The everyman Psychedelic Board

Excellent site for us guitar geeks out there and the world of effects is a vast one! I thought id submit my board as it could be one for people who havent got the money for the lovely boutique effects we all want, but i get some great results with them.

I recently did a gig in a Theatre that is up on my website to listen to using this board throughout. Its the everymans Psychedelic Pedal Board!

Guitarman Tuner:
Tuning although imperative, is something I’ve never understood why people spend £200 on a pedal for. Its not going to sort your terribly set up guitar to stay in tune! This is noise free, extremely cheap, accurate, with a bypass for not annoying the crowd. Job done!

Boss SD1 Super Overdrive:
We all know what this does! Its the old faithful. I bought this in 1995 and have used it ever since. Its a great pedal for various musical genres and emulates that driven amp sound very well. A stage one overdrive for the start of the chain.

Artec Classic Fuzztone:
This thing is strange! Its a germanium pedal that is a real animal to control. It has some quite nasty top end that needs to be tamed but if you know what your doing with it you can get some really weird fuzz sounds like the ones they used for soloing in the 60′s Psychedelia. Not for the lazy guitarist it completely kills the guitars tone and transforms it into something quite strange, but if you like that, then Fuzz it up! Your mind will be expanded!

Digitech Clapton Crossroads:
This pedal is my main distortion. It had some jib from the press saying the acoustic tone, setting wasn’t good enough, don’t use it then! The Distortion and overdrive settings really are authentic and if your careful of the natural “suck” of the distortion, for a guitar tone that emulates a valve amp at the top of its headroom you wont look back. This is one underrated pedal. Its all over my live record (www.andrewfostermusic.co.uk)

Danelectro Cool cat Tremolo:
This little cheap pedal has some gorgeous vintage tremolo tones in it and works great for old skool rock & roll right up to Johnny Marr nuttiness when used in conjunction with an overdrive. Again I’ve had this for years.

Ibanez DE7 Delay:
This is my favourite pedal I’ve ever bought and i swear by it. The range of use is exceptional with all delay tones that you could think of. I prefer and use the vintage echo setting the most as it suits my style of music, but you can get your Edge and Greenwood delays if you wish. Slap back, long Gilmore solos, long repeats its all there with a complimentary feel that doesn’t kill the guitars tone.

Storm Octave….?????
Now this is something i was hoping Effects Bay could shed some light on! Its the strangest Octave I’ve ever heard with a habit of doing what it wants, but what a sound! Apparently its late seventies, but i cant find any info on it. With one a 9v battery and no power socket i haven’t adapted it yet to the board for live use, but if i did everything would sound like Jack White so maybe i wont!

My amps are Vox AC30 vr, Vox AC4 through a 70s Marshall Cab, and a Session Rockette 50.

Today I was super stoked to see a new Rig Rundown featuring Nels Cline of Wilco on PremiereGuitar. I’ve been a fan of Nels from a distance for years, but never really got to learn about his gear until this blog. Coincidentally, I did a pedal board breakdown of his board a while back (you can read it here – Nels Cline – Wilco – Pedal Board), but this video is fantastic. Nels really goes into detail about his guitars, amp and his effects. I really like it when artists go into ‘why’ they like a particular pedal. That kind of insight is very useful when looking at new pedals to purchase or understanding issues you might be having with your current pedals.

I’m a double bassist and lead the VOC Silent Film Harmonic, an ensemble that accompanies silent films with improvised soundtracks; I also just make noise for my own enjoyment. Penny the dog provides inspiration.

The pedals on the floor are powered by a Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2 Plus and,in signal order:

Digitech Digidelay – left on the short loop setting. I’ll run it, turn the other effects on/off while having the DL4 on. When the DL4 is full, then I’ll cycle through the DL4′s half-speed/double-speed/reverse settings to provide extra ambiance.

Electro-Harmonix Big Bass Muff – nothing like it to add some fur; can get wooly when I’m really leaning on my bow.

Boss OC-3 Super Octave – in the poly setting, and especially with the Muff, can make a nice wide sound bass of doom.

Marshall VT-1 Vibratrem – left on trem setting with the depth control maxed and the speed about halfway. With the Muff and Super Octave, gives a great pulse. A trick is to loop it with the speed & depth on one setting, then change those settings to get some arrhythmic pulses

DOD FX90 Delay – all controls dimed. Can’t leave it on for too long otherwise it overloads but a nice atmospheric swell as it ramps up.

TC Electronics Nova Reverb – set on plate for a big sound. Gives a great effect when I hit my bass. Might be replaced as I’m having my Alesis Nanoverb rehoused in a floor pedal.

Line 6 DL4 – left on loop setting.

The effects on the table, handy for live knob-twiddling and powered by a Godlyke Power-All are, in signal order:

DOD DFX9 Delay – commonly used in the short loop setting and then subsequent pedals turned on/off, much like the Digitech on the floor.

Red Panda Labs bitcrusher – a wonderful bit of freaky goodness dropped in a Line 6 Tonecore pedal. Many, many sweet spots on this pedal.

DAED-modded Boss SD-1 & DAED-modded DS-1: no modding to original circuits. Modding by the freaks at Disagreeable Audio Experience Designs introduces mega-heavy fuzz, mini-theremin, high-pass filter, etc.through the swithces. The SD-1 has a power-choke for extra square-wave/bit-starved wonder.

WMD Geiger Counter Civilian Issue – love scrolling through the effects (in low-fi mode, of course) while the DFX-9 loops.

Boss PS-2 Digital Delay/Pitch-Shifter – glitchy goodness when running through the mode knob. Using the octave down, when it’s already getting a low signal, makes it glitch nicely.

Subdecay Noisebox – should’ve have been called Rice Krispy as it adds lovely snaps, crackles, and pops!

Alesis Ineko – a very handy and tweakable multi-fx unit.

Line 6 DL4 – as the floor unit, left on looping mode.

Each effect chain runs through a volume pedal, to take the whole chain up and down, and then through a Wounded Paw Ultra Blender switcher.

Over on Premier Guitars Facebook page, they posted some fresh shots of Nels Cline’s pedalboard while on tour with Wilco. It’s nice to see a recent photo of his pedals. There were two unidentified pedals there.. so if you can help ID them, please comment below (Pedals have been identified!).

Nels mentioned he feels awkward talking about his pedals on his website. Here is the relevant snippet:

OK, people. You all seem fixated, I dare say HYPNOTIZED, by all my damn effects boxes. So here you go: all about my NEW PEDAL BOARD, being used with Wilco and anything else I can find to drag all 75 pounds of it (including swanky road case) to! I confess that it is a bit irritating to me that people seem so fixated on HOW MANY pedals I have. My name is Matt Streit, I am 29 years old, graphic designer/musician/effects pedal builder-designer-enthusiast.  I sing and play bass in a sludge metal band called Burrows www.facebook.com/burrowsct http://burrowsmusic.bandcamp.com/ and I have an acoustic/solo project called the Forest Room www.youtube.com/theforestroom.

I built this pedalboard myself, along with a few of the pedals on it.

In Order:

Boss TU-2 tuner – I use a daisy chain from this to power the other pedals, except for the Jamman and the DD-7.

Dunlop Crybaby Bass wah wah pedal (heavily modded gcb95 – “Bass Wah of Doom”) – a co-worker gave me this bass wah after cleaning his studio, must’ve been sitting for years, it was dirty, had spider nests in it, probably didnt’ work, so I cleaned it up, re-painted it, and did a bunch of mods to it.  I did this Foot-on-Switch/true bypass mod to it that I found on instructables.com, a pretty useful switching option I must say; there’s normal crybaby switching and then with a flip of a switch I can have the effect in use only when my foot is on that little red momentary switch on the foot pedal.  I also did a Q control mod, bass switch mod, and volume swell mod to it from Griffin Effects.  I don’t use wah with the music I play really, but the volume swell is something I use and the wah does go well with creating weird and varying soundscapes combined with my other effects pedals.  This sat for a year after I painted it and before assembling it and for some reason the paint didn’t take too well so it’s got some chipping now, I might touch it up or I might keep it.  The “beat up” look doesn’t look bad.

GGG Dan Armstrong Orange Squeezer Compressor/”Happy Happy Joy Joy Squeezer” – This was from a kit from General Guitar Gadgets.  One of my early pedal builds.  I designed the artwork, painted it, applied the artwork, and assembled it.  It’s a nice simple pedal and does what I want it for.  I really only use it for a more consistent volume/tone when doing two-hand tapping stuff.

EHX Bass Big Muff - Excellent distortion pedal for bass and I’ve tried a good handful before settling on this.  I usually use the “dry mode” and because of that, I am able to mix it well live when with other distortion pedals I’ve used in the past have either been too much or not enough.

EHX Octave Multiplexer – Excellent Octave pedal.  Great Tracking.  Get some great synthesizer-type sounds combined with my distortion.

BYOC Reverb/”Deep Sea Verb” – I’ve tried several reverb pedals, kind of a long story how/why I got to this one, but I did a freelance paint/design/graphic application/re-housing to a pedal for a guy in Maryland who had seen my builds on some of the gear messageboards I check out and post on.  He bought me the kit in exchange for my services and I must say I’m very happy with this reverb pedal.  I did a couple mods to the circuitboard that I found on the BYOC messageboard and through contacting them about it, basically put two trimpots in spots so I could mix the wet and dry to perfection.  My favorite pedal art on my board.  I did a mixed paint job, green base, with some blue misted over it.  I’m really into the Planet Earth BBC documentaries and I took a screen shot from the Caverns episode that I liked and added a diver to it and used a blue led light to make it look like the diver’s flashlight.  I think it’s pretty cool when the led light is a part of the artwork.  Looks and sounds awesome.

Boss PS-3 Pitch Shifter/Delay – This pedal is kind of a secret weapon haha.  I get some very unique sounds from it.  I use two different settings in a couple subtle small parts, but you can play with this thing for days and get all sorts of weird stuff.

Boss DD-7 Digital Delay w/ tap tempo – Excellent and functional delay pedal.  I usually just keep it in the analog setting.  I first got into looping parts with this pedal cuz it has the loop function which is awesome and easy to use.  I built the tap tempo pedal that’s with it which is very useful to have.  The tap tempo made a popping noise when I used the daisy chain to power this, so I got a separate adapter for it which solved the problem.

Digitech Jamman Looper/Sampler w/ footswitch – I wanted to be able to add more and do more with live looping that the DD-7 can’t do, so I bought this from a guy on craigslist and got a great deal.  I use live looping more with the Forest Room project I do, but this is also a very useful tool for writing.  I also sometimes load drum beats and/or synthesizer parts that I create in Reason to this pedal.  I haven’t used it much with my current band, but i’m sure it’ll get more use in the future.  For a trio situation, it is nice to be able to layer parts and sounds to fill up space if needed.  I do a lot of multi-tasking haha.  I built the footswitch that goes with it which allows me to go up and down the sound banks of the pedal as well as switching between the auto record function.

Everything is pretty tight in my pedalboard, but I love it and I don’t really have any need for any more pedals any time soon.

I primarily play two Ibanez SR1205 five string neck-thru basses (my main bass is natural color with an aguilar obp-3 onboard preamp and my back-up is the same bass stock electronics and is transparent black).  My amp is a Gallien-Krueger 1001RB head with an Ampeg 6×10 cabinet that I put a steel grill over the mesh cover and I put black speaker carpet on the entire cab for better protection.  For the Forest Room, I play a 1985 limited edition Ovation Celebrity acoustic guitar and an Ibanez AEB30 acoustic bass guitar that I converted to fretless, coated the neck, and put flatwounds on, and plug that into a small 1×10 peavey bass combo amp.

I play with this pedal setup in my band Roadside Manor.  I use a Vox AC30 an my main guitar is a Mexican made Fender Stratocaster with Lace Sensor Gold Pickups (easy adjustment to make a MIM Strat sound amazing).

This is my pedal line from the instrument-amplifier:

* Dunlop Crybaby Wah *: A true classic…

* Boss PH-3 Phase Shifter *: This is a pretty sweet phaser many different modes and sounds in such a small pedal (I have a Boss FS-5L attached to it as the expression pedal to change the rate)

* Digitech Whammy *: This is one of my newest pedals.  You can get all kinds of sweet harmonizing sounds with this pedal and it’s really a blast to play with

* Keeley Katana Clean Boost *: This pedal is a great boost pedal.  The volume knob pulls out to convert into an overdrive pedal as well.  I use this when I need a nice, crisp solo sound

* Ibanez TS9DX Turbo Tube Screamer *: This pedal is much like the TS9 made by Ibanez, but it has different modes you can set it to.  This one works well for getting a real dirty, crunchy solo tone

* Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer *: Another classic, works great for a real crunchy tone

* Boomerang III Phrase Sampler *: A sweet loop pedal that can loop up to 17 minutes of recorded audio.  It has many different functions, including a reverse function which will play back what you are playing in reverse (it records 8 second chunks and plays that 8 seconds while you continue playing and it is recording another 8 seconds and so on, I haven’t mastered it just yet but it seems like it could be interesting to use)

* Boss TU-3 Chromatic Tuner *: A nice, simple tuner pedal

While my server was shitting the bed this morning I was drinking my coffee and listening to some Radiohead. Normally, that would take me to insta-bad-mood, but oddly, I was fine with it this morning. I ended up watching Radiohead performances and what not and stumbled across a cool VideoSong by JRENG! I’ve seen this before, but thought it would be cool to show it this morning. JRENG! is performing Radiohead’s Paranoid Android.

Now for you that aren’t familiar with VideoSongs – VideoSongs are songs captured with a video camera where everything you hear is shot with the camera. So what you hear.. you see at some point (no hidden overdubs, etc). There are some amazing artists that are involved with VideoSongs, and JRENG! is one of the best. I love how he broke down the drum parts for the complicated sections. Very cool. For a non-drummer like myself, I can relate with this technique.

Getting my daily GuitarSquid on, I came across a video (2 parts) of Mike Einziger (of Incubus) talking about his gear (guitar, pedals and amps). It was an interesting setup with a custom pedal board/configuration.  Mike is a guy that definitely knows how to control and manipulate is guitar sound, so I wanted to re-post with a break down of pedals currently on his board for this tour. There were a couple of pedals I wasn’t 100% sure on. If you have more information, please contact me or comment the below. The pedals in question were the DOD FX25B and the Wah. The wah definitely looks like a Dunlop ‘style’ enclosure, but I cannot tell if that’s stock white grip from another builder, or tape applied to a standard GCB-95.

Last week I got an email from Ryan Rukavina of Rukavina Guitars letting me know about a cool video by tcelectronic. This video features Eric Baech, guitar tech of Troy Van Leeuwen (Queens of the Stone Age), and he goes over Troy’s set up. This includes his main pedal board, rack/amps and guitars.

I broke down, into detail, what was seen (since Eric doesn’t go into detail of each pedal). I have everything worked out pretty well except for two unknown pedals. They’re listed below, so if you can help shed some light, please comment below and I’ll get the  list updated.
