Today I wanted to talk about the Electro-Harmonix XO Stereo Polychorus. This is the classic ‘Nirvana’ effect used in “Come as you are”. The polychorus, as the name implies, is not just a chorus effect. It is an analog chorus effect, with flanger and slapback echo functionality and allowing you to combine all for some cool sounds and textures. Electro-Harmonix recently put this in their XO enclosure and changed some of controls. The original had ‘width’ and ‘plate’ and this version now has ‘sweep filter’ and ‘sweep rate’. The other controls are still there – ‘tune/delay’, ‘feedback’ and ‘mode’.

I found this great video by EHX demoing some of the tones that you can get with the Stereo Polychorus, including the Nivana-esque tone as well as a very close King Crimson tone. Very cool.

I found this interesting video yesterday. It’s the Electro-Harmonix Ring Thing Modulator demo by Joshua Craig. I thought it was interesting, since his style is on the heavier side of things, and you normally don’t see Ring Thing demos showcasing this.  I think some of you guys might appreciate it at the very least.

First, here is the official description on the Electro-Harmonix Ring Thing:

The ring modulator section builds upon the original EHX Frequency Analyzer, adding to it selectable carrier waveforms, sweepable filter, presets, and expression pedal control. Single-sideband modulation is a new effect based on ring modulation but with only one band present, making it a more harmonious effect. Finally, EHX added a powerful modulatable pitch shifter to this guitar pedal that can do detune effects, vibrato, chorus, transpose, or even whammy when you use an external expression pedal.

Here is the video posted by EHX. I got a kick out of the “rock face” at 0:41 of the video. Makes me want to run a new segment on the site where people can send me their “rock face” moments! What do you think?

Today, I wanted to talk about the Worm by Electro Harmonix. I stumbled across a older video demo by Peter Stroud, but I wasn’t too familiar with this pedal at all.  The worm looks and sounds pretty cool. It’s a ‘all analog’ effects processor with phase, trem, vibrato and modulated wah. Pretty interesting.
