T-Rex Twister 2 Give Away

T-Rex Twister 2 Give Away

CONTEST IS CLOSED

Last week I posted the T-Rex Twister II Chorus/Flanger review. This is a absolutely great sounding pedal made by T-Rex. If you know anything about T-Rex, you know they make fantastic pedals. If you haven’t checked out the review/demo, you can view it here – “Review of the T-Rex Twister II Chorus / Flanger Pedal“.

For the quick run down on the pedal – here is the official pedal description from T-Rex:

Shimmering, rich, vibrant, swirling. There are lots of ways to describe the chorus effect, made famous in the 80s and used today by just about every guitarist on the planet. A chorus brings your sound to life, adding a dynamic vibrancy to the sonic texture of any song you use it on. T-Rex Engineering is proud to introduce the next generation of this legendary effect – Twister II, a chorus and flanger pedal for guitarists who demand nothing less than the best.

So, I was sitting here with this great pedal.. thinking of what to do with it. Why not give it away! Just like usual, this will be super easy to enter.  I’ll run this give away for two weeks (ends 4/29 12PM MST). This is a great give away, the T-Rex Twister 2 chorus / flanger normally lists for $369.00 and is usually available for $279.00. So this is a great opportunity to get a great pedal… for FREE. I would also like to take a moment and thanks the guys at T-Rex for sending the pedal our way and letting us give it away to a lucky EffectsBay.com reader. I’ll email the 3 finalists and the first one out of the three that emails me back will be the winner.You must enter a ‘valid’ email address, bounce back emails will be rejected. One entry per person (seriously people.. one entry per person). After the winner has been notified and all is good (I’ve retrieved mailing address, etc), I’ll send out the pedal. Want to improve your odds? You can by joining the mailing list, you’ll have another chance to win. I’ll be pulling from the email list as well as these form submissions. If you’re already receiving the mailing list, you’re already in for the drawing! This give away is open to everyone.. yes.. international!

Review of the T-Rex Twister II Chorus / Flanger Pedal

Review of the T-Rex Twister II Chorus / Flanger PedalA little while ago T-Rex sent us the new T-Rex Twister II Chorus / Flanger pedal to try out and review on the site. T-Rex makes some great guitar effects, quality and tone are always fantastic. The Twister II is a upgrade from the original T-Rex Twister pedal. They upgraded all software and hardware as well as improved some of the older features. The Twister II was designed to provide vintage sounds as well as modern chorus modulation tones.

Let me break down the controls and features.

First off, the pedal is a stereo pedal and for our demos below we recorded it in stereo. On the side (input side) there is a input level control. This allows you to control the input signal level to the pedal. This is a great way to keep the pedal clean.. or crank it to overdrive the circuit. There is a clip LED next to the pot, so you can easily see if your signal is hot. This knob can be depressed and be out of the way. So if you want… set it and forget it.

Depth. This handles the amount of modulation on the effect. Turn it down for subtle effect, but it up for more.
Rate. This handles the speed of the modulation
Level. Handles the pedal’s output level
Tone. Allows you to shave off high end frequencies
Regen. Regeneration used in flanger mode. This will control the feedback of the flange.
Chorus/Flanger toggle. This is how you switch between the two effects

The pedal is powered via 9v DC power supply. You can power with a 9v battery… but would not recommend it. On the back it states “Battery Power for Emergency Use Only”. We tried this, and it’ll eat the battery very quick (30-60 minutes of use). The draw is 85mA so it needs a good amount of juice.

Here is the official description of this pedal:

Shimmering, rich, vibrant, swirling. There are lots of ways to describe the chorus effect, made famous in the 80s and used today by just about every guitarist on the planet. A chorus brings your sound to life, adding a dynamic vibrancy to the sonic texture of any song you use it on. T-Rex Engineering is proud to introduce the next generation of this legendary effect – Twister II, a chorus and flanger pedal for guitarists who demand nothing less than the best.

My immediate reaction to this pedal.. classic T-Rex. The effect seems to be around your tone.. not your altered tone. I love that I can hear the guitar’s original tone in there. I’ve played a few T-Rex pedals now, and all of them had this behavior. I dig it!

For this review, I again enlisted the help of Jimmy Rolle. He did a couple of demos – a clean version and a distorted version. For this demo, he used his American Fender Stratocaster, played through two amps (Matchless DC-30 and Rivera Knucklehead) in stereo. Both amps were recorded with a Fathead SPII Ribbon and Shure SM57 microphones through a ART Pro MPAII PreAmp into the computer.

This first clip is the clean demo:

You can listen to the high quality MP3 clip via SoundCloud

Next is Jimmy playing the T-Rex Twister II through the gain channels:

You can listen to the high quality MP3 clip via SoundCloud

Overall, this is a great sounding pedal backed by the legendary quality of T-Rex. The T-Rex Twister II is a new product to the United States, and requires special ordering if you purchase from Musician’s Friend (at this time). The T-Rex Twister II Chorus / Flanger is available for $279.00 at Musician’s Friend.

If you’re liking the sound of this pedal, I’ll be giving this guy away very soon. To make sure you’re aware when this give away is happening, please sign up to the EffectsBay.com mailing list!

Guest Pedal Review – Grumpy Toad FX Pork Barrel Chorus

Guest Pedal Review - Grumpy Toad FX Pork Barrel ChorusThe following is a guest post by Kevin Ian Common. If you are interested in guest posting, please contact me!

Hello Kind Readers!

The pedal I am reviewing today is The Pork Barrel Chorus by Grumpy Toad FX in Sacramento. Grumpy Toad is a small pedal company that specializes in built clones of your favorite vintage pedals. Todd –the builder– also slightly modifies pedals according to his customers’ wishes and has a great reputation for producing quality work.

I recently met him and put in an order for a custom boost pedal (which I will review when it arrives), but I had the pleasure of playing through one of his latest builds, a pedal he dubs the “Pork Barrel Chorus.”

The first thing I notice upon playing through it is the tremendous warmth and bass response. This is not your average chorus pedal, which tends to thin out your sound. This packs some serious bottom. I took it for a test run on my Peavey Classic 30, Vox, and my bassist’s GK rig, and the pedal stood up to all three tests.

The range of the rate knob goes from subtle to lush to seasick. I found myself more in favor of the subtle and lush sounds, which have yet to be rivaled by any chorus pedal I’ve played since. The depth can go from almost non-existent to extreme as well, giving you a vast array of tones at your disposal.

Todd also added in some switches to the pedal. The first one is a Depth switch. It changes the range of the Depth knob. The second –and my favorite of the switches– is a Vibrato/Trem switch that takes the dry signal out, leaving you with a vibrating tremolo sound. However, it wouldn’t be wise to call it a vibrato or tremolo because it’s still a chorus effect, so the effected signal is still detuned! This was a really unique addition to the chorus and one that was surprisingly musical and useful.

Grumpy Toad FX can be found here:

Here is a modest video with me going through a bunch of settings on the Pork Barrel Chorus.

Go through what he has done and talk to him about what you are looking for. I found him to be friendly, and helpful!

Dunlop Uni-Vibe

Dunlop Uni-Vibe Effect PedalSo the last few days.. I’ve been sick as a dog with the flu. Can’t think of the last time I threw up.. and it wasn’t alcohol related. Brutal. Anways, I’m feelin’ much better today so back to thinking about pedals. I’m sorta surprised that I didn’t bring this one up before, but here is the Dunlop Uni-Vibe pedal. The classic rotating speaker pedal for that instant vintage sound.

Here is the official description:

The unique, airy rotating speaker sound of the Dunlop Uni-Vibe Effect Pedal incorporates the original circuit design using hand-matched photo resistors. MXR ZW38 Zakk Wylde Black Label Chorus

MXR ZW38 Zakk Wylde Black Label Chorus Guitar Effects PedalNot sure why I’ve been on a chorus kick lately, but I’ve been on it. Today, I saw that @jimdunlopusa just uploaded a new video so I wanted to check it out. It was a video on the MXR ZW38 Zakk Wylde Black Label Chorus pedal. Another nice little chorus pedal using bucket brigade technology for some classic analog chorus effect.

Here is the official description:

The MXR Black Label Chorus is Zakk’s secret weapon to thicken up his wall of distortion and add liquid dimension and texture to clean passages. At the heart of the MXR Black Label Chorus is its bucket brigade circuitry—the only way to get truly rich and warm analog chorusing. The MXR Zakk Wylde Chorus pedal’s vintage style tones are dialed in by High and Low cut filters and Level, Rate, and Depth controls. For the ultimate in spatial chorusing, hook up 2 amps via the 2 outputs for a wide and sweeping stereo spread. Like all MXR pedals, the Black Label Chorus comes in a heavy-duty housing with durable jacks and switches for a lifetime on the road.

The MXR Zakk Wylde Chorus guitar pedal can be powered by one 9V battery (accessed by removing the effect pedal’s bottom plate), a Dunlop DC810DC brick, or MC403 Power system (sold separately).

Here is the video by jimdunlopusa:

Visual Sound Liquid Chorus

Visual Sound V2 Series V2LC Liquid Chorus Guitar Effects PedalI’ve posted a few Visual Sound pedals recently, and they really seem to get some great responses from the public, so I thought I’d post another one. Today, I wanted to talk about the Visual Sound Liquid Chorus pedal. It’s basically the chorus section of the Visual Sound H20 but in a single pedal. It’s a pretty great sounding chorus.

Here is the official description:

The V2 Liquid Chorus incorporates the chorus channel of the V2 H2O in a single pedal, with a Depth knob added to the Speed, Width, and Delay Time controls for everything from subtle to lush to underwater. The Liquid Chorus pedal also has two 1/4″ outputs, normal and inverted, for running in stereo.

Wonderfully voiced for electric, acoustic, or bass guitar, using pure analog circuitry, the Liquid Chorus pedal will make your sound stand out from all the rest. At the heart of the Liquid Chorus circuit are custom-designed Visual Sound bucket brigade chips. Use the Depth knob to set the overall style of Chorus (from light to lush) and the user-friendly knobs to adjust how you want your chorus to sound. Unlike H2O, the second output of Liquid Chorus is a true stereo output for extremely spacious sounds when used with two amps, a PA system, or when recording.

From the V2 Series, the Visual Sound V2LC Liquid Chorus is a guitar effects pedal that features a die-cast aluminum housing, ultra-reliable 10 million cycle switching, easy battery access and circuit protection from AC adapters.

Visual Sound V2 Series V2LC Liquid Chorus Guitar Effects Pedal Features:

* Voiced for electric, acoustic, or bass
* Speed control
* Width control
* Delay time control
* Depth control
* Dual 1/4″ outputs
* Diecast aluminum housing
* 10 million cycle switching
* Easy battery access
* Circuit protection

Here is a video by VisualSoundUSA:
