In my earlier Russian Circles post I mentioned some of the instrumental bands I like. Pretty high up on the list is Explosions in the Sky. Talk about a fantastic atmospheric band. They set great ambiance, and can reach explosive sonics at any moment. Love these guys while driving.
Here is a break down of guitarist Munaf Rayani’s pedalboard. Photo is by losanjealous, and was shot at the Hollywood Palladium on June 27,2009.
In the line of effects, it looks like we have:
Boss TU-2 Chromatic Tuner
Boss RV-3 Reverb
Unknown (He used to play a Russian Big Muff here)
Tech 21 SansAmp GT2
Ibanez Tone-Lok DE7 Delay
Boss RC-20XL Loop Station
For those who don’t know Explosions in the Sky, here is a live video snippet by KamratAnders:

Looks more like the RC-20XL; this might seem pedantic to correct but anyone that’s ever used both knows there’s a world of difference.Reply

For anyone who doesn’t know these guys, they did the theme for the “Friday Night Lights” TV show on NBC and DirecTV. They’re from Austin, Texas (where I spent a delightful decade) and have been on Austin City Limits.Reply

hey, i just saw these guys a few days ago. best concert i’ve ever been to by far. anyway, i went up to the stage at the end of the show to check out everyone’s gear and the unknown pedal above is a frantone brooklyn overdrive. i have a crappy cell phone pic of his line up if you’d like it.Reply

Munaf mentioned in a Guitar World interview that he was using a distortion pedal made by a brooklyn based builder called Frantone.Reply
