Kenny Wayne Shepherd – Pedal Board

Kenny Wayne Shepherd - Pedal BoardToday on Facebook, I saw a Lava Cable post where they posted a photo of Kenny Wayne Shepherd’s pedal board. That was interesting enough, but what really caught my eye was that the pedals were on a Helweg Custom Pedalboard. I’ve interviewed Michael Helweg in the past, and I really like the look of his boards. You can read that interview here – “Introducing Helweg Pedalboards“. It’s great to see that Helweg is getting some big names with his boards. There is no doubt the look of the boards are pretty great.

I haven’t listened to any Kenny Wayne Shepherd stuff.. probably since the late 90s, but I do remember he had pretty stellar tone. I thought I’d take this opportunity to break down his latest board. Lots of good stuff to be found on there for sure.

Brent Hinds of Mastodon Pedal Board Breakdown

Brent Hinds of Mastodon with his Electrical Guitar Company (EGC) Flying VMastodon is a great band if you’re into the heavy. They do it right and have been doing it right for a while. They just came out with their latest release – The Hunter and it’s pretty awesome. Mastodon is a 4 piece from Atlanta, GA and I wanted to focus on the guitarist/vox Brent Hinds for this post. I’ve also been digging Brent Hinds since he’s been getting into some aluminum guitars and you can see him play a plexi (similar to Dan Armstrong) Flying V with aluminum neck. The guitar is a EGC (Electrical Guitar Company). I personally own a couple of EGCs and they’re pretty damn great.

So this pedal breakdown video comes from PremierGuitar where they go into Brent’s rig as well as Bill Kelliher’s rig:

Here is the breakdown of the pedals on Brent’s board:

John Mayer Pedal Line Breakdown

John Mayer is another guitar player that I’m not a big fan of, but I definitely respect his guitar tone and quality of play. This guy can really lay down some awesome guitar. I remember catching a few live performances on TV that really impressed me, so when I came across this Premier Guitar Rig Rundown I wanted to share this. It’s a little old (9/8/10), but I would assume some of the pedals are still in the line up.. if not all of them.

This video really shows what’s all involved with his guitar tone. Premier Guitar’s Rebecca Dirks interviews Rene Martinez (guitar tech for Stevie Ray Vaughn, Prince, Mick Jones). Video submitted by PremierGuitar

As you notice, Rene doesn’t go into detail about the pedals except for the fact that they’re using a Bradshaw switching system.. and that they’re on in the trays. I wish he would have talk about a few of them – ie: the Roger Linn pedals, etc. I was able to get good screen snaps off all the pedals and was able to identify all of them. Here is the breakdown of pedals below.

Pedal Line Friday – 9/9 – Cody Ray

Today’s pedal line is from Cody Ray. If you have a pedal line (doesn’t have to be in a board) for your rig, please email me a photo, bio, description of pedals and routing to pedallineateffectsbaydotcom. Every Friday I’ll showcase a pedal line submission. Make sure you include any links to your band or music page.

Pedal Line Friday - 9/9 - Cody RayI am a lover good clean tone. Not too muddy and not too flat; all of my pedals insure that I get said tone. I’ll run from my guitar to my amp and all of my pedals.

It all starts with a Fender American Telecaster- pretty much completely standard. Into the Ernie Ball VP Jr. then the TC Electronic’s Polytune: I love this tuner because of the polytuning function, where I can tune all six of my strings at once. Also it is true-bypass which is always nice. That goes into the TC Electronic Nova dynamics compressor (which I bought after you featured it on the random effect twitter): This pedal is a huge asset to my tone it’s early in the chain to insure my tone is really clean through the rest of the pedals. I use the three band EQ compression for cleaner tones and the less stomp compression for more overdriven tones. Next the signal goes through the Crowther Audio Hot Cake: This is my fat, dirty tone. I use this for lead tones and really chunky parts. It is actually an extremely versatile pedal but I normally run it as shown in the picture (drive at 2 o’clock and level a little past 12). Next is the Ibanez TS-9 tube screamer Keeley Modded: This is my favorite overdrive, I use it mainly for a clean boost which is pretty much always on. It is such a pretty drive bright but really clean. Now pictured next is the DD-7 but actually It is the MXR Carbon copy: This pedal pretty much has one function for me, I use it for those soulful slapback echoes. Love the warmth of this pedal’s delay sound. next is the Boss DD-7: I couldn’t be more happy with this pedal’s digital delay. I use it mainly for dotted eighth note delays and I use that a lot. I use a custom made tap tempo that I adore. Finally we have the Electro Harmonix Deluxe memory boy: this is my main analog delay. I use this for quarter not delays that i like to have trail long. This is a very organic sounding pedal and I like to match it with the dotted eighth delays from the DD-7 for a really crazy sound. :) Out of all that I run through a Vox ac 15 with a celestion Vintage 30 speaker. I use a pedaltrain PT-2 and I power everything with a voodoo lab pedal power 2 plus (the iso 5 is pictured but I have upgraded)

I play for churches and I also have an Ambient Metal band called Parallels.

Omar Rodriguez-Lopez – The Mars Volta – Pedal Board

Yesterday, I featured Juan Alderete’s pedal board of The Mars Volta, so today I needed to follow up with Omar Rodriguez-Lopez. I have to admit, I didn’t know much about The Mars Volta, but after doing some research and listening/watching stuff, it really appears that he’s stripped down his rig from years past. Premiere Guitar got with The Mars Volta while they were touring with Sound Garden to discuss the rig.

Omar Rodriguez-Lopez - The Mars Volta - Pedal Board Below is the break down of all the pedals shown on the board. I’m sure the Line 6 M9 helped him get things more compact.

The most important pedal in my line, by far, is my 10 Band EQ. I play strats and hollow bodies and this guy can change the sound to make them sound like anything (as far as live performances go). Every serious guitar player should have a 10 Band EQ. I typically don’t play with this big of a board, only when I play long sets and need a variety in tone. Other wise I just play with a Tuner, Tube Screamer, DD-7, and 10 Band.

Pedal Line Friday – 6/10 – John Russchen

Today’s pedal line is from  John Russchen (@Gottlieb_John). If you have a pedal line (doesn’t have to be in a board) for your rig, please email me a photo, bio, description of pedals and routing to pedallineateffectsbaydotcom. Every Friday I’ll showcase a pedal line submission. Make sure you include any links to your band or music page.

Pedal Line Friday - 6/10 - John RusschenHi! I’m John Russchen. I play guitar in a Dutch thrash metalcore band, GOTTLIEB. We are currently unsigned and are just starting to build up our name in the Netherlands.
I’m a tone searcher / gear head, which means this is my current setup (April 2011) and most likely not my final setup (if that even exists).

I mostly play a Dean Razorback V255 with an EMG 81/60x combo and a 1982 Hamer USA Blitz (Explorer model) with the chrome EMG 81/60 pickups.

This is my pedal line:
Line6 Relay G30 Wireless System > Planet Waves Tuner > Dunlop Eddie van Halen Signature Wah > Carl Martin Combinator I [ DOD Tube FX53 > Ibanez TS9 Reissue > BOSS NS-2 Noise Suppressor > Blackstar HT-Drive > BOSS CE-5 Chorus Ensemble > MXR Carbon Copy Delay ] > DOD Stereo Turbo Chorus FX67 > MXR Phase 90 (Block)

I will attempt to explain why and how I use my pedals in chronological order.

Line6 Relay G30 Wireless System
Even though this technically is not a pedal, I have it on my board and think it’s worth mentioning. I have had this thing for more than a year and never had any problems. No tone sucking, no interference, no hissing or humming. The battery in the belt pack lasts forever and it’s almost funny they offer the possibility for some modulated tone suckage so your tone sounds like it’s running through a 6 meter cable (I’m European, so I just know the metric system).

Planet Waves Tuner
I could try and tell something cool about this pedal, but it is a tuner. It’s true bypass, has a big display, is accurate and it works well with down tuned guitars …

Dunlop Eddie van Halen Signature Wah
I’ve had an original Crybaby since forever, but wanted a true bypass solution to prevent my tone getting messed up in the beginning of my pedal line. When I started trying out different Wah-pedals, I realized the enormous difference in sound, warmth, depth, sweep, etc. The EVH signature is true bypass, has a nicely rounded sound to it, has a good focus on the mids and sounds really creamy. It’s actually quite subtle. The switch is very light opposite to most other Crybabies. Another plus are the two blinding blue LED’s. That won’t let you forget your wah is still on.

Pedal Line Friday - 6/10 - John Russchen
Carl Martin Combinator I

This is a programmable loop switcher. It offers 8 send and returns. There are even 2 stereo in- and outputs at the end of the line for your time based stereo effects. It works really simple. Insert 8 pedals in the right order (because you can’t program the pedal order). Tap the channel you want to program, select the pedals that should be in this channel by pushing the corresponding on/off switches, press store and you’re done. This pedal is a must for me, because I can’t tap-dance and play my parts at the same time. IT switched completely without popping or clicking. I isn’t perfect though. It sucks a bit of tone because it isn’t true bypass (unlike it’s younger brother the Octa-switch). This also results in it being allergic to high impedance pedals such as my MXR Phase 90. Another “downside” is that the channel engages on release of the switch instead of on the push of the switch. It takes some getting used to. I’m considering exchanging it for an Octa-switch, because that has a build in buffer and is true bypass. I have heard it does pop when switching to of from a high gain setting… If anybody had any experience with this, please let me know.

Here are the pedals that are linked to my Combinator:

Pedal Line Friday - 6/10 - John RusschenDOD Tube FX53
This is an old pedal that I bought to make my Valvestate sound a bit more like a tube amp when I was 16 years old. I hadn’t used it for over 10 years and stumbled upon it a while back. I decided to put it in front of my Blackstar HT-Drive and see what it did. It was AWESOME!
My tone got a more saturated and more complex in a smooth way. I have the drive all the way down and put the tone completely open. I also have the TS9, but that thing cuts off my sustain and the DOD just sounds so much better for this purpose. I have this ON in all my high gain settings.

Ibanez TS9 Tubescreamer Reissue
This pedal needs no introduction, I believe. I use it to boost and shape my sound during solos. It’s in between my DOD and my Blackstar. The DOD feeds it some extra frequencies and the TS9 kicks the Blackstar in the butt.
The Gain is on 50% the Tone is on 90% and the Level on 100%. It makes my solos slice right through the mix.

BOSS NS-2 Noise Suppressor
The NS-2 is not the best noise gate. The ISP probably is (in an affordable price range). The ISP is just hard to get in the Netherlands. The NS-2 kills the extreme hiss and hum being caused by the DOD and TS9 and believe me when I say you don’t want to amplify that with the Blackstar.

Blackstar HT-Drive
To me this is the ultimate overdrive pedal. It has a warm full tube overdrive and goes from a slight crunchy crisp sound to soaring high gain thrash metal lead, depending how you use the three controls. I put all controls on 50% to start searching for my sound, to find out that that is exactly the sound I love. This pedal is almost completely quiet when you’re not playing. So I keep the NS-2 before it in the pedal line to prevent losing any of the class A tone. If you don’t know it, try it and love it!!

BOSS CE-5 Chorus Ensemble
For my clean parts I love to have a bit of Chorus, just to make my tone a bit glassy and give it a bit of shimmer and sparkle. I used to have the Voodoo Lab Analog Chorus (the 1976 CE-1 replica). It was great to fool around with at home, but it was too lush and “phaser-like” to use it for the parts that I had in mind.
I’ve been in touch with Zakk Wylde several times (thanks to twitter) and he advised me to try out the CE-5 (this was before he had his own model at MXR, which is more or less a modded version of the CE-5). This pedal has great versatility and allows me to have just a subtle shimmer or a “no more tears” abyss of choral fun.

MXR Carbon Copy Delay
I actually wasn’t a big fan of delays, but I did want one for some clean parts. I’ve tried a few and thought my initial feelings concerning delays were justified, until I tried the Carbon Copy. The warm saturated echo, just adds so much more to your tone it’s freaking great. I recently discovered I’m using it more than I initially intended.

We are now leaving my Combinator

DOD Stereo Turbo Chorus FX67
This is an over the top Chorus. I sometimes use it during solo’s when I’m in the right redneck mood, which usually means I’ve had a bit too many beers…

MXR Phase 90 (Block)
Last but not least is the Phase 90. I use this in the most unsubtle way possible. It’s at the end of the line and it is the in your face block letter version. During short parts that I really want to emphasize I tap this thing and make the whole venue ask themselves if someone put something in their drink.

End of the line folks…

I run this all through a Carlsbro TOP 50, which is very comparable with an original Marshall Plexi. The Carlsbro is a vintage hand wired English amp with mostly Marshall and Hiwatt components. The serial number dates all the way back to 1974, so that’s a keeper!
The amp does not have an effects loop, but that doesn’t really matter, because all my gain based effects are on my pedal board.

I hope to see some of you at a gig some day. I love to meet fellow gear heads, so feel free to buy me a beer and have a semi-intellectual conversation on pedal order and the ultimate guitar tone.

Explosion in the Sky’s Munaf Rayani Pedalboard

In my earlier Russian Circles post I mentioned some of the instrumental bands I like. Pretty high up on the list is Explosions in the Sky. Talk about a fantastic atmospheric band. They set great ambiance, and can reach explosive sonics at any moment. Love these guys while driving.

Here is a break down of guitarist Munaf Rayani’s pedalboard. Photo is by losanjealous, and was shot at the Hollywood Palladium on June 27,2009.

Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo Pedalboard

One of my favorite guitarists out there is Lee Ranaldo from Sonic Youth. I had an opportunity to meet him backstage a few years ago to check out his gear and talk shop.. and it was great experience. It was before this blog, I wish I go back in time and take some quality photos and ask some great questions instead of “You remember that time.. when you were in Sonic Youth? That was awesome…”

Anyway, I don’t have a time machine, but I do have the power of the interweb and the ability to query, so I bring you Lee Ranaldo’s latest set up. A ton of info is available on Sonic Youth’s website, they describe equipment in great detail and is an incredible resource.

This is his set up as of 2009. Haven’t found much info on 2010, but I’m guess it’ll still be close.

He has two pedalboards with one single effect on a mic stand.

Additionally he uses a custom delay box called the Antenna box that is mounted to the mic stand. The Antenna Box was custom built by Matt Zivich

Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo Pedalboard - Antenna BoxThis is mainly used for the song Antenna, but might be used for other infinite repeat delay sounds. It looks like he can route his signal from the ring modulation side into the delay and control repeat, time and volume, and then punch it out of his line with the custom selector.

For those of you that aren’t familiar with Antenna, check out this video where you can see the Antenna box in action. Video was submitted by ZeRapaz:
