I’ve been a fan of Nels from a distance for years, but never really got to learn about his gear until this blog. Coincidentally, I did a pedal board breakdown of his board a while back (you can read it here – Nels Cline – Wilco – Pedal Board), but this video is fantastic. Nels really goes into detail about his guitars, amp and his effects. I really like it when artists go into ‘why’ they like a particular pedal. That kind of insight is very useful when looking at new pedals to purchase or understanding issues you might be having with your current pedals.

Love your site and would love to be featured on Pedal Line Friday!

Here are the pedal boards we use in the band Mod Gun. We are from the Boston area and gig regularly. Our music is available for free download at modgun.bandcamp.com. Please take it!

The first board is home made from ply wood and carpet. The red boss master switch toggles all of the modulations and time based effects on the second row on and off. I run into a dynacomp before my gain stages on the first row, and there is a second dynacomp outside of the switch’s loop at the end of my signal chain. I run my board through a 77 bassman 100 head with a 2×12 avatar cab loaded with eminence swamp thangs. For guitars I use a Gibson Les Paul 40th Anniversary model and a De Armond Starfire.

This poll is for the best wah on the market today. The wah pedal is a very personal tool, and people are very particular of the wah sounds they’re going for. Some like the funk snap, others like a very dark sweep, while others like a very bright wah sweep. Going beyond the tone, everyone has a preference of how it feels below them. What the sweep range is, how to activate the effect and how the foot feels on the pedal itself. Lots of factors.. and lots of wahs out there. So let’s start the poll. If you know of a wah that is available today, but is not on the list, please contact me or comment below. Also, love to hear your own personal feelings about the wah you chose below in the comments as well.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Over on Premier Guitars Facebook page, they posted some fresh shots of Nels Cline’s pedalboard while on tour with Wilco. It’s nice to see a recent photo of his pedals. There were two unidentified pedals there.. so if you can help ID them, please comment below (Pedals have been identified!).

Nels mentioned he feels awkward talking about his pedals on his website. Here is the relevant snippet:

OK, people. You all seem fixated, I dare say HYPNOTIZED, by all my damn effects boxes. So here you go: all about my NEW PEDAL BOARD, being used with Wilco and anything else I can find to drag all 75 pounds of it (including swanky road case) to! I confess that it is a bit irritating to me that people seem so fixated on HOW MANY pedals I have. This is because there seems to be something double-edged about it: a kind of fascination mixed with feelings of skepticism and/or disgust, as though it’s somehow amazing that I can keep track of it all and at the same time I must be some kind of charlatan to NEED so many pedals! Well, what can I say?

Nels has two boards. The first is his primary guitar pedal board and the second is his ‘ambient/noise’ board.

Yesterday started off as somewhat of a shitty day. Not bad in the sense of anything major. Just one of those days that every task was complicated and difficult. Definitely things weren’t going my way easily. I hate these types of days.

In the afternoon, I noticed a post on Facebook from a local bar/club here in Missoula mentioning that The Appleseed Cast were playing tonight and they included a YouTube clip. I see these, literally, every day, but I usually don’t watch the videos. I either know the band… or frankly, don’t care. But for some reason, I wanted to check this out. I’ve never heard The Appleseed Cast before so I watched the video and was blown away with what I saw. Here is the video:

I’m really into bands that can capture emotion with their build up and release. To tell a story without spoon feeding me lyrics and going into detail as to what it’s about – “this next song is about my cat that ran away”… yadda yadda. Who gives a crap. But let me develop my own story. My own emotion. A band that invites you to go on a ride with them in a sense. I really liked what I saw and heard on the video, so now I started to research this band… I wanted more. I checked out their web site, bounced around on a few forums, and was super excited to see them brave the icy roads of Montana to play a show here on a Tuesday night.

Normally, a Tuesday night show has a pretty low turn out. I mean, come on, it’s Tuesday night. We all have something to do Wednesday right? Me being lazy (and tired) as I am, I almost talked myself out of going multiple times. It was cold outside, and I was quite comfortable hanging with the wife watching bad TV, but I stuck to the plan and rallied to see the show.

There were four bands in total. Two local (missed the first one), and I was really impressed with the second. The third was a two piece, which included members of the Appleseed Cast called the Hospital Ships. Finally, after a couple of tallboy PBRs, the Appleseed Cast took the stage, and literally blew my mind.

The sonic aspect of the band was extremely strong, but the guitar inner-play between Taylor Holenbeck (also in Hospital Ships) and Chris Crisci was the good stuff for sure. Perfect blend of melody and power but also could guide you softly to the next transition. Nate Whitman on bass plays the bass I so enjoy. Steady and driving. Locking in with the drums (John Momberg) perfectly. Jordan Geiger on keys (also a member of Hospital Ships) laid down the under/over tones, completing the sound scape. Minimal vocals. Maximum feelings and vibe.

I went home with a smile and excitement about a new band. Check out their tour, and if you have a chance to see them live (tour information), you have to do it. For those of you that know them already, you know where I’m coming from.

So I was able to talk with a few of the members briefly and I wanted to post their boards for the fans of The Appleseed Cast!

Thanks all!

BIO/ROUTING:
I have being playing since the 90s in South America, I founded Gaia (Paraguay-alternative rock) with a few friends, which is now one of the most important bands down there in the Paraguayan rock scene. I was on hold for a while and 3 years ago I started a new project with my 2 brothers, and 2 friends, “La Porca”, in Lima-Peru.

PEDALS:
Roland EV-1 (missing in the picture)
Line 6 Expression Pedal
Mesa Boogie Electra Dyne AMP footswitch (missing on the picture)

My chain starts simple, but gets a little more fun while getting into the Line 6 M13, and using the first 2 FX slots for PRE and the last 2 for POST with the FX loop setup in 4 cable method (4CM) for getting benefit of the sound on my Mesa Electra Dyne:
Guitar > WAH > Philosopher King > EHXPOG2 > Fulltone GT-500 > LINE6M13 (FX 1&2 on PRE for filters use) > AMP INPUT > Line6 M13 FX Return (FX 3&4 on POST for Mods and Delays use) > EHX Memory Man > AMP RETURN > AUDITORY SYSTEMS

Great interaction between the POG2/PHILOSOPHER KING (Which I think enhance the tone, everything sound better with it) and the DMM. The Philosopher and the DMM, gave a HIGH QUALITY sounding signal, very clean, warm and organic, while the POG2 adds nice ambient texture. I love passing the signal through the line 6 M13 Octoverb and particleverb, which I love (you can mimic violins and ambient sounds like the sounding of “Other Lives” in “For 12″ song).

GT-500 is a great all drive in one BOX, Great OD, KIller Distortion and also I can boost, aside from the amp tone and 3 channels Clean, Crunch and high gain setups.

M13 combined with the other analogue pedals rocks, synth strings, with delays and Pitch Gliding expressions with an octave up, can get Depeche Mode sounding . I can also combine this with POG2 and Philosopher one shot function creating more synth possibilities.

I also use the FADE on the Philosopher King with an expression pedal, it gives you a nice foot controlled tremolo.
Also you can mix the Swell with the POG Attack to create weird swells.

As you can see, all of these pedals are big boxes, but there is a lot of possibilities with them, it is very cool to have just one pedal for Drive/ Distortion and boost, other for compressor-sustaine-tremolo- filter synth, and other for octave-organ synth ( also you use less cables, less hum!). The M13 gives me whatever else is missing!

It’s a heavy pedalboard.
I am thinking on getting a tunner pedal as the M13 tunner is just OK.
Any recommendation on how to improve my board or any extra pedal that can help or setup, would be appreciated!

Thanks again for this pedal line friday idea!
Cheers

Hi, this is my pedalboard in hopes of making it into Pedal Line Friday. I play solo and with an 8-person band, This Is Your Captain Speaking- indie rock, alternative, ambient stuff is where we shine. For my solo work I play music that’s perfect for a rainy day (it’s kind of the only music there is if you live in Seattle!) Apparently both myself and my band sounds like indie rock groups such as Death Cab for Cutie, Broken Social Scene, and Arcade Fire…

Now time for the real stars of the show…I start out with a Fender Telecaster, then, using a Mogami cable, I run into my Boss TU-2 Tuner. Going down the line I hit the good ole’ Zvex Vexter Series Box of Rock, perfect for those Marshally sounds at a lower volume. Then I go into the Fulltone GT-500 for it’s tweakable boost/overdrive and, if I really want things to get dirty, I’ll turn on the distortion side to blow up my house. I then go to my MXR Carbon Copy Analog Delay which I use for light delay/slapback for solos; next is the Boss DD-5 Digital Delay for reverse/dotted delay times. Then I’ll put my signal through the Boss RV-5 Digital Reverb to make my sound fuller using the room or hall reverb settings, or I’ll use the modulation setting to play ambient progressions/lead lines. After all is said and done I go into the Line 6 DL4 Delay Modular which I mainly use as a looper for soundscape/ambient stuff.

I connect all my pedals (with the exception of a cheap-o cable from Tuner to BOR, and a Planet Waves cable from RV-5 to DL4) using Hosa Pancake Cables, which have a bad reputation, but to me they’re brilliant and perfect if you want to have more space!

To power it all I use a Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2+, allowing me to power the MXR Carbon Copy with 12v and my GT-55 using 18v.

I am using a homemade pedalboard and Velcro strips to put it all together; I also use electric tape to make sure my settings stay in the right place.

I am playing all this through a Marshall Class 5 amplifier.

I have been working on this signal chain for a few years. Like many others pedal chains, this one is constantly evolving. I have been playing in bands in the Little Rock AR area for a couple years. My current signal path is running one of three guitars, an Aria Pro II, Carvin single cut, Fender Jaguar HH and and older Carvin DC127 Koa, into a series of pedals and then into a Bogner Ecstasy 101b. My pedal path is as follows:

Great sounding octave fuzz for some classic ‘Jimi’ tone.

Here is the official description of hte Fulltone OCtaFuzz OF-2:

The Fulltone OF-2 Octafuzz guitar effects pedal is the only exact circuit copy of the legendary Tycobrahe Octavia on the market. With this killer fuzz pedal you can achieve cool octave-up sounds ala Hendrix’s “Band of Gypsies” and SRV’s many live shows, while the fuzz delivers just what it says: classic fuzz tone.

Housed in a 14-gauge steel enclosure with a beautiful Ranar-blue gloss powdercoat finish and Antique-white logo, this Fulltone Octafuzz pedal is the reincarnation of the Tycobrahe. Its synth-like ring-modulation and “steel-drum” vibe will turn heads.

Features

* Octa/Fuzz toggle
* Volume control
* Boost control
* Footswitch
* LED light
* 14-gauge steel enclosure
* Ranar-blue gloss powdercoat finish
* Antique-white logo
