation between <a href="http://twitter.com/CheeseBlocks" target="_blank">@CheeseBlocks</a> and <a href="http://twitter.com/PeterBerki" target="_blank">@PeterBerki</a>, I read the following &#8220;.. the cool cat overdrive is 95% the same circuit as the OCD..&#8221; What??? I had to explore further. <a href="http://www.google.com/#hl=en&amp;source=hp&amp;q=%22danelectro+cool+cat%22+ocd&amp;aq=f&amp;aqi=g10&amp;aql=&amp;oq=&amp;fp=173c88006b48283c" target="_blank">Googling</a>, I did see a few sites discussing this and how both the OCD and Cool Cat were clones of VoodooLab or Timmy OD. Very interesting indeed. One thing to way in is the quality of build construction of a Dano pedal will be less, but I was surprised how close they sounded.</p>
<p>I found a great <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/gearmanndude" target="_blank">GearMannDude</a> video (does this guy ever let me down?) where he plays a Danelectro Cool Cat against a Version 4 Fulltone OCD.</p>
<div style="text-align: center;"><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="425" height="344" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/VXxIp9CYnp8&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;color1=0x3a3a3a&amp;color2=0x999999" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/VXxIp9CYnp8&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;color1=0x3a3a3a&amp;color2=0x999999" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></div>
<p>What I say in that video, the tone is very similar. There is some subtle differences in the low end in my opinion and there is definitely more options with the OCD, but the pedal sounds pretty damn close. The difference  really comes to price, but more importantly (in my opinion) build quality. I definitely want a stomp pedal that&#8217;s not going to break during live applications.</p>

<p>Since I&#8217;ve been talking and looking for different overdrives and potential distortion pedals for myself, I came across a fantastic comparison video by <strong><a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/ProGuitarShopDemos" target="_blank">ProGruitarShopDemos</a></strong> featuring the <strong>Fulltone OCD</strong>, <strong>MI Audio Crunch Box</strong> and <strong>Barber Direct Drive</strong>. In the past, I talked about the <a href="http://www.effectsbay.com/2009/10/fulltone-ocd-versions-1-2-3-and-4-shoot-out/" target="_self">Fulltone OCD</a> and the <a href="http://www.effectsbay.com/2009/10/mi-audio-crunch-box-v-3-distortion-guitar-effects-pedal/" target="_self">MI Audio Crunch Box</a>, so it was nice to see in the mix with the Barber Direct Drive. I wasn&#8217;t too familiar with this pedal, so I had to check this out. It&#8217;s clear they they all have some different nuances that each lacked, or gained. Overall, the Barber Direct was &#8216;darker&#8217;, but to me sounded the most natural. The OCD, which I think is a great pedal, had some nice sparkle. I also like the MI Audio Crunch Box, I think you could get that pedal really growling with the amount of gain it can pump out. I didn&#8217;t think there were any winners or losers in this comparison, but it&#8217;s great to hear the differences between them.</p>

<p>On this lazy Sunday afternoon, I was looking at the <strong>Fulltone OCD</strong> (Obsessive Compulsive Drive) pedal. I&#8217;ve heard so many good things about this overdrive pedal over the last few year. I remember looking at this pedal before picking my Audio Crowther Hotcake and it was a hard decision between the two.</p>
<p>Today, however, I came across another set of awesome videos by <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/gearmanndude" target="_blank">gearmandude </a>where he does a shoot-out between the 4 versions of the OCD. I actually didn&#8217;t know there were versions until today, so it really got my attention. I was quite surprised with the different tones/volume each one had.</p>
<p>This video he is using a Les Paul</p>
<div style="text-align: center"><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="425" height="344" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/QnPzxj5MJR8&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;rel=0" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/QnPzxj5MJR8&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;rel=0" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></div>
<p>This video he is using a Stratocater</p>
<div style="text-align: center"><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="425" height="344" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/KB-zDdkkgJ4&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;rel=0" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/KB-zDdkkgJ4&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;rel=0" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></div>
<p>Here is a older video where he compares versions 2, 3 and 4 using a Telecaster (sound quality is not as good as the previous videos)</p>
<div style="text-align: center"><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="425" height="344" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/8xht70sagx8&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;rel=0" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/8xht70sagx8&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;rel=0" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></div>
<p>As you can see, each pedal has a different voicing and character.  Now, if you like a particular version, you can find <a href="http://www.pedalnerd.com/index.php/Criteria/ocd/track/cloud/fuseaction/store.searchResults.htm" target="_blank">Fulltone OCD at PedalNerd.com</a> which finds pedals at eBay.</p>
