Best Delay / Echo Pedals Under $200

Best Delay / Echo Pedals Under $200A while back, I posted the Top 5 Delay Pedals on the Market. I mentioned that this was tough because defining “best” is difficult. Is the most expensive mean best? Is the most popular best? So today I thought I would add a community poll. I’ve eliminated the price to define best by making the options within the under $200 mark. This will cover a lot of the widely used delay/echos out there. So with this group of delays, what do you feel is best. Please vote below and if you have a comment or opinion, or if you know of a delay not in the list, please comment below.

When determining what pedals fall in this category, I opted to not go with MSRP (list price) but the commonly available prices of these pedals.

Black Friday Deal on the TC Electronic ND-1 Nova Delay!

Black Friday Deal on the TC Electronic ND-1 Nova DelayOkay.. this is a really good one. A few days back I did a top 5 delay list, and someone mentioned the TC Electronic Nova Delay, and I have to say, that is a pretty tasty delay for sure. This delay definitely has option, and it seems very easy to program, which I like. I thought the audio ‘tap’ is pretty cool too.

So, what’s the deal? The TC Electronic ND-1 Nova Delay pedal lists for $345.00, and is usually available for $260.00, but is currently on sale for only $200.95. So $60 off regular price! That’s a good deal. This pedal also ships with FREE super saver shipping.

Here is the official description of the TC Electronic ND-1 Nova Delay:

The ND-1 Nova Delay raises the bar for guitar effect pedals and redefines what it means to be “state-of-the-art.” It’s built upon the legacy and knowledge of TC’s world-renowned TC 2290 Dynamic Digital Delay.

With 6 different stereo delay types and the option to store up to 9 presets customizable by an array of style parameters ranging from vintage tape to digital delay. This effect pedal easily serves all delay requirements of modern guitar players who seek unique sounds.

Each of these types can be modified with a delay style — a unique feature of ND-1 Nova Delay that allows you to mix and match your delay type and style infinitely.

With the ND-1 Nova Delay, both single delay and dual delay lines can be applied to any type and style using the tap tempo switch or delay time knob to determine the delay time that ranges from 1 to 2290 ms.

Three different types of modulation (light, medium and heavy) can be applied to any of the delay types — a feature originating from the TC 2290 Dynamic Digital Delay processor.

The all-new Audio Tapping™ technology enables you to set the tempo of the delay by playing a rhythm into the pedal while holding down the tap tempo switch. You can now set the tempo of the delay using your most important asset: Your playing.

Other great ND-1 Nova Delay features include the pedal’s ability to choose between ms (milliseconds) and bpm (beats per minute) readout, decide if you want spillover on individual settings and turn global tempo — where tap tempo determines delay time on user presets — on and off.

Here is the official video by tcelectronic:

Again, the TC Electronic ND-1 Nova Delay is on sale for only $200.95 at Amazon.com.

Nice deal on the MXR Carbon Copy delay at Amazon

Nice deal on the MXR Carbon Copy delay at AmazonOk, so this price may finally push me over the edge to pick up the MXR Carbon Copy (I mentioned I still don’t own one here). Not sure yet. I think I need to look at the GuitarSquid “should I buy gear” flow chart. Either way, it’s a good deal for someone. Right now at Amazon, the MXR Carbon Copy delay is on sale for $121.36 and ships with FREE super saver shipping. Normally, this pedal is available in the $150 range, so it’s a nice pick up for sure.

Here is the official description of the MXR Carbon Copy Delay:

The MXR Carbon Copy Analog Delay Pedal features a completely analog audio path for the ultimate in rich, warm delay-made possible only by old-school bucket brigade technology. This design boasts an amazing 600ms of delay time with optional modulation via a top-mounted switch and a simple, three-knob layout that controls Delay time, Mix (dry/wet blend), and Regen (delay repeats)-all in a pedal no bigger than a Phase 90. In addition, the M169 pedal has two internal trim pots that offer user-adjustable width and rate control of the modulation for even more tonal options. The Carbon Copy effect pedal will take you from crisp “bathroom” slap echoes to epic, Gilmour-esque delays with a twist of a knob. True hard-wire bypass, single 9-volt operation, and stage-ready blue LEDs round out the package.

Top 5 Delay Pedals on the Market

Top 5 Delay Pedals on the MarketOriginally, when I was going to write this post, I was going to do it a little differently. I was going to pull some various resources to figure out the top 5 delay pedals on the market today. The problem is.. this is quite subjective. Top 5 could mean the best, but best is often not realistic (Does expensive mean best? Is exclusivity best? Is workhorse best? Is popularity best?). I wanted to compile maybe the most ‘popular’ or possibly the best bang for the buck set of delays.

So, I thought I would do something different and post my opinion, but ask for you to supply your own opinion of your top 5 delays below in the comments. Please add some explanations of your choices to help others.

For this, I compiled this short list of common delays available today. I know there are delays missing, but wanted to include delays that I often see on Pedal Line Fridays, and see in recurring discussions on forums, etc. If you feel one is not in here… and should be included, comment or contact me, and I’ll update this post. This list is in no particular order.

Empress SuperDelay
Diamond Memory Lane 2
Pigtronix PHI Echolution
T-Rex Replica Delay
Eventide Timefactor
Strymon El Capistan Tape Echo
Strymon TimeLine
Fulltone Tape Echo
Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Memory Boy
Electro-Harmonix Memory Man
Akai Head Rush E2
Boss DD-20 GigaDelay
Boss RE-20 Space Echo
Line 6 DL4 Delay Modeler
MXR Carbon Copy
Way Huge Aqua Puss Analog Delay
Boss DD-7 Delay
Boss DD-3 Delay
Maxon AD999 Delay

Okay, for my opinion of the Top 5 Delay Pedals on the Market.

1. T-Rex Replica Delay
2. Eventide Timefactor
3. Boss DD-7 Delay
4. MXR Carbon Copy
5. Electro-Harmonix Memory Man

T-Rex Replica Delay – I own this personally, and I think this is an awesome delay. Love the tone, love the tap tempo, very warm sounding

Eventide Timefactor – I’ve seen mention of this over and over. It’s on the higher end of the price spectrum, but there is no denying that this is a popular delay. It may be more complicated than what I like, but I would love to take it for a spin.

Boss DD-7 – I’m including this because it’s a work horse. I almost want to include all the DD series pedals. For the price, it’s a great sounding digital delay. I own a Boss DD-3 and it’s great for the rhythmic delay overlay. I always feel like I want to exclude it, but every time I play it, I’m impressed.

MXR Carbon Copy – I still wonder why I don’t own this. I’ve thought about buying it a ton. This is a perfect example of following Pedal Line Fridays. The amount of times I see this pedal on the line is ridiculous. Probably one of the most popular delays featured on Pedal Line Friday submissions.

Electro-Harmonix Memory Man – I would probably slap the Deluxe Memory Boy, Hazarai, etc. EHX makes some amazing gear, and this is a classic delay. Upper Mid-Range in price, but unbelievably solid. Love the tone. Jimmy Rolle (who does the demos) has an older Deluxe Memory Man, and the pedal is bad ass.

I have a feeling I’m going to change my mind in about an hour….

So let’s hear what your Top 5 is… and more importantly why. Remember, we’re not just picking the 5 most expensive pedals. I think showcasing ‘working man’ delays with the high end stuff is a good metric on the popularity and the effectiveness of the particular delays. Getting feedback from you guys is a great way to see what is hot or required for delay guys.

Electro-Harmonix XO Stereo Polychorus

Electro-Harmonix XO Stereo PolychorusToday I wanted to talk about the Electro-Harmonix XO Stereo Polychorus. This is the classic ‘Nirvana’ effect used in “Come as you are”. The polychorus, as the name implies, is not just a chorus effect. It is an analog chorus effect, with flanger and slapback echo functionality and allowing you to combine all for some cool sounds and textures. Electro-Harmonix recently put this in their XO enclosure and changed some of controls. The original had ‘width’ and ‘plate’ and this version now has ‘sweep filter’ and ‘sweep rate’. The other controls are still there – ‘tune/delay’, ‘feedback’ and ‘mode’.

Here is the official description of the Electro-Harmonix XO Stereo Polychorus:

NOW IN THE NEW AND IMPROVED DIE CAST CHASSIS
The final word in analog chorus pedals. The classic that Kurt Cobain and Adrian Belew relied on to create their signature sounds. The Stereo Polychorus provides the lushest stereo chorus, rich chiming flange, and the over-the-edge effects that made this versatile pedal legendary.

I found this great video by EHX demoing some of the tones that you can get with the Stereo Polychorus, including the Nivana-esque tone as well as a very close King Crimson tone. Very cool.

You can pick up the Electro-Harmonix XO Stereo Polychorus for $222.00 at Amazon.com

Strymon TimeLine – Lo-Fi Delay Machine

Strymon TimeLine - Lo-Fi Delay MachineSeriously. Strymon. Seriously. It was a few months ago I was blown away by a BlueSky demo. Seems odd to be blown away by a reverb demo, but it really impressed me. After receiving the BlueSky, I was impressed even further. Strymon is a company doing fantastic things with pedals. For those of you that aren’t familiar with Strymon. Stop now. Click here, then come back. Those of you too lazy to click, I’ll explain more here.

Strymon takes all the good things about digital and analog stompboxes and puts them together. Instead of using a DSP (digital signal processing) chip to do a million tones and effects (ala multi processor unit), Strymon focuses on a specific effect and go into crazy detail. They wrap that up with good footswitches and standard pots to dial things the way you want.

For a while now, I’ve been hearing great things about the BlueSky (first hand knowledge.. this thing is great) and the El Capistan tape echo. But, the other day, I saw this video on the TimeLine, which they’re calling it a ‘Inspriation machine’. And after what I saw, I believe it.

Here is the official description of this pedal:

When we decided to create a studio-class stereo delay effects pedal, we knew we must go well beyond what has been done in the past—in sound quality, sonic flexibility, hardware design, and processing power. We spent months locked up in the Strymon sound design labs with an intense focus on dreaming up the most spacious, lush, creative, and tweakable delay effects ever heard. It was a monumental task—a relentless study of delays and their nuances, and a continuous pursuit of innovative and musically inspirational sounds. Utilizing a ridiculously powerful SHARC DSP, every drop of processing power is harnessed. Each algorithm is so detailed it requires the entire processor.

TimeLine provides you with twelve different delay machines, each with extensive control over sonic character and feel. Tweak to your hearts content and save up to 200 presets of your favorite sounds. Go from crisp and clear, studio-quality digital delays all the way to the saturated and fluctuating sounds of tape delay machines. Get warm and fuzzy analog style repeats all the way to shimmery, sparkling, and crystalline ice delays. Top it all off with full MIDI implementation and a routable, 30-second stereo looper and you’re on your way to delay bliss.

This pedal is only available as Pre-Order, but I’ve been hearing a few people owning it. So I would assume it’s available very soon. The price tag is up there, but for what it does, I think it’s not too bad at $449.00.

Okay.. enough talk, check this video out by strymon:

Let me know what you think by commenting! There are a few more vids out there, but wanted to start with this one first.

Visual Sound – Dual Tap Delay – Coming Soon

Visual Sound - Dual Tap Delay - Coming SoonI’m pretty excited about this pedal. I’ve watched a few videos yesterday on the Visual Sound Dual Tap Delay and I wanted to showcase those for you today. The Visual Sound Dual Tap Delay is basically two delays in a in single box with a single tap tempo switch. There is a channel 1 and channel 2, but channel 2 has a modulation effect on the repeats. Either channel can be used in manual or in tap modes. The ability to have a single tap is you can have a long delay on one channel and dotted delays on the other channel… but it’s all controlled from one tap, so it perfect based off the quarter note tap. Very cool. Channels can be used independently or together. Maximum delay time is one second for each channel.

They’re also talking about the simplicity… and I’m really hearing what they’re saying. The instructions are on one sheet! No book. I want to just tweak and go, I’ve mentioned in the past that I hate it when there is a manual, you end up scratching the surface anyway, so I’m glad they kept things simple with this.

I don’t think they’ve released an official date when this will be available to the masses, apparently soon. Also, not sure about the price. Definitely something to keep an eye out for.

VisualSoundUSA put out 5 videos showing what this pedal can do. I included all 5 so you can see what it’s all about, let me know what you think by commenting below!
